I still need to go shopping for actual running clothes but I can't go until next week so until then I don't know what to wear.
Lately I've been wearing a pair of sweatpants shorts that are 83% cotton and 17% polyester, and a regular loose cotton t-shirt but now I hear that it's not a good idea to wear cotton. So until I get actual running clothes, what material clothing can I wear to run?

I am reasonably convinced that these links now work without any need for Google signin.

Notes for the first session explaining what heuristic evaluation is and giving examples of heuristics to keep in mind while doing an evaluation
http://docs.google.com/View?id=dck6n3zz_110s8wt94dx

The problem list was generated in second session - a group evaluation of Bing.com shopping area. We put ourselves in the shoes of a parent looking for a baby gate. That wasn't too difficult because we had two dads in the room!

Everyone was allowed to shout out any problems they identified and everybody then voted silently how serious they thought the problem was. I took all those votes and averaged them out and then sorted the final list in descending order. The resulting list shows potential usability problems in order of priority which can be taken back to your designers and developers for discussion or fed into user testing to confirm whether these are real user problems.

Bing.com problem list

Hi all,

I'm getting together all the notes and scraps of paper and hastily-typed notes that I amassed in the Insipred Ideas surgery, and putting them here in the forums for everyone to have a look at and to comment on.

Everyone seemed up for the idea, and this is a call for all the people who expressed interest in the Hacker's Meet to give me a shout on twitter. I'd also especially like to thank @richardrixham once more for the inspired presentation at #uns1 that is the whole reason for this continued discussion and eventual first meet.

I'll place what I get together here very soon (before Friday this week), and in the meantime I'm contactable through twitter as @GunstarCowboy. I'd suggest the twitter tag #sheff_arduino.

Call me!

P.S - Ian Yes - I think that it does. I think that there are several places we could ask about meeting space, including Access Space and The Universities. What do you think?

These will now be presented to the panel, who can offer advice, direction and foresight to help take the ideas forward.

Our panel are:

Chris Dymond - Director of Business Innovation (TechnoPhobia)

Lucy Wurstlin - Digital Commissioning Manager (4iP)

Dougald Hine - accidental entrepreneur (School of Everything, Signpostr )

The panel introduce themselves, and we begin.

James Methley introduced the first idea - an Arduino Club, based on Richard Rixham’s demonstrations of the hardware hacking technology. James wants to start a group in Sheffield to learn and collaborate using the technology and is looking for advice on how to run the group.

Chris thinks that James needs to think about how to structure the enthusiasm in the club for longevity and helping to manage the expectations of the members.

Lucy says that keeping the membership up over time is a challenge for any club to tackle. She refers to a previous Maker Faire event in Sheffield supported by 4iP that had a real cross-fertilization between hardcore hackers and arts and crafts people, working together to produce innovative solutions. She was seriously impressed by that event.

Dougald builds on Lucy’s comments by suggesting that that cross-fertilisation might help to keep the club going. He also suggests that James should look perhaps to organisations like Access Space to provide a meeting venue, perhaps even looking for empty and unused spaces.

The floor is opened for the participants, and Emma Persky suggests using software to help run a democratic club for all decisions to do with organisation.

Ian Forrester says that James should start as soon as he can, to avoid losing momentum - the big problem is starting, then you can grow. Just do it!

Jag Gill suggests using an online presence for members and non members of the club - it could be later used in future to promote any products that the club produced, and that wrapped up the first presentation.

Steve Brett then began presenting ‘Electronic Cobblers’. They want to use the old fashioned idea of a cobbler - because you could get your shoes repaired so you didn’t throw them away and buy new ones as often. They’d like to set up a system by which people with the skills to repair and repurpose electronic equipment can be made available to people with old or broken equipment.

Richard King then talked about creating a brand, and extended the idea to other skills, not just electronics repair. Could craftspeople and artisans be involved in the same way?

Chris says that this kind of model has worked in other industries - in Europe there was a guy who started taking old Land Rovers and breaking them up for parts - building new Land Rovers out of the recovered parts. It’s taken off and produced a hugely successful company, and that just came from one guy with an idea. He also remembers that not so long ago there were electronics shops that could repair equipment, and there are not many around anymore. It would be a good idea to find out why that happened before committing.

Lucy was recently in Cuba and there are Electronic Cobblers everywhere there. It’s an economic necessity. Richard highlights that he is proposing re-purposing and reinventing equipment not just repairing it, which could give the products value over and above new products. Dougald thinks there are similarities to reinventing old clothes and the like, and poses the question: is this idea for a business, or a social movement?

Chris asks what will prompt people to bring their devices to Electronic Cobblers? Dougald mentions Access Space and its Redundant Technology initiative. He thinks the problem wasn’t finding enough old computers - it was finding enough creativity to find something to do with a warehouse full of old computers.

The panel suggests focussing on a single product with ‘Wow Factor’. It may be a good idea to work with Helen Milner’s Swap Shop project as they seem to have similar goals.

Lucy wraps up with the thought that it would be great if there was a policy change that made it much more difficult for people to throw equipment away - they would really have think about what happens to their old kit. Hannah York suggests some initiatives that could be useful for the project. Chris Warburton suggests looking at the inkjet cartridge refilling scheme for ideas as to how to get the knowledge that this kind of old-to-new transformation is even possible! That wrapped up the second session.

Joe Chacko, on ratemydriving.com. He talks about a conversation over breakfast where the idea emerged to take photographs of cars and their number plates, which can then be linked up to drivers via DVLA licensing information. Drivers could upload their photographs to an online service with information about where the photograph was taken and a description of the behaviour that prompted the photograph.

This information could be aggregated and analysed to prompt drivers about negative feedback, and perhaps even made available to the public.

Joe mentions that the time-saving idea of going straight to vigilante.com was rejected! It would be important to ensure that driver’s information was safe.

Dougald kicks off the feedback by warning about the need to research the legal questions involved around making this information available. He thinks the idea is interesting, crowdsourcing this information on driver quality. He thinks that Joe should think about how the system could feed into the legal system instead.

Chris asks what the idea is going to achieve? Is it to improve the quality of driving in the country or intimidate individual drivers. This idea prompted several responses about different ways to use the gathered information.

Dougald thinks there is a risk that the idea could lead to a new kind of road rage, and Lucy also suggests that it might encourage people to take photographs and send text messages whilst driving themselves. Dougald also thinks that the system might have a place working alongside the police, providing publicly generated content as evidence. Steve points out how cyclists can have helmet mounted cameras which can provide evidence.

The discussion then focussed to some degree on the reliability of photographic evidence. Jag wraps up with the point that we don’t need to focus on the photographic evidence - pedestrians and cyclists are also able to produce content and it might just be text based or verbal.

Time for the sessions was up, so Joe wrapped up the Inspired Ideas Surgery.

Jag wrapped up unsheffield 2009 with some feedback on the event, thanks to the sponsors, volunteers, organisers - and of course thanks to the participants.
Inspired Ideas Surgery

Richard King on "Chris Dymond: What can we do with 100 MB/s broadband?"

Introduction:

Digitally Transforming South Yorkshire - the digital region project - http://www.digitalregion.co.uk

From the funding body’s point of view this is an attempt to bring broadband to as many people as possible. Lots of the money has come from Yorkshire Forward: incentives to rejuvenate and regenerate the region. Also has EU funding.

Main contractor is Thales - their interest is in using the project as an urban test-case for metropolitan networking.

There is a similar project using WiMax in Nottingham.

Discussion:

Will most people just do what they already do now but faster? Will it be a similar difference to the step between dial-up and broadband? What don’t people do already because the network is too slow? Just because the network exists it won’t necessarily get used.

What else will the initiative do? Public training courses? Cheap hardware? How will people be educated about the possibilities opened to them by this network.

Difference between installing a WiMax network - a new network that causes disruptive innovation - and incrementing the speed of an existing network - iterative innovation.

If this is an economically deprived area, how do we know people will want to pay for this service? What are the consumer costs going to be?

Gaming will probably be an early use of extra bandwidth.

Cottage industry of home data centres?!

Will it change home-working practices? Can run VPN and citrix applications at home just as well as you do in the office. Remote video editing applications?

What if you had infinite bandwidth? No limits? Instant transfer?

Questioning whether people need this speed of broadband at all: but innovation hasn’t necessarily been based around what people need - net connectivity is desirable. People want the convenience etc.

Having a glut of bandwidth means you don’t need to worry about other people using your networks: maybe society will change its attitude to opening up home wifi connections for sharing. Could a municipal wifi system evolve out of ubiquitous 100 MB/s.

Why is this being done? Because BT won’t let anyone else exploit their infrastructure and theirs is crumbling. This is not so much about duplicating a network as replacing it.

Other regions and countries already have this kind of network - what has happened in places like South Korea, Malasia, Taiwan?

Pervasive wifi could bring augmented reality in public spaces.

100 MB/s would allow a much more multitasking paradigm of internet use in the household. Currently, families have to choose between watching iPlayer, downloading the latest linux distro or calling people on skype. The extra bandwidth would allow people to stop worrying about choking their own network.

Video conferencing / video calls could become much more widely adopted, but depends on hardware being ubiquitous and price being very low or zero.
Chris Dymond: What can we do with 100 MB/s broadband?

Paul Brabban on "Ed Goring: Reinventing the Music Business"

Ed says that people in the music industry need to realise that online promotion isn’t just about the music, you have to provide a rich experience. Is there an out-of-the-box tool that can create relevent functionality, like podcasts, tourdates and news.

Ed uses Podomatic. He likes how he can create a podcast and distribute it all in one tool. He tried other less joined up tools, and found it tedious and problematic to create the same functionlity.

Musicians want to spend their time writing music - they don’t want to get home from gruelling studio sessions to have to start working again. There is a need to make money though.

Slice The Pie relies too much on investors, not the musicians.

The needs of the musician must take second place to the need to get the music out there to people. Musicians still think that it’s all about them - they don’t see their music as a product that needs to the bought by people. It’s almost as if there’s a belief that the music buying public will go back the old models of buying music given enough time - they won’t.

Spotify and last.fm create a network of recommendations that people use to decide what to listen to.

Ian Forrester shows graphics demonstrating an ecosystem in dance music of creating, remixing and buying. He thinks this model works well - Ed agrees that it works in the case of successful DJs with high levels of exposure, but it also works against smaller professionals.

Releases on net label, on a donation basis generates a bit of money for musician.

Ed says don’t try and replace the music industry - it’s broken anyway. Create a new, open model. There are online services which are like the Flickr of sound. Promoters could take more responsibility for generating those sales - a good middleman who’s not too greedy, watching the consumers could work really well for both themselves and the musicians.

There are more mixes shared online weekly than could be sold in a month. One problem in trying to understand what’s going on is the lack of good metrics that have adapted to the current environment.

One of the things that works in twitter’s favour is that people can feel that they share a relationship with celebrities. Fans could follow groups on the road. A smart promoter might use a similar idea to let fans feel a relationship with a band - and then monetize that relationship.

People don’t necessarily seem to see the relationship anymore between creation of music and payment for it. That relationship must exist somewhere.

Should musicians sign up with PRS? Doing so jeopardises relationships with other music distribution mechanisms like last.fm.

Why does free software thrive when music is having problems? Both can be transported easily over the internet. The music industry is an older model.
Ed Goring: Reinventing the Music Business

Mark Gibbens on "Emma Persky: Social Media Consultancy - the trade that dare not speak its name"

Social Media Consultants can’t say they exist because people get upset. But if there weren’t any, there wouldn’t be any social media. Discuss!

SMCs go into an organisation and look at how they’re using technology. One of the strongest approaches is to use social media for rapid prototyping, crowdsourcing viewpoints, product/service development. This can be more useful than social media for marketing/promotion. Social Media is a cheap way of doing prototyping/development. Wisdom of the crowd can prevent strong individuals skewing the results.

Clients want to engage in product development. They don’t necessary want marketing or press releases.

Facebook is becoming useless for business. Perhaps good for maintaining existing traffic, but bad at finding new people. Vast majority of Facebook groups run by businesses have few followers or are very inactive.

Facebook is still the biggest photo-sharing site online. MySpace still seems effective for bands.

Was the death knell of Facebook when they introduced chat? Facebook was about asynchronous communication - posting on walls, commenting, etc. With chat, this skews the interaction.

Is identica an alternative for companies? - it perhaps allows them to maintain ownership of their space.

So, Why does SMC have a bad name?

Because if you’re doing it effectively your work speaks for itself? Surely good entrepreneurs don’t like to be called entrepreneurs, but instead CEOs, managers, etc.

Social Media Consultancy has been “owned” by people who are jumping bandwagons…

There are Social Media douche-bags, and we need an industry to poke fun at.

This is definitely damaging. The Industry as a whole is being tarred by some inexpert practitioners. Also, douchebags can lead naive companies into doing stuff that seriously backfires. This can undermine the industry as a whole.

How do we disassociate ourselves from the douche-bags?

Vast majority of social media people are marketeers, and it’s dumb to use social media soley as a marketing space.

We can ignore them, or we can have a good laugh at them.

Real damage can be done by the douche bags.

Social media isn’t actually a big deal, if you’ve got some experience yourself - perhaps? - so consultancy is by definition aimed at people who aren’t in the know.

Some new groups may well jump straight from no website to using social media (without buildng up through a website). Progression isn’t always linear.

Small organisations (84% who are 2-3 people) don’t have resources to protect their online brands, and really need good Social Media advice - its not something they have capacity for in-house.

How to solve?

Not a formal trade association.

Improving networks for referral.

Ideally Business Link and similar, but they’re awful at recommendations.

Big companies can have official supplier lists which can make it really hard to jump in front of the douche-bags. Some people can work around this kind of bureaucracy, but not many.

Not just a social media problem. A general problem at finding experts.

We’re not sure if there’s an easy answer…

Word of mouth / referral seems the strongest way of getting work.

We all need to be working hard to validate and demonstrate the quality in our industry.

Emma Persky: Social Media Consultancy - the trade that dare not speak its name

Mark Gibbens on "Ryan McDonough: The future of netbook operating systems"

Ryan is involved in Cookie Linux - based on Ubuntu with lots of work done on the kernel to get all the hardware supported.

Many manufacturers are leaving it up to the consumer to choose their OS.

A lot of innovation is going on towards a distro with very fast boot times, and a perhaps a focus on offline client apps (due to patchy mobile coverage/wifi).

What’s a priority for people?

A lot of people prefer something they are familar with.

MS have worked hard to catch up and get Windows on more netbooks.

Windows 7 runs reasonably on a netbook

Problems with Linux include trying to get similar workflow - duplicating apps, etc.

Curry’s have been asking sales staff to sell Windows boxes, or sell Linux as though it’s exactly the same thing. This is obviously dumb - setting up false expectations, and disempowering the consumer.

A netbook is not really for much more than mobile apps. You can do serous work on it, but you woouldn’t want to for long.

Intel have been working on code that supports very efficient power usage by the Atom processor. Battery life is only going to increase dramatically.

At Cookie Linux a lot of work is going into the kernel. Would end users be interested in upgrading their kernel? Unlikely, unless the kernel is available as a .deb file, installable via synaptic.

Some Ubuntu netbook upgrades have knackered sound.

Three types of users-

school kids and students

people who own netbook like a “second car” to their main desktop or laptop.

developers and power-users.

There needs to be a focus on supporting the needs of group 1 and 2, and also the teachers of group 1.

A lot of schools are handing out netbooks to people who don’t have them, giving them the netbook at the point where they’re written off.

Has there been any research on how durable netbooks are? particularly in schools? Solid-state drives have proved very durable - need to run them for 3 years, 24/7 to wear out. So far, netbooks seem robust enough.

Netbooks can be viewed as disposable. Is this an issue? Are netbooks likely to accelerate the electronic waste problem. The other thing (perhaps the more important thing) about disposability is that if they get pinched, they’re cheaper, so less of a loss.

GPSs for netbooks? (security) And you can get a chip installed so that the police can track it. Would encrypting the whole hard-drive help? Ubuntu’s ecrypted home directory, for example.

Is cloud software the way to go? No! connectivity isn’t perfect - no connection, you’re in trouble. Drop box is a good alternative. One big issue with cloud based stuff is limited upload speed. In future, perhaps ISPs need to equalises download/upload speeds as more people work in the cloud.
Ryan McDonough: The future of netbook operating systems

Does society expect you to have the degree before you can do a job in the industry?

It is possible to learn many of the skills of computer science from other places.

Its a useful qualification to demonstrate your skills to employers.

Many developers teach themselves to programme before taking on a computer science degree.

One former maths student’s experience: very rarely asked to do a task (software development) that he could not have done when he was 14, before he went to university.

Its about learning the skills to learn, not necessarily how to code in Java, but how to learn any language.

Examples of people with no formal computer science education getting jobs in the industry after building a portfolio of work and teaching themselves to program.

Much of the benefit in doing the computer science degree comes from being at university four years allowing you to make connections with others interested in the subject.

The degree is useful for explaining the high level concepts behind languages.

University courses force you to work in groups to develop the workplace communication skills you will eventually need.

Takes a long time to see where the value points were in your degree.
David King: Is a Computer Science Degree Worthless?

Richard King on "Jay Cousins: Open Business"

Introduction:

Open Business - crowdsourcing an entire business. Developing, promoting, distributing and selling a product through crowdsourcing. How do we set up an “open company” or federation? Goal-oriented network.

Trends emerging on the web with respect to product hacking. People are taking products that already exist and “reappropriating” or repurposing them. People are also developping FLOSS software. Want to create a business model around this - making services and products happen from the community. Tap into the crowd of knowledgeable hobbyists and designers. People who have part of the skill-set required to bring a product to market but not the whole set of skills. Untapped potential.

Examples:

Instructables.com

etsy.com

hack spaco

Bitch and stitch

Geek up

Bar camp

Issues:

What motivates people: identify correct drivers to motivate people.

How do you do project management of volunteers.

Momentum / speed: volunteers and free time - maintaining momentum.

commercialisation

Evolution

Critical mass - location specific critical mass

Customer expectation (customer created expectation)

Ideas / solutions

Open brand - people associate brands with their experience expectation. E.g. many ppl have an expectation of what happens at a barcamp despite the fact that they started off as unstructured events. Who do you allow access to your brand? Reputation maintenance. Management.

Shared resources - marketing resources, provision of services and goods. Can generate revenue from providing services to shared environments. Providing access to the market.

Clarity of focus and tasks: briefs. Define tasks down to the level where people can autonomously understand what you want to achieve and let them find solutions. Requirements management and business analysis.

Leadership and vision. Make it as easy as possible for the meme to spread. Create on- and off-line focus points around which things can be made to happen.

Discussion:

People talking about network businesses. A person is at the centre of a network of associates that work together to collaborate on projects under a particular brand. Many-to-many mappings between individuals and brands. Different way of organising your working life than traditional freelancing, which is 1-to-1 mapping between individual and brand (if any).

Attempting to remove reliance on centralised distribution and marketing channels.

How can open values be sustained? GPL-style licensing of products. No patents. Creative Commons etc? Difficult to commercialise as nobody owns the product - not even the company selling it. Open-source hardware licenses are still evolving. One difficulty is that hardware costs money to reproduce whereas software doesn’t.

Value in intellectual property is for investors. Also value in brands. There is no such thing as a “Creative patent” or “Creative trademark” to match “Creative Commons” for copyright. Branding commons don’t really exist yet.

How many things need to be reinvented for this to work? Need to map legal, commercial, financial, social conventions and how they need to be changed to make this happen.

The value of this organisation is contained within its methodologies and business processes. Also the strength of the brand - the reputation and the relationships that you build up.

Pilot project would be a good way of exploring how to proceed. Pick one that looks like it’ll cover most of the areas you want to explore and has some kind of intrinsic interest. Build from there. There’s no example of a successful large, complex system that didn’t evolve from a small, simple system!

BugLabs

Core element wrt commercialisation is the market layers and the interfaces between the consumers and the producers. Provide a focal point between these two layers and broker deals - charge a fee for this.

Starter: is it possible to develop a product in an open source and shared way with distributed development? Answer: yes. How is this going to be different to how it’s been done in the past. How to distinguish this market / service / company from what currently exists?

Potential in empowering people to contribute and do things that they wouldn’t otherwise have done: facilitates new market resources.

Documentation is going to be a key issue. Clarity of process for each role is required to maintain consistency and enable interoperability between business process steps.

Government strategy that ties in with this:

Lots of money in the last budget put aside to foster connections within certain industries: technology strategy board is tasked with deciding which areas of UK industry are worthy of support and how to do that. They create Knowledge Transfer Networks. Bring together people from unis, businesses, entrepreneurs etc. 80% of this cash goes to the “usual suspects” and it doesn’t trickle down very well. Large organisations are constrained in what information they give out about product development.

New website being developed to enable communication between companies in a secure way that enables people to know what will happen to the information they share, such that they are encouraged to share info and transfer knowledge. Publicise the available funding and distribute it more widely.

System allows groups to be created and for people to join groups. Need to encourage more people and organisations, schools, companies, individuals etc should be encouraged to join this system and exchange ideas. Enables discovery of people who can help you put together a network to support a business process.

This launches into private beta in October. Expected final launch in March next year.
Jay Cousins: Open Business

Digital Britain Report

The BBC could do some really interesting things for Digital Britain. What should they be doing?

Universities should be encouraging graduates to make connections before leaving and not focusing on grades. Should the government be helping graduates with start-ups?

Does unsheffield bring together communities not involved in Digital Britain?

Rural areas getting high speed broadband. If you don’t live in a city should you have to move to set up a digital business?

Another thought: safe stopping distance between your car and the one in front is partially dependent on how much distance the car behind has left between your car and it. You both need to be able to stop in the clear distance in front of your car.

If this gadget has both front and rear sensors it can tell you when you need to leave more space in front of you to account for the car behind driving too close to you.

Mark Gibbens on "Social Media Consultancy - the trade that dare not speak its name: Emma Persley"

Social Media Consultants can't say they exist because people get upset. But if there weren't any, there wouldn't be any social media. Discuss!

SMCs go into an organisation and look at how they're using technology.

They don't necessary want marketing or press releases.

* Because if you're doing it effectively your work speaks for itself? Surely good entrepreneurs don't like to be called entrepreneurs, but instead CEOs, managers, etc.
* Social Media Consultancy has been "owned" by people who are jumping bandwagons...
* There are Social Media douche-bags, and we need an industry to poke fun at.

This is definitely damaging. The Industry as a whole is being tarred by some inexpert practitioners. Also, douchebags can lead naive companies into doing stuff that seriously backfires. This can undermine the industry as a whole.

How do we disassociate ourselves from the douche-bags?

Vast majority of social media people are marketeers, and it's dumb to use social media soley as a marketing space.

We can ignore them, or we can have a good laugh at them.

Real damage can be done by the douche bags.

Social media isn't actually a big deal, if you've got some experience yourself - perhaps? - so consultancy is by definition aimed at people who aren't in the know.

Some new groups may well jump straight from no website to using social media (without buildng up through a website). Progression isn't always linear.

Small organisations (84% who are 2-3 people) don't have resources to protect their online brands, and really need good Social Media advice - its not something they have capacity for in-house.

How to solve?

* Not a formal trade association.
* Improving networks for referral.
* Ideally Business Link and similar, but they're awful at recommendations
* Big companies can have official supplier lists which can make it really hard to jump in front of the douche-bags. Some people can work around this kind of bureaucracy, but not many.
* Not just a social media problem. A general problem at finding experts.
* We're not sure if there's an easy answer...
* Word of mouth / referral seems the strongest way of getting work.
* We all need to be working hard to validate and demonstrate the quality in our industry.

Mark Gibbens on "The future of netbook operating systems: Ryan McDonough"

Ryan is involved in Cookie Linux - based on Ubuntu with lots of work done on the kernel to get all the hardware supported.

Many manufacturers are leaving it up to the consumer to choose their OS.

A lot of innovation is going on towards a distro with very fast boot times, and a perhaps a focus on offline client apps (due to patchy mobile coverage/wifi).

What's a priority for people?
* A lot of people prefer something they are familar with.
* MS have worked hard to catch up and get Windows on more netbooks.
* Windows 7 runs reasonably on a netbook

Problems with Linux include
* trying to get similar workflow - duplicating apps, etc.

Curry's have been asking sales staff to sell Windows boxes, or sell Linux as though it's exactly the same thing. This is obviously dumb - setting up false expectations, and disempowering the consumer.

A netbook is not really for much more than mobile apps. You can do serous work on it, but you woouldn't want to for long.

Three types of users-
1 school kids and students
2 people who own netbook like a "second car" to their main desktop or laptop.
3 developers and power-users.
There needs to be a focus on supporting the needs of group 1 and 2, and also the teachers of group 1.

A lot of schools are handing out netbooks to people who don't have them, giving them the netbook at the point where they're written off.

The other thing (perhaps the more important thing) about disposability is that if they get pinched, they're cheaper, so less of a loss.

GPSs for netbooks? (security) And you can get a chip installed so that the police can track it. Would encrypting the whole hard-drive help? Ubuntu's ecrypted home directory, for example.

Is cloud software the way to go? No! connectivity isn't perfect - no connection, you're in trouble. Drop box is a good alternative. One big issue with cloud based stuff is limited upload speed. In future, perhaps ISPs need to equalises download/upload speeds as more people work in the cloud.
