EEDAR today released its October 2009 sales results, and it's not
looking good for the first month of the traditionally strong Q4
shopping season. According to EEDAR's estimates for October, game
revenue is down 11% year over year, while hardware sales are down 10%.

The lone bright point for hardware will be the PS3, which enjoyed
an increase, although the Wii still sold more units than the PS3 or
Xbox 360.

On the hardware front, home console sales are expected to
decrease by 10% over last year for the month of October, with all
platforms except the PlayStation 3 posting year-over-year declines.
It's worth noting, however, that even though the Wii will report fewer
sales than last year, it still sold more units than any other console
in October.

Software sales for October 2009 will come in at $620 million,
an 11% decrease over last year. However, unit sales are only down by
6%, so the overall revenue decrease is expected to be the result of
lower average selling prices.

Additionally, EEDAR predicted that the New Super Mario Bros.
for the Nintendo Wii will be one of the top titles this holiday season.
While in the short-term the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: Modern
Warfare 2 may surpass New Super Mario Bros, in the long-term New Super
Mario Bros will easily become the best selling title released in 2009
with expected lifetime sales exceeding 15 million units worldwide.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is expected to be the top-selling
game for the month of October 2009, with more than 600,000 units sold.
If sales trends continue through the holidays, Uncharted 2: Among
Thieves will only be the third first-party title on the PlayStation 3
to sell over 1 million units domestically.

In light of the economy this seems fine, until you consider EEDAR's projection that all platforms except the Nintendo Wii and Sony PSP will post year-over-year gains. In other words, the declining sales of those two systems alone are so drastic that it overshadows all the positive news on the other fronts.

Nintendo Wii sales are expected to be down 45.41 percent year-over-year, from 687K units sold last year to 375K units this year. Compare this to the PlayStation 3 (PS3), which is expected to increase 72.41 percent year-over-year (400K units, up from 232K) and be the top-selling console for the month -- the first time since the system's launch in November 2006 that it's led the way. The PSP, meanwhile, will see a sales decrease of 20 percent.

Software is a different story, with overall sales favorable at $715 million, or 16 percent higher than the same period in 2008. This was led, of course, by Halo 3: ODST, The Beatles: Rock Band, Guitar Hero 5 and Wii Sports Resort.

What happens in October and through the end of Q4 is still fuzzy, with all three consoles now having a price drop and consumers finally appearing to have regained some confidence in the market. However, with Nintendo Wii sales so slow in September, it begs the question: did Nintendo drop the price of its Wii to "keep up with the Joneses," or did it do so to stop the bleeding of its downward trend?
