Preserved Lands Exhibit to Open at York Art Association

The York Art Association and the Farm & Natural Lands Trust of York County present Preserved Lands: An Exhibition of Paintings of York County’s Preserved Lands” in the Nancy M. Woodward Gallery at York Art Association, 220 South Marshall Street, York, PA.

The exhibition opens this Sunday, April 1, 2012 with a reception from 2PM to 4PM and will continue through Sunday, April 22, 2012. Gallery hours at the York Art Association are Sundays from 2PM to 4PM and Monday through Friday from 9AM to 3PM.

Thirty noted regional landscape painters were invited to participate in this joint project developed by York Art Association Gallery Committee member Linda Sommer and the Farm & Natural Lands Trust (FNLT) Executive Director Sean Kenny. Each artist was paired with a landowner of a property protected by FNLT. The participating artists are:

On Sunday, April 15,2012, Dr. Pam Hemzik, Associate Professor of Art, York College will present a lecture “Landscape as a Metaphor: A Look at How Artists Have Imagined the Landscape” at 2PM.

On Sunday, April 22, 2012, Sean Kenny, Executive Director at FNLT will give a talk “History and Mission of the Farm & Natural Lands Trust of York County” at 2PM.

The Exhibit also features a raffle drawing for “The Howard Tunnel” painting by artist Marion K. Stephenson (pictured above). Raffle tickets are $5.00 each or 5 for $20.00 and may be purchased befroe and during the exhibition through both organizations. All proceeds will benefit both non-profits in their ongoing missions. The drawing will be held on Sunday, April 22 at 3PM following Sean Kenny’s talk.

And last but not least, Shawn and I are showing in the Sally Little Danyo Members’ Sales Gallery in conjunction with the exhibit. Shawn is showing a series of small works – Rockscapes – from a year long daily meditation project related to lessons in the book A Course in Miracles while I am showing a selection of works from my Susquehanna Simpatico Limited Editions Collection.

“Rivertowne Botanical” Exhibit to open February 24

On February 2nd on Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, Phil the groundhog was summoned from his burrow to gaze upon the crowd gathered for the auspicious occasion. Upon seeing the many shadows cast by his faithful followers, Punxsutawney Phil, the “Seer of Seers, the Prognosticator of all Prognosticators” declared that there must be six more weeks of winter.

Not so, say I.

On Friday, February 24, the art galleries of Columbia, Pennsylvania celebrate their monthly “Fourth Fridays” and SPRING & SUMMER are coming, well in advance of Punxsutawney Phil’s perspicuous prognostication – phew.

“Rivertowne Botanical,” featuring a selection of my fine art floral, botanical, and landscape images will be on exhibit at Jonal Gallery, 653 Locust Street (between 6th and 7th Streets, across the street from Mt. Bethel Cemetery), Columbia, Pennsylvania 17512 from 5PM to 9PM.

The exhibit runs from February 24 through March 18, Saturdays from 10AM to 5PM and Sundays from 12PM to 5PM. Additionally, on Thursday, March 8, I will be doing a “Night at the Gallery” presentation / discussion from 7PM to 9PM. York Art Association Announces Rottler Awards

The Opening Reception for the York Art Association’s Rottler Award Selection Exhibit was held on Sunday, June 19, 2011. The exhibit features two works by each of 42 members.

The selection Juror was Amy S. Hammond, Exhibitions Manager/Preparator at the Susquehanna Art Museum. Ms. Hammond has also curated exhibitions for the Handprint Identity Project at Elizabethtown College and for the DOSHI Gallery of Contemporary Art at The State Museum of Pennsylvania.

The exhibit guide offers a brief history of the Rottler Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts:

“The Rottler award for Excellence in the Visual Arts is made possible throught a bequest to the York Art Association by the late E. Kurt Rottler, a devoted member and President of the Board of Directors from 1965 through 1970.

The Rottler fund provides a $300 prize to each of the five winners of this prestigious members-only exhibit and funds awards for other shows throughout the year. The fund also supports awards to York College of Pennsylvania art students and inner-city art programs run by Yorkarts.

The Rottler endowment is the perfect example of the power of a bequest to guarantee the future success and growth of our association in particular and the visual arts in general. Thanks to the bequest by E. Kurt Rottler, the York Art Association has been able to award almost $100,000 for excellence in the visual arts.

Thank you to all of the artists who submitted the outstanding entries for this exhibit, and congratulations to our five winners of the Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts. We look forward to their group exhibit in 2011.”

Rottler Award Selection Exhibit at York Art Association

Each year, the York Art Association selects up to 5 artists to receive the Rottler Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts from those members submitting work to the selection exhibition . The 2011 Rottler Award Selection Exhibit features two works by each of 42 York Art Association members.

The award is in honor of the late E. Kurt Rottler (1929-1995), a long time member of the York Art Association (YAA). Upon his passing in 1995, the YAA received an endowment from his estate to fund exhibition awards throughout each exhibition season. The Rottler Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts recipients are each awarded a $300 honorarium and given a group exhibition in the year following their selection. The Rottler Award winners’ exhibition is held annually in March/April.

This year’s Rottler Award recipients will be selected by Amy Hammond, Exhibitions Manager, Susquehanna Art Museum. Ms. Hammond holds a BA in art history and museum studies from Juniata College and a MA in art history (with a Modern European Art concentration) from American University in Washington, DC. During her time in Washington, DC, Amy Hammond interned with the Smithsonian Institution at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

The exhibit opening reception is Sunday, June 19, 2011 from 2 PM to 4 PM and the exhibit continues through Sunday, July 10, 2011.

The York Art Association Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM and Sundays from 2 PM to 4 PM (closed Saturdays) at 220 South Marshall Street, York, PA 17402.

Dean Graham to exhibit Photography and 3D Works at Jonal Gallery

‎”Automotive Memories by Dean” opening at Jonal Gallery (653 Locust Street, Columbia, PA ~ across from Mt. Bethel Cemetery between 6th & 7th Streets) on Saturday, June 18, 2011. The gallery is open from 12 PM to 9 PM with the Opening Reception from 5 PM to 9PM. Saturday is also the 7th Annual Cruisin’Columbia Car Show, a perfect match to Dean’s photography. Dean will also be showcasing some of his 3D creations including a “Love Seat” fashioned out of the rear end of a ‘65 Mustang!

The exhibit continues through July 10, 2011 ~ 10 AM to 5 PM Saturdays and 12 PM to 5 PM Sundays. “Susquehanna Simpatico” debuts at Jonal Gallery, Columbia, PA

I am exceedingly elated to announce my very first solo exhibition. Susquehanna Simpatico is a collection of images that are both an exploration of and a meditation on the life of and on the Susquehanna River in and around Wrightsville, Pennsylvania.

Water covers nearly 71% of the Earth’s surface and the human body is approximately 60% water. Water is essential for all known forms of life. It is one of the four classical elements and is widely regarded as the basic substance of the universe. It is a symbol of purification in literature and in most religions. Water is indeed the life’s blood of the Earth. It purifies and sustains. It is timeless and eternal and it connects all things in the cycle of life.

I have printed all of the images on canvas, stretched them on 3/4″ stretcher bars (back stapled) and finished them with hand crafted poplar “floater” frames. All of the frames are finished with a variety of water based Minwax stains and Minwax water based Polycrylic. The canvases have also been coated with a satin UV acrylic.

Susquehanna Simpatico will be exhibited from May 21 through June 12, 2011 at Jonal Gallery, 653 Locust Street, Columbia, PA 17512 (across from Mt. Bethel Cemetery between 6th and 7th Streets). The opening reception is from 5 PM to 9 PM on Saturday, May 21, 2011.

Gallery hours are 10 AM to 5 PM Saturdays, 12 PM to 5 PM Sundays and 5 PM to 9 PM for Columbia’s Fourth Friday events each month.

“Celebrate Your Creativity” Opens Sunday, Jan. 16 at York Art Association

This exhibit is for those who enjoy thinking “outside the box.” Creativity is the theme. This may be as simple as trying a new medium or the expression of an idea that has been brewing for awhile.

Members were invited to submit one original piece of 2-D or 3-D artwork completed within the past two years and not previously shown in a members’ exhibit.

Virtually all 2-D mediums are represented in the show including acrylics, oils, mixed media, photography and watercolors.

1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in both the professional and amateur categories will be awarded. Up to 10 Honorable Mentions across both categories may be awarded.

The opening reception is Sunday, January 16 from 2 PM to 4 PM. Awards will be announced at approximately 3 PM and light refreshments will be served.

The exhibit is open 2 PM to 4 PM Sundays; 9 AM to 3PM Monday through Friday (closed Saturdays) from Sunday January 16 through Sunday, January 30, 2011.
