With so many blended families, levels of formality, and types of hosts, it can be difficult to know what the correct wording is for your situation.
Traditional Wording

For the bride and groom who cherish long-standing traditions, conventional wording and spelling will govern their invitation choices. Some specific rules for formal wedding invitations are as follows:

* The invitation to a wedding ceremony in a house of worship reads “Mr. and Mrs. Julian Bruce Clemens request the honour” (using the traditional “u” spelling) “of your presence.” “Favour,” as in “the favour of a reply,” also uses the traditional spelling.

* No punctuation is used, except after abbreviations such as “Mr.” and “Mrs.” or when phrases requiring separation occur in the same line, such as in the date.

* Numbers in the date are spelled out, as in “the twenty-sixth day of July,” but long numbers in a street address may be written in numerals: “1345 Hubarb Drive.”

* Half hours are written as “half after four o’clock” — not as “half past four” or as “four-thirty.”

Less Formal Wording

When less formality is desired, alternatives to traditional wording can be used.

* Semiformal wording may read, “The pleasure of your company is requested at the marriage of…”

* Informal wording may read, “Please join us as we celebrate the marriage of…”

Destination Weddings

You needn’t add anything special to your destination-wedding invitations, but you should mail them much sooner than you would typical wedding invitations — at least four months prior to the wedding. You should also strongly consider sending save-the-date cards or emails prior to the wedding invitations so that guests can arrange their schedules accordingly (and perhaps make a vacation out of their trip). If your destination is a popular vacation spot, you should definitely get in touch with guests early on.

Additional information, such as guest lodging and travel information, can be mailed separately to those who send positive response cards; don’t try to stuff it all into your wedding invitations. Posting such information on your personal wedding website is ideal and will speed the process for your guests — they can book travel and hotel accommodations right online.

Caterer/Banquet Manager

15% to 20% (usually included in contract, however, if the caterer or manager has done an exceptional job, an additional $1.00 - $2.00 per guest is suggested.)

Waitstaff

15% to 20% (usually included in contract, however, if it is not included, the tip should be given to the maitre d’ or head waiter along with an additional 1% - 2%.)

Bartenders

• Always compare prices. Even though you may meet with one vendor and fall in love with that person’s ideas, it is in the client’s best interest to measure that with someone else’s thoughts. By receiving proposals from a few vendors, you can compare prices, and also see who will give you more for your money. Some vendors will be very attentive to your needs, and the level of their devotion to your wedding will be outlined in their proposal and during your initial consultation. When you see a vendor who is willing to go the extra mile for a client (i.e. staying later than necessary during the day of, is always prompt when returning your calls, listens to your concerns), you know this person will perform to the best of his/her capabilities when it really counts on your wedding day.
• A piece of advice that should not be ignored is to get everything in writing. From your vendors, to your ceremony location, it is in your best interest to have your wants stated in a written contract. Some officiants tend to not want to send out a contract, soit is suggested that you ask him/her to write a simple letter acknowledging all the services expected for the wedding day. These written documents can act as an insurance policy if these vendors do not comply with your requests in the end. Also, if you are planning on doing something unique (using unusual flowers, for example), it is even more important that it is written so nothing falls through the cracks. Most reputable vendors are used to providing contracts to their clients because it also protects them from liability due to a disorganized client.  The bottom line is that if a vendor you approach is reluctant to put things in writing, ask yourself why are they so afraid to commit before you hand them any money.
• When meeting with prospective vendors, one should ask if he/she is certified or is a member of an affiliated national group. While being in an organization or havin a certification does not automatically make one vendor better than another, it does show that this individual took an extra step in their profession. Likewise, just because a vendor does not belong to a specific organization does not mean that your event will suffer by using their services.  In truth, that particular vendor may simply be new to the business or new to your market.  Generally speaking, earning a good reputation through word of mouth and satisfied customers is worth much more than a wall of certifications and awards.
