Started teaching the first of my Backwards Designed units today (How to Blues- 5th grade) and I thought I’d reflect on the experience. Up ’til now I’ve just been puttering along, re-designing each “unit”(or rather set of fun, but otherwise meaningless, activities) that I have scrapped together and taught since the beginning of the year. A post-thought if you will. This is the first unit that I designed whole-heartedly from the beginning with the end in mind.

First, being the scrapbooker I am, I went out to buy a nice 1/2″ binder last night with a clear cover and printed a pretty insert in cool pastels with the following passage for inspiration:

All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty. Proverbs 14:23

I printed each unit (I’ve completed 9 so far) and bought those little Post-it tabs to color code them by grade level. (Side note: Why do those only come in 5 colors when I need 7 for K-6!?) Anyway, then I placed them in order of trimester, basically putting all of the ones I already taught in the front and the 5 new units for this trimester in the middle. Filling the empty section in the back will be my future goal:) So with pretty notebook in hand, I entered ready to conquer the day, and despite discovering one broken keyboard which threw off my morning a little trying to troubleshoot, the lessons I designed went rather smoothly. I liked having my “activities” already planned out and at an arms distance- something I have gotten away from in the last few years as I have felt like I’ve just been flying by the seat of my pants some days. And yet, I didn’t feel constrained by the activities because I knew I had planned enough to build in the understandings . In 5th grade, I began by passing out the “textbook” packet I made and went over where to get materials which took most of the class period. (Mental note for next class: need to build in time for these “teach-to’s in order to maintain high expectations for materials management.) I showed the students my EQ’s and EU’s but i’m not sure it really sunk in this first day. I’m curious to know how other’s who have done this approach “Hook” the students with these questions and understandings instead of just teaching them by rote. I felt like the students were just being polite and listening to my rambling about what I had in store for them.

But the Blues Unit is going to be fun to teach, and my favorite part of the lesson today was reading one of my favorite books, I See The Rhythm by Toyomi Igus. I love seeing the students reaction when I say the words “Negro” and “I’m Black, and I’m Proud” from the book and the kids look at me in astonishment like I said a cuss word and they are going to go home and tell their parents on me! lol I have a few reservations about teaching about African American culture, when I, the whitest of the white girls from NE can’t even eat Popeye’s chicken because I’m so Gringo and can’t stand the spiciness! Oh well, it will be a lesson for all of us to open our minds and hearts.

A few have asked for the template I used to create my units. It can be found and downloaded here. Also thanks to Joel at SYWWT and Ken at Music Is Not For Insects for reading, subscribing and encouraging. Always good to know when you are listened to and supported. Be sure to check out their blogs too!

Until next time, Sarah

For the past two months I have undergone extensive training in “Backwards Design” using the principles of Understanding by Design by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe. It has revolutionized the way that I have thought about planning for understanding rather than planning “activities” and thematic units “just because they are fun and cool”. I have really drank the koolaid here folks! I will discuss more in future posts, but I plan to make this a regular blog feature. Right now I have just finished re-designing some of the units I just taught in trimester 1. Now, as I embark into trimester 2 on Monday, I will have 6 units to complete over the weekend! The process really does get faster, though, with practice.(It’s a good thing I learned perserverance and endurance in my music classes when I was a kid!)

I would like to share my efforts with those interested and welcome comments or questions as I set forth on this journey to re-design my curricular units into ones that provide opportunities for deeper levels of learning and understanding for my students. Feel free to download any of the units below and modify or adapt for your situation. Enjoy!

Anyway, Smartboardmusic.org has created some fun Interactive games that cam be played with an IAW or online with Adobe Flash. I will plan to use both in my classroom asap!

The Spanish version of the site is http://www.pdimusica.com/.

And here is a cute video of the games in action!

Look at me! I’m posting!
Well folks, looks like I’ve done it again. I went and got shingles after supposedly reactivating the Herpes Zoster virus in my spine due to stress. I suppose everyone being sick at school and me having a low immune system anyway didn’t help. So here I am reminding those who teach and mother and design web pages and serve in ministry and and and…to SLOW DOWN! (meaning me, of course)
Ok, so since I can’t seem to let go of type A me, I researched a little about teacher stress and came up with a few good links to share.

First is Beth Lewis’ article at about.com about Avoiding teacher burnout. I especially like the part where she recommends not “playing teacher” at home. I find myself often giving the “teacher look” of disapproval to my kids and husband and micro-managing around the house. Need to stop that…ok.

Second, Adam Waxler’s article reminded me to SAY NO. I know, I know, it’s so cliche. But really, it as one of my New Year’s Resolutions and I’m not doing so good at it. (Case in Point- this blog and the 5 other websites I have going on now). Saying no means a lot for me because it often means saying no to a ministry opportunity, or to my kids. Saying no makes me feel like I’m turning my back on God or my kids, but since having shingles, I realize that I am worthless if I am not taking care of myself. Resting is the hardest thing for me to do right now. I feel like if there could just be 2-3 more hours in a day, then I could save that every day for a resting time, but would I really?

Joel, over at So You Want To Teach, always has great tips for reducing stress and I went back to read a couple of posts about stress reduction. His ideas are classic and timeless. He writes some truthful realizations:

There will never be enough time to do everything I want to do

There will never be enough money to do everything I want to do

There will never be enough people to do everything I want to do

The music will never sound good enough

Kids will continue to fail their classes, no matter how important I tell them that passing is

Parents will never be happy enough with everything I do in the classroom

I will never be caught up on paperwork

And I will add to the mantras-
There will NEVER be enough time to do everything I want to do. (good enough to repeat)
There will ALWAYS be drama at my job.
I DO NOT have to participate in the drama.
My house will NEVER be clean enough.
My kids ARE NOT an extension of me.
My students ARE NOT an extension of me.
GOD IS the one in control!
This morning, my mom called and said that my dad had a minor stroke and couldn’t remember who he worked for or where he was for a brief moment. It was heart-related and he got better quickly after taking aspirin, but it startled me and got me thinking. I am not that old. My dad is not that old. I can’t go on running my life all around on auto-pilot and letting things pile up inside me ready to sneak out at inefficient times. Someday, in an instant, it could all be gone. Someday, it will be gone, and what legacy have I left for my kids, my students, everyone. I don’t want to be modeling this kind of hectic, no-time-for-anything attitude to my family. I want so much to model a life of joy and peace. I want to wear the skin of Jesus in my personal and professional life- not my own skin festering with shingles due to over-activity and stress.
So dear readers, I’m not shutting down the blog or anything like that. But I am taking a different turn. A “turning of the page” so to speak. I enjoy posting about what interests me, and lately I’ve been so caught up in school that I haven’t had time to really get into what interests ME. I’ve been too busy gossiping in the lounge, worrying about grades, curriculum, and my ever-filthy living conditions, and piling on project after project trying to distract myself from the reality that I may be over-doing it and the guilt that comes with taking time for myself. I need to blog about it and get the words out. I need to SCHEDULE time for it and stick to it. It was fun this summer when I had the time to sit down and write. I need to make the time. I also will be scrapbooking more and probably taking out a portion of my new bonus at work to get a massage monthly.
Hopefully, the shingles will go away soon. I hate feeling like the town leper and feel hurt every time I’m around little babies and can’t hold them or be near them. I hate the looks I get when I tell people I got the shingles. But most of all, I know God is still with me and taking care of me, even when I brought this on myself. I’ve made the time to pray before school each day this week in the parking lot after I turn the engine off. It’s been such a nice, peaceful time to sit there before God and ask for wisdom before I head into whatever tough urban teaching situation He leads me. He is teaching me and guiding me through this trial and I praise him through this hard time. Here is a verse that particularly spoke to me this week:

So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good. 1Peter 4:19

God bless and speak to you again soon.

Sarah

I say faithful, since I’m sure most have dropped off the earth after I haven’t posted in over a month… sorry ’bout that! I decided to let you know what’s been going on with me and send a quick note to say I’m still here. Plate is overflowing as usual. I took on a blog project for Grace Church which started out as a multi-author blog research project, then turned into a full-on Missions site which will feature blog categories for all of the mission projects going on at Grace. Plans are to launch when the new church website launches in January. Also on the burner is a re-mix of rmc-aosa.org which will be going to a WordPress Blog in about a month. I am just so slap-happy with WP that I decided to market myself as a WP developer and move everything into that format that I have my hands in. It will make it tons easier for me to manage multiple blogs, and also give me less of a learning curve when my “clients” need something. I think it’s funny and sad that I’m not getting paid for ANY of this!!

So things at this blog have taken a back seat. I did get to go to a special session of the new DPS School Board candidates this week and have a draft of a post on advocacy waiting in the wings. I am excited that most of the candidates are bold supporters of the arts. We’ll just have to see if they can get creative with the lack of funding given to the state for such purposes. I attended a workshop by Grant Wiggins, author of Understanding By Design, drank the kool-aid, and am now in the process of overhauling much of my activities-based curriculum into a much deeper Quest for Understanding. Two units have been successfully written, but they are units I’ve already taught, so I’m just a little behind. Luckily I have 5 more weeks until the new cycle begins again and I will need 7 fresh units ready. I’ll see if I can scan them to share in the docs section. Procrastination will be my enemy at this point.

This week I will have an early release day on Friday which may allow me to get something else posted, but for now, please keep in touch and I promise I won’t let the blog get too stale over the course of the year. After all, I did warn you.

Wow! Where did the summer go? I realized Sunday that I had not posted an Advocacy post on Thursday or a “Quote of the Week” last week! Oops… sorry dear readers…all two of you (Hi mom!). LOL Then my mind wandered to why this could be- I mean I’ve been pretty consistent about blogging all summer- and I remembered I was back at school those two days trying to set up my classroom and planning for the year already. I didn’t even really realize it, but I’ve really gotten a good head start on the year by getting my room cleared out of most of the CRAP from last year and streamlining my curriculum over the summer. This year it’s going to be quick and hands-on, with lots of “doing” and less “telling”. I’m excited for movement and have rushed ordered Anne Green Gilbert’s BrainDance video in hopes to incorporate it right away. I’m also going back to “basics” by bringing out my Orff Level 1 and most-recent Level 2 curriculum. Today I wrote 2 new welcome songs to go with music from the volumes and will post those here as I have time. So, please forgive me if the blogging slows down a little this fall. I’m going to try to post my classroom management strategies and issues as they come up, but those and Advocacy posts may turn into monthly events while QOTW will have to stay where it is unless I change the name. I don’t know, but QOTM just doesn’t look right;)
Take care and all you readers who are also returning soon or have already, God Bless and Good Teaching!
It makes you how music played a role in their background, and how many of them have made those “neural” connections as a result. Plus, Bobby Mc Ferrin is just awesome and timeless:)
