Registration now open for webinar, How does Information Literacy in the First Language Contribute to the Development of Information Literacy in the Second Language?

When: Thursday, July 2, 2026 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Where: virtual

Cost: Free for ASIS&T members; $25 for non-ASIS&T members

Registration

This webinar presents a study examining the mechanisms through which multilingual students’ information literacy (IL) experiences in their first language contribute to their perceived ability to engage in IL practices in a second language. Drawing on translanguaging theory, social cognitive theory, and research on cross-linguistic literacy transfer, the study investigates the interplay among first-language IL experiences, translanguaging self-efficacy, transpositioning self-efficacy, and second-language IL self-efficacy. In addition to variable-centered analyses, a person-centered approach is employed to identify distinct learner profiles based on students’ first-language IL experiences, translanguaging self-efficacy, transpositioning self-efficacy and examine the differences regarding their second-language IL self-efficacy. Findings highlight the critical role of multilingual resources in shaping IL development, offering implications for more inclusive, asset-based pedagogies in multilingual and higher education contexts.

About the Presenter

The Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) is delighted to announce that John DiGilio has been selected to receive the 2026 John Cotton Dana Award. This award recognizes an individual member of the Association for a lifetime achievement as well as exceptional service to the Special Libraries Association and the library and information profession. DiGilio is the Firmwide Director of Library Services at Sidley Austin LLP.

In nominating DiGilio for the award, Bill Fisher and Tony Landolt said, “John’s time as both SLA treasurer and SLA president came during periods of upheaval for the Association. He was instrumental in keeping SLA “afloat,” allowing SLA to be a suitable merger partner for ASIST. Jill Strand wrote, “John’s calm and thoughtful leadership has long been an inspiration, and he continues to be an active member and serves as an excellent role model to future leaders and information professionals, to me and others.” And Tom Rink said, “Throughout his career, John has engaged in activities that create a meaningful impact on the library and information profession.” And Dan Bostrom wrote, “John’s legacy is knowing that SLA members found a good home. He did everything in his power to save SLA, but when that wasn’t enough, he found the next best thing. I hope that resonates with people for a long time.”

Upon learning of his selection, John said, "Being chosen for the John Cotton Dana Award is by far both one of the most humbling moments of my career and one of its high points. I have long been passionate about what I do and about the importance of the information profession. To be recognized for that work and for my commitment to serving and supporting the greater profession makes me feel like not only that I have done something right over the decades, but that I have contributed in some way to the success and longevity of the profession that has sustained and inspired me. Thank you, SLA and ASIS&T, for both this honor and the support you have given me in achieving my own success."

DiGilio will receive the award during the ASIS&T 2026 Information Science Summit & Special Libraries Conference (ISS/SLC26) which will be held 6-9 June 2026 in Albuquerque, NM.

We have some basic comments. Are these based on some focused domains/applications? Looks like standards included/used by this Part 4 are not really ‘standards’. [See the list in 5.1 Collection of metadata element sets.] They should consider the ones already adopted by communities and societies, especially the ISO standards (including DCMI terms.
This award recognizes individual members of the Association who show exceptional promise of leadership and contribution to the association and profession.

Her leadership has greatly influenced the growth of the Students & New Information Professionals (SNIPs) group in SLA, and she has been the driving force in ensuring that SNIPs survived the transition over to ASIS&T and continues to gain momentum. She values community and is valued for her quiet determination and dedication to SLA and now ASIS&T, serving on the conference committee for two years. She has a wealth of knowledge about working in an academic library and uses anecdotal experiences to inform larger ideas and issues in the academic library field. She is always willing to share her time and energy to see a project through to the end and to step up and take on additional responsibilities, while also knowing how to set professional boundaries so that the value of involvement in a professional organization is not lost. This comes through in her engagement with SNIPs, on the conference committee, and with the individuals who have been lucky enough to work alongside her and get to know her as a passionate and reliable peer.

Upon learning of her selection as the award winner, Gray said, “Receiving this award is an incredible honor, and I’m especially grateful for the recognition from my colleagues. My work with ASIS&T’s Students and New Information Professionals, along with two years of conference planning for ASIS&T and SLA, has shaped my growth as a leader while allowing me to support and learn from others entering the profession.”

Dilhani Munasinghe's contributions to ASIS&T reflect both scholarly promise and a deep commitment to professional service. Ms. Dilhani first demonstrated her research excellence by securing second place in the SIG-III International Paper Contest in 2024, a highly competitive achievement for an emerging scholar. She has since grown into an active contributor to the community, serving as a jury member for the SIG-III International Paper Contest in 2025–2026, where she evaluated submissions, offered constructive feedback, and helped identify impactful research. Her leadership potential is further evident in her selection to the ASIS&T Publication Committee for 2026–2027, a role that involves shaping the Society’s scholarly communication and future publication practices. In addition, she is serving as a reviewer for the ASIS&T Annual Meeting 2026, underscoring her ongoing engagement with academic quality and peer review. What distinguishes Ms. Dilhani is her ability to excel in these demanding roles while maintaining her primary professional responsibilities. Her trajectory shows maturity, initiative, and sustained dedication to the field of information science and technology.

Upon learning of her selection, Dilhani said, "I am incredibly grateful to the Award Jury and ASIS&T Board of Directors for this prestigious recognition. This award reflects the collaborative spirit of our field, and I am excited to continue advancing research and practice in information science."

Dr. Lingzi Hong has established herself as an emerging leader whose work reflects both intellectual distinction and strong potential for long-term impact on the profession. Her scholarship sits at the intersection of information science, artificial intelligence, and human-centered computing, with a particular focus on how computational systems can better respond to users’ information and communication needs in socially significant contexts such as crisis informatics and health communication. Through this work, she has demonstrated not only a strong research trajectory but also a clear vision for how information science can address pressing societal challenges. Her ability to connect rigorous research with real-world information problems reflects the kind of leadership and forward-looking perspective that this award is intended to recognize. She has taken on important academic leadership roles, including directing academic programs and research initiatives, while also mentoring students and junior scholars. Her work consistently shows initiative, creativity, and a commitment to advancing the field in ways that are collaborative, inclusive, and practically relevant. Equally important are Dr. Hong’s contributions to ASIS&T, which have been substantive and sustained. She has been an active member of the association since 2020 and has taken on several leadership roles, including SIG Cabinet Deputy Director beginning in 2026, Panel Track Chair of the ASIS&T Annual Meeting 2026, Panel Vice Chair of the ASIS&T Annual Meeting 2025, Co-Chair of the ASIS&T IDEA Institute since 2023, and Chair of the Special Interest Group on Social Media in 2024. Her involvement in ASIS&T reflects a genuine commitment to strengthening the association as a space for intellectual exchange, community building, and professional development.

Receiving the news of the award, Lingzi said: “I am truly honored and deeply grateful to receive the James M. Matarazzo Rising Star Award. This recognition is a wonderful encouragement for me. I sincerely appreciate the support and trust from my collaborators, students, and the broader professional community. I will try my best to keep rising, continue growing, contributing, and serving the ASIS&T community with greater dedication and purpose.”

These recipients will receive their awards during the ASIS&T 2026 Information Science Summit & Special Libraries Conference (ISS/SLC26) which will be held 6-9 June 2026 in Albuquerque, NM.

Approval of Proposed New Work Item: Trust Markers (ITEM)

The standards co. itbee has voted YES

This ballot is to approve a proposed new work item to create aNISO Recommended Practice for identification of trust markers for increasing credibility and trust in research.

Ethics and integrity cases in submitted manuscripts are becoming an increasingly common problem, whilst retractions continue to grow at a rapid rate. These cases are caused by intentional misconduct and fraud, as well as a host of unintentional poor research practices. Most good journals undertake a range of checks to identify these issues ahead of peer review and publication. However, the specific checks that are undertaken are highly variable and typically not shared on a journal site, whilst most preprint servers conduct far more limited checks. This means that the specific checks that have been conducted and passed are unclear to the reader, especially for those that are unfamiliar with different scholarly publishing mechanisms and terminology, and that are consuming different types of content across a wide range of sites on the Internet.

The goal of this project will be to produce a NISO Recommended Practice (RP). This RP will provide consumers of scholarly content (with a focus on articles but irrespective of type of venue of publication, e.g. across preprint servers, journals) with necessary definitions and a framework for understanding items that would signal trust in published scholarly content.

For this event, themed Celebrating Theory and Practice, we invite submissions within information science/studies (broadly construed) covering research (completed or in progress), practical projects or examples, and conceptual work. Inspired by the addition of SLA members to the Europe Chapter, the theme encourages a celebration of the nexus of theory and practice; this includes for example ongoing changes in digitality and digital environments, benefits and risks of emerging information technology and functionality, and information seeking and use as it can help (or hinder) people in meeting their information-related needs in the information society (including but not limited to the European region). We welcome broad interpretations on the conference theme, example topics include:

The Information Science Trends (IST) conference series – background:

The event is part of the series on Information Science Trends (IST). The events focus on current research topics, including invited speakers from research and industry. Our first event in Hamburg (April, 2019) focused on the topic Search Engines and Information Retrieval. Our second, online, event focused on Health Information Behaviour (June, 2020) and our third on Information Science Research During COVID-19 and Post-Pandemic Opportunities (June, 2021), and our fourth on Untold Stories (June, 2022). Our fifth event was hybrid and focused on Information Science Perspectives on Documenting Processes and Practices (June, 2023), whereas the sixth was online and explored Living Online and Offline in Darkness and Light (July, 2024). Last year’s meeting theme was Creativity, Transformation, and Empowerment (June, 2026), held in Manchester UK and online. The IST conferences have been awarded the ASIS&T Chapter Event of the Year multiple times. Our events provide an opportunity to network and share ideas and interests from the different fields of information science and related disciplines.
