Many Germans welcome Syrians because they believe they are better educated, speak English, are more cultured and in general more likely to pursue an education and improve their country. At least this is what I've heard said and have read in the local opinion posts. Great for them maybe. But why would WE the People take bring them to the USA except in line with our own interests and priorities? Are they being persecuted for being Muslim? I am for helping the victims of religious persecution so I am 100% for helping any Christian or Jew from barbaric, genocidalor threat. Or others, as long as they don't come with a religion that is openly hostile to the culture and founding principles of the USA, and middle Eastern Islam does come with that threat. To accept Muslims from countries that hate Israel and have neither a culture of religious tolerance nor respect for basic human rights, in particular those of women - that is just working to liquidate your own civilization - something we should NOT DO.

If the majority of Syrian Muslims were loudly known to be vocally and bodily active in the fight against Islamists, Islamism, Islamofascism, terrorism, honor killings, sharia law, the oppression of women and other anti-western horrors ..... (as they should be for their own sake) and if they were loudly advocating and acting to assimilate in the free western world (as opposed to invading and changing it) .... then, I would think differently. Political Satire is not Real News. John Young's Blog on the GOP debate is pure fiction. None of the questions he cites were asked at the GOP debates and none of the TV and Radio personalities he mentions were moderators at any of the debates. And, none of the alleged quotes were made by the GOP candidates. Tragically, newspapers like the Austin American-Statesman publish such satire as "Opinion" in a section of the paper where readers should rightfully expect some modicum of truth. So now, readers of allegedly "Balanced Views from the Left" can regurgitate these deceptively planted, wholly fabricated debate questions and answers as if they were true.

Perhaps I shouldn't worry as those on the left tend to believe this sort of nonsense to be true even when its source is clearly labeled as comedy. Witness how many people actually believe Sara Palin said she saw Russia from her house, even though the source is Tina Fey from a skit on Saturday Night Live.

Sadly, readers of the Austin American-Statesman allegedly "Balanced Views from the Left" did not a get a balanced view today. On the right they discussed a substantive issue which should be of interest to and understood by all voting citizens. On the left they published satire, void of actual substance and pawned off as information, effectively dumbing-down their audience, distorting public debate, and harming our nation.

Important history lesson. There are those that like to paint the USA as a war mongering nation. Wikipidia basically paints us as always being at war, throughout our history - irregardless of the purpose of conflict, morally equivocating things like the holocaust with say Manifest Destiny ... totally ignoring the context of history and what they were doing at the time - nope, just those war mongering Americans out there killing Indians and beating slaves . Talk about ethnocentric rationalization .. and convenient historical amnesia! It seems that reasons for conflict are more or less immaterial to the average mind in Europe. Europeans, especially Germans, pretty much seem to label war as bad no matter the cause - I'd say (before our involvement) that's because they never went to war for a noble purpose. In fact, before the USA, throughout civilization, conquering (stealing) was the model of normality (certainly it was the German model until very recent times - and it was the European model for more than a millennium) - so I assume they just assume that if we're fighting we're doing something bad - no matter the cause. (Is it coincidence? I can't find that the Germans even have a word to separately distinguish evil from just bad). Well the USA is the first nation to depart from that conqueror model of civilization, however imperfectly - so it peeves and hurts me to see our country branded as it is (oftentimes by our own misguided media or as at present by our un-American President). The USA does not have a blameless past, but we do not deserve the image being painted of us by our enemies. Yet it is this image of a bellicose USA that our supposed friends are knowingly or unknowingly accepting as their own image of us - an image fostered by those who would destroy Western Civilization. I just wish it were clear from whose "Ministry of Truth" this image emanates.

Dump Labor Day - Celebrate Veteran's Day

Why on Earth do we celebrate labor day? Imagine how people would feel if we established a national holiday to honor and recognize the contributions of the most productive, those who pay the lion's share of taxes and take the greatest risks in providing employment and creating wealth in our country. We don't have such a day but for around 100 years we have had a holiday to honor the contributions of "workers". Why on Earth do we have a national day off (of school or work) to honor "workers" for their contributions? Everyone who is employed "works", whether they are the CIO of a Fortune 500 company or a day laborer. Only socialists and communists attach a greater value to the labor of "workers" so why do we sanction that failed and deadly ideology with this holiday. Why do we keep labor day as a day off but make (in many schools) Veteran's day a regular school day? I have to take my teens out of school "unexcused" in order for them to attend Veteran's Day events; that's just plain wrong. 47% of employed people in this country pay no income tax, and they are not the "rich" ... they are the recipients of programs funded by those who do pay income taxes. Who honors the 53% who do pay income taxes? It is time to do away with Labor Day as a national holiday.

I believe Syria is a good example for "Give War a Chance", sadly. We in the west should stay out - other than offering humanitarian assistance we need to stear clear. We should not offer military assistance of any sort. The likelihood of blowback far exceeds the chance of our success in engineering a US freindly or even a a peaceful State.

The situation on the ground is always more complicated than most of us can imagine. For a good example, read Barry Rubin's Which Way for Syria? Listen to the Sermons. And heed his conclusions:

Scary report on plans for National Grocery Reform, a report you might expect to see about the government of Hugo Chavez. Alas, this is about the USA. Excerpt:

Many political leaders are now calling for urgent reform to bring spending on food under control. Even worse, while the result of this uncontrolled spending includes the fact that many Americans are overweight, some Americans do not have enough to eat.

Read what progressive candidates are saying about the "Right to Food", and the "need to equalize availability of food". Unsurprisingly, progressive proposals would target the "administrative overhead required to make a profit” in the food industry. Also not a surprise, progressives see "corporate greed" as "the heart of the problem".

Should sales of struggling companies be prohibited; and if so, should government bail them out when they fail? Until when, when they are too big to fail?
What’s your recommended alternative, to have an elite ruling class decide what’s fair and what’s not fair and who the winners are and who the losers will be?
Yes, jobs are lost in restructuring, 750 at this plant in KS. But, should failing businesses be forced to continue until they predictably fail on their own, or worse, are subsidized?
Yes, businesses with the know-how and talent to successfully restructure old or build new successful businesses do (rightfully) make big money – but not just for themselves – there are many thriving businesses that employ far more people than were lost as a result of the initiatives this propaganda piece slurs.
Should our nation’s businesses as a whole become more efficient, productive, and successful - or, less so? Can you legislate against failure?

Yes, jobs are lost in a free market, as it must be. If they are kept from failing in the natural course of free markets then whole economies fail and all kinds of negative unintended consequences ensue.
I'm not a Mitt Romney fan but I challenge you to think beyond this kind of, what is in essence, communist propaganda; it's being broadcast with all the other “hate the free market” kinds of media messages for the same reasons there were “10 minutes of hate” broadcasts in Orwell’s “1984” – to keep you from thinking.
If you fact check beyond this Moveon.org (George Soros) propaganda, the net result of Romney’s involvement in Bain Capital, was a gain of many more successful business and jobs than were lost in the process of restructuring – as a net success. I care about jobs for all people. It is tragic when people lose jobs, when whole towns lose their employers, and when industries fail. But, hating the free market or people who make money leads you, by envy or hate; it also makes you vulnerable to the whims of demagogues who will be glad to control everything and ensure maximum equality – at much lower common denominators.

US legislators of all political persuasions are getting rich on insider trading.
60 Minutes brought this to the attention of many in November 2011.
Published studies found that stock purchases by members of our House of Representatives: “outperform the market by 6 percent.” (9% for democrats, 2% for Republicans), and “positive abnormal returns” are both “economically large” and “statistically significant”. A recent Wall Street Journal article provides interesting examples, names names, and exposes the business of those engaged in harvesting and selling insider information obtained in congress.
Proof abounds, yet although several bills to stop this were introduced over the last few years none became law. Is the time right now?

There are more advocates of a bill and sunshine on the issue now. The current Stock Act, H.R. 1148: Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act would make it illegal for Congressional members to profit on information learned in closed-door meetings. A Senate bill by the same name was introduced recently and another is in draft. And in the House, Eric Cantor advocates expanding the current bill to address more than just stocks, e.g. land deals.
Like Texas Governor Rick Perry , I advocate passing the Stock Act to “ensure that insider trading by members of Congress results in prison time, and not unseemly profits.” And, I am encouraged that there are over 200 co-signers now, although I am sure many signed on as window dressing for an election year. But, the bill still has a long way to go to become law.
The lobby for corruption (e.g., Fannie Mae, the Federal Reserve) is dauntingly entrenched. But, the form of corruption addressed by the STOCK act is readily understood by anyone and in clear view. If we just keep complaining, “We the People” can defeat it. Call your representatives.

I don't find it wierd for family members to spend time and say goodbye to a dead baby. I do find it wierd that there's no outrage from the faux-empathetics on the left, outrage at those who so cruelly use this tragedy as food for a a deplorable ad hominem argument.
I applaud Mark Steyn for speaking up on this one. I particularly like this quote:

The faux-empathetic left has always labeled conservatives as dumm or wierd or extreme or worse; it's part of their routine propoganda tactics. So what do they want democracy for? This is scary. These are not "secular", democracy seeking good guys. This is not like the fall of the Berlin Wall. Anyone (including John McCain who) called for immediate step down of Mubarak is cheering for a "no government" chaos, in Islamofascist takeover, imminent war on Israel, loss of an American ally in the middle East, greater risk of war between Middle Easter states (jockeying for power in the Caliphate), and probably WWIII. Among highlights from the Pew Poll:

• 49% of Egyptians say Islam plays only a "small role" in public affairs under President Hosni Mubarak, while 95% prefer the religion play a "large role in politics."
• 84% favor the death penalty for people who leave the Muslim faith.
• 82% support stoning adulterers.
• 77% think thieves should have their hands cut off.
• 54% support a law segregating women from men in the workplace.
• 54% believe suicide bombings that kill civilians can be justified.
• Nearly half support the terrorist group Hamas.
• 30% have a favorable opinion of Hezbollah.

This reminds me. We need a law prohibiting any conceivable aspect of Sharia law from in any way, ever, influencing our legal and governmental systems (Dearborn MI).

I know a lot of EU taxpayer dollars have gone into the infrastructure for Europe's playgrounds Last I looked, roads and beaches in Croatia and Greece are plastered with "Your EU Euro at Work" signs. So, it seems only right that EU taxpayers get a return on their investments, in the form of government paid vacations. Or? Oh, yes, but what about the under-taxed? Will they have the same rights to the same vacations? .

To you who use slanderous, pejorative labels in referring to me or others who oppose President Obama’s agenda:

Most Americans disagree with Obama on health care and most Americans are opposed to what the Democrats are doing or threatening to do to our economy (witness Congress’ 14% and falling approval rating). Are you saying that most Americans are crazy racist idiots?

No congressional republican voted for Obama’s health care bill. Are you saying they are all crazy racist idiots?
Democrats are a majority in Congress. Obama only needs his own party’s votes to pass anything he wants. Still, Obama didn’t have enough congressional Democrats’ votes to pass health care until a couple of days ago; it took him a whole year of bribes and arm twisting (many or most are public record) to get enough votes in his own party to get the bill passed. Are the Democratic members of Congress who opposed the bill all crazy racist idiots?

Opposition to Obama isn’t about race or charisma or looks or age. I haven’t a racist bone in my body and I’m not crazy. I also absolutely do not wish harm to the President. I think he’s a good looking, charismatic guy. His appearance is the kind of vibrant image you want in a leader. Still,

I am convinced that his politics threaten the solvency and sovereignty of our country, and the world in the long run. I also believe that his politics are an affront and a threat to the economic, civil, and political freedom of US citizens.
I have opposed all of Obama’s agenda. Much of it serves no legitimate purpose, some of it is unconstitutional, some is racist (reverse racism if you will), some is fascist (i.e.; nationalizing much of the banking auto and insurance industry; collusion with unions), and all of it is devastating to our economy.

Why would you believe that opponents of Obama are crazy or racist or worse?
I never understood why supporters of collectivist, leftist politics are so fond of using slanderous, pejorative labels in referring to people they disagree with.

I condemn such politics, as do most in the center and right of US politics.
I do understand the appeal of labeling opponents: labels are easy to remember and regurgitate; you get to feel smart and popular because you’re agreeing with what the masses are taught to believe. But, what’s the point?

Why can't you have a civil discussion based on facts and issues instead?

The war on conservative speech has moved from the White House to your neighborhood pews. Left-wing church leaders want the Federal Communications Commission to crack down on "hate speech" over cable TV and right-leaning talk-radio airwaves. President Obama's speech-stifling bureaucrats seem all too happy to oblige.
The "interfaith coalition for media justice" is led by the United Church of Christ. Yes, that's the same church of Obama's race-baiting, Jew-bashing ex-pastor Jeremiah Wright. Other members include the Presbyterian News Service, the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the National Council of Churches. These religious liberals have partnered with the National Hispanic Media Coalition, which filed a petition in January demanding that the FCC collect data, seek public comment and "explore options" for combating "hate speech" from staunch critics of illegal immigration.

I cannot say this often enough - your freedom of speech is under a well-funded, well-organized attack. Every freedom loving American needs to watch for these attacks vigilantly, speak up loudly and boldly, and fight back by spreading the word and expressing your opposition on this perilous danger.

Freedom of Speech is one of the most critical rights to hold on to, for dear life. The 1^st Amendment to our constitution states that Congress shall make no law “abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press”. Yet, this right is under assault. After essentially nationalizing large segments of the banking and auto industries, and while working to nationalize health care, our government is now moving aggressively to curtail our freedom of speech by taking control of speech in the media, starting with talk radio.
Leftists in Congress tried and failed to pass legislation that would curtail freedom of speech,
with the so-called "Fairness Doctrine". Now they’re trying to achieve that goal by administrative fiat, through regulatory control.
The initiative is led by one of President Obama’s advisory “Czars”, our new Mark Lloyd. Lloyd, the chief diversity officer of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an avowed Marxist Socialist who publicly praises Hugo Chavez’s takeover of the media in Venezuela! This must be stopped, at all (peaceful) costs.

Rush is not just an Entertainer!

Individual rights and capitalism are under attack. Meanwhile, the GOP has been groping for several years for a marketable identity instead of standing up for, and voting in line with the principles of freedom it ostensibly stands for. It is time to retire GOP leaders who place value in things like being able to reach across the aisle instead of defending our liberties. The GOP needs leaders who can persuasively convey and courageously defend our constitution and our liberty. Watching who says what about Rush will give us a good clue who to pay attention to.

I had a lot of respect for Michael Steele until I heard him call Rush an entertainer. Would he call Laura Ingraham an entertainer? How about Sean Hannity or Glenn Beck? SNL is entertainment. Stephen Colbert is an entertainer. Does Steele consider Rush's opinions and strategy to be nothing more than truthiness? If so, I beg to differ.

Michael Steele's comment was an undeserved insult to Rush and, I would add, to his listeners. In making the comment, Steele denigrated the value of Rush Limbaugh's opinions and contribution to Conservative thought. However, the greater downside of Steele's comment is that it reveals a worrisome lack of political courage on his part. Steele agrees with the principles that Mr. Limbaugh so boldly and fearlessly advocates. So, why did he make the comment he made?

Republicans had better want Obama to Fail

UPDATE: My apologies to Virginia Representative Eric Cantor. In the previous version of this post, I included a quote from the Washington Times that falsely attributed Cantor with a comment he did not make.

I want this president to fail on many of his objectives. Any elected republican that can not say this and cannot shout these things loudly and proudly needs to retire now. Among the things that I want this president to fail on:

I want President Obama to fail at any attempt to strengthen the stranglehold of unions on business in this country.
I want President Obama to fail in any action that would infringe upon my individual rights. For example, I want President Obama to fail at any action:
- that would infringe upon freedom of speech whether it be public or private, on radio or TV, on the Internet, in print, or elsewhere (be there such);
- that would infringe upon my 2nd amendment rights as they stand today; or
- that would infringe upon any other of my individual rights
I want President Obama to fail in any initiative that increases the number of persons dependent on welfare; for example, I want him to fail in his effort to reverse the successful Welfare to Work provisions made possible by Newt Gingrich, his Congress, and the Contract with America.
I want President Obama to fail at his efforts to increase State dependency on the federal government and further dilute their rights under the 10th Amendment.
I want President Obama to fail at nationalizing banks, forcing banks to take loans they don't request, forcing banks to write off loans they have the legal right to collect on, or forcing them to make more risky loans.
I want President Obama to fail at any attempt to give citizenship to illegal aliens.
I want President Obama to fail at all attempts to expand the role of the federal government in health care.
I want President Obama to fail at any attempt to implement Cap and Trade.
I want President Obama to fail at enlarging government in any way.
I want President Obama to fail at bailing out the auto industry.
I want President Obama to fail at slandering capitalism or dismantling what few remnants of capitalism are still alive in this economy.

The above is just my spur of the moment short list. Somebody needs to start a web site to address specifically all the many discrete plans, dreams, attempts, etc., on which We the People want President Obama to fail.

Nuclear Materials Missing - Energy Department, too Big to Fail?

Dept of Energy cannot account for nuclear materials. Wait. Aren't they too big to fail?

In a must-read article on Atlas Shrugs, Pamela Geller makes the convincing case that -
Something of Historic Proportion is Happening. Now we learn that nuclear material, lots of it, is unaccounted for - missing. Could this be yet another clue to whatever the something is that clearly is happening?

Is there a connection between missing nuclear material and the something that someone may be planning for us?

The question begs a serious response, especially in light of so many causes for alarm.

Witness the blatant disregard for our constitution that the majority of our so-called representatives in Washington, by their actions, display with impunity. Or, did I miss the right to force bailouts on banks in my last read of the constitution?
Consider assaults on our individual rights. Or, does anybody really believe that the euphemistically named Fairness Doctrine is actually about fairness?
Study what's being discussed in the name of Stimulus. See if you can correlate line items or earmarks in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to those few enumerated powers we grant to our Federal Government in our Constitution.
Ponder the power plays. Why would a bill to provide payback and power to unions bear the oxymoronic title - "Employee Free Choice Act" ? Does a ruse by any name smell the same? Why again is the White House taking control of the Census?
Suspect the secrecy. I learned of the missing nuclear materials in an article on Government Executive; I also found note of it in Homeland Security Today. Perhaps some details should not be made public. Still, where was the MSM on this story?

Even if there were no cause for alarm, it would be naive to ignore the possible connection between unaccounted for nuclear materials and those who might use them to do harm. You don't have to be paranoid or believe in conspiracy theories to make this connection. But who can we trust to get to ground truth and protect us, without misusing this as an opportunity to scare us out of liberty? What say the party of change? Will you act now to secure our nuclear material, locate lost materials, and protect us against the threat of its misuse? Or, will you wait for the next audit report?
Certainly, protecting us from the threat of nuclear materials lost in our own country is a more legitimate use of federal funds than are so many projects in the so-called stimulus bill. But, will this administration allocate resources to our protection from this threat? Or will doling out funds on wetlands for mice, favors for unions, Acorns, or Planned Parenthood organizations take priority? These are the priorities of looters; they are misplaced priorities that may stand in the way of our very survival. How cruel is that?

.... rather than investigating ... Energy officials wrote off significant quantities of nuclear material from the department's inventory records. ... the quantities written off were significant ... potentially pose serious health hazards."
... Energy could not accurately account for the quantities and locations of nuclear material at 15 out of 40, or 37 percent, of facilities reviewed. The materials written off included 20,580 grams of enriched uranium, 45 grams of plutonium, 5,001 kilograms of normal uranium and 189,139 kilograms of depleted uranium.

Why are they concerned about depleted uranium if it is harmless? That's what the Pentagon, VA, and manufacturer of hardened munitions have been telling our troops and veterans who have Gulf War Syndrome, cancer, and leukemia. Depleted uranium is definitely a unique element; it becomes non lethal in the presence of disability claims.
