Red Ginseng is typically grown in Korea or China. The name, Red Ginseng, is originated from the appearance of the root after undergoing a specialized preservation method. Like most Asian Ginseng, the red variant comes from Ginseng root that is grown, harvested and processed primarily in South Korea and China. The plant itself has bright green rounded leaves and produces greenish-yellow flowers that ripen into two or three small round red berries.

You’ve already heard so much about the harmful effects of sunburn or intensive sun exposure. It results in pre-mature aging and deadly skin cancer.

What is so exciting about the recent research on Red Ginseng is that the study reveals its emerging role as a photo protective agent.

A study was published in Journal Ethnopharmacology where the tests derived the effects of a Korean red ginseng extract in a group of hairless mice.

Hairless mice actually have very similar dermal structure to the human skin.

The experiment involved

• all the mice being exposed to UVB rays
• half the group received red ginseng extract on a daily basis
• other half received nothing

Red Ginseng Test Results

• The mice receiving daily red ginseng extract had fewer wrinkles as compared to the group with no red ginseng extract infusion.
• Blood analysis proves that red ginseng extract prevented “collagen degradation.”

In January 2009, another study also showed that “red ginseng prevented UVB related loss of elasticity, thickening of the skin and wrinkle formation in the same variety of hairless mice. Interestingly enough, applying ginseng directly to the skin appears to increase collagen production. This hints at a synergistic effect of taking ginseng orally and applying it topically.” - Science Direct - European Journal of Pharmacology

PubMed also mentioned that the topical application of red ginseng extract has also demonstrated an ability to prevent cellular changes that can ultimately lead to skin cancer.

A 22 week study in an animal model found that red ginseng “delayed tumor onset significantly”. The authors went on to say that, “red ginseng was also effective in reducing the UV radiation-induced skin tumors and reduced the number of tumors per mouse”.

Furthermore, red ginseng extract also has the ability to heal burn wound areas quite quickly.

Sunburn Symptoms

Nobody likes sunburns. It stings, your skin feels hot and it peels. Worst of all, it leaves lasting damage.

Sunburn is also similar to sun poisoning. In medical terms it’s known as photodermatitis which is a allergic reaction by your skin to overexposure to the sun. In the case of sun poisoning, however, the reaction is a bit more severe and the symptoms may become seriously uncomfortable.

With a typical sunburn, it usually involves itching, redness, and peeling. If your skin is badly burnt, you may even experience blisters that can lead to infections.

Treatment of Sunburn Skin

If the symptoms you encounter are mild, then treat your skin like any other sunburn. i.e. drink plenty of water to keep hydrated and your skin moisturized and hydrated. Also use an ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables to ease the swelling and itching.

Aloe is also an awesome ingredient to treat sun damaged skin. It relieves pain and inflammation. Avoid oils or anything that contains potential irritants. This includes exfoliants.

Aloe Treatment of Sun Damaged Skin

If you go to most Asian or Korean grocery stores, you can buy whole aloe leaves. Always better than buying aloe powder or extract.

• Purchase some leaves
• Refrigerate to chill
• Peel off the top layer with a knife to expose the Aloe flesh which looks like jelly or lychee
• Take long strip of aloe, much like how you would take a filet off a fish, and then apply it directly to your burn.
• When the aloe strip dries out, repeat.

If you prefer to use aloe vera juice, keep the sun damaged area moist with the aloe juice and repeat frequently.These methods should reduce the pain and the amount of peeling.

The most important thing to remember is to keep the sunburn area moist at all times whether the sun damage is mild or severe.

Sunburn Remedies

Aloe Vera Gel

As mentioned above, there is nothing better than aloe vera gel. It is antibacterial and deeply healing for burns in part because of aloectin B, which stimulates the immune system.

Vitamin E Cream

Vitamin E is a source of antioxidant which you can find in vitamin E creams, ointments and oils.

Increase Your Vitamin C

Another great source of antioxidants. Increase your vitamin C to help heal sunburned quicker.

Black Tea

Tannins contained black tea helps to sooth sunburn. Soak a black tea teabag and you can either use the tea bag itself or moisten a cloth and place it on the sunburnt area.

Baking Soda

Add 1/2 cup of baking soda to a warm bath or bucket of water and soak. Don’t dry the affected area with a towel. Let it air dry instead.

Why backing soda? It cools and helps the skin retain moisture.

Calendula Cream

Calendula is wonderful healing plant. The flowers are emollient, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antiviral. These plants are rich in carotenoids and immune system stimulants. You should be able to find Calendula creams at a health food or supplement store.

At any point, if you suffer from extreme pain or vomiting or if your fever grows too hot (over 104 degrees Fahrenheit), head to an emergency room.

Prevention with Sunscreen Wipes

Prevention from sunburn is always the best remedy. You don’t have to go through the pain, the hassle and the discomfort.

You also have to be aware of the effects of excessive exposure to the sun which leads to skin cancer, deep wrinkled skin, discoloration and pigmentation. Not a pretty sight is it?

One of the best preventive measure is to use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 that offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays. The use of sunscreen wipes will achieve all this.

If you do really desire a tan , try out tanning towels which match the tone of your skin. It doesn’t create a disgusting orange glow that screams self tanner. These sunless tanning towels are the most efficient, cleanest and safest way to a perfect tan.

It’s easy to have keratin (dead skin cells on outer layer of skin) if you have dry skin. You have dry skin because your skin lacks the secretion of sebum.

Performing skin care for dry skin is harder than other skin types because your skin is sensitive and you want to keep the irritation to a minimum.

Something to keep in mind is that you don’t want to exfoliate extensively. This will only cause your skin to become drier. A better method for cleansing is to use a cleansing cream or foam.

Since it is common for dry skin to lack both moisture and oil, you should strive to keep a skin balance in order to prevent your skin from drying out further, especially during the colder seasons.

Dry Skin Care Tips

1. Facial massages using the best facial sheet mask that provide sufficient moisture to your skin. Recommended use of 3 times per week.
2. Use exfoliating products only once a week. Gently massage while applying.

Oily Skin

All this sweat and sebum accumulates waste in your pores and is further worsened by the keratin trapping those impurities inside your pores. A simple cleansing doesn’t even work in this situation. You have to first exfoliate to remove that barrier of dead skin and then cleanse.

It’s also very important to care for your pores using oil free cleansing products, foam cleanser and effective exfoliating products to remove keratin.

Use a steamed towel to cover your face in order to open up the pores. Then, apply exfoliating products to remove wastes blocking your pores. Carefully manage around the T-zone area where larger pores exist and even more excessive sebum secretion occurs. Make sure to avoid accumulation of thick keratin around the area.

But let’s say you splash on some sunscreen lotion and rub it in sparsely. A majority of people still do not use the recommended amount, let alone frequency. This is where sunscreen towelettes are so convenient and handy.

Vitamin D

The sun is also a great source of Vitamin D but many people lack the appropriate levels of vitamin D to maintain a healthy balance.

The average should be between 32-100mg and you can check by getting a blood test or during a physical exam. Mine came out to be 14mg. Drastically under the required amount. Also found out that a low vitamin D count may cause depression and tiredness.

Prolonged exposure to the sun also causes a change in the skin texture including a thicker skin with coarse wrinkles (especially on the back of the neck) or thinning of the skin causing fine wrinkles, easy bruising and skin tearing, particularly on the forearms and back of the hands.

In order to protect your skin from the possible sun damage, it is very important to apply enough sunscreen.

There are various types of sunscreen products available on the market including sunscreen lotion, powder and sunscreen towelettes.

The type of sunscreen product used isn’t as important as how well you use it to protect yourself from UV rays.

1. Sunscreen Lotion

Advantages:

• Sunscreen lotion products are the most readily available
• Lots of variety and SPF choices

Disadvantages:

• Messy, greasy, sticky
• Uncomfortable with clothing
• Need to use a large amount for full body protection
• Can make you look like a ghost

2. Sunscreen Powder

Advantages:

• Can reapply on makeup during the day and won’t mess it up
• Easy to apply
• No greasiness or stickiness

Disadvantages:

• Only meant for the face
• Impractical as a sun protection product
• Very expensive
• Product contains a small amount

3. Sunscreen Wipes and Towelettes

Advantages:

• Convenient. Can carry anywhere.
• Goes on clear and clean. No grease. No stickiness.
• Moisturizes the skin
• Just wipe on to be protected
• Can finally apply sunscreen on energetic children instantly

Disadvantages:

Variety of Facial Masks

Facial mask sheets are awesome because it helps to remove dry skin from your face and impurities as well as providing moisture and nutrition to revitalize your skin. Just recently we had an excellent review of our Faifia green tea sheet mask by fellow blogger at Bringing Out the Beauty.

On the market today, there are several types of facial masks available

• rinse off facial masks
• peel off facial masks
• facial masks in sheet form with a high concentration of essence

Directions of use differ for each type of facial mask product but there are a few common principles to keep in mind prior to and after applying face masks in order to maximize the benefits of the face mask.

Facial Mask Frequency

Facial masks are skin care products that provide nutrition to the skin.

Regarding the mask sheet type of facial mask, the sachet contains a high concentration of ingredients and essence. So, using the sheet mask or any mask for that matter, too frequently could irritate the skin. Mask sheets are very affordable but it doesn’t mean you should just use one everyday.

The frequency of facial mask application should be around every 2nd or 3rd day.

Prior to Applying Facial Sheet Mask

• Double cleanse well. Even if you don’t put on make up, your facial skin is still exposed to the dirt and pollution in the air which will only fill your pores.
• Good idea to open the pores so that when you apply the facial mask, all the nutrition is immediately absorbed into your face. Cover your face with a steamy towel or soak your face with warm water and chamomile tea bag.
• Follow the directions. Apply a face mask sheet for the duration suggested in the directions.

• If you use mud facial masks, apply an even layer on your face, avoiding sensitive areas such as eyes and mouth.

After Applying the Facial Mask Sheet

You can soothe and maintain your moist and nourished skin by applying plenty of moisturizing cream or lotion. If you used a sheet type facial mask, you can just pat your face with the remaining essence on your face.

Homemade face masks are great because it feeds your skin nutrition and the richness of the fresh ingredients leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth. Skin care products that offer the same level of effect are so expensive that regular treatments on your skin will likely burn a hole in your wallet.

For Normal Skin

This is a great mask pack for normal skin and should leave your face looking brighter and more radiant.

• Mixing clay or white kaolin powder along with cornflower, oats and one beaten egg white
• Add a drop of geranium oil into the mix
• Mix well to form a paste
• Apply on your face and leave on for 10 minutes before washing off

For Dry Skin

Provide moisture and nutrition to dry skin with fruit. Fruits that are rich in water and vitamins make for good face masks.

Fruit mask recipes are very simple to make, smell and tastes great

• Get any fruit that isn’t overflowing with juice. e.g. Don’t just use oranges, lemons or watermelon. Papaya, peach, strawberry, nectarine, pear and melons are great ingredients.
• Mash up the fruit
• Add some honey. Honey is a great antioxidant which is a requirement to achieve younger looking skin.
• Apply and leave on for 15 minutes
• Use the following cleansing technique for dry skin

Avocado and bananas also make for an awesome homemade facial mask.

For Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, apples and honey work like a treat.

• Peel two apples and remove the core
• Get one tablespoon of honey and mash together. It easier if you cut the apple up into small pieces before making it into a paste.
• Apply and leave on for 20 minutes.
• Use the same facial cleansing method for oily skin.

For Wrinkled Skin

Wrinkles will make you look older. Almonds should help as it is loaded with Vitamin E which has anti aging effects.

• Soak almonds in milk overnight
• While adding a little more milk, grind it into a paste
• Apply and leave on for 15 minutes
• The almonds will help to fight aging skin and the milk will include a cleansing effect

For Enlarged Pores

A homemade facial mask found against enlarged pores. Also

• Squeeze orange and lemon juice together
• Get a brush or a cotton pad or gauze, dip it into the juice and apply gently onto your face.

Don’t forget to follow the 5 methods to reduce pores.

For Dark Circles Under Eyes

Dark circles make you look tired and unhealthy.

To reduce dark circles, you can use a green tea bag for dark circles or cucumber juice for this condition.

• Soak green tea bags in hot water
• Take out the tea bag and let it cool
• Place it on the dark circle areas under your eyes

In case you aren’t sure of the content, it is essentially a specially made cotton mask soaked in nutrients and essence which you just unfold and place on your face. These types of masks are absolutely HUGE sellers in Asia but just not in the US and other western nations.

We are trying to change that.

Coming Soon.. Self Tan Towels

We won’t be selling tan towels right away but they are on their way. Here is some info for those of you who are interested.

The desire to personally buy tan towelettes came whenever I was always burnt after a day out in the sun. I have very fair skin and direct exposure to UV rays means red sore and flaky skin. I could never get a tan.

But with self tanning towels I could get a perfectly natural tan. The best thing about tanning towelettes is that they contain no dye or colors so you won’t be left feeling sticky and orange. You get a perfect shade of bronze for your skin.

Other places offer sunless tanning towelettes that come in 10 per box but then I end up using at least 3 to cover my entire body. With the tan towels that we offer, we offer it in either 15 sheets per packet or a box of 30 towelettes at a cheaper price.

We have two brands that you can choose from which will provide excellent natural sunless tans.
