The Chinese carved bronze password padlock has five rotating discs made of bronze with four Chinese characters on each disc as follows:

“锄禾日当午，汗滴禾下土 。谁知盘中餐，粒粒皆辛苦。

Each line is part of a poem written 1400 years ago about Peasants working in the rice fields and each grain of rice is precious. The title of the poem is “A Hard-Working Farmer” Li Shen (772-846 AD)

Farmers weeding at noon,
Sweat down the field soon.
Who knows food on a tray
Due to their tolling day?

(*Note: Close Translation but I don’t speak Mandarin)

You can turn the discs easily, but if you want to open this lock you have to rotate the characters “锄禾日当午” in a line. Not a lock to secure your belonging because it is a very popular Chinese Poem. Easy to open even if you don’t know Chinese.

Both side of the lock are jointed with a carved head of lion. The padlock is made of Bronze, an alloy, made of red copper, tin and lead.

The most common decorations on padlocks was animals from the Chinese Zodiac , such as tiger, dragon, deer, sheep, ox, etc. In Western Zhou dynasty, dragon symbol for the mens locks and phoenix for women locks were mostly used. I have a large collection of Antique Locks, Padlocks, Keys, lock picks and Handcuffs so I will make a few more Blogs and video about them. Send me any pics of old locks, keys and handcuffs mrprolock@gmail.com

Locked out? Need Keys? Keys locked in your car? or worst, keys locked in the trunk?

When I passed my drivers license (one day after I turned 16yrs old) and I could now, after school and weekends, do emergency mobile locksmith service. My favorite locksmith job was “keys locked in car.” I could open any car with a homemade long piece of banding steel (later I bought a “Slim Jim”) and a coat hanger with a Sheperd’s hook bent on one end. I later updated my coat hanger to a chrome coat hanger (people got upset when I just used a plain coat hanger).

I could open any car in less than 60 seconds. Today with modern cars with anti-theft devices, air bags in the door, pick resistant locks I have a large car opening kit filled with air wedges, long reach tools that glow in the dark, bendable tools with hooks and lasso and a computer program to help me open the harder cars. Also, I have specialized lock picks to open pick resistant locks (BMW, Lexus, etc.).

Note: Tennis balls blowing air into the keyhole will not open any car (fun stunt on Youtube).

The top ten list identifying the Fraudulent and Unlicensed Locksmiths was developed jointly by the BBB, BC Consumer Protection and the BC Crime Prevention Association.

BBB ”Consumers reported “local locksmiths” advertising online using a local telephone number and local address, but when contacted, consumers are connected to a call centre in another city.

Consumers who have hired these companies allege they have been overcharged for products and services, received bad advice or poor workmanship, or have had difficulty contacting the business to correct problems.

BBB stated “Fraudulent locksmiths: Florida-based locksmiths posing as local firms have been overcharging for poor workmanship and bad advice and have left consumers with no avenue for redress. Locksmith Master and Locksmith Pros are two operating locally.”

Read more: http://www.theprovince.com/news/unveils+scams+2011/5946976/story.html#ixzz1ieL8GYyy

AVOID FRAUD, DON’T BE A VICTIM: Don’t just pick the first “local” company you find online. Most of the Google “Paid Ads” are unlicensed locksmiths. Confirm the company address and ask for the legal name of the business. When the locksmith arrives, ask for identification, a business card and their BC Security Employee license. All reputable companies will take Visa or MasterCard if they insist on cash only beware.

I was contacted by a lady yesterday who said she was a victim of a Unlicensed Locksmith company she found on Google Ad Words in Downtown Vancouver who wanted to charge her over $300 to replace a mailbox lock she had lost the keys to. She paid the two “scuffy looking men” $160 cash and still has no keys to her mailbox.

Note: We charge only $95 + HST (8am to 8pm / 7 days) to pick open and replace the mailbox lock and we supply 2-3 keys.

We are a family run BC Licensed Locksmith Company (B4227) and is a 24 Hr. Emergency Mobile locksmith specializing in lock rekeys, lock outs, high security deadbolt installation and are experts in picking locks (except UL Listed Pick Resistant Locks eg Schlage Primus, Medeco, ASSA). Also, visit our locksmith store at SFU Harbour Centre at 555 W Hastings. (Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm).

Next Week: What is the BC Security Agency who license locksmiths doing about the rash of unlicensed locksmiths operating daily in Downtown Vancouver, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland?

This morning I had another person call me about being a victim of an unlicensed locksmith in Vancouver. He had searched for “Locksmith Vancouver” on Google. He contacted the top three locksmith companies on Google Ad Words and one of these companies visited his home and rekeyed his lock and charged him over $500.00 and he paid cash.

Note: Mr. Locksmith charges $95.00 to rekey 1-2 locks and our customers get 5 free keys.

He now has been calling the company he had contacted and they refuse to talk to him. He called me and asked me what he can do.

Lots of Unlicensed Locksmiths in the Vancouver Area and other Cities in North America. He could have visited the BC Government website.

“Verify Locksmith Security Business licence” at the following BC Government site:

http://www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/securityindustry/training/index.htm

He could also write a letter to Registrar, Security Services ( http://www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/securityindustry)

When you Google “Locksmith Vancouver” the top three listings on Google Ad Words are unlicensed locksmiths. It is difficult for legitimate locksmiths to pay the Google Ad Word rates to be listed on the top of Google Ad Words. At Mr. Locksmith all of our locksmith have had Criminal records checks, have BC Government issued locksmith employee licenses and Mr. Locksmith had paid the fees to have a BC Government issued company locksmith license and Mr. Locksmith has the required liability insurance required by the BC Government.

The business model for the unlicensed locksmiths on Google Ad Words is to target emergency lock outs, quote low and then charge hundreds of dollars for simple jobs. Also, the unlicensed locksmiths will drill the lock or door because they don’t have the skills or training to pick the lock. I was called out to a car lockout where the un licensed locksmith tired to drill a car door open.

In the Province of British Columbia Locksmiths and Locksmith companies are required by law to have a British Columbia Provincial Locksmith License and have a minimum of two (2) years locksmith training and supervision under a licensed locksmith. The BC Locksmith License requires a security check and clearance and includes a fingerprint check at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) or local Police Department. In British Columbia the Industry Training Authority (ITA) is responsible for apprentice locksmiths and certification as a qualified locksmith. The ITA verifies the locksmith has a minimum of two (2) years training under the supervision of BC Licensed and Qualified Locksmith,

However, the lack of a BC Locksmith License and criminal records check and security clearance has not deterred unlicensed locksmiths operating in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland,

Many of these unlicensed locksmith companies operating in Vancouver are based in Vancouver and the US. In the summer of 2010 the BC Government revoked a person in Vancouver who had a security guard license and was and was operating as an unliceded locksmith and he is still operating as an unlicensed locksmith in Vancouver. Also, this unlicensed locksmith and unlicensed locksmith company is advertising on Google Ad Words and is at the top of Google Ad Words.

I spoke with a representative from the Solicitor General office about the unlicensed locksmiths and this particular person and unlicensed company and he basically admitted they do not have the money or time to pursue unlicensed locksmiths and unlicensed locksmith companies operating openly in British Columbia. I will try to interview someone from their office for an “official response.”

I will report in a future Blog what the BC Government is doing about unlicensed locksmiths and Googles response to BC Unlicensed locksmiths advertising on Google Ad words.

In my opinion the only way to for people to people to get any satisfaction is to Fight the Unlicensed Locksmiths the only place they get business.

On Google Ad Words:

1- Google “Locksmith Vancouver” or “Locksmith” or “Locksmith Richmond” etc,
2- Click on the top three locksmiths at the top of the page.
3- Go to the unlicensed locksmith website and click on a few pages.

*** You just cost the unlicensed Mobile Locksmith $2-$5 each time you visit.

FIGHT BACK, THE UNLICENSED LOCKSMITHS USE GOOGLE AD WORDS TO ADVERTISE

Fight the Unlicensed Locksmiths Google “Locksmith Vancouver” and click on Unlicensed Vancouver Mobile Locksmith. Go to the unlicensed locksmith website and click on a few pages.

The Top 100 Key Blanks for Commercial and Residential Key blanks from Ilco / Kaba a key blank manufacturer they sell to locksmiths and key stores. Most popular key blanks a locksmith cuts or duplicates will vary by Region and location within a City. In Canada the most popular key blank duplicated is the Weiser “W1″ and the Schlage “SC1″ key blanks. I had a locksmith shop next to several large office buildings and the most Popular key I cut was the Sargent “LA.” The most popular key at my newest locksmith shop and key store in Downtown Vancouver, BC is the Schlage 6 pin “SC4″ and Best Keys.

In future Blogs I will discuss key blank identification, key blank selection for your key store and locksmith shop, locations and suppliers of to purchase key blanks. Also, I will talk about Imported locks or “Off Shore” manufactured keys and locks and the problems duplicating keys for these North American clones.

Also, the major problem is shoe repair and corner stores cutting keys. To save money they cut keys on Master key blanks, rather than stocking the various keyways in a particule brand of lock they only stock and cut the ‘Master’ blank. An example is Schlage locks key blank series (C, CE, E, EF, F, FG …). The inexperienced key cutters just stock the Schlage ‘L” blank which is the Master for all the keyways and cut all Schlage on the Master “L” Key blank. On a large office building with multiple floors and offices the master key system has now been comprised. More of this in later Blogs. When I see the amount of master key blanks in the top 100 keys and how many of these keys customers bring to our Mr. Locksmith Key Store in SFU Harbour Centre Mall at 555 W Hastings Street Vancouver BC (Downtown Vancouver) I try to point out how their master key system and building security has been comprised.

In a future Blog I will discuss the solution to unauthorized key duplication.

In the United States and Canada various Locksmith organizations and businesses having been calling for regulations for training and criminal records checks for anyone in the Locksmith business. In British Columbia Canada Locksmiths are in theory regulated by the BC Government. Locksmiths in BC must have a minimum of two years working under the supervision of a Licensed Locksmith. After two years the Apprentice Locksmith can apply to the Industry Training Authority (ITA) to receive their “Trade Qualification” (TQ). Locksmith Businesses must have a Locksmith with a TQ, minimum 1 Million dollars liability insurance and a Locksmith Business license issued by the BC Government. All locksmith employees must have a “Locksmith Employee License” or a “Locksmith Employee License Under Supervision.” The Locksmith must be fingerprinted by the local police and a criminal records check is conducted by the BC Government before a Locksmith License is issued. The BC Government and the ITA have a list of regulations and requirements and the Government, in theory, can hand out heavy fines for non-compliance.

However, in BC we have no shortage of unlicensed locksmiths and the plague of the ‘Locksmith Scammers” operating across North America. Most of the Google paid ads (adsense) are the unlicensed locksmiths promoting to open your car or house for $15.00. I don’t know about you but I can not start my Locksmith Van and drive down the street for $15.00 (price of gas, insurance, car payments, repairs, etc.). The unlicensed and scammer locksmiths are operating in the open and in defiance of the locksmith regulations. BC has had locksmith licensing in place for over 25 years and appears to be losing the battle to regulate the Locksmith industry.

I support the BC Government trying to regulate the Locksmith Industry and the ITA finally has a workable Locksmith Apprentice training requirements. Between the two groups they have the ability, finally after 25 years, to have a positive impact on the Locksmith Industry. Also, the ITA training standards combined with Government Licensing and Criminal Records checks should be used as the standard for other States and Provinces trying to regulate Locksmiths, Apprentice Locksmiths and Locksmith Business.

However, any Province or State has to look at the failure to regulate or fine unlicensed Locksmiths and Locksmith companies. Legitimate Locksmith Companies pay hundreds if not thousands of dollars to comply with the regulations and compete with unlicensed, untrained and scammer companies every hour of the day. If enforcement or the Government rules and regulations is haphazard, inconsistent or non-existent then you will have the same situation in British Columbia, Canada nice looking and well drafted rules and regulations and nice well thought out Apprenticeship and training standards and little or no enforcement of these rules and regulations.

In conclusion, I look forward to comments.

Thanks

In Vancouver, British Columbia Canada, I have scheduled several 5 days locksmith Classes for November and December. The hands-on comprehensive knowledge about locking and unlocking principles, security issues, and effective use of cutting-edge products. Each student will cut over 100+ keys per students (by code and manual key machines) and rekey, shim, pick open, take apart (and put back together) lots of locks (deadbolts and key in knobs). Also, lock-outs, broken keys and picking locks.

Each student will design a mini Master key system and master key their locks. This is a hands on locksmith training class, no watching movies, you will learn hands on, you do the work. This is not a correspondence course. You will learn to pick locks the starting the first day. The first hour you will cut a key on a computerized key code machine and before noon you will be rekeying locks and cutting keys.

The Locksmithing Class is $1500.00 and includes all supplies, lock picks, tools and material needed to take the course with. The locksmith class is designed to teach engineering or maintenance employees for large facilities (School, Hospital, Corrections, Policing, etc.) and is a good start for beginners. The Five Day Institutional Locksmithing Class is available onsite with a minimum of four (4) students. Call or e-mail to arrange a class or for next course dates.

Note: All students in Canada must pass a criminal records check. (except Police, Hospital or School employees).

Vancouver BC 5 Day Locksmith Class Nov. 14-18, 2011
Vancouver BC Saturday Only Locksmith Class starting November 19th, 2011

Also, for the hands-on lock picking course I have incorporated methods from my new Lock Picking book “Penetration Expert: How to pick locks like a Professional Locksmith” . All locksmith students get a free copy “Penetration Expert: How to pick locks like a Professional Locksmith” and the book will soon be available at Amazon.com.
