Chief Thokozile was born and raised in Ofafa and did her schooling in Empageni, she married Chief Ndlovu at a young age. Not being able to have children of her own, her husband did seek another woman and had a son. He was killed in the 1991 violence and being their tradition, she had to take over the responsibility of looking after and raising his illegitimate son who is to become chief when he turns 25. Until then, she was selected as Chief by her community and took over full responsibilities from 1994.

Mama Sipiwe Solomons of Shabalala in Hazyview a nurse and midwife, saw the overwhelming need for feeding and caring for the many vulnerable children in her area. She provides a feeding scheme for orphans, hospice, and home base care to 139 children aged between 8 and 14. She also provides for the unemployed adults, skills training such as gardening and sewing as well adult literacy. She started Hosanna Community Church and Projects in 2008 with the help and support of her husband Solly. Mama Sipiwe’s mission is to cultivate a HIV/Aids free community by providing a good quality health care service to the poor and needy of the grater Hazyview area.

Ebenezer means “rock of hope” the woman behind the centre is Mama Shirley Merime. The centre cares for 66 children and 77 senior citizens and has been running for more than 13 years. Mama Shirley is affectionately known as ‘Mother Teresa’ by the residents as she truly believes that the needs of others are more important than her own.

Mama Selestien Moses together with dedicated caregivers collectively cares for more than 300 children and 83 elderly on a daily basis in the Ashbury, Montagu region situated in the Western Cape. They also work closely with the local welfare department and offer a counselling service to abused children.

Mama Rosemary Machogo is the founder of the centre and cares for 120 children between the ages of three and seven years old. Rosemary uses the Asset Mapping concept to give the children an advantage in terms of early education and development. Mama Rosemary is also involved in fieldwork on women’s development and gender sensitive crime prevention research.

In Pretoria, Mama Rina Malan’s aim is to provide a safe environment for every child who is abused, neglected or suffering from HIV/Aids. Rina believes that “children need to be nurtured to build their creative, intellectual and physical growth.” Mama Rina cares for 15 children and loves them as if they were her own. She also mentors and empowers members of the Soshanguve Community.

Mama Priscilla Simons of Carterville, Wellington started her centre “Helping Hands” six years ago, she cares for 92 children with the youngest aged 18 months. She currently shares her house with 18-orphaned children. Apart from providing the children in her care with meals, she also ensures that their family receives breakfast every morning.

Mama Noxolo Ndzimela has taken over from Mama Veronica at Njongozethu Support Group. Mama Noxolo is a dynamic 22 year who has been working at the centre for many years. Mama Noxolo's attitude is to get the job done, she is respected by her fellow caregivers and has a passion to care for the children. She has good insight to improving the current skills implemented at the centre (i.e. bread baking, sewing and food gardens).

Mama Mary Visage cares for 77 children and adults that are physically and mentally disabled. She provides daily activities and training for each of her members and produces beautiful items that are sold to tourists. Her projects include food plot, sewing, baking and craft work.

Mama Mary Lwate, founder of the Good Hope Community Organisation is our newest member to join the sisterhood. Mama Mary is situated in Winterveld, Mabopane and is an inspirational woman. She started the Good Hope Community Organisation in 1997 to care for abandoned and abused children. Her extended family has grown from 18 girls to over 150 children aged new born to 20 years. The crèche alone has 44 children and hese children are cared for on a full time basis. In addition to caring for the children, Mama Mary ensures that they attend school and teaches them skills such as baking, dressmaking and knitting. The centre also has a beadwork project that produces decorative items and jewellery.

Mama Nomaqumru Lumka of Ikhayalethemba Village and Nceduluntu Educare Centre in Somerset West is well known as Mama Lumka and is our latest Mama to join the sisterhood. Mama Lumka is an exceptional woman who, despite her lowly beginnings and lack of education, has achieved in 10 years what most people of privileged backgrounds are unable to do in a lifetime. Her job entails caring and nurturing small children from the community who have become orphaned through HIV/Aids, abandoned because of physical or mental disability or have been rescued from an abusive home.

Mama Glenrose Mashiqa cares for more than 65 children on a daily basis. Situated in Mdantsane in East London which is Africa’s second largest township, Mama Glenrose saw a great need for children to be cared for whilst their parents are at work or looking for employment. She charges a minimum fee per month per child but has never turned away a parent who cannot afford the fee.

Mama Gladys Siyothula has had a passion for children her whole life. Even as a little girl she would be helping out wherever she could. Mama Gladys studied childcare and worked in various projects until she started her own Ethembeni Drop-In Centre in 2008. Today she attends to well over 340 children on a daily basis with the assistance of 34 caregivers. About 30% of the children in her care are HIV/Aids affected and she sees to their daily medical needs. She not only provides meals for all these children but she also assists with getting their paper work in order with home affairs.

Mama Florence Nyakiso is a housewife, mother, granny and a foster care mother of two children. She is dedicated to providing a safe haven for children that was left unattended while their parents were at work within her community. In 1995 she started Self-Help Day Care and with the help of 2 caregivers and 4 teachers she nurtures and educates more than 163 children.

Young Mama Felicity Maluleke has taken over the legacy of Mama Linah who passed away in June 2009. Thanks to Mama Linah's care and guidance, Felicity who has been working at the centre for four years was able to gain an abundance of knowledge to care for the disabled children of the centre. Mama Felicity shares the passion and dedication of caring for those who cannot care for themselves. "I want to provide these children a safe and secure environment and will continue to find our own premises so that we can have a place we can call home." Says Mama Felicity.

Mama Bahle Ngcobo, founder of the Bahle Care Centre has left behind a legacy of upliftment and goodwill over to Eunice Dlamini. The centre looks after more than 1510 orphaned, abused and HIV/Aids affected children and 516 elderly. They bring new hope to the elderly of Umlazi by teaching them to help her care for the young ones.

Mama Dorah Tshabalala is the proverbial sponge that soaks up every bit of knowledge she can. She never had the opportunity to go to school, yet many years later she opened the doors of her own pre-school. Mama Dorah cares for more than 30 children between the ages of six months and five years. She not only feeds them on a daily basis but also teaches them the basics of reading and writing.
