It's been quite a while since VegasTodayAndTomorrow was updated. Well, the wait is over. Thanks to the many of you who have written over the last few months.

Although the building boom is over, many new projects are emerging and are in various stages of development as the economy slowly recovers.

Near-future site updates will include:
The D (formerly Fitzgerald's), Project LINQ (the giant wheel between the IP and the Flamingo), the remodeling and renaming of the Imperial Palace, the refurbishing of The Plaza, the new suites building at the Golden Gate, new venues in the Fremont East district, Zappo's repurposing the old City Hall, The Downtown Grand (formerly Lady Luck), SkyView (the other giant wheel), and other statistical, map, and cosmetic updates.

So, for today's updates:

I've freshened and tightened the home page, adding a scrollable text box to house the latest updates. Slowly phasing- out the updates page.

The Sahara is becoming SLS Las Vegas. See the renderings and article here.

The Marriott Grand Chateau is actually building the third of four towers. See the construction photos here.

I've also added a Facebook page for VegasTodayAndTomorrow. Please like and share it.

As promised, I went back to the cosmopolitan yesterday to get a second impression and took some interior photos.

Taking a look at the Cosmo's website yeasterday, I noticed a new slogan "We're Open, come act like you own the place". This philosophy suggests that no one will hassle you if you sit in a lounge to chill-out without ordering a drink. Or, hang out by the pool without a room key... we'll just see.

The pool deck was closed on my first visit as I did not venture up to that level until late-night - so I visited it first. I figured that I would be stopped by an employee who would inform me that the pool area was for guests only (like every other resort on the Strip), nope, although there were employees at the entrance, they were there to greet and answer questions.

The pool area was nice. The main pool was empty (winter), the huge shallow end was open for foot traffic and the deep end was covered with a surface and was open for foot traffic as well. There are two multi-leveled areas where one can kick back with a drink and enjoy a commanding view of the Strip. My favorite was the large square topiary rings with a contoured cushion, right up against the top of the ziggy-zaggy glass facade.

Other noteworthy features of the pol deck include a free game area. Two pool tables, foos-ball, ping-pong and bumber pool tables under a canopy near the second pool (this one had water). There was a large Jacuzzi near the bar and a restaurant as well. One word sums up the pool deck...Staycation.

I strolled through the meeting and banquet facilities and was amused by the whimsical art pieces reflecting their "just the right amount of wrong" philosophy.

I saw folks hanging-out (drinkless) in lounges (acting like they owned the place) hey, maybe this will work, A resort where everyone is respected and the normal rules don't apply...WOW!

<!--

If I needed to sum up my first impression of the Cosmopolitan with one word, it would be "WOW". This place is everything its behemoth neighbor to the south should have been. I've heard the Cosmo referred to as "CityCenter's rebellious little sister" and description fits her to a T (or tee, if you prefer).

My first "WOW" moment was the parking garage. The entrance is stunning. I drove by giant, back-lit chrome letters that spell out COSMOPOLITAN and passed a pristine lobby entrance. After descending down to the self-parking levels I noticed hundreds of red LED lights, each one fastened to a vertical rod protruding from the ceiling. According to the digital readout, the first level was full so I continued to the third level. Whoa, now the aforementioned LED lights were a mix of red and green. This wasn't an art installment but rather and indicator as to where the empty parking spaces were. I could see a group of green three rows away and headed straight for the empty spaces - Brilliant!!!. Examining this further, there is a small sonar device above each space the can sense the presence of a car. The walls of the garage are adorned with art by local graffiti artists.

Elevator up - Casino level

WOW again, this place has a pulse. Of course, the opening-night crowd did help with this impression, but still, there was a difference here. The decor was tasteful yet fun. There is a hint of whimsy here. This place does not take itself too seriously. The layout is great, the lounges are inviting and many. I was comfortable right away.

They scrapped the old interior plans which had a retail mall(ette) at the Strip entrance and moved slot machines right up to the windows. WOW, another great idea. I sat down at a machine, looked out at the Strip and played my customary opening night wager while watching people on the sidewalk outside - Nice.
This was a great strategy and the polar opposite of City Center whose passer-byers don't even know there's a casino in there (let alone how to get to it). This is the first Strip-front casino since the Flamingo and it's about time

There is also one lounge. Bond, that shares the front windows with the casino, The music can be heard from the sidewalk and will most likely draw a crowd every night.

In the middle of the front area is a huge chandelier-like installment which spans three stories and has over two million crystal beads. The interior of the chandelier houses three or four lounges. This is the stunning "must see" that folks will talk about. A cylindrical glass elevator ferries guests through the center to the levels above. Big "WOW" factor here.

The rest of the casino has lower ceilings and simple walls (very comfortable) the ceilings are adorned with more crystals and sheer material. Chuck from Vegas Tripping says the Cosmo is " The first casino resort targeted primarily towards women" and I have to agree. Especially after being served in the casino by a male cocktail waiter. huh? yup!

The second floor hosts various unique shops and meeting facilities.

The third floor hosts a variety of delectable restaurants with (again) very inviting and comfortable decor. There is also a chill area there with a pool table and foosball table...too cool.

I didn't explore any further and plan to take photos later today since I decided not to lug my camera around on a crowded opening night.

There have been reports of opening night debacles (mostly in the rooms division) as inexcusable as they may seem, unforeseen things do happen and I predict the Cosmo will be a raving success despite a few opening night faux pas.

<!--

The World Jewelry Center will get a new location within Symphony Park.

Since Symphony Park has direct access to freeways, this seems to be the best place for the Arena. putting it near the current City Hall would bring too much congestion to the downtown traffic (IMO), and putting it anywhere near or on The Las Vegas Strip would cause the worst gridlock this town has ever seen.

<!--

Well, this gets filed (firmly) in the rumor department.

According to a reliable inside source, there are rumblings behind the scenes at CityCenter that the foreshortened The Harmon Hotel may be the star of the next major implosion in Vegas.

As most of you know, there was a big 'oops concerning the re-bar in the tower that wasn't discovered until the tower was way too big to fix. My guess is that no insurance company on the planet will touch The Harmon. So, the rumor goes on to say that The Harmon will be replaced with a fitness center and a (much needed) grocery store ($18.00 Pop-Tarts, anyone?).
The old Hotels page had a truncated description of each project and a "More" button. A lot of folks ignored the "More" button and never saw the page for the projects in which they were interested. I feel this list-style is a no-brained approach. Also, it was one more page to edit. There are still phrases like "will be" for projects that were long ago completed. This fixes that issue as well.

There were some pending projects that didn't have a page of their own (thus, no "More"button). I created simple pages for them.
