Tom Cruise 'Physically Assaulted' Ex-Scientology Spokesperson, Alleges Former OSA Director

WWP[cache recovery] One of Scientology‘s former kingpins has challenged the son of actress Anne Archer, the church’s ex-spokesperson, to spill what he knows about the shadowy world inside the super-secret organization and detail its ties to ultimate poster child Tom Cruise.

Mike Rinder, one of the highest profile defectors in Scientology history, said Tommy Davis and his wife Jessica — who both recently quit the church — are sitting on stories “that would shock the world and expose more of the dark underbelly of Dave [ Miscavige, Scientology's leader ] and Tom Cruise’s world.”

One of those, Rinder claimed, was an alleged physical assault that Tommy once suffered at the hands of the Top Gun star.

“They left a trail of destruction in their wake and witnessed a lot of things they know hurt people or were just plain wrong,” wrote Rinder — who “blew” the organization (Scientology speak for an unauthorized departure) in 2006 after 34 years — on his personal website.

“The Tommy/Jessica (Tomica) story is darker than most realize. I wouldn’t doubt that if anything keeps David Miscavige up at night it’s the thought of Tomica growing a conscience.”

Rinder, who was the church’s former chief spokesman and executive director of its Office of Special Affairs, hinted at some of the secret goings on inside the walls of the world’s most controversial religion.

He claimed Davis personally worked for Cruise, who &bullturned 51 on Wednesday.

He was “subservient” to the three-time Oscar nominee, Rinder said, as was the entire Sea Org, or Sea Organization, the body within the Church whose members wear maritime uniforms. The Sea Org, Rinder alleged, was available to cater to Cruise’s every need.

“Tommy told me he was physically assaulted by Tom (“I deserved it”) who followed in the footsteps of his mentor Dave,” he added.

“Tommy was subservient to ‘Mr. Cruise’ as was everyone else in the Sea Org.

“Tommy had to divorce his wife Nadine because she became persona non grata in the Cruise household.

“Tomica were also the ones who dealt with anyone who offended or upset ‘Mr. Cruise’ or Katie – including getting people fired, hauled in for extensive sec checking and ethics programs for even minor problems.

“Jessica was of course Katie’s Holmes’ auditor and BFF. That didn’t turn out too well.”

Rinder also alleged the church coordinated a “chance” meeting between and Nazanin Boniadi, the unknown actress who was reportedly selected by Scientology as a candidate to be Cruise’s real-life girlfriend, in the wake of the star’s 2004 split with Penelope Cruz.

Said Rinder: “Tommy was directly involved in the ‘girlfriend’ search mission to find a mate for Cruise. In fact, he and Greg Wilhere were the ones that arranged the ‘chance’ meeting of Nazanin Boniadi with Cruise in New York.”

According to Scientology watcher and investigate journalist Tony Ortega, Davis and his wife have moved to Austin, Texas, where she’s working a realtor and he as managing director of one of the largest private equity real estate funds in the world.

“At some point — perhaps early in 2011 — they apparently fell from favor, as high executives working for Scientology leader David Miscavige have a tendency to do,” Ortega reported in June.

“Davis and Feshbach went off the radar at that point… when the two of them were removed from Scientology’s media relations page. At the time, we heard that the reason the two had vanished was that Jessica was gravely ill. It turns out, that wasn’t true.

“Jessica wasn’t ill and she has told friends that she doesn’t know how that rumor got started.”

Wring about the Davis’, Rinder questioned: “Why aren’t Tomica speaking out about the abuses they witnessed or participated in?

“Perhaps Tomica are frightened by that non-existent “disconnection” policy that Tommy was so adamant about?

“Or perhaps its just that they are simply too content with their cushy lifestyle to be concerned about the well-being of the ‘little people’ who continue to suffer hardships, injustices and broken families. And those who are still trying to recover from their less than pleasant interactions with Tomica.”

The church has long dismissed whistleblower Rinder, labeling him as a bitter former employee who was removed from his senior post for “gross malfeasance.”

“For many years, Tommy was in the ‘President’s Office’ in CC Int [Scientology Celebrity Centre International]. His almost exclusive job was to cater to Tom Cruise and to provide whatever Miscavige directed him to do for his pal while constantly reporting back on what was going on in the Cruise world,” Rinder wrote.

In the role, Davis allegedly fired people for Cruise and his ex-wife, Katie Holmes, then ordered them to be “sec checked” — a form of interrogation where a subject holds an e-meter and is asked a series of personal questions that help the church locate “areas of spiritual distress” — in other words, uncover someone’s inner-most secrets.

Internal Narconon Email: No Scientific Basis for Advertised Success Rates

Ortega Underground [APR.01.13] Former Narconon employee Eric Tenorio has turned over to the Underground Bunker a remarkable e-mail written by a Narconon International legal affairs officer who admits that “we do not have scientific evidence of” the 70 percent and higher rates of success that the rehab programs advertise.

In 2009, Tenorio was working at Narconon Freedom Treatment Center in Albion, Michigan when the facility became the subject of a Better Business Bureau complaint. As the center prepared a response to the complaint, Tenorio was one of several executives at the center who received copies of e-mails going back and forth between Freedom Center and Narconon International, the non-profit that oversees all Narconon facilities. (Narconon International in turn reports to the Association for Better Living and Education, which is staffed only by Scientology “Sea Org” officials.)

In the draft of its response to the BBB, Freedom Center’s officials referred to the 70 percent success rate that all Narconon centers advertise (some push it even higher — some ads have been seen with claims of up to 90 percent success).

Note, these success rates are completely out of scale with more legitimate rehab programs, which typically advertise success rates closer to 25 percent.

Tenorio says that the Freedom Center’s draft response was shown to Claudia Arcabascio, Narconon International’s Legal Affairs Director.

Underground Bunker [MAR.21.13] ~ Scientology’s troubled flagship drug rehab facility in Oklahoma — Narconon Arrowhead — was hit with five additional lawsuits today, all filed by Gary Richardson, the attorney who is handling four other wrongful death and fraud suits against the center.

Three deaths at the facility in nine months (the last in July 2012) has resulted in local and state investigations, the Oklahoma legislature is this week considering a new bill to tighten regulation of the facility, and earlier this month Narconon Arrowhead’s CEO, Gary Smith, had his drug counselor certification permanently revoked.

And today, Gary Richardson filed five additional lawsuits against the facility, each of which is alleging that Narconon is a fraudulent business that advertises bogus success rates. Lawsuits allege Narconon Arrowhead counselors traded sex for drugs

mcalesternews.com [MAR.22.13] ~ Narconon Arrowhead counselors allegedly traded drugs for sex and fraudulently charged a patients credit card some $14,500 according to allegations found in five lawsuits filed Thursday against the facility.

The lawsuits were filed Thursday in Pittsburg County District Court.

"I couldn't begin to tell you the stories I've heard of what goes on down there," said attorney, Gary Richardson. And Richardson says he's heard plenty of them. "They say 76 percent success rate, when there is no way, and when they get into the way they calculate that, then you get to see how ridiculous that is," Richardson said.

Richardson represents families of Narconon's three most recent deaths. All three filed wrongful death lawsuits against the Narconon Arrowhead rehab facility near McAlester. The families blame the staff. "It was joke to even think they had counselors to begin with. tonyortega.org [MAR.11.13] Some remarkable documents hit the Internet yesterday. They appear to be actual scripts used by employees who answer the phone numbers listed at drug rehab information websites with generic-sounding names.

The websites claim to deliver impartial advice about drug rehabilitation programs, but many of them are in fact front operations for Scientology’s rehab network, Narconon. According to the scripts — as well as confirmation by several former employees — the people who answer these phone calls are instructed to do everything they can to convince a family to send a potential patient to a Narconon center (and they earn a large bounty for doing so).

It’s the first step in Narconon’s deceptive business model, which has come under intense scrutiny in the past year because of deaths at centers in Oklahoma and Georgia. Before patients arrive at the centers, however, they must be convinced to go there. And that’s where these scripts come in.

Researcher Mary McConnell obtained the scripts from a source inside the Southern California Narconon network — known as “Narconon Fresh Start” — and posted them to a Scribd account and to the Reaching for the Tipping Point Forum, which keeps a close eye on Scientology’s drug rehab program.

While it’s not unusual for businesses to provide scripts to their telephone operators, particularly in telemarketing firms, the Narconon scripts are remarkable for how plainly they spell out Scientology’s total influence over the process and the deceptive methods used to answer the questions of callers. Karla Taylor, president of NAFC, confirmed Narconon Arrowhead CEO Gary Smith’s certification and those of several Narconon employees was revoked earlier this month.

Another Lawsuit Filed Against Scientology's Narconon-Arrowhead

mcalesternews.com [NOV.26.12] A lawsuit was filed today against Narconon Arrowhead by a man who suffered from the same disease as a woman who was found dead at the facility earlier this year.

The suit was filed in Pittsburg County District Court by 21-year-old William Scott a former patient of the facility who has a medical condition called from Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, which requires daily medication, according to the lawsuit.

The condition is also the same that of 21-year-old Hillary Holten who was found dead at the facility in April.

Named as defendants in the lawsuit are Narconon of Oklahoma doing business as Narconon Arrowhead, an Oklahoma corporation; Narconon International, a foreign corporation based in California; Association for Better Living and Education International, a foreign corporation based in California; and Gerald D. wtsp.com [NOV.16.12] The allegations are coming from the former number-two man in the Scientology organization, and involve what he says is a multi-million dollar cover up of the death of a woman in Scientology care.

The woman at the center of it all is Lisa McPherson, who died in 1995 after being involved in a minor traffic accident.

Marty Rathbun, the former number-two man in Scientology, alleges that the organization showered gifts on the Medical Examiner's attorney, Jeff Goodis, to influence her to change the cause of death. Once that happened, the criminal case fell apart.

In addition, Rathbun says the Church hired another attorney, former prosecutor Lee Fugate, to have illegal Ex parte meetings with judges involved in the case.

Rathbun says,"Listen. Lee Fugate, his value was to schmooze. As a matter of fact, that's what David Miscavige and myself used to say. Let's get lee to schmooze; let's get Lee to schmooze."

In the suit, Rathbun contends the Church of Scientology spent at least $30 million to get the charges dropped, and mitigates the damages in the civil suit.

Jeff Goodis denies the charges and Attorney Lee Fugate says he can't comment on a federal suit, but it would be shocking to believe that some of Pinellas' top judges could be involved in illegal activity like this.

However Ken Dandar, the attorney who represented McPherson's family against the church, says, "Maybe Mr. Rathbun doesn't know what he is talking about, and maybe it's all his imagination. I don't think so..."

Dandar says the organization has come after him. He's says attorney Wally Pope and Judge Robert Beach have illegally claimed the settlement papers in the McPherson case.

Dandar adds," If what I've been told is correct, I will go after the people who have corrupted the system, and I will go after the members of the system that have been corrupted."

xenutv.com ~ Lisa was a devoted Scientologist for many years. In late 1995, she indicated to family and friends that she would be coming home to Texas. She never made it home. Instead, Lisa spent her last days confined in Scientology’s Fort Harrison Hotel.

During those 17 days, Lisa was undergoing a psychotic breakdown while under constant guard by Scientology staffers who tried to handle her with Hubbard policies. By the time they rushed her to a hospital it was too late. She had lost 40 pounds and was severely dehydrated. Lisa was pronounced dead on arrival.

Lisa's case is a good representation of the many people harmed or even killed by Scientology. Her case is well documented from court proceedings, Scientology documents, and good reporting. It's also a case that DM [David Miscavige] himself had a direct hand in, according to Marty Rathbun.

DeKalb County State Court Judge Stacey Hydrick issued sanctions against Narconon of Georgia, finding the program's director lied under oath and hid evidence. "There's really nothing else that a judge can do that's stronger than what the judge has done here," said attorney Jeff Harris. Harris is representing the family of Patrick Desmond, who died in 2008 after trying heroin for the first time.

During our investigation, we even caught Narconon's parent organization, Narconon International, advertising the program as residential on its website. The Desmonds say the Georgia program director, Mary Rieser, lied to them. In September, Rieser disputed that saying, "I will never knowingly accept somebody here if I know they've been ordered inpatient, because we're not." But Judge Hydrick's ruling says in hearings, Rieser's "responses were patently false, that Narconon of Georgia "repeatedly and willfully obstructed the discovery process," and even "falsely denied the existence of clearly relevant, responsive documents and information."

DeKalb judge strikes answer by Scientology-linked rehab

dailyreportonline.com ~ A DeKalb County judge has struck the answer of a Church of Scientology-linked drug rehab program that's being sued for the heroin overdose death of a man while he was in treatment.

State Court Judge Stacey Hydrick on Monday issued the heavy sanction on Narconon of Georgia, saying the defendant "provided false, misleading written discovery responses and deposition testimony" in response to requests for evidence about claims that the rehab center ran an unsafe and unlicensed facility.

The punishment means that allegations contained in the complaint will be deemed to be true when the case goes to trial in February, said plaintiffs attorney Jeffrey Harris.
Harris said Narconon's discovery abuse was "so pervasive and so bad."
"I'm confident there remain documents out there that we still haven't gotten," said Harris, of Harris Penn Lowry Delcampo. "Some of them I know are missing because the documents we have talk about them. The documents we do have make it clear that there are other documents that have not been produced." Now, Judge Stacey Hydrick has come down hard on Rieser in the strongest terms for holding back evidence in the case that Desmond’s family was entitled to.

“The Court finds that [Narconon Georgia] repeatedly and willfully obstructed the discovery process both by failures to respond fully to legitimate discovery requests and, even more egregiously, by false responses,” Hydrick states in a sanctions order she signed Monday. [more@ortegaunderground]

Judge Imposes Sanctions on Norcross Drug Treatment Facility

Atlanta Journal-Constitution ~ In a rare move, a DeKalb County state judge has withdrawn a Norcross drug treatment facility’s response to allegations in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by a former patient’s parents.

Judge Stacey K. Hydrick said in a court order Nov. 5 that Narconon of Georgia “intentionally, willfully and repeatedly provided false and misleading responses to plaintiff’s discovery requests regarding issues relevant to the resolution of this case.”

Narconon “repeatedly failed to produce, and on multiple occasions falsely denied the existence of clearly relevant, responsive documents and information,” Hydrick wrote.
As a result, the allegations against Narconon will essentially go unanswered, which will be to the suing parents’ advantage.
“This judicial order is as sharply worded rebuke of a party as one is likely to see in American courts,” said University of Georgia law professor Ron Carlson, calling the sanctions “very uncommon.” [continued@Atlanta Journal-Constitution]

Narconon facility located in Caliente, Nevada

Narconon, an unlicensed rehabilitation center in Caliente, Nev., is connected to the Church of Scientology, but many parents sending their children there claim they were never told that.
The I-Team has been investigating Narconon for nearly three years. The center is about 100 miles northeast of Las Vegas in Lincoln County. It's rarely inspected and is isolated from the outside world.

Justin Vandergriend, an opiate addict, went into therapy, paid for by his parents for a sum of $35,000.
He described the therapy he received as not conventional. "Talking to walls, sitting two inches from somebody in a chair, looking them eye to eye," Vandergriend said, describing his therapy. "Almost as if you're trying to steal their soul and if you were to move, flinch, act irritated whatsoever, they would throw you out and put you back in for a new two hours."

The Vandergriend family and many others talking to the I-Team said nobody told them Narconon was connected to Scientology and said they have no doubts why Justin relapsed after attending Narconon.
"They don't even have a certified doctor, a certified nurse," said Justin Vandergriend's father, Dave. "They don't have anybody."

The I-Team checked state databases and found that none of the Narconon employees identified had any Nevada medical licenses or certification for drug counseling or rehab services.

The individuals on the list have publicly spoken out under their real names against the abuses witnessed or experienced first-hand within the Church of Scientology, despite being subjected to intimidation and threats for doing so, under Scientology's "Fair Game" and "Disconnection" policies.

Although the Church of Scientology publicly denies that these policies exist, there are first-person accounts in the news that these intimidation tactics are actively applied to this day. Most former members do not dare to publicly criticize the organization, largely because of thesis policies.

The extensiveness of this list demonstrates that there is a significant problem with the Church of Scientology, and counters all their claims in the media that so-called "disgruntled ex-members" or "apostates" are a "small group" or few in number.

3rd Lawsuit Filed Against Scientology's Narconon-Arrowhead in Oklahoma

newsok.com [OCT.25.12] The mother of a Tulsa County man who died while undergoing drug rehabilitation treatment at Narconon Arrowhead in Pittsburg County has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the corporation. The latest lawsuit was filed Wednesday in Pittsburg County District Court by Shirley Gilliam, the mother of Gabriel Graves, 32.

Graves was found dead in his bed at Narconon Arrowhead on Oct. 26, 2011.
Gilliam says that Narconon Arrowhead treatments rely on the written “technology” of L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Church of Scientology, “despite the fact that Hubbard had no known training or education in the field of drug or alcohol rehabilitation.”

During Graves' stay at Narconon Arrowhead, he “repeatedly evidenced symptoms of feeling ill, headaches and vomiting,” but was never referred to a physician, Gilliam alleges.
Graves was found dead the day after he complained of a terrible headache following sauna treatments, the lawsuit says.

Graves asked for over-the-counter pain relief and permission to see a physician, but was denied both and advised to return to the sauna, the lawsuit alleges.
Gerald D. Wootan, a Tulsa County osteopathic physician and Narconon of Oklahoma's medical director, also is named as a defendant in the lawsuit.
Gilliam alleges Wootan failed to adequately monitor the treatment of patients, including the use of high doses of niacin.

The Sun reporter was able to wander in unchallenged for a peek into the cult's mysterious world. Also, the reporter heard the bizarre declarations of David Miscavige — including his insistence that the Holocaust was started not by Nazis but by SHRINKS.

Then we are greeted by the great man himself, Tom Cruise’s buddy and the sect’s global leader — David Miscavige. He is given a rock star welcome, but delivers an oddly emotionless speech.
From the start we are bombarded with information. There are flashing lights, booming sound effects, and statistic after statistic, some hard to believe.

He boasts about it rescuing thousands of addicts, although what they’re addicted to is not made clear.
He uses odd terminology at one point, saying Scientology is responsible for “disseminating peace”.
For two hours, Miscavige bangs on about the evils of psychiatry, claiming it is out to drug our kids for money. He declares: “Psychiatry has no scientific grounding.[continued@TheSun]

The demonstration, which has been described on one internet forum as a "mega raid", has been planned by the group Ex-Scientologists UK and coincides with the International Association of Scientologists' anniversary weekend at its UK base at Saint Hill Manor.

Up to 8,000 Scientologists are expected to attend the annual Saint Hill gala, which will highlight the organisation's humanitarian work over the last year – but, as guests arrive, protesters hope to spread their anti-Scientology message.

The details are a bit incomplete, but his mother said he had entered Narconon for an alcohol addiction, and after finishing the program, he completed a training program in April to become a Narconon counselor so he could help others. But then suddenly he ended contact with friends and his family and his mother filed a missing person report.

I tried to convince him to go to another facility for help this time. When Narconon took him on as a staff member he was not paid much but in return they did provide him with housing. the same housing he was staying in as a patient. If he left Narconon he would be out of a home and a job.

I could not convince him to leave Narconon. He really thought that they had his best interest in mind. When we last spoke on August 11,2012 he said he was going to talk to one of the counselors and they would know what to do. 24 hours later his body was found by police.

• Unidentified Body Found
[examiner.com] [AUG.13.12] Someone called to report a suspicious person either dead or sleeping behind a Norcross business early Monday morning. What police found was man who may have been murdered.

But with no cause of death, victim identity or witness, they had very little to go on.
The call came in around 2:30 a.m. after someone spotted the man behind the business at 25 South Technology Pkwy., according to Gwinnett County police.

“When officers arrived on scene they discovered a male deceased with several head injuries from an unknown origin,” police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter said.
It's unclear how long the man has been dead and whether he died in that location.
The man did not have in his possession any identification or any artifacts leading to his identity, Cpl. Ritter said.

[examiner.com] [AUG.24.12] Police have identified the body of a man found dead behind a business in the city of Peachtree Corners. But weeks later, the cause of his death remains a mystery. Gwinnett County police said the man has been identified as Mr. Ronald Corona, originally of Pennsylvania.
But they said the 39-year-old has been living in the Gwinnett area since November 2011.

[ajc.com] [OCT.15.12] A man found dead in a Gwinnett County office park died from using cocaine, the county’s medical examiner’s office said Monday.
Ronald Corona Jr., 39, was found around 2:30 a.m. Aug. 13 on Technology Parkway South in Peachtree Corners. Gwinnett officer were dispatched to the area following a report of a suspicious person “sleeping or possibly dead” behind a business.
Officers located Corona’s body, but could not immediately identify him. Investigators released pictures of Corona’s tattoos in order to learn his name.
Originally from Pennsylvania, Corona had been living in the Gwinnett area since November, police said.

The Narconon Georgia Board of Director’s vicious and outrages claims that “anonymous” is a “hate group”, is without merit and nothing more than a 1970s, Hubbard policy of "attacking the attacker" and assigned a term to it that is used frequently within Scientology as "dead agenting.” [cont@examiner.com]

"Not Owned By Scientologist" Leads To Clearwater Business Coalition [video]

clearwater.patch [OCT.11.12] Travis Wilkinson's first sign is just a warm up. Wilkinson, a Southern Baptist, said it's "hurtful" that people think he's a Scientologist and that customers often think his business is associated with the church simply because it's located downtown.

He is the owner of Berry Beautiful Salon and Spa, and he placed a sign in front of his business stating “Notice: this is one of the only spas in downtown Clearwater not owned by a Scientologist" in September.

Clearwater Small Business Coalition

Because of the support he has seen from the community since putting the sign up he is creating the Clearwater Small Business Coalition, which will offer members similar signs to place in front of their businesses.
He said there are about 15 businesses interested in joining him. But they are waiting for at least another 15 members before they put the signs out, Wilkinson added [continued@clearwater.patch]

ABC: Sign states 'This is one of the only spas in downtown Clearwater not owned by a Scientologist'

Dead Patient's Father Narconon Shocked by Scientology Belief

krmg.com [OCT.10.12] Father whose daughter died of an apparent drug overdose while at a drug treatment facility says he wants the place fixed or shut down and he wants the world to know about its roots in the Church of Scientology and what that organization's beliefs entail.

"You believe they have a 24-hour physician in the building and all these nurses in the building, (that's) what you hear when they say they have a 24-hour staff. Well in actuality they have'em on staff, but they're not in the premises," he says.

Murphy's death is listed as "unattended," which would back up Robert Murphy's contention that his daughter was left in a room alone where she passed away from what appears to have been a drug overdose.

The "on staff" medical personnel were apparently never notified.
"They had her for ten-plus hours where they knew she was in an OD (overdose) situation and nobody did anything. No monitoring of her, no physician was called, no 911, didn't call her parents, nothing. Just put her in a room and left her to die," he told KRMG.

Now, he says, he has a much darker opinion of Scientology and how he believes the "church" uses Narconon to gain followers and their money. "My opinion, it's a scam. It's just a way to draw money in and make you pay to achieve higher levels of their 'consciousness,' of their 'past lives.'"

Thirty 911 Calls from Narconon Arrowhead in One Year

examiner.com [OCT.10.12] Shocking information was received today from Oklahoma concerning 911 calls for emergency help by Narconon Arrowhead patients and staff. Documents confirm the sheriff’s office responding to patients being held against their will at the Scientology rehab compound in Canadian, Oklahoma.

In some cases, the officers intervened by entering the center and waiting with distraught patients until their parents or sponsor could safely pick them up without interference from Narconon Arrowhead’s staff.

Billing itself as an alternative to traditional treatments, Narconon is based on teachings from the Church of Scientology and has been in trouble already with state regulators. In fact, based on our reporting, the Department of Community Health reopened its investigation of Narconon. Testimony and other evidence in the case point to blurry lines between Narconon and housing where almost all of its clients stayed.

Drug Facility Under New Scrutiny
ajc.com [OCT.07.12] In a 2008 email obtained in evidence for the lawsuit, Rieser wrote to a Scientology-sponsored organization that Narconon representatives “sell the program and housing too.”
Former Narconon of Georgia legal liaison Allison Riepe said in her deposition that, at Rieser’s instructions, she doctored letterheads to remove mention of “outpatient drug treatment program” in correspondence with drug courts and probation officers.

When Patrick Desmond died, he and other Narconon clients were living in a complex where Scientologist Maria Delgado leased housing. She testified that she leased a dozen apartments for $850 to $950 a month each, then housed four addicts to an apartment at a charge to each of $1,500 to $1,700 a month. The upcharges included money for their meals and utilities, she testified.

Other testimony shows some Narconon employees also worked and lived at the apartment complex, and Narconon provided the van to transport clients from the housing to wherever they needed to go.
State records also show that in March, 21 of 28 Narconon clients told a state investigator they believed they enrolled in residential care.
In an interview, Rieser said not to trust the addicts’ statements. “These are not the most truthful people here,” she said. [continued@ajc.com]

Susan Muhleman's life was turned upside down after she refused to go to the three-day training session for life skills run by the controversial religion because it clashed with her Christian beliefs.

Dr. Andrew W. Engel, who had posters of science fiction writer and Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard in his Bend, Oregon office, threatened to fire Muhleman if she didn't go with her co-workers. [continued@radaronline]

[ortegaunderground] Tony Ortega contacted Oregon’s Bureau of Labor and Industries, and they sent over the 69-page order in the case, which is chock-full of fascinating detail about what dental hygienist Susan Muhleman went through when she objected in 2009 to being pushed by Engel to attend a Silkin Management Group symposium that October which would have instructed attendees in Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard’s “Tone Scale” and other Scientology concepts.

As documents show, Muhleman had the presence of mind to do Internet research on Silkin, Hubbard’s tone scale, and Scientology’s incompatibility with her own faith, Christianity, before telling Engel that she refused to attend the symposium. Dentists, Consultants, Scientology, Oh-My!

Scientology’s business management front group, the World Institute of Scientology Enterprises, or WISE, tends to target dentists, chiropractors, and ophthalmologists for recruitment. Below are several stories on dentists that were introduced to Scientology via consulting companies and their experiences in attempting to leave.

Many dentists who have unwittingly been drawn into the cult are filing or threatening lawsuits as well. Dentist Robert Geary of Medina, Ohio, who entered a Sterling seminar in 1988, endured "the most extreme high-pressure sales tactics I have ever faced."

Sterling officials told Geary, 45, that their firm was not linked to Scientology, he says. but Geary claims they eventually convinced him that he and his wife Dorothy had personal problems that required auditing.
Over five months, the Gearys say, they spent $130,000 for services, plus $50,000 for "gold-embossed, investment-grade" books signed by Hubbard. Geary contends that Scientologists not only called his bank to increase his credit card limit but also forged his signature on a $20,000 loan application. "It was insane," he recalls. "I couldn't even get an accounting from them of what I was paying for."

At one point, the Gearys claim, Scientologists held Dorothy hostage for two weeks in a mountain cabin, after which she was hospitalized for a nervous breakdown.

Sterling broke some bad news to another dentist, Glover Rowe of Gadsden, Ala., and his wife Dee. Tests showed that unless they signed up for auditing Glover's practice would fail, and Dee would someday abuse their child.

The next month the Rowes flew to Glendale, Calif., where they shuttled daily from a local hotel to a Dianetics center.

"We thought they were brilliant people because they seemed to know so much about us," recalls Dee. "Then we realized our hotel room must have been bugged." After bolting from the center, $23,000 poorer, the Rowes say, they were chased repeatedly by Scientologists on foot and in cars.
