In collaboration with Arup Sydney’s lighting and sound designers, we have created an interactive environment for this year’s VIVID Sydney – festival of light, music and ideas.

RICOCHET is a laser takeover of the Suez Canal laneway in The Rocks, as a part of the festival’s interactive light walk. Featuring an intersecting network of laser beams above the narrow laneway, the installation reacts to your movement, triggering a series of light and audio displays that characterise the sparks of idea generation.

The work is a marriage of art, design and technology and we’re excited to see how people move through the installation and themselves become a part of the piece. Good design, in all its guises, should involve its audience, and RICOCHET is really intended to highlight that.

On June 6 at our studio we will have Ronni Kahn talking at de.Frost*. Ronni is CEO and founder of OzHarvest, a non-denominational charity, which redistributes the excess food typically discarded by restaurants, cafes and super markets to those in need.

Ronni will be discussing the growth of OzHarvest’s social impact over the past eight years, taking an in-depth look at the role of corporate partnerships.

Drawing upon her expertise in cause related marketing Ronni will lead a discussion around social responsibility and the quantifiable brand value of not-for-profit organisations.

In yet another collaboration with long-standing clients Manfredi – we have recently completed a brand and packaging re-fresh for their coffee line ‘Espresso di Manfredi’. Introducing the new brand with ‘Sprezzatura’ at its core – an Italian word adopted by the fashion industry to describe the effortless mastery of ones own style.

The project marked the launch of two new coffee blends Audacia (bold) and Chiaro (delicate). We also worked closely with Manfredi and DE Coffee on a range of colour block Ceramica di Manfredi and webpage for the robust coffee range.

Our Environments team recently completed an exciting new project for employees at Commonwealth Bank’s Melbourne call centre. Working in collaboration with Interior Designers Davenport Campbell, we were commissioned to animate the newly refurbished activity-based workplace, whilst inspiring and engaging with staff who are often working on intense, monotonous tasks.

The scope of work included signage and way-finding for the 7 level development, alongside super-sized environmental graphic backdrops that added a distinctly Melbourne identity to the
inner-city office.

The concept involved visually breaking up the building’s floor plate by referencing urban-laneway culture in work zones compared to parklands and nature in the break-out spaces.

Working closely with New York based illustrator James Gulliver Hancock, we established sub-themes of work, rest and play to tell the everyday stories of the city’s inhabitants – but with a fantastical twist. Hidden pockets of quirky detail were incorporated at a micro-scale, as a cheeky nod to the city’s laneways where there is always something new to discover. A graphic language formed from iconic Melbourne architecture also helped embed the signage firmly into its location.

We are excited to see Prince Alfred Park Pool open this week in central Sydney, and it’s been a pleasure to work alongside Neeson Murcutt Architects and City Projects to see this landmark project come to life.

The redevelopment of the existing pool is part of a larger scheme that has seen enormous improvements to this area of the city, including the upgrade of the park and community facilities. The future implementation of a new trigeneration plant at the pool will allow the whole site to be taken off the energy grid – making it Sydney’s first self-powered pool.

We were commissioned to design environmental graphics and signage for the new swimming pool complex. Our contemporary designs set out to highlight the pool’s seriously sustainable initiatives, and the future installation of super-size tree-guards for the surrounding palm trees will provide an interpretive overlay, telling the story of the park’s rich history. Whilst external signage was subtly embedded into the park’s new meadow landscape, inside the pool we dialed up the visual impact, providing lively splashes of colour that reference the site’s circus heritage and the playfulness of water droplets.

de.Frost* is a free event held monthly in our studio, designed to stimulate creative thinking for our staff, clients and wider network.

The position reports to the Creative Director, Anthony Donovan and Environments Design Director and will be assisting in the creative delivery of projects in the Environments team. This includes supporting environmental designers with creative and design development and documentation, from project inception through to construction. Activities may include research and concept mock-ups, set up of creative presentations, assisting with final artwork and documentation under supervision (signage masterplan and message schedule updates, title blocks, draft specifications, transmittals, drawing codes, etc). Projects range from branding and environmental graphics, signage, wayfinding and exhibitions design.

Suitable for graduate or final year student with a keen interest in spatial design, architecture, interiors, signage and the built environment.

Requires experience in a range of software applications, including Illustrator, Photoshop & InDesign. Skills in 3D drawing and renders (3D Studio Max and Sketch Up) desirable

Vince will be talking at the 2013 SEGD conference in San Francisco, held June 6-8.

SEGD’s annual conference is the only international design event focused on communication design for the built environment. The two-day event is a unique mixture of inspirational speakers, hands-on workshops and project tours.

This year aptly named for it’s San Francisco location, ‘Above the Fog’ will be taking a compelling look at innovation within the field, questioning the status quo and exploring new vistas. It’s an incredible honour to be invited as a speaker.
