Gorontalo: Traditional Celebration of Tumbilotohe

A. Brief Information

Tumbilitohe derives from Gorontalo language, tumbilo means set and tohe means lamps. Therefore, Tumbilotoho means setting lamps. Historically, it has been celebrated by Gorontalo people since the 15th century. It is usually done on the last three days of Ramadhan month (Fasting month), 27th – 30th of Ramadhan, started from maghrib (6 p.m.) until subuh (4 a.m.).

In the past, it was intentionally aimed for lightening Muslims to distribute Islamic tithe at night. At the time, lightening alliances were made of resin torch and latex. Considering that the stock for resin torch decreased time by time, they had ever turned to padalama (coconut oil) then turned to petroleum.

As the time goes by, now Gorontalo people tend to use modern lamps but some of them prefer to use the petroleum lamps. Those petroleum lamps are hung on every beam decorated by young coconut leaves. Banana, as the symbols of prosperity, are also found on the top of those lamps and also sugar cane as the symbols of sweetness, cordiality and the glory of Eid El-Fitr. This tradition has a distinctive attractive power for the local inhabitants and surrounding people living in Manado, Palu and Makassar.

B. Distinctive Features

Gorontalo City turns into a glittering city when the tradition of Tumbilotohe takes place. Every part of public service buildings such as local government office, mosques, even football yard, is decorated by colourful lamps. Moreover, farmlands and empty land are also full of flickering lamps which are painted with beautiful mosque, calligraphy and Al Qur`an pictures.

This three-day celebration is more interesting when the attraction of bunggo (bamboo cannons) is played by children competing each other. All of those bamboo cannons are faced to the people`s homes, proposed to awaking the people for having sahur (the meal eaten before daybreak during the fasting month). By such atmosphere, you will feel its religious nuance and strong solidarity of surrounding people.

Tumbilotohe is in the city of Gorontalo, Gorontalo Province, Indonesia.

It can be reach by land, water and air transportations. For you living in Sulawesi Island, you can take any public transportation but for you who are outside Sulawesi Island, you must take either water or air transportations. There are two harbours in Sulawesi Island, Gorontalo Harbour and Anggrek Kwandang Harbour in the district of Gorontalo. In addition, for air transportation, there is an airport in the sub-district of Tibawa, Gorontalo District about 35 km from Gorontalo City.

A. Brief Information

Gorontalo Province is the biggest corn producer in Indonesia whose products are exported abroad to Malaysia, Singapore, and Gambia (West Africa). Besides as export commodity, this sweet corn is also used as the ingredient for typical food of Gorontalo people named Binte Biluhuta. Corn is the major ingredient for making binte biluhuta; it is mixed with tuna fish, cakalang fish, tengiri fish and shrimp. It is categorized into fresh and tasty soup, proper to be served on cold weather, especially for people who get flu.

Binte bilihuta is favourite food of Gorontalo people. In 2005, about ten thousand people ate this typical food of Gorontalo Province, standing in a row along Ahmad Yani Street to Panjaitan Street, Gorontalo City. That is why, it got an award from Museum Rekor Indonesia (Indonesian Records Museum) No. 1.761.

B. Distinctive Features

Its distinction from other kinds of food is its various tastes; sweet, sour, and hot, which is dished up in different styles. As a distinction to other foods, its ingredients consisting of chilli, papaya leaves, lime, are put on separated bowl. It totally depend on you, for hot taste, add some chilli that have been ground roughly, while for bitter taste, just put some sliced papaya leaves, then combine them on your soup. However, for sour taste, you may add extract of lime so that you can taste the sour soup blended with krius-krius corn and aromatic basil.

Though its main ingredient is fish, it is not smell or putrid since it is mixed with the tastes of sour, bitter, sweet and hot, typically found on lukewarm binte biluhute.

OTANAHA FORTRESS

Otanaha Fortress is one of omission tourism objects of colonization era in Gorontalo city. This fortress is about 7 km from the downtown.

LIMBOTO LAKE

Lake that has special navigation building is located in road boundary between Batudaa district and Gorontalo city. Gorontalo, recognized as it three position that is; Hulawa, Dungingi (now Tuladenggi sub-district), which both located is boundary by Bolango river. The third position is between two kampongs that is Biawa'o and Limba B this both kampong is become the center birth of Gorontalo city.

At King Botutihe government epoch in 1140, 6 days of Sya'ban month the Center Empire of Gorontalo city had removed from Dungingi to Kuwala, that is between the two kampongs. The evacuation was based of the Gorontalo downtown empire, because the Dutch government, starts mastered Gorontalo Port, by sent their officer, and starts to build some buildings to strengthen their position in empire region.

This municipal administration is marked by build Baiturrahim Mosque, and from this mosque, Sultan Botutihe, develop and preserve jointed custom 'Syara' and 'Syara' jointed 'Kitabullah (Al-Qur'an)'. Six days of Sya'ban months in year calculation, on 19 March 1728, thereby, the Gorontalo city age up to 2001 is 273 years old.

After getting out of the colonization hand namely since Indonesia had proclaimed the independence in 1945 and there was the government regulation number 11 in 1953, hence Gorontalo city include one part of the autonomous North Sulawesi. Then with the constitution number 18 in 1965 about government fundamental of area, name of Gorontalo township become municipality, and the constitution number 22 in 1999 about government area, Gorontalo municipality status become Gorontalo city. With the forming and the declared of Gorontalo province on 16 February 2001, hence Gorontalo city is also declared as provincial capital.

This town is properly remembered as the eldest town in Indonesia region east side, the center of Islam expansion, because its custom is jointed 'Syara' is the 19th custom area (Farha Daulima).

SEA GARDEN OF HARI ISLAND

In the Indonesia language, "hari" means daylight. Because of the way the sun's ray's reflection the water of the sea surrounding this island, the local people call it the "Island of Daylight", Hari Island. Swimming, boating and other marine sports find a nature home along these shores. Diving to see the colorful fish in a sea garden setting of coral is a popular activity.

MORAMO WATERFALL

No other in Indonesia is quite like the Moramo Waterfall. It is unique in traversing a 2 Km plateau, with 127 separate terraced plumes, with the top of the waterfall some 100 meters above is basin pool. The falls have seven main terraces, each with its own natural bathing pool.

This combination produces clean, fresh, cool air in the shade production tropical, jungle-forest setting, which surrounds the falls. This is the perfect habitat for Southeast Sulawesi's native animals and birds. Those who love nature at its purest will find this an ideal environment. Only 65 km east of Kendari, Moramo Waterfall is easily accessible by car or by boat, crossing Moramo Bay, with wide panoramic scenery of the sea.

MORAMO BAY

This clean, pollution-free bay is only one and a half hours by car or speedboat from Kendari. The white sand beaches of Moramo Bay are host to all sorts of water activities and sports; from sun bathing to water skiing, swimming to boating, observation of numerous fish life under the clear and cleans water.

RAWA AOPA WATUMOHAI NATIONAL PARK

Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park comprises an area of 105,000 ha in South-East Sulawesi province. It was gazette in 1990, becoming Sulawesi's fourth national park. The park is named after the swampy area Aopa and the mountain Mount Watumohai.

Large parts of Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park consist of savanna with palm trees and Alang-Alang. The coast is relatively flat and covered with mangrove swamp forest. Inland the terrain first changes in savanna whereas more inland is hilly with tropical rainforest. This area is dominated by several hills including Mokaleleo Mountain, located in the north and Matoha upland plain (270m) in the east. Mount Watumohai (550 m) and Mount Mendoke (980 m), the highest points in the area, are located in the south. The swampland Rawa Aopa forms an important habitat for water birds. The birds can be watched from Harapan Island, a small island with a hut for bird-watchers in the middle of the swamp.

BUTON ISLAND AND THE SULTANATE OF BUTON

To the southeast of the Sulawesi mainland, Buton Island remains part of Southeast Sulawesi Province. Long before the independence of Indonesia and the unification of Buton with the rest of the country, Buton was a kingdom. This existed from the 14th to the 16th centuries. After this, and until Indonesia's independence, it remained a Sultanate.

During the Sultanate period, the residents conducted trade and communicated with both China and Majapahit Kingdom, on Java Island. Interestingly, the first ruler who governed this region was a queen and the last ruler was a king. It was the last ruler, King Laki Laponto, who became the first Buton Sultan.

Buton Island is well known for its asphalt, called Buton or Butas Asphalt, and for its teak and ironwood. There is daily boat service from Kendari, with a stopover in Raha, the capital city of Muna Island.

The most fascinating culture appeal of Buton Island can be enjoyed when local people conduct ceremonies, celebrations and folk events, which welcome honored guest. One such unique event is "Pakande-kandea", when foods and cakes are offered to visitors and traditional dances are performed.

NIRWANA BEACH AND BONE OGEN

irwana Beach is located about 12 km from Baubau village, and is the capital of Buton Regency. It is well liked for swimming and beach sports recreational, along its white sandy shore and its small adjoining island, only thirty minutes away by sailboat. Fishing is said to be ideal on this small island.

HORSE FIGHTING

This lively event in Southeast Sulawesi is found only in Raha (Muna Island). Fighting is held on the ceremonies occasion, mainly during thanks giving ceremonies, to welcome honored guest, or upon special requests. A feminine horse will be pulled in front of two horses. All horses will fight each other to get the feminine horse. While these contents were previously held in open fields, in around populated areas, today they are conducted in reserved compounds and tracks.

NAPABALE AND MOTONUNU LAKE

Napabale Lake is at the foot of a hill, connected to the sea via a natural tunnel. At low tide swimmers can traverse this span of water for a most unusual experience.

However it is considered unadvisable and dangerous to attempt this feat during high tide, as the water rises to only one half meter from the roof of the tunnel.

Motonunu Lake is known for its clean, clear, dark blue water. Through it is also connected to the sea, its water remains fresh and not salty. Both lakes are 15 km from Raha, the capital of Muna Regency, on Muna Island. They are accessible by sailboat, from Raha, in only 45 minutes.

AMBORASI RIVER

Around the waterfall, there are green trees with its fresh air, so that, we will forget that we stay at the center of Kendari city. In the holiday, this place is become the recreation and camp place. Till now on, this waterfall has functioned as the water source for the society around it.

Batu Gong Beach

Batu Gong Beach is located about 15 km north of Kendari city. Batu refers to 'Batu' and 'Gong' refers to a big stone that voiced a Gong (the Java music instrument) voice if the seawater has hit it. GEOGRAPHICALLY

Total peninsula area and the province island are about 38,140 square kilometers, and the sea is about 110,000 square Kilometers, with border area:

T O PO G R A P H Y

Topography of Southeast Sulawesi is dominated by hills. There is some lowland plain between hills, and these are potential for agriculture activity.

G E O L O G Y

The geological condition of the province consists of sediment rocks are about 67.64 %, metamorphoses rocks about 19. 78 % and coagulated rocks is 15.58 %. The general soil type is red yellow podzolic.

H Y D R O L O G Y

Southeast Sulawesi has many rivers, such as; Lalindu, Lasolo, Konaweha, Lahumbuti, Lawe Roraya, Rante Angin, Poleang, Meeta, longkowala, Kambara, kabongka, Towari, Oko-Oko, Sampolawa, etc.

Konaweaha river has stream's flow as about 200 m3 / sec. It has built Wawatobi Dam on this river, which is expected to irrigate the rice-field of up to 18,000 Ha. The Lalindo, Lasolo and Konaweha are very potential rivers for hydroelectric power. To set up the Industrial sector in the near future we need to supplied by PLN (State Electric Company), but in general for household consumers.

There are also some swamplands in this region; such as Aopa swampland with total area about 32,800 Ha and Tinonda Swampland with total about 1,240 Ha. The swampland and the rivers (e.g. Lahumbuti) can be use as water resource for agriculture development, hydroelectric power and as tourism object.

C L I M A T E

The highest temperature in the province is about 31o c, the lowest is 19o C, and average is 25o C to 27o C. The rainfall in Southeast Sulawesi generally is not same in all regions, so that, this province can be divided in two regions, namely:

Wet region, with total rainfall of more than 2,000 mm per year is Northern part region of Kendari - Kolaka, and Northern part of Buton and Wakatobi area.

Semi-dry region, with a total rainfall of less than 2,000 mm per year the region of Kendari and Kolaka and Southern part of Southeast Sulawesi peninsula.

During five years later, the average rainfall in this province is about 1,904 mm per years, and the average of rainy-dry-days is 109 days per year.

There are two seasons all over Indonesia as well as on Sulawesi Island. Temperature range from 21 C to 35 C. Average temperature through the year is 27. Dry season is from May to October and rainy season is from November to April. The heavy rain happened in January and February.

O C E A N O G R P H Y

The offshore water of Southeast Sulawesi covering about 110,000 sq. Km and has an abundance of fish. The potential resource is estimated at 500,000 tons of Fish annually. Permanent potency is 250,000 tons consist of Tuna, Skipjack, yellow fin, lobsters, shrimp, trout's and some other sea-products such as seaweed, sea cucumbers, and pearls.

D E M O G R A P H Y

In 1990, due the result of population census there was 1,349,619 people in this province. Now, in post 1997, the population became 1.693.400people. The density, according to the area of the province is 38,140 sq. Km 0 is about 39 people per square kilometer.

TRANSPORTATION

Mainland Transportation.

Mainland transportation system is very important for further Southeast Sulawesi economic development. The improvement and extension of road system will provide to motivate marketable commodities and row materials into and out the rural agriculture production areas, and to the manufacturing and distribution center's.

Until the end of 1998 the length of road is Southeast Sulawesi has been developing about 8,444.78 kilometers.

Ferry Transportation

The rapid mainland transportation activities, which connects Southeast Sulawesi and South Sulawesi, Torobulu to Tampo and Tolandona to Bau-Bau, has an important role for the region economic growth. The Government has a great emphasis of the improvement of this ferry transportation system.

Sea Transportation

Marble

Deposit of marble is found at three location namely in Kolaka region, kendari region and Buton with reserve of more than one trillion metric tons of marble and crystalline limestone. The color are white, Grey, dark and red.

Nickel

Nickel deposit is found in southern part of Southeast Sulawesi Peninsula. It is mixed with iron, asbestos, and chromate. A state mining company on area up to 7,000 ha is exploiting this mineral.

Hydro-electric

Capacity of power supply at the end of the sixth PELITA is about 65 MW. The state electric company (PLN) is able to cover about 25 MW only. The gap between the supply and demand will be more increasing especially for industries. It is expected that the problem can be solve by build hydroelectric station the electric output is cheaper. There are three potential river for this purpose namely lalindu, konaweha and Lasolo rivers.

A. Brief Information

Lake Poso, which is situated at an altitude of 657 meters, is a worth visiting tourism destination located in Tentena City, Poso District, Central Sulawesi Province. This site, which is the third biggest lake in Indonesia, ranges 32 km in length and 16 km in width, with 360 meters of deep water in the south and 510 meters deep in the north.

The panoramic view of surrounding area lures many visitors to come to the lake. Its fresh air, white sand, and green forest on the slope nearby the lake are distinguishing features. Moreover, the lake can be easily accessed for its strategic location at the cross sea voyage connecting Toraja, Poso, Gorontalo, and Manado. Hence, you can get there in ease.

The water in Lake Poso tends to be pure and clean at all times. Though fast current from several tributaries flows to the lake, the water keeps clean, pure, and turquoise. Central Sulawesi:The Mausoleum of Raja Mandapar

A. Brief Information

Raja Mandapar was the first king of Banggai Kingdom who was inaugurated in 1600 A.D. by the former king named sultan Said Berkad Syam given title as Mumbu Doi Gedong. He was a son of Ternate Sultanate‘s war commander named Adi Cokro, who married to a Portuguese girl.

In addition, his father titled as Mumbu Doi Jawa, was a war commander successfully unifying Banggai Islands and Banggai Land together. For that reason, Raja Mandapar possessed charismatic leadership during his tenure ranging from 1600 tot 1625 A.D. because of his father‘s outstanding leadership characteristic.

Raja Mandapar deceased in 1625 A.D. after ruling Banggai Kingdom for about 25 years. He was a famous king amongst the other kings of Banggai Kingdom. However, his mausoleum was not built in elegance. The mausoleum is just a heap of stones with shelter on it. The mausoleum now is a worth visiting historical tourism destination in Central Sulawesi Province.

B. Distinctive Features

The mausoleum of Raja Mandapar is situated in a highland of Banggai Islands District that is surrounded by three enchanted bays namely Tomini, Tolo, and Banggai bays. While accomplishing pilgrimage to the mausoleum and remembering Raja Mandapar‘s merits, you can watch colourful traditional boats of the Banggai people on those bays. At night, flickering lamps across the bays offer magnificent view of Banggai Islands District. The beauties of Togean nature make many tourists finally choose to remain longer from initially plan. Archipelago that is located in the middle of Tomini Bat is grew by forest area, which have not touched and become shelter for the animals in it. But the real beauty resides in the beach and sea. Various combinations forms of rock unite bluely of clear seawater make the beauty of this place become hardly impressing.

Togean Archipelago is the only place in Indonesia that has three different rock areas but stay in one same area. The three rock areas is atoll rock, barrier rock and coastal rock, all become flora and sea fauna habitat. Atoll rock is coral island form that midst of its there is deep lake. Barrier rock is in a row consecutive rock encircle the island look like fortress or wall on the sea that protect other island in nearness from the sea wave dashing against. TOGEAN ISLAND

BATU DAKA ISLAND

Bata Daka Island is the biggest island and easiest to reached in Togean archipelago. In Batu Daka Island there are two villages that is Bomba and Wakai. Bomba village, they are the settlement area, which located in northwest back part of Togean archipelago. Bomba is the most beautiful place in Togean area and not crowded, hence most tourists' pass this place is just for towards main purpose that is to Wakai in Kadidiri Island. However Bomba is interesting place. Here, the visitor can swim and snorkeling in good location. You also can visit bat cave, which located near to Bomba but to visit this place required by guide.

WAKAI

The biggest settlement area in Togean is Wakai. This place is point of departure for ships, which would towards to Kadidiri Island. In this place there are two lodgings and a number of haberdashery shops. Some kilometers towards hinterland there is waterfall. Tourist can do the pleasing journey towards to waterfall through the villages, which stay in this area. Two lodgings in this place are Wakai Cottages and Togian Island Hotel.

KADIDIRI ISLAND

Kadidiri Island, which is located not far from Wakai, is the center of tourism area in Togean Island. Kadidiri Island is very popular island among tourist because the beach is a real good with snorkeling location and dive a real prima and it also available many doss houses. In Westside of the coastal there is consecutive precipitous reef that become rock crab habitat.

MALENGE ISLAND

Malenge Island is island, which rather cloistered but has a real good water territory area for snorkeling with the location not far from the beach. The local resident with NGO help have built the journey route to pass is ambient forest and mangrove forest which good for assisting to know the places or animal habitat in this island like monkey, hornbill, polecat and salamanders. WALEA KODI ISLAND

The only settlement in Walea Kodi Island is in Dolong village, which is fisherman village that is enough stirred. The tourism facility and transportation in this place are very limited. Dolong, have coast that is not too good but there are a number of locations to snorkeling. The lodging in this place is Lima Hotel and Walea Dive Center Resort.

DONGGALA

During colonial, Donggala is port town and commerce that is enough busy in Central Sulawesi region. But when Donggala port had superficiality, hence trade ships that were usually halting-place to this place, move to other port. Now on, Donggala position for tourist, is only as transit town before towards to 'Tanjung Karang', which is the important tourism location in this region.

Karang Foreland

Karang Foreland is located about 5 Km in north of Donggala is coastal area with the shore sand and sea is a real please for water activities like swimming and snorkeling. KOLONODALE

This small town located in one of Tomori Bay angle with the beautiful panorama. Kolonodale is the gateway towards Morowali Garden, which is preserve area. This area has level of height rainfall and takes place approximant during the year. The best time to visit this place is during September and November. Most of lodging, shop and market reside in located area not far from the main dock. The intersecting street in front of market is also functioned as bus terminal.

Tomori Bay

Most of the tourist who reside in Kolonodale would be towards to Morowali and don't exploit the opportunity to look beautiful panorama around Tomori Bay. Around Tomori Bay area there is small bays with rocks ashore meeting with clear seawater. PALU

Palu is the capital Central Sulawesi Province, which geographically this region located in upstate. Town which seldom has rain known as one of dry town in Indonesia with hot air in the afternoon and nocturnal cold. In it history, Palu has ever occupied by Japan army in world second. In general, the tourist visit Palu because wishing trekking to Lore Hindu National Park that reside in south Palu or Tanjung Karang that is reside in north. If reside in Palu it is possible you can visit Central Sulawesi Province Museum that have collection of folk art objects as well as archaeological object. You also can visit traditional house Banua Souraja and Datu Karama. Palu Beach is the cleanness beach.

TENTENA

Tentena which located in back part of north Poso Lake is the wider village and more beautifully from Pendolo. This place encircled of hilly that grew by clove crop. When bloomy clove (finite June to November), clove tree will release clove interest fragrance. Tentena have accommodations facility and complete restaurants, but the beach in Tentena still beautiful compared to in Pendolo. The interesting location, which must be visited when you to reside in Tentena is bridge along 210 meters length that reside in back part to be north Poso Lake. Under the bridge, lake water rapidly flows to enter river to start the length journey towards to sea. Tentena is famous with eel animal with length reach two meters. These animals live in lake base and a lot to exit follow the water current towards river. In the riparian there is Pamona Cave. Panorama near to this cave is enough beautirfull. Farther to the town, in roadway towards to Kolonodale there is Latea cave that contain of dead body bones that buried during in the past.
