Causes and Risk Factors of Feline Diabetes

Feline diabetes is common in cats and there are different causes and risk factors that may make some cats more susceptible to the disease than others. For instance, compared to female cats, male cats have a one and a half times higher chance of developing the condition. Part of this increase in probability is due to the fact that neutering doubles the risk.
Another major risk factor that can lead to feline diabetes is obesity. Obese cats are believed to be more than four times as likely to develop a resistance to insulin compared to cats that are of a healthy weight. The increase in body fat makes it much harder for insulin to perform its job, because the fat tissue creates hormones that lower the effectiveness of insulin.
In addition, feline diabetes typically tends to be diagnosed in older cats (above the age of 10). In many cases, the reason why age is a contributing factor is as a cat grows older, its physical activity tends to slow down as does its metabolism. Thus, there is a greater risk for the animal to become overweight.
Although it may not be possible to control all of the feline diabetes causes, cat owners can help reduce the chance of their pets from developing the disease by providing them with a healthy lifestyle including – among other things - a proper diet and regular exercise.

Different cat foods have been created especially for diabetic felines, but it is important that owners remember that just because a certain type of food is a good choice for one diabetic cat, it may not be ideal for another.

Since selecting the right food might not be the easiest process, a veterinarian can help in making diet suggestions. Furthermore, they may also be able to determine if there is another health condition, aside from feline diabetes, that might be affecting the animal. For instance, consider the following:

Cats that are overweight usually struggle to keep their blood sugar in a healthy range. In this case, a special weight-loss diet may be recommended.
Cats that have kidney disease, or that are prone to ketoacidosis (severe stage of diabetes where ketones accumulate in the blood), sometimes do better on a low-protein diet.
A cat with an inflamed pancreas (pancreatitis) may require a diet that is low in fat.

According to news, Swine flu virus is now spreading in more then 100 countries and about 345 people have died so far.
What is next? This is a horrible scenario, sooner or latter, this world will be facing a real chaos!

Influenza is again the interest matter for the world. Though world doesn't likes its existence but its reality of the day. Influenza is simply termed as 'Flu', with mild to severe upper respiratory tract signs.
In general, the influenza viruses exist in almost every specie which exist on this crust, but of human concerns are three strains. One which directly affects humans, while other two are of zoonotic importance. One from swine & other from poultry.
Drastic points of the influenza viruses are the mutation level, which is relatively high. This virus mutates rapidly, a protein of this virus is capable of swapping, means the protein coating may act as that of human, poultry of swines specially or individually.
More frightening view point is that of transmission, the human to human transmission will lead to almost the grave prognosis for its existence. Currently World Health Organization (WHO) has termed the swine flu as level 5 of 6 threat for this world, which means that at least two countries are facing the human to human transmission of this virus.
Level 6 will emerge as the conditions, where this disease will be delivered as pandemics. Simply a spread in through out world.
Figures shows that currently, almost 2.5 Billion humans are at risk, while 1.5 Billions are most vulnerable to the threat. It is estimated that millions of people would suffer death, if this disease is termed, pandemic.
Another aspect related to the public health is that of delivery of prophylaxis or prevention. Generally the viral infections doesn't follows the treatment plan economically, while the replication cycle for influenza virus is at least 7 days. On the other hand the availability of the vaccine will take another 6 months to be delivered in communities.
Let's hope for better, this issue is emerging as the more drastic threat then a world war!

HIV AIDS; Signs & Symptoms

In a lecture here at Hazara University, this was a matter of interest and worthy that HIV AIDS is supposed to be the most devastating disease oriented in recent years. This disease has three stages as far the clinical signs and symptoms are concerned.
These three stages are;

1. Acute Early Stage
In this particular stage different signs are being noticed. E.g. the patient exposed to the virus is felt as lethargy, sour throat, lymphoadenopathy, maculopapular rashes and leucopenia. It should be noticed that the important laboratory check for HIV AIDS i.e. cd4 receptor cells are use to appear normal in screening test. The conditions are resolved in a time frame of 1 - 2 weeks. Specific antibodies can only be screened after at least 3 weeks of exposure and the infected human produces more then 10 Billions of virions per day.
This stage persists not more then 2 weeks, while the second stage is long and most devastating.

2. Middle Latent Stage:
This stage is the prolonged stage and appears to be asymptomatic, means there exists no signs and symptoms, as the stage title shows, latent.
The virus replicates and gets accumulated in lymph nodes only. There are chances of severe viraemia in latter stage, i.e. presence of virus in blood.
The AIDs related complex or ARC can be detected in the lymphatic system, and in the latter stages, persistent fever, fatigue, lymph nodes adenopathy, and finally comes the final Late Immune Deficiency Stage.

3. Late Immune Deficiency Stage:
The first and most important sign of this stage is the lab screening for cd4 cells, which on screening appears to be less then 400 cubic per millimeter of sample blood.
There must be chances of secondary infections, which are termed as usually caused by the opportunistic micro organisms, such infections may include, Pneumonia, Sarcomas, encephalon apathies, thrush or Candida albium infection, crypto coccal infections, severe neurological disorders, Dementia or loss of memory, and different neuron apathies.
One of the most important secondary infections is that of tuberculosis.
It is estimated that more then 99.7 % of the HIV AIDs patients had an infection of Tuberculosis caused by Myco Bacterium Tuber coli. which shows that the patient in the latter stages of AIDS are fairy susceptible to the tuberculosis, and it is important to fairly screen each and every patient of Tuberculosis for HIV AIDS, but it doesn't mean that every patient of tuberculosis will be an HIV AIDs exposed personal. But there is a strong possibility that most of the HIV AIDs patients are more susceptible to Tuberculosis.
In 1992 there existed only two strains for the HIV AIDs viruses, but in recent years another new virus strain has been detected, which is yet to be discussed, researched and analyzed, making a new way to the research.

It was a sigh of relief some days ago that the party activists are not on the roads, and political masses are turning to be mature enough to make things possible in the lounge, not in the streets. Tahira Abdullah and many other activists like her were in a state of hibernation for this period of time. May be they people have had good times in those days, by raising voice over several social issues yet to be addressed.
But now, its time for some action, roads are blocked, politicial and civil masses are enjoying the time in streets, combating tear gas shells. Nation is shattered to it's best, the time is running out and many of us are making violent debates over the happenings, in the funerals, gatherings, bethiks, and in Hujras.
Infact its loss for us, loss for the nation, and loss for the democracy. But I am happy that we have made link to the date we ended with the democracy many years ago, we are on our real track. Pity on us.

What is the Problem?

Some says, it's judiciary. Others say it's terrorism, but I say it's attitude!

Pakistan was the state which was oriented on the map with the islamic ideology, you can say co related to the two nation theory or else. But what actually is the matter of problem we as a nation have been facing is ours attitude, our attitude towards legislation, democracy, development and every thing which matters.

The time today, is facing the same problem, Sharif's have a very aggresive attitude towards the Government, reason is even unkown to themselves, is it there's Punjab governement? is it there's intentions towards the Adovcates movement? or they really are aggressive because they love Pakistan!

I wish they get an oppurtunity now in the federal government and would come to know what exactly is there's attitude!

Policy makes higher education a waste!

A few days ago, in a post, "Higher Education, Isn't it a waste?", which stated the folks getting in to the trouble, while higher education commission gets in to severe crisis after a cutoff in the budget. In a response to this post, few of my friends quoted it as a rubbish, that how can be the higher education a waste for the country, what actually is the reason that the higher education seems a waste to me. I would suggest that I am also in confidence that in Pakistan, the policies followed are most of the dumb shit. e.g. when higher education is being debated today, who cares about the primary and the secondary education. Millions of Dollars are being spent for the scholarships and the research purposes, but the conditions of the standard in the government schools and even in the most of the privately operated schools is pity. I would quote the conditions of the working days in primary education, if is average, the primary schools are operating for only 72 days in a year academically. I don't know how can students of such systems can be a better option for the higher education.

One of my friend wrote here that, "I fully agree isn't it a waste., better to have more ministers and people have the status of minister rather than giving scholarships to deserving students", for that my brother, I would only say that I am also not in favor of having a clone of ministers roaming here and there, with nothing to do, just like same I am also not interested and would not like to see a clone of Ph.D's wandering here and there in this country, like many of other unemployed young graduates, where the research institutions, laboratories and universities have nothing to do any thing. I have witnessed many professors just practicing a campus politics and kitty parties, as they don't have any work to do, because the laboratories and research facilities doesn't exist. I am only saying that, "Isn't it a waste, that existing professionals are doing nothing, and suppose many are yet to come!"

Higher Education! Isn't it a waste?

A few years ago, it was a trend of the young graduates applying for the scholarships and enrolling them to the foreign universities, more and more students appearing in the NTS - National Testing Service quizzes for different scholarships; most of them for foreign universities, and least of them strengthening the universities of the country.

I don't know what would be the future of those vacuumed in foreign countries, now as the funds to HEC - Higher Education Commission are no more available.

But a question I must ask, whether the returning folks from the foreign countries have the facilities of research, labs, and opportunities for grooming their work over here. NUST - National University of Science and Technology has acquired acres of land for campus in Islamabad, has offered number of scholarships to the students in foreign countries, but I don't think would have strengthened the laboratories and research tombs they are decorating these days.

I am the one who has witnessed the PC - 1 of the boundary wall for a 20,000 acres of Gomal University, and the laboratories & libraries of the university seems ghost houses. Hazara University is offering more than 65 degrees in different disciplines, but many of departments lacks basic necessities to proceed with practical work of under graduates.

I don't know what the hell would those Ph.D's do, when they'll back here, most of them expecting a massive salary packages in universities, not the research & development work they were expected for. Who would offer them same, when HEC is on it's knees!

I have been roaming over web for quite some times, that if I can get an on line veterinary drug index for my personal reference. Unfortunately there isn't exist any of the reference of such kind, which can be helpful for the veterinarians.

Although I found some of the drug indexes, formulated for other countries, but the trade names of the drugs is the key for the reference for practicing veterinarians in an area.

So, for the convenience of the veterinarians, veterinary pharmacy owners, pet lovers and other concerns in Pakistan, I have decided to manipulate an on line copy of latest "Veterinary Drug Index" at my blog. Once it is completed, it would be Inshallah, published as a single file.

The terrible act!

''What's wrong with yours goats?'' I inquired from one of a local resident of village Dandai, in Thakot. ''I don't know, the goats remain ok in day, but when I waked up next morning half of them were dead and there was severe bleeding form the nose and mouth''. It was astonishing for me, I instantly decided to visit his place. My office is very kind in this regard, they immediately arranged transport for me, and when along with that man visited his place, I came to know about more cases similar to that I earlier heard.

In the diagnostic process I suspected it as, ''Caprine Anthrax'' which was latter confirmed by a laboratory report for the sample I submitted in Abbottabad. I was shocked with the presence of the disease in the area, which usually is not suspected in this belt. I further probed the matter, and out comings were terrible that the District Livestock Department had vaccinated the animals of the area few days ago with the caprine spore anthrax vaccine, say CSAV.

I don't know who was the culprit in the livestock department who did this, I mean which was the veterinary officer of locality who suggested such bull shit. We are already trying to eradicate common diseases from area, and they are injecting new diseases in the area by there own hands.

Brookes, A hope for Animals!

I along with my family and friends, was in shock. It was third (3rd) day of devastating earthquake 2005. It was really a hard time for my village Balakot. I when get spared from burying my loved ones on third day, I get on with the relief and medical operations being carried out there for the survivors. I get on to a volunteer job with a medical team of Chinese, who were roaming through the valley and treating the injured. I act as a translator and assisted them in different procedures, they were getting on with.
In the mean time during a visit to a far flung remote village of Tehsil Balakot, I met a team, who introduced them as BROOKE's Volunteers. I was familiar with the name, Brookes is an international organization working for the welfare of animals around the globe. I went on with them in conversation, for my surprise they were there to surprise the animals of area with different medical relief. Imagine the third day of tragedy, where humans were in huge shock, those folks were trying to manage the injuries of animals, along with other wing of same organization working for humanitarian aid.
In the whole relief operation, I only saw Brookes in the valley, working for animals, even the government owned livestock department managed to restore her's services after a month & a half.
One thing I must say, "Good Job Brookes!" and for animals, especially equines, "You are lucky that Brookes is here at this crust!"

Dairy Development In Pakistan (Part 1)

These days a term "White Revolution" is vastly murmured in different seminars, discussions, conferences & debates. Pakistan is considered as the third (3rd) largest milk producing in the country. Unfortunately most of the dairy products are being spoiled due to lack of marketing channel occurance. Only 3% of whole production makes it's way to market.
As a development worker, I get chance to roam through the rural communities of the country, where the most of Pakistan's population resides in the rural areas, so the impact of the development should be boosted in the rural communities preferably. The rural communities rears the milk producing animals in three different systems. i.e. animals reared only for family needs, animals reared for a nominal surplus production, and a commercialized rearing of milk producing animals. It should be noted that most of the communities rear animals, but are unaware of the market importance of their products. Also the communities are unaware of the potential.
Most of the projects designed now a days in livestock sector, mostly comprise of the component "Dairy Development" as major. In Punjab the Government is doing a remarkable job, by strengthening the linkages between all the stakeholders like, goverenment agencies, communities, and the private sector. but I have remained in NWFP.
NWFP has a diverse topography, where we have remote mountains to the southern and central plains, making two production systems, as far dairy production is concerned. One system is the southern & central plains production system, while other is northern highlands production system.
The capacity of production also comprise of these two systems, e.g. the plain areas are ready for ultimate production, and the breeds occuring in the region are high producing ones, and the facilities of veterinary services, if improved, a commercialized dairy production can be triggered. While on the other hand in the northern regions, still there is a need of improvement. If preferably some actions taken, as priority like
1. Nutrition
2. Veterinary Services
3. Improvement in local breeds
4. Capacity of rural communities
the production can be triggered on commercialized basis.

Veterinary Education in Pakistan

When I was admitted to the 5 years composite program of the degree entitled, ''Doctor of Veterinary Medicine'', The institution to which I was admitted was first to offer this 5 years program. It was then believed that the the market for the veterinary graduates seems to be saturated after a couple of years, so what the hell would these graduates pouring in to the market would do, it was interesting to know that hardly five (5) or six (6) institutions were there at that time, offering the similar degree, & then I graduated in year 2007.
At the time of my graduation more then 15 institutions were offering same degree & at least a couple of institutions were thinking over the program to inaugurate. Today, when ever I get chance to join the gatherings of veterinarians, they still debate the saturation of the market for veterinarians.
Other day, when finally I got the registration with the ''Pakistan Veterinary & Medical Council'' I came to know that I am No. 4292 registered veterinary practitioner in Pakistan.
That was shocking to know that how can it be so, is it the negligence of Government, that the veterinarians do not register themselves with the council, or is it the original figure of the veterinarians in Pakistan. If it's government then I can say that it's some thing routine in Pakistan, but if it is such the low number of veterinarians in Pakistan, then am surprised. I can imagine the potential of the veterinary science. I am talking about the country, which is considered as the third (3rd) largest milk producing country in the world. The country, whose second (2nd) largest industry is termed to be poultry industry. The country which homes the world's best ever breeds of the cow, i.e. Sahiwal & Red Sindhi. I am talking about the country which homes the best quality fish in world - the trout. and at last, I am talking about the country which is significantly contributing more than 11% of GDP, even though this one is highly neglected sector yet.
Who the hell says that the market for veterinarians is saturated. I believe that 4292 veterinarians up to December 2008 are more then less for such a blessed country.
and If some thing is saturated, that is not the market, but the minds of investors, policy makers & even the veterinarians of this beautiful & blessed country of ours.

Fazl Hameed; A miracle of Informal Education

I had an oppurtunity to formulate, arrange and proceed the informal training of the rural community activists in the northern areas of NWFP. One of the event we (project team) implemented was training interested community activists for ''Livestock Extension Workers''.

The criteria was simple and convinent, we had to choose right person for the right job. The participant must be interested and should be atleast a middle and should have a know how of the biology, information not knowledge. The most basic need of participation was that he should be vulnerable, poor and dependent & nominated by the rural community he belongs to.

Fazl Hameed is one of those 50 participants, who made through the channel and reached for a 7 days training at Mansehra. He belongs to Tehsil Allai, in District Batagram. He is married and has three children. He is poor, vulnerable and has nothing to do except roaming through the village all day. He didn't have enough resources, that he would have educated his children.

Then came a chance and he along with his community availed it. He made it to the training hall, by a procedure of selection, and the most interesting thing I noted was his willingness to change things happening.

Seven days course was just an oppurtunity to make a linkage and introduction, and then when he left after completion of that informal extension education, he along with other participants were awarded a certificate and a basic, first aid veterinary kit.

He pooled his resources through a short term loan and guidance of project team and the concerned veterinary officer of Tehsil, made a way by starting a veterinary medicine business initially providing only vaccination and de worming services, in summer 2007.

Next step was that of an advance course, which sharpened his skills and renewed and molded his skills he had been practicing for more than a year.

Advance course made a way for him and now he, with consultation of mine and the veterinary officer is providing services to a population of 25000 people who own atleast 12000 animals. (Rough estimate, as statistical data never been manipulated in Pakistan). His two children, both girls now go to school and his average income every month is more than Rs. 15,000.00

Fazl Hameed is one example of those 50 trained livestock extension workers. Others do play their role, but not all of them. Interest is always the first key to success!

Livestock Population In Pakistan

I had a wish few years ago, that if I can get the exact figure of the livestock population in Pakistan. My this wish and more than that the fate of the policies for planning and development in the sector remains a wish only, that we can get the exact, authentic and more than sufficient data for the planning of long term development plans with in livestock sector, which is currently contributing more than 11% of GDP. Livestock is now been recognised as the fate of Pakistan, but this fate can't be made a reality, as the policy makers are making the dumb policies with out any accurate and authentic statistical data of the population. The programs, baseline surveys etc are made on basis of ''Need of the Population'', & as far I think, it should be based upon the term ''Maximum we can get'', surplus production can be commercialised, can be profitable.
The most terrible part is the conditions of the Government Department, which seems nothing more than a spectator in policy making and the procedures and different project designings.

Avian Influenza

Avian Influenza is supposed as the most devastating issue of the current scenario, where the avian management is concerned, almost a couple of years back, in the month of May 2007, when I was at Veterinary Research Institute, Abbottabad as a volunteer during my studies. The team out there used to manage a unit of the ''National Avian Influenza Control Program''.
During my couple of month stay at the institute, I had a chance to participate in different conferences and sittings. One of them I remember, was that about the Avian Influenza - The Base and the reason of repeated occurrence in broiler flocks. The major issue was that, the reported cases in the first quarter of the year 2007, were majorly contained with the strain presence at a low profiled and light flocks of commercial broiler poultry.
Outcome of the discussion was rather horrible. It narrated that the companies occupying the Breeder Flocks of broiler use to vaccinate their huge flocks with the Avian Influenza vaccine, since 1997, and they never allowed to make a chance to share same with the government officials and institutions, also the most terrible thing was that they made it even more confidential by not advising the common poultry farmers about the issue. So in the race of profit & earning, breeder flocks owners made it a lie and common poultry farmer on the other hand didn't made the chance to vaccinate their flocks.
It made two results,
1. The virus since then has been in state of mutation, so it is more resistant then ever for the existing tackling technique.
2. Poor Government Policies have resulted in to a poor research outcome, which makes the issue more commercial, if a stake holder is making profit or earning from it now is the commercial sector of vaccines, vaccine is though don't have a competitive result.
What can be made further about the issue? that's important, but more important is that what would be the result of negligence regarding the issue we are facing, both from government and commercial sector?
Isn't it the health of large population of this country? It's a big Q. mark for us!

Hazara University, Mansehra

Today I was in Hazara University, where I am enrolled in the subject of Microbiology, for the degree, M. Phil Microbiology. It's my first semester there, where in this semester, we have,
1. Food Borne Diseases.
2. Pathological Virology.
3. Epidemiology.
4. Genomics & Proteonomics.

So I'll be hopefully combating these subjects in this semester, and will also include my experiences at the university also in this blog. am hopeful it would be more frequent that if i can make the posts being divided as the veterinary experiences and the academic experiences, so I'll label the sections for a better browsing for my self and the readers, if any :).

I am currently working with, Sarhad Rural Support Programme, This is an non profit, social organization operating in the North West Frontier Province, (NWFP) - Pakistan. It is focused on the poverty eradication and a self sustainable, communities of the rural areas. In fact is concept of the Rural Support Programme. The rural support programmes, like this is also in operation in the other provinces, and in region as in India and Bangladesh. Also the rural communities are encouraged for formation of village organizations, village banks, village saving through the community meetings, community organization, micro finance, community physical infrastructure, and improvements through the sustainability of the rural economy, through agriculture and livestock incentives. This is the place where I am rolling my reel of act. I am working as livestock officer, who comunicates with the rural communities, and provides different veterinary services and the different trainings, in formal schools as I disucssed in last post.
This blog will cover my role in the organization and my job description, of course my experiences, both of social and veterinary importance.

I am reviving this blog back to it's original concept, as it was retained to several other issues and spamming for a while,
Now I am working for a non profit organization after completing my studies, which is working for improving the livelihood capacities of the rural communities here in the northern areas of pakistan. so I'll be writing the concepts and day to day experiences of mine as veterinarian, who is providing the veterinary services and implementing different activities for the rural communities, as trainings of livestock and poultry management, dairy farming, sheep and goat management, vaccination and de worming campaigns, conducting different livestock farmer field schools, different advocacy tools and things like that.
More over I'll also be contributing different out door patient cases here which I use to treat during my free hours. I'll try to make the audio visual facilities also be posted here,
