Complementary therapists (Cancer Services): Louise Page, Sarah Hews and Victoria Dalgleish with copies of Life of Pi

The complementary therapy team came up with a novel way of inspiring patients undergoing cancer treatment – a best-selling book.

As part of World Book Night, complementary therapist Sarah Hews was selected to hand out 48 free copies of The Life of Pi: a thought-provoking book about a young man travelling across the sea in a lifeboat with a tiger, after becoming ship wrecked. Sarah said: “It is about what we learn about ourselves while going through stressful parts of our lives, how to deal with fear and danger and how to tell the story afterwards. It could be seen as an analogy of the cancer journey.”

The author Yann Martell said he hoped that ‘all who receive my book reach safe harbour’. They were distributed to patients on the haematology, oncology and teenage cancer wards at University College Hospital. Sarah applied to the event organisers outlining why she liked the book and who she wanted to give it to. Her application was successful and the 48 copies were delivered to her nearest bookshop in south London. She then had to get them to work in a wheely suitcase! Sarah added: “This is everything we wish for the cancer patients at this hospital. It seemed a very appropriate book to me and it’s also a really exciting read for those stuck in a hospital bed!”

The launch of World Book Night in conjunction with BBC2 was held on March 5. Members of the public were asked to apply to become a ‘giver’ of their chosen book – selected from 25 titles. Visit the World Book Night website for more information.

I’ve started my training to incorporate The Reiki National Occupational Standards (NOS) into my teaching. I recommend Doreen Sawyer who you can now either train to these standards with or for teachers to learn to teach them.

My Reiki 1 & 2 training will now include NOS for people who want to practice publicly but they are still stand alone courses. Using Reiki for personal/spiritual healing, development and use with friends and family either having Reiki 1 and or 2 is all you need and is a fantastic journey and gift to yourself.

If you are clear that you want to work publicly and want to learn with me you would need to attend another course which I have now started to compile. I’m planning for this course to be available September 2011 and it will take 2 terms of attendance. To do this course you would still of needed to of completed Reiki 1 & 2 in accordance to the NOS.

Warm regards on this Sunny Sunday, Victoria

A UCLH cancer patient raised nearly £13,000 by traveling 4,300 miles in a classic car to say ‘thank you’ for his treatment.

Colin Craythorne drove his 1982 Citroen 2CV from University College Hospital all the way to Vancouver, Canada, in what he called The Journey of Hope. The drive took place between May 23 and June 19.

He was joined by fellow cancer patient Paul Rodman who raised an additional £2,000 for the UCLH Leukaemia and Lymphoma Unit.

The unit enabled Colin and Paul to receive complementary therapy in addition to their conventional chemotherapy treatment.

Colin, who benefited from reiki and reflexology, said the service saved his life. “The reiki and reflexology lifted me from periods of depression into more positive thoughts. It’s a fantastic service and if it wasn’t available I wouldn’t be here today.”

Colin was diagnosed with cancer in May 2006 and is now in remission.

He added: “I think my recovery was down to the aims I gave myself. When I was in hospital at my lowest ebb and I thought I was going to die a nurse told me to set myself three aims. They were: to be out of hospital for my wife’s 60th which I achieved; to be around for my own 60th which I achieved last year and to be married to my wife longer than she was married to her ex-husband, which will happen next year!”

Gemma Trout, leukaemia clinical nurse specialist, said: “The reason that Colin did this journey was very simple. He wanted to say thank you – and support patients going through their own diagnosis.

“In particular, Colin found the Complementary Therapy Team at UCLH incredibly supportive and helpful throughout his treatment. The protected time that a complementary therapy treatment provides for patients is invaluable, giving them a chance to rest and reflect.”

Patients can experience reiki therapy, reflexology, aromatherapy massage and a supportive chat during the very long days in hospital. Colin is splitting his donation between complementary therapy and T16 South where he received his care during and after his chemotherapy regimens.

Complementary therapy is given free to haematology including all daycare patients, relatives – and staff and this is paid for partly from 0099, the Leukaemia & Lymphoma Unit’s fund.
