Eastern University Games!!

This is the first announcement about Eastern University Games (EUGs).

What: EUGs - 3 days of ultimate, 4 nights of parties
When: July 3 - 7 2011
Where: Canberra
Costs: Preliminary costs are: $125 for registration, $350 for the UNSW package (accommodation, security, hoodie) + money for food, alcohol, transport and uniform

EUGs tryouts and trainings will be starting on Sunday, May 1st 3 - 5pm at Centennial Park. These tryouts and training sessions are open to any UNSW student, and girls are particularly encouraged to come along.

What: EUGs tryouts/training
When: Starting Sunday May 1st, 3 - 5pm, this means that you need to be ready to run by 3pm (not turning up and putting your shoes on at that time)!
Where: Centennial Park, corner of Parkes and Dickens Drives
What to bring: White AND black shirts, water bottle, cleats or sneakers to run in, DISC (you must have one of these, you can purchase one on the day ($15) if you dont own one already).
Costs: Free for club members. Not a member, then bring your money along ($10 new members, $15 if you played with UNSW before this year) and sign up on the day.

Interested in trying out but can not make the Sunday Sessions... then please email the club to let us know.
Interested in coming to the Sunday sessions but not trying out for EUGs... that is fine, come along too!

Sydney Uni IV

As we mentioned during training, we're going to send two teams to the Sydney Uni IV. This is a great opportunity to represent the club and will definitely the right step to take towards eventually representing the uni for Uni Games.

Here's an official call of interest for the Sydney Uni IV. Here's what you have to do :
1. Go to http://afda.com/rego/showdivision.php?divisionid=1661
- You'll have to register with the AFDA before you can view that page. Register and get your ID and password.
2. Once you've registered with AFDA, look for the UNSW team (Captain - Ng Yew Eng, team ID 9267) that is open for registration, and register yourself in that team.

The teams need to be decided by this weekend and if your name is not on that list, we'll assume that you're not interested in playing for this IV. It is open to ALL CLUB MEMBERS but if there is an overwhelming response, selections will be made by seniors members based on skill, training attendance and future commitment to the club and sport.

Hope to see you name on that list soon.

Last weeks session was a great success. Despite the uninspiring weather, we still managed to get a good number of us out to run hard and complete a few fantastic drills. The people who attended really benefited from the windy weather to get their upwind throws fine tuned.

This week, we're looking for focus more on drills that would encourage and hope to teach newer players more about the dynamics of a vertical stack.

SYDNEY UNI IV

Boys and girls,

The SYDNEY UNI IV is back!

UNSW Ultimate Frisbee is looking to send two teams with the aim of developing newer players and exposing newer players to an actual competitive tournament.

Registration closes (Saturday 9th April). Teams will probably be finalized a week or two before then.

We have a few goals for this session. The first is to develop anyone that is keen to play. We will have drills aimed at both the beginners, intermediates and advanced players. This will give the beginners a good opportunity to see how the game is actually played. We will look in depth at the dynamics of the game.

Secondly, we will use this as preparation for the USYD IV, and eventually Uni Games. This is the first tournament of the university season, and we will be trying to sport two teams.

Tournaments are great fun and you learn a lot. We will develop skills and tactics that we hope are effective. But, if you cant make the Sunday trainings, don't worry, you're still welcome to play the IV!

What to bring:

Dear Cool People,

Learn to Play Ultimate Frisbee!

When: Thursday's 3 to 5pm, Week Zero to Week 2 (inclusive: March 3rd, 10th, 17th)

Where: Village Green, UNSW

What: Learn to play Ultimate Frisbee... UNSW Ultimate is running a three week learn to play Ultimate Frisbee course. It is an introduction to the rules of the sport, and teach you how to throw a variety of throws, how the sport is played, and how to be cool.

Costs: Free to all club members, so sign up during o-week and purchase a disc at the same time. (New membership + disc = $20 = cheap as)

How can I join: Talk to any of our club members during o-week at our stall... or come a little early on March 3rd to sign up!

What will I need to bring: Shoes to run around in (sneakers/ trainers), clothes to run around in (preferably bring a white shirt and a black shirt for team games), water bottle, disc (can be purchased with your membership), sense of fun and an open mind :)

O-Week!

We're back in session in a couple of weeks. We kick start the session with O-Week! Here we will have a stall set up with our very own UNSW Ultimate Frisbee Club superstars there to answer all your questions and sign some autographs. Our new discs and shirts will be available for sale as well. Or for barter with something cooler. (I doubt you'll have anything cooler than one of our discs).

We will also be having a demo game tentatively on the Thursday(24th Feb) of O-Week from 3-5pm. Date and time of the demo game may be subject to change. Watch the "Play Ultimate" page for updates.

As soon as Semester 1 of 2011 begins, we will be running our regular Thursday 3-5pm training/pick up sessions at the Village Green. All are welcome! During the first 4-5 weeks there will also be a learn to play session for new-comers at the same time. Not to be missed. Look out for a bunch of sexy looking people throwing the piece of white plastic around. NO DOGS ALLOWED.

Australian University Games 2010, Perth

While most of UNSW was following the same dull routine of class and homework, the UNSW ultimate Frisbee team, the Stubbies, competed in the university games in Perth. We had an amazing week, full of fun, Frisbee and victory.

On Monday, the fun began. W caught taxis to the fields, psyching ourselves up for the opening game against Murdoch. Despite some incidental injuries, we came out of the game with a hard fought victory.

The intensity carried through to the ACPE game. They played a rather unconventional style of Frisbee. Their physical fitness provided no match for us as they raced off to an early 3-0 lead. We knew we couldn’t win playing their style and after some rethink of strategy, we raced off to a victory easy.

The final game of the day was against ECU. A small university with big spirit. They played hard, but we played harder, and finished the first day undefeated.

The next morning, we stumbled out of our beds, with a painful mixture of hangovers and sore muscles that would have killed any other sportsman. We made our way to the fields for our game against Adelaide University, confident from our winning streak. But, their defence was too strong for us, and our team of receivers struggled. We played some great points with chilly offence and fantastic flow, but we simply didn’t have the ability to keep doing it every point. This meant that Adelaide ran away with a victory.

Our first loss of the tournament did not kill our spirits. Instead, it served as a motivator. We came out hard against Curtin, and won confidently.

The next day held the challenge of QUT. Despite them playing savage, with only 7 people on their team, they put up a hard fight. The game was very entertaining, QUT singing ‘Every little thing is going to be alright’, and playing a point with a puppet, which even got a block. It was definitely the most enjoyable and well spirited game of the tournament.

The last game of the pools was against La Trobe. Both teams came out firing, but they were too strong for us. They brought tight defence and spectacular offence. We put up a formidable effort, playing some relaxed, free flowing offence points, but we were unable to keep up with them in the end.

Our four girls, playing close to savage for the whole tournament, were a little worse for wear. Even in their injured states, they played their heart out for us in the semi-finals against Adelaide Uni. Despite losing to them in the pools, we came into the match fired up and confident. However, they had improved just as much as we had, and blocked everything we threw at them. We ended up losing knowing we had played our best.

The third/fourth playoff was against Murdoch. We raced off to an early lead and ran away with the victory, winning Bronze for UNSW. Good result Stubbies.

Ultimate aside, the whole week was full of crazy partying and epic costumes. Pictures to be posted up on the website soon.

The UNSW team would like to thank Ken and Nadine for their irreplaceable coaching, Tom for being a great captain that didn’t ramble on for hours, and Sue ray for taking wonderful photos of everyone during the week.

Harry Potter Hat Tournament!

The Hogwarts Express has left the station!! The most magical, mad, ridiculously fun and fantastical tournament Australia has seen since, well, a long time I'm sure, is COMING!!!

What: Two-day surf and turf Swiss draw Hat Tournament.

What is a surf and turf tournament? That's a day on the grass, a party, and a late start for ultimate on the beach on day two.

What is a Hat tournament? Anyone can come and the teams are randomly selected out of the sorting hat, making sure equal numbers of players of any playing ability are on each team!!

When?? NOV 27/28 2010 (this is AFTER all university exams are finished, muggle students!)

Where? Sydney, Australia: Day 1 - Grass Ultimate at Centennial Park, Day 2 - Beach Ultimate at South Maroubra Beach (pending confirmation of fields bookings!!

What's the party theme? For one night only the Yule Ball will take over Sydney! The party will be a formal affair, and you will be required to appear in your formal robes. This will be an actual ball, so please break out your formal dress/fancy suit/tuxedo/outfit from the races/cloaks and ACTUAL ROBES etc...with a twist of course!

How much? The tournament should be around $85, depending on numbers, including field and beach bookings, shirts, food, party, bar tab, random surprises, and magical player packs!

How many? At the moment, we have space for 168 people, so get registered!! Payment details will be available soon!

What else?? Players will also be sorted based on their character by the sorting hat. You are encouraged to come in Harry Potter themed outfits, wear robes on the fields and generally be as magical as possible. There will be a showcase game of Quidditch, Free beer for awesomeness, prizes for the best costumes etc... and billets (people to stay with) can be arranged for out of staters!

But I've never read/hate Harry Potter! This tournament will be HEAPS OF FUN for everyone! From those who can tell the difference between a Rhodesian Ridgeback and a Hungarian Horntail, to those who wouldn't know what a Quaffle was if it hit them in the face (and at this tournament it just might!), a fun Ultimate experience is guaranteed. There will be Golden Snitches!

Savage Seven's Results!

Last Sunday, UNSW hosted the Savage Seven's (7 players per team, no subs) tournament at Five Dock. UNSW Ultimate has been hosting this tournament for a number of years and it has a fantastic reputation. This year was another great success... 20 teams (some people flying in from Brisbane and Melbourne), good fields, fine weather (sunny with a slash of wind towards the end of the day) and a delicious lunch (yum, falafels)!

In the finals, teams Stickler (Capt : Tom Flanagan) and trabant (Capt : Ken Shepherd) slugged it out and took it to universe point. Stickler came out victorious in the epic match between two well experienced teams. Final score was Stickler 7-6 trabant.

Big thanks to all teams for attending and playing some good Ultimate Frisbee. Looking forward to more tournaments to come.

NSL (North Sydney League) Spring Hat

UNSW is excited to be bringing you Savage Sevens again this year!

When : 9.30am start on Sunday 12th September!

Where : Timbrell Park, Five Dock, Sydney
Format : 4 guys, 3 girls, no subs
Payment : Team payment of $175. This includes all the usual stuff... lunch, fruit, fields, afda fees, prizes etc

We currently have room for 16 teams... registration is now OPEN. To confirm your spot at this tournament, you need to have 7 players registered and to have paid the team fee.

In addition, I would also like to mention that without David's energy and dedication for all things ultimate two years ago, the club would be a shadow of what it is today... so a huge thanks to David for keeping the wheels turning.

This year the Australian University Games (AUGs) are being held in Perth (26 sept to 1 oct). UNSW will be sending a team and trials and training will be starting next Sunday, August 1st. AUGs is a week of frisbee, parties and fun... and anyone who has been will tell you how awesome it is!
