Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is released!

This is the complete list of packages that should be downloaded for enabling restricted packages -Ubuntu Restricted Extras (URE)- in a freshly installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS,the Lucid Lynx.

This list is offline Ubuntu users who don't have an active internet connection and opt for downloading packages through another PC.No dependency issue will arise here.All dependent packages for a freshly installed system are listed here.There are 69 packages.I think total size of all packages may come around 84MB.

This version URE packages includes Java Runtime Environment.

So..Ubuntu 9.10 is released! I Installed it in my box yesterday!!

This is the complete list of packages that should be downloaded for enabling restricted packages -Ubuntu Restricted Extras- in a freshly installed Ubuntu 9.10,the Karmic Koala.

Change mouse button sequence

Normally computer mouse function in such a way that the first button is pressed using the index finger of the right hand. People who are left-handed frequently find that it is more comfortable to reverse the button codes that get generated so that the primary button is pressed using the index finger of the left hand.

To do this:
Go to System >Preferences > Mouse and select 'Left-handed' from 'Mouse orientation'.

If you want to do some naughty things with mouse keys like to keep first button in second position of mouse or to disable particular mouse key use the command line program 'xmodmap'.It is there in default Ubuntu installation.

Open Applications > Accessories > Terminal

To get current mouse button sequence, run
xmodmap -pp
My xmodmap -pp gave me a list of 32 defined pointer buttons!Out of which maximum 4 we use,if we have a 4 button mouse.

Depending upon your mouse,
To change the sequence, run
xmodmap -e "pointer = 3 2 1"
where "3 2 1" is the changed position from default "1 2 3".If you want other combinations, try yourself.

To disable particular key, say first physical button, run
xmodmap -e "pointer = 9 3 1"
Here I have assigned mouse button "9" (which is not functional) to first physical position.

DOSBox is a MS-DOS emulator for your operating system. It is intended especially for use with old PC games.If you miss games like old Prince of Persia, Dangerous Dave etc then you should use this cool emulator!Even Turbo C compiler can be run inside Ubuntu using DOSBox.TC is difficult to work with Wine emulator.

DOSBox can be installed using Add/Remove programmes or Synaptic Package Manager.
Run it from Applications >> Games >> DOSBox Emulator

To run applications, right click executable file and open with dosbox.
OR you can mount the directory containing executables .To mount your home directory type
mount c ~

BBC World Service is a very good news service in English by British Broadcasting Corporation.In their web site ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/ ) you can listen to online radio and/or select podcasts of different programmes.

Online radio in Rhythmbox: Rhythmbox media player can play online radio and can subscribe to podcast feeds.
Open Rhythmbox.
Click Music >> New Internet Radio Station (or press Ctrl+i)
Now add the following URL into the box and click Add

Now the radio will be added to your list.You can right click and edit name etc.

Free POP3 facility has been given to all Windows live ID (Hotmail, MSN, live etc) users recently.Now you can use mail clients like Thunderbird, Microsoft outlook to download all your emails from your Windows live IDs.If you have a Gmail account then you can do this task directly inside your Gmail so that you will get all Hotmail mails inside Gmail.Actually Gmail has been giving free POP3 and IMAP (see the comparison of both: http://email.cityu.edu.hk/faq/popimap.htm) since its commencing.

Anyway here is the steps to download your old Hotmail mails inside Gmail using POP3.

Go to Settings >> Accounts

In Get mail from other accounts: section click Add another mail account

Now enter your complete Windows live ID and click Next Step

Enter details:
Username: complete Windows live ID like username@Hotmail.com
Password: Windows live ID password
POP server: pop3.live.com
Port: 995
Check the boxes below..but last two are optional. Better adding labelling these mails and archiving it.Now click Add Account
Done!

Now Gmail will check frequently for new mails in the newly added account!

Unlimited email ids with one Gmail account

If you have a Gmail id, then theoretically you can have unlimited email ids. But practically they are derivatives of your original id. This is a kool feature!It gives you immense possibilities on how to utilise your ID.

This is how it works:

Using dots (.):

Gmail does not recognize dots as characters within a username. Instead, it will ignore all dots in a username. For instance, the account yourname@gmail.com receives mail sent to your.name@gmail.com, y.ourna.m.e@gmail.com, etc. This can help in setting filters for incoming mail. However, when signing in, it is necessary to include any dots used in the creation of the account.

You can also put more than one dots (..........) and can put dots before and after your username like "..........user.name...@gmail.com"

Using plus (+):

Gmail supports plus-addressing of e-mails.That means users can send messages to addresses in the format username+extratext@gmail.com, where extratext can be any string, and will arrive in the inbox of username@gmail.com. You can try username+extratext+againextratext@gmail.com also!

This allows users to sign up for different services with different identities and then easily filter all e-mails from those services. In addition, if you receive spam messages directed to an e-mail address with the extra text, you can know what services have leaked out their e-mail address. This is the great use of plus!! But remember some websites do not accept email addresses containing "+", even though its worth a shot!

Other webmails like Yahoo! and Hotmail have their own methods of doing all these.I know Yahoo! does not allow "plus-addressing" but it allows "minus-addressing"

Try google reader for mobile in PC

Google Reader (www.google.com/reader) is my favourite Feed Reader.But its interface is bit heavy and will not load in slow internet connections. Because of this I couldn't acces Reader nowadays and there are lots of unread feeds in my inbox. Recently I came to know about an Orkut Opensocial App which uses Google Reader mobile interface.Thus I tried it in plain browser.

Using mobile version we can check our subscriptions, mark read/unread etc via a PC.
Really helpful for slow connections.

As of now Gmail providing three web views.

Basic HTML - for very low bandwidths
Old Version - for "thats OK" bandwidths :P
New Version - for good bandwidth, this version have maximum features like chat and labs facility.

Normally when we connect Gmail with a slow connection, it first tries to get Newer version but 'realizes' that connection is slow and suggest us to go for Basic HTML.Even if we get rid of this first step gmail will pop-up a window suggesting us to choose reload/older version/basic HTML.So if you want older version or Basic HTML(unless you selected "set basic HTML as default") you will have to wait gmail to "try and fail" Newer version.

You can get rid of all these time consuming things by typing correct URL of interface.They are below:

Different window managers provide different aesthetic approach in managing windows.They provide different kind of desktop effects, menu items, keyboard shortcuts etc.In Ubuntu's GNOME desktop environment, Metacity window manager is included as default.In Kubuntu's KDE desktop environment window manager is kWin.But there are numerous window managers are available to download, most of all less resource consuming than default.

These are my favorite ten nautilus scripts.There are too many scripts are available for download from Internet for different purposes.

I selected these scripts on the basis of two facts.
(a) it should be useful enough in day to day desktop usage
(b) it should not require any other software to be installed

How to install these scripts:
(a) download each script (.sh) files from links given below
(b) copy these files to Scripts folder which is
/home/XXXXX/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts
where XXXXX is to be replaced with your own home directory name.Now whenever we right click inside Nautilus file manager a "Scripts" item will be shown where you can access these scripts.

Note: Credits and license of scripts can be found at respective files.

1. Open as root: open selected folder as root.

2. Font installer: it is said that installing fonts is the best kept secret in Ubuntu!:-) Install fonts with this script.

3. Send link to desktop: send symbolic link of file to desktop.

4. Bulk rename: rename multiple files by adding suffix prefix etc.

5. Set image as desktop background: set selected image as wallpaper in different ways

6. Command prompt here: open gnome-terminal with directory changed to current folder.

7. Mount and unmount iso: .iso CD images can be mounted and unmounted.

8. Move up: move selected files and folders to parent directory.

9. Search in current folder: opens gnome-search-tool in current folder.

10. File type: description of selected file's type.

Configure gnome dictionary for offline use

The inbuilt gnome-dictionary in Ubuntu queries online dictionary servers like dict.org when we type a word.
You can configure this dictionary to use the local dictionary server in your computer.It helps to use dictionary while offline and to save bandwidth while online.

Steps:
1. Install dictd server:
dictd is a server that allows a client to access dictionary definitions from a set of natural language dictionary databases.See Wikipedia article.

2. Download different dictionary databases:
For English language dict-wn and dict-gcide are the recommended dictionary databases for English.These can be installed through synaptic.You can search for other free dictionaries packed in .deb (dict-) packages through synaptic.

3. Configure settings of gnome-dictionary:
Applications > Dictionary
Edit > Preferences
Add a new dictionary source with Hostname as "localhost" instead of "dict.org".Now if the list in Dictionaries tab is refreshed, you can see the available databases.Select the new source and use it.

Best Totem Movie Player Tweaks

Totem (http://projects.gnome.org/totem/) is a media player for GNOME.It is the default player in Ubuntu and Fedora like leading Linux distros.These are five easy tweaks for Totem.

1. Play Totem in System tray

>install AllTray (http://alltray.sourceforge.net/)
>Now using Applications>Accessories>AllTray you can dock any applications to System tray.
>In this case open a Totem window and dock it.
>Here advantage is that even if you close docked window,it will work in tray.

2. Start Totem in system tray when startup

>I assume you already installed AllTray
>open system>preferences>sessions
>In "Startup Programs" tab click Add button
>Command is alltray totem.Fill up Name and Comment as you like.

More: You can replace any programs with totem if you want.

3. Enqueue songs in Totem

>install nautilus-actions package (http://packages.ubuntu.com/nautilus-actions)
>open it system>preferences>Nautilus Actions Configurations

>>Click Add, now fill the fields like this

Label: your choice
Tooltip: your choice
Icon: your choice
Path: totem
Parameters: --enqueue %M

In Conditions tab, you can specify audio,video file types so that option will appear whenever you select these files only.

4. Make an panel-applet-like controls for Totem

>My 'output' look like this.

I can control totem with these four buttons.Currently there is only a music applet for controlling Quod libet,Rhythmbox etc players but not Totem.That is why I did this.

>save these images first (or you can create your own) in your home folder.

>You need to create four custom items to add into panel.Right click a panel >Add to panel.. and select "Custom Application Launcher"

>You can put Name & Comment as you like.
Command of four applets was this for mine.

totem --next

totem --previous

totem --seek-fwd

totem --seek-bwd

I created four seperate launchers.

Note: you can check for other options for Totem by opening Terminal and passing commands
"man totem" or "totem --help".

>Now Click on the icon (see above image) and select your own icon or one I provided
>Arrange these four applets wherever you want in panels.
Drawback:
May not be perfect looking!:)
You cannot save this applet so if you delete it make it again.(Actually you can!Make four launchers in menu list with these commands and you can add these to panel anytime.BTW what is not possible in GNU/Linux!!)

5. Let Totem play your favorite song or playlist on system startup!

>its pretty easy.Change the Command in second tweak above to:

alltray totem /home/userendblog/Music/samplesong.mp3

or

alltray totem /home/userendblog/Music/sampleplaylist.pls

Path to file depends upon you.
>Remember to give files which is in auto-mounting partitions like home folder.

Best document organizer for Ubuntu

If you have downloaded gigabytes of documents in PDF,html,doc,text etc etc formats then you may be finding it is difficult to dig this heap of files to get what you really want.

I checked for a nice document organizer for Ubuntu on Internet and I got some apps too.but the problem with them was that either it does not support adding files from hard drive (ie only useful while online) or written in java.
My search for a perfect one ended in Referencer, the gnome document organizer.
Features:

* add documents or entire folders
* can index verity of file formats
* tag files
* highlight tags based on number of contents
* thumbnail view of files

Remember, these are features only for an average end-user.Actually Referencer has got seamless capabilities as themselves telling they "designed with the scientist/researcher in mind"!

Brief description of Ubuntu packages:
"I can't find an installer or .exe file for Ubuntu" - is a common complaint of Ubuntu newbies.Ubuntu based on Debian project so it uses .deb packages for installing anything (Red Hat based flavors like Fedora uses .rpm packages).

GNU/Linux operating systems uses an innovative library sharing method in which system files will be shared between programs thus optimizes disk space usage effectively.
eg., assume that you are using two media players in Ubuntu like VLC media player and Amarok music player.
For playing an ogg media file both players use ogg decoding library present in your system (library files will be in /usr/lib/ directory).So one program cannot be run without its dependencies.

So if we are installing anything in Ubuntu, every package will list and download its dependencies automatically.Ubuntu uses apt-get for this purpose.apt-get having different GUI front ends like Synaptic (System >> Administration >> Synaptic Package manager), aptitude, gnome-apt etc.

But this 'dependency tradition' makes installing anything offline in Ubuntu is cumbersome.Users who have a slow or no internet connection are the 'victims' of these.http://packages.ubuntu.com/ is a core repository from where we can download packages manually.But there is no method there to download dependencies automatically.So it is sure that you will mess up with downloading dependencies and its dependencies if you are not aware of what packages are there in your system and what not.But this is not as much as painstaking as you may think.Read below

Solutions:

1. Manual Download
You can consider manual downloading from repositories (eg: http://packages.ubuntu.com/).Download the package you want to install through a computer that having an internet connection and transfer it to your Ubuntu box.Open it with GDebi package installer (just double click on .deb file).It will list dependency files if required.You can download those dependencies again and complete installing of package.

More: You can generate download scripts that contains package names and its dependencies using Synaptic package manager.
Open Synaptic
mark the packages you want to install
dependencies will also be marked automatically
open File on menu
click Generate package download script and save the script

Now you can copy package names from the saved script.

2. APTonCD
APTonCD is a program for Debian systems which can be used to backup the packages (found in /var/cache/apt/archives/ folder) of your system.If you are reinstalling your Ubuntu or want to ship your programs with all dependencies to a Ubuntu system which has no internet connection then you can use this nice application.APTonCD makes CD images (.iso files) of entire packages.You can make CDs or DVD from these images.You can retrieve these packages from CD either using Synaptic Package Manager or using APTonCD itself.You can also restore CD images through APTonCD.

Luckily you can install APTonCD .deb file without any dependency issue in a freshly installed Ubuntu PC.
Download it from http://aptoncd.sourceforge.net/ and double click.

3. Addon CDs
Several vendors or volunteers provide Addon CDs for Ubuntu.Vendors may charge you for shipping and all.Volunteer efforts are not matured enough either.You can search for those.

pureUbuntu - A GDM theme for Gnome

This is my first GDM theme (login screen theme) for GNOME desktop.Maximum 1280*1024 pix resolution.
Theme consists of a glass of water in polished metal background with Ubuntu logo.It will suit some MacOS-theme or kind a metal coloured themes.
