Dance You’re On Fire – “Blockade” Music Video

I haven’t posted in ages. Here is the last music video that we (The Now Museum) did for Dance You’re On Fire. We basically shot it over a weekend in and around Joburg. Also here is the behind the scenes video that gives you a glimpse into what went into the making of the video. Overall we are pretty stoked with how it came out and so I hear it is getting quite a lot of plat time on DSTV’s channel MK89.

Sim#6 – “Sad Place” Music Video

This is a music video created entirely through stop-motion photos. The impressive part is that all of the photos were taken with a Sony Ericsson cell phone. I really like the colour grading and all the rad editing and overlays. There isn’t much information about it around so I am not sure who it was created by or is it is even the real music video for the track. It is still a very cool music video none-the-less.

Cisco Advert

This Cisco advert is very much in line with the whole corporate thang which I am not usually a big fan of, but I just really like the use of still photos composited over a big 3D rotating set up blocks which are in turn composited over real footage. It looks great. The ad was created by animator Chris Pettit.

Thom Yorke – “Harrowdown Hill” Music Video

This is the music video from ex-Radiohead front man Thom Yorke for his song “Harrowdown Hill” from his solo album “Eraser”. This video is visually very interesting. It uses a combination of stop-motion photography, politically disturbing footage of riots and that whole new “smallgantic” technique that some people have been experimenting with lately. Director Chel White from Bent Image Lab explains how they achieved the “smallgantic” look:

“The process involves splitting the footage up into several vertical planes that move back over the perceived z-axis, or into the image along its perceived depth. These planes are then affected with varying degrees of blur to simulate a shallow depth of field. If done right, the amount of blur increases smoothly as it moves along the planes of the image. Next, these levels of blur are animated to simulate a change in focus or to compensate for the forward movement of the camera.”

This video has won numerous awards at festivals such as The Worldwide Short Film Festival, MVPA and FutureShorts.

“A Record Of Life” Animation

This is a really rad animation that serves as what seem to be a quick look at the evolution of earth through scientific drawings. As the authors state it is “a short animation loosely based on the scientific recording of life’s great species. And how this has given us clues that piece together, for us to discover the secrets of the evolution and diversity of life on Earth.” I like how it is visually interesting and unique, telling an unusual story. The video was created by British designer/illustrator duo Owen Gatley and Luke Jinks.

Nickelodeon Idents

These are a series of short-animations for Nickelodeon that were created by German company Dyrdee Media. They were created using a combination of stop-motion footage and Aftereffects. I just love it because the animated characters are so cute.

“The Forest” – A Short Film

This is a short animated film that was conceived, written and directed by David Scharf. It is a thought-provoking story about a little girl who tries to stand up to the hostile society that we live in. The style of animation is really cool and I can really relate to the message behind the story.

Music Videos From Prodigy’s “Invaders Must Die” Album

Here are two videos from Prodigy’s latest album “Invaders Must Die”. The first video is for their first track on the album, “Invaders Must Die”. The music video was created by A3Dance, the same guys that created that highly questionable Benni Benassi “Satisfaction” music video. This video isn’t that amazing. Not good but, not awful either. Ok the editing is rad at some points. But since Prodigy rocks and the track is so freaking awesome they are excused.

This is more like it. This video is awesome, rad, cool, awesome! This is for their track “Omen”. The crazy frantic editing, jittering camera work, unusual camera angles and rad use of lighting make a for a music video that definitely suits the sound of the song perfectly. This video is also made by A3Dance.

New Standard Bank Ad

This is the new Standard Bank TV commercial that launches their new “Moving Forward” pay-off line. It is part of a series of similar ads it seems. I saw this on TV the other day and was super impressed with the animation. To be honest I was a bit disappointed at the end to find out who the ad was for (Standard Bank and I have not been friends for quite a while). The best part of this ad is that the animation was created locally and looks amazing! The ad was created by agency TBWA/HUNT/LASCARIS. I couldn’t find any more details online about who directed and animated it. Oh well.
