(Pixabay).

Milwaukee County Parks will not hold the annual July 3 fireworks as the event is without a sponsor.

The annual event costs approximately $370,000, with $350,000 going directly toward fireworks. Last year the event was sponsored by American Family Insurance, J&M Displays, the Milwaukee Parks Foundation and T&M Partners.

“We recognize the disappointment that this news may bring,” Milwaukee County Parks Director Guy Smith said in a statement. “However, our commitment to providing vibrant and accessible recreational spaces remains unwavering. We are grateful for the years of generous support from sponsors that have allowed us to create lasting memories, and we express our gratitude to the community for their continued understanding and support.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a seasonal worker shortage, Parks previously called off the event in 2020 and 2021. The event returned in 2022. But even before the pandemic, it had encountered turbulence. Longtime sponsor U.S. Bank pulled out in advance of the 2019 show, with American Family, the Milwaukee Brewers and T&M, a holding company controlled by Ted Kellner, stepping forward to keep the show going.

The fireworks regularly draw as many as 100,000 people to the lakefront, with many congregating in Veterans Park the whole day. In the past, many residents of suburban communities would bring tents and camp overnight in county parks along the lakefront.

The department said it has found a silver lining in canceling the fireworks, explaining that it can focus its staff and resources on other events happening in parks. The department is encouraging residents to participate in July 4 fireworks and holiday celebrations (listed below) being held in their local parks.

“Despite the disappointment, we believe this opportunity better aligns with our mission to maintain welcoming spaces for everyone to gather and enjoy the outdoors,” Parks said in a statement. “We will continue to support our neighborhood 4th of July celebrations.”

In a press conference Friday afternoon, Smith explained that the rising cost of the fireworks show was limiting the appetite of potential sponsors and the parks department.

“At this point, we believe the 3rd of July fireworks have run their course,” Smith said in a press conference Friday afternoon.

After years of diminishing budgets for the parks system, the department faces a massive backlog of maintenance and infrastructure needs. The department wants to focus its resources on park amenities like pools, playgrounds and trails — as opposed to a fireworks display. Discussions around ending the annual event began as far back as 2017, after a longtime sponsor dropped out, Smith said.

In 2023, the show was reduced from 40 minutes to 30 minutes in response to the cost increases. Even with sponsorship, the department has had to subsidize part of the cost of the fireworks show each year. Jeff Orlowski, director of recreation and business services, said that the department never makes enough money back through parking or other event fees to cover the cost of the fireworks.

It would be pretty spooky if there was a holiday in Milwaukee that didn’t inspire a Brady Street bar crawl. Thankfully, The Monster Bash on Brady will see costumed bar-crawlers making the rounds between Nomad World Pub, WurstBar MKE, Jack’s American Pub, Malone’s on Brady, Saint Bibiana, The Garage, Pete’s Pub and Club Brady. Those who wish to participate can pick up a “passport,” which will then get stamped at each participating bar that they visit. Once the card is completed, it can be turned into Pete’s Pub for a chance to win a trip for two to Las Vegas, including airfare and a hotel on the strip. Stamps are acquired by ordering a drink off of a list of qualifying drink specials. Winners are announced at midnight at Pete’s Pub. The event starts at 7 p.m.

Baltimore-born and Brooklyn-based artist Derrick Adams is bringing his talents to the Milwaukee Art Museum, where he was commissioned to create a multimedia wall mural and sculptural installation made specifically for the museum’s East End. Adams’ art reframes historical Black narratives, taking a close look at how media has played a role in shaping identity. The mural, titled “Our Time Together”, was inspired by a traveler’s guide for Black Americans during the Jim Crow era and includes references to Milwaukee spots like Coffee Makes You Black and the Wisconsin Black Historical Society. The Governor’s 2011-2013 State Budget proposal contains a number of provisions that will have a negative impact on local transit systems, including a reduction of 10% in operating support to local transit systems. Learn more about these and other changes (including article and resource links) and spring election information by visiting our website at www.coalitionforadvancingtransit.com. Transit is a crucial part of a growing economy – in Milwaukee County close to 45% of individuals who use transit services take the bus to work or other job-related opportunities. In the Business Journal’s recent “40 Under 40” issue, winners were asked “Do you support an improved transit system in SE WI as a means of encouraging economic development?” 79% of them said “yes” with no other question generating such a strong, positive response. Emerging leaders in this region recognize that transit is absolutely vital to business growth, talent attraction and connecting our community.
As notes in an earlier update, the removal of collective bargaining provisions jeopardizes $46million in Federal transit aids for Wisconsin transit systems.

Please join us this Thursday for a discussion on this history of the building, neighborhood, and an inquiry into rehabilitation. See the attached flier for more information and forward to friends and colleagues who will be interested in attending. Life of Building 65 – Extraordinary & Uncertain Thursday, February 24, 2011 6pm Refreshments and Networking 7pm Panel Discussion You’re at 3533 North 27th Street. The building in front of you is shrouded in protective nets, windows are stabilized with lumber, and the landscape exhibits a dearth of human activity. Now rewind 70 years: The former A.O. Smith Research and Engineering Building, Building 65, is bustling with over 1,000 scientists and engineers from over 100 colleges and universities world-wide. Built by Chicago architects Holabird and Root (completed in 1931), this architectural feat was far ahead of its time. A masterful combination of design, engineering and business, its structure intrinsically maximized the use of light, air and space to provide an incredibly adaptable and climate-comfortable workspace for a company keen on researching and developing cutting-edge manufacturing processes and innovative machinery that would change the world. Currently, the A.O. Smith Research and Engineering Building is within the City of Milwaukee’s Economic Development Master Plan for the development of the 30th Street Industrial Corridor and what will be known as Century City Business Park. The purpose of the Master Plan is to “create…a long term vision for returning the corridor to a major business and jobs center.” Department of City Development commissioner Rocky Marcoux has no intention of demolishing the building, but the City’s purchase of the area is by no means a promise towards the architectural preservation and/or future restoration of the building. However, Commissioner Marcoux has been active in working with the city’s preservation community and the Century City neighborhood in order to bring this incredible building back to life.
