Bespoke made GPS prototype shoes by Dominic Wilcox, Sept 2012.

It's great when design truly captures the imagination. And even greater (in our eyes) when it encompasses shoes too. Merge this with the implementation of the latest technology and you're bound to be left with something truly unique...

Dominic Wilcox has done just this. Combining GPS technology with beautiful craftsmanship, Wilcox has created a pair of shoes that will guide you home, regardless of where you are in the world.

This fully functional prototype is the result of a commission by Global Footprint, a Northamptonshire-based UK visual arts and living heritage programme, who approached Wilcox to design some shoes. Wilcox decided to "make a pair of shoes that can navigate you to anywhere you wish to travel to".

Drawing inspiration from the Wizard of Oz and how Dorothy could simply click her shoes together to take her home, Wilcox's form of wizardry utilises mapping software, GPS tracking and LED lights to get you going in the direction that you require.

In a nod to Dorothy's red shoes, the pair feature red calf leather lining and a red tag at the back (which is in fact a cleverly disguised GPS antenna positioned to point upwards).

How the shoes work:

Upload your required destination to the shoes via a custom made mapping software and a USB cable. The GPS (embedded in the heel) is then activated by a click of the heels.

The shoes communicate the route to the wearer via the LED lights on the toes.

The ring of lights, on the left shoe, point in the direction that is to be followed by illuminating one of the LEDs on the circle.

The GPS then wirelessly communicates with the right shoe to show how close the destination is through use of a progress bar of lights. The bar starts with one red light, and ends on a green light upon your arrival.

Paris and London Menswear Spring Collections Rundown

In the final part of our series on this season's catwalk trends we head to the fashion capitals of Paris and London for the last word on what we should be wearing on our feet this spring / summer.

There was great variety to be seen, and a welcome return of the lighter coloured shoe that eluded catwalks in Milan. We liked in particular the mix up of white and black leathers with a brown sole, as well as striking black shoes or boots with brightly coloured accents of red.

The other week Christopher McCallum - designer of Vein shoes - came across these colourful beauties from Floresheim by Duckie Brown. It got us here at Vein excited to see the use of colour so boldly used on a shoe and of course then we couldn't resist having a play around with our own customisable styles of men's shoes to see what great designs we could come up with too.

And here's the result of our hard day's work! The combination possibilities were endless; first selecting a base leather - options ranging from classic tan through to premium taupe-grey - then experimenting with that splash of colour to grace the top. Let's just say we found ourselves massively inspired to get colour back into our wardrobes after the winter months.

Milan Fashion Week Spring Collections

On the catwalks in New York we saw pale lace-up shoes dominate menswear, with the odd dark boot making an appearance in pleasant contrast. This was alongside the sitings of men's slides, smarter alternative to thongs in the summer months.

The trend for slide sandals continued through into Milan's spring / summer shows, where they were a regular occurrence on the catwalks. This time though, the designers branched out from the simple black styles seen in New York and played around more with shape and colour combinations. Black shoes in high sheen leathers were also popular, though not without meeting their summertime match of light coloured leather shoes in various textures.

But we were most excited to spy the classic monk strap making its mark as a strong contender for shoe of the season. A versatile design, this men's shoe style offers up a wide range of customisation options, making it suitable for a variety of occasions.
