BECHDEL TEST: Excellent!

DEGGANS' RULE: Oops!

FEMME PRESENCE: Female presence in the cast was exceptionally strong.

ARTISTIC MERITS: Superb!

WHAT DAVID the BRUCE SAYS: Disney goes from "Wish Upon a Star" to "Be Careful What You Wish For." And the studio returns to the bitter sweet endings of the Brothers Grimm originals. The purpose of fairy tales was to prepare the listener for life-as-it-is. Words cannot describe the beauty and artistry of this magnificent masterpiece of cinematic story telling!

GOOD POINTS: The film is literally heaven on earth.

IMPROVEMENTS: More People of Color. The original Brothers Grimm fairy tales were keyed to the German experience and tradition, therefore "euro-white." The tales have since gone international and are now a multi-cultural shared experience. The casting could have reflected this.

CELEBRATE: Collaborative cinematic artistry at its best!

MIS EN SCENE: means "visual theme" or "telling a story"—both in visually artful ways through storyboarding, cinematography and stage design, and in poetically artful ways through direction. Mise-en-scène has been called film criticism's "grand undefined term".

STUDIO SYNOPSIS: Sarah (Kate Bosworth), Abby (Katie Aselton) and Lou (Lake Bell) – get together for a private campout at one of the iconic settings of their childhood, an empty island off the coast of Maine, to renew their bond of sisterhood. They quickly learn, though, that the island is anything but empty, when they encounter three recently-returned servicemen, who have come to the island to hunt. A misunderstanding quickly turns to tragedy, and the three women soon find themselves the targets of the hunt.
