VillageVoice ~ On Saturday, Tommy Gorman (Scientology protester) found himself being charged by a large, angry Scientologist, Christopher Krzywicki, whose rather remarkable bull-rush was caught on video being filmed by Gorman's wife, Jennifer.

The man took several swings at him, Gorman says, and after reporting the incident to the police, he was told charges would be filed against the man.

VillageVoice ~ Australia's Bryan Seymour has produced some of that country's biggest scoops about Scientology in recent years, and he has a diverting item in this Today Tonight piece about Lana Mitchell, who helped to lavish gourmet meals on Scientology leader David Miscavige at the church's secretive desert headquarters in California -- until, that is, she was accused of feeding a bad shrimp to Tom Cruise, and as a result lost her job, lost her family, and lost her friends.

In her interview with Seymour, she explains that as Miscavige's cook, it was her job to lavish on the church leader gourmet meals every few hours, and especially when Miscavige's good friend Tom Cruise showed up. But when Cruise got food poisoning from a bad shrimp, Mitchell says she was unfairly blamed, and found herself cut off not only from her job, but also from her friends and family.[more]

The Narconon organization has been exposed to be a "Church" of Scientology front which is in no way connected with the real drug addiction treatment program called Narcotics Anonymous.

Anyone contemplating taking the Scientology organization's unscientific and risky "Purification Rundown" proceedure, or participating in any of the cult's other dangerous quack medicial proceedures needs to know the history of the Narconon front group, what courts have ruled about it, what newspapers have discovered and reported, and what the lack of scientific merits for the cult's proceedures mean to individuals who are trying to quit their addictions.

The goals of the Scientology cult would appear to be to use their fake front Narconon as a method of recruitment, preying upon people who are already known by the organization to have addictive personalities, and who are unaware of who actually runs Narconon.

wwp ~ In 2009, a DIANETICS only book store opened the Burbank Mall, California, under the name: Stress Solutions.
Well the bookstore that only sold one type of book (you need a whole store to sell one type of book?) went out of business as of Sept. 1st, 2010.
Solution to stress, indeed. Local Anons won't be worrying about the public being indoctrinated into the cult at this location anymore.

Berlin-Spandau, Germany

wwp ~ April 2009 Scientology shocked the people and the administration of Berlin-Spandau, when they opened a Scientology bookstore in the old city. It's reported this is what the place looks like now ,as of Sep. 2010: closed. Very, very, very closed. No more bookshop in Spandau. In view of the fact that this should have been the first shop in a long line of Scientology shops in Berlin, the way they were boasting.

Munich, Germany

wwp ~ Also in Germany, as of mid Sept 2010, Scientology's Munich Celebrity Centre is closing, but a nail salon is opening in it's place. Now the world can be cleared of unsightly kept cuticles and fingernails.

It's also reported that they were expanding so much, they had a high grand total of celebrity members of fifteen, and that was in 1995.

Even after Scientology's poster-boy's German movie, Valkyrie, finished filming in 1998, no local celebrities were convinced to join Tom's i can fly clubhouse.

Oslo, Norway
wwp ~ And back in July 2010, it seems the org in Oslo, Norway was abandoned. And, yes, Anonymous celebrated by flying their local cell flag out one of the now ex-scientolgy office windows.This was also predicted as long as 2 years ago.

Mountain View, California

wwp ~ December 2010, the “Dianetics & Scientology Life Improvement Information Center” prominently located on 331 Castro Street in downtown Mountain View California has closed.

This was a site for the original 2008 protests and was featured in many post raid photos and videos. The mostly gutted building has a large For Sale sign slapped on it. A few floor-standing posters and random chairs are all that remain inside the dark interior.

wwp ~ Also in Boston, MA, the former Ivory Bean building (that Scientology bought in 2008 to expand into) located at 1769 Washington Street, was cordoned off in early February after a neighbor reported bricks falling from the facade.

Firefighters warned that the wall was in danger of “imminent collapse,” and a structural engineer was called in to evaluate the property.

The city had previously notified the church of the building's condition, according to Paul Bradford, the Church’s Legal Administrator. But efforts to demolish the building sooner were delayed by the South End Landmarks District Commission, which reviews exterior renovations that take place within the neighborhood's historic district. styleweekly.com ~ More than two and a half years ago, the Church of Scientology opened a mission to some fanfare in Carytown. Now it is no longer.
Within the past week or so, the church’s sign was removed from the corner of Cary and Nansemond streets.
Though the mission closed several months ago, “Scientology is very much alive and well in the Richmond area,” the Rev. Susan Taylor, president of the Church of Scientology in Washington, wrote in an email Friday to Style Weekly.
Mat Pastore “is continuing to deliver services from his Dianetics Center in the Richmond area,” Taylor said. Taylor didn’t know where that local center was, she said, referring questions to Pastore. Reached Thursday, Pastore only would confirm the center’s closure and declined to comment further.

Portland, Oregon

Under the cover of darkness, two Scientology clones seen shuttering the Portland Org: WWP ~ "...I was walking around my neighborhood and witnessed the "routing out" of the org in my hood. Being the good neighbor that I am, I busted out the cell phone to snap some quick pictures. As I approached, they saw what I was doing and shouted "who are you!?", "why are you doing this!?" and "you're trespassing!" I remained silent and at a good distance.

They then both got in my face and physically forced me down the building stairs and into the street. But I sneaked around the side! And got some more shots. More to annoy them than anything else. They had no idea what to do with me. They had an audience as there is a restaurant next door and there was a crowd outside. I was cheered on by passers by.
I did tell them that I am an "SP" and asked how long they'd been on the RPF. That was fun indeed.
The dude in the tie can be seen inside, looking really pissed and furiously making phone calls to obtain directives as to what to do with me...."

Jaffa, Israel

themarker.com/israel ~ The Scientology building in Jaffa is being foreclosed, the Tel Aviv District Court ruled on Monday. The historic Alhambra cinema building belongs to the international Scientology movement through trustee Gur Finkelstein, who is suspected of attempted murder.

The foreclosure followed a petition by N.N. Salati Engineering and Projects Management. Last week, N.N. Salati filed a NIS 7.6 million suit against Finkelstein and the Scientology movement. According to the suit, the defendants commissioned the company to build a four-floor, 6,000 square meter building at the site and to renovate the 1936 cinema building last year, but paid it for only part of the work.

Buffalo, NY / Walden Galleria Mall

examiner.com "...there was trouble with the kiosk from the start. One Scientologist staffing the kiosk was known to become irate and threaten shoppers at the mall.

In 2010 the kiosk was temporarily closed down, allegedly because of nonpayment of rent. And just recently, after what we were told were a number of incidents, the Scientologists seem to be gone from the mall permanently. The Walden Galleria Mall has not responded to a request for comment. Over at the Eastern Hills Mall, the Scientologists have been known to set up shop for the holiday shopping season, however their presence there this season has not been confirmed.

Retreating under pressure isn’t anything new for the Buffalo area Scientologists. In 2005 they opened up a bookstore on the University of Buffalo campus in Amherst. The following year, after complaints that the store was being used for recruitment, including accusations of harassment of an 11 year old and a 13 year old visiting the campus during the summer, the store was quietly removed..."

Narconon's Detractors make Themselves Heard

cyberpresse.ca~ [translated] David Edgar Love and several masked protesters made themselves heard yesterday outside the Narconon facility in Trois-Rivières.

Sporting masks like the one V wore in V for Vendetta, the protesters wanted to get their message across to the public as well as to Narconon's patients. Brandishing signs on the roadside, the protesters were observed by some of the center's patients who were outside at the time. One of the placards said: "Run! Narconon = Cult of Scientology."

For David Edgar Love, Narconon represents a danger to patients. "They don't have the qualifications, they don't have the nurses, they don't have the doctors needed to treat patients," he says. According to Mr. Love, the treatments provided go so far as to endanger the lives of patients who receive them. "It does a lot of harm," he said.

Mr. Love explained that, when he was working for Narconon, his employer's advertisements touted a 70% success rate, but he says this claim was far from reflecting reality. He mentioned as evidence the example of a man who underwent detoxification at Narconon five times.

David Edgar Love is a former patient and former employee of Narconon Trois-Rivières. Mr. Love was admitted to Narconon in 2008 for a drug problem and he was hired there in 2009.

He has filed complaints with the Labour Relations Commission and the Human Right Commission. He argues that persons addicted to alcohol or drugs should be considered as persons with a handicap and should therefore have the same protection.

As a result of a regulation that took effect in July 2010, therapy centers for persons with addictions must obtain certification from Quebec. However, the process is taking longer than planned and not all centers have obtained this certification yet.

Last February, Mr. Love met with officials of the Mauricie and Central Quebec region Health Agency in connection with this certification.

(villagevoice.com) ~ Tony Ortega : I just got off the phone with Steve Whitmore, Los Angeles Sheriff Lee Baca's spokesman, who tells me that an official inquiry has been opened in the matter of an LA sheriff's deputy named Benjamin Ring. The deputy appeared in a Scientology mailer that encourages church members to spend money on expensive services rather than invest in real estate or put it away in a 401K.

Images of the mailer first showed up about a week ago on the Internet, but the message on it, accompanied by an image of Deputy Ring in his full police gear, was so outlandish, we suspected a hoax. Only after we'd received a physical copy of the mailer and verified with the Church of Scientology Los Angeles that it had put out the document did we contact the LA Sheriff's Department for comment.

"Your concerns about the text are our concern. We're going to get to the bottom of it," Whitmore told me this afternoon as he let me know that an official inquiry -- which may lead to an internal affairs investigation -- was already underway.

Whitmore says that some executives at the Sheriff's Department had been aware of the mailer when it first went out and began in inquiry, but Whitmore knew nothing about it until the Voice sent over images of it by e-mail earlier today. (Whitmore says he was not called earlier about the matter, despite an Internet report that Whitmore had told a member of Anonymous that there was no problem with a deputy appearing in an advertisement in his uniform.[more @ link]

Rex Fowler Guilty Of 1st Degree Murder [video]

thedenverchannel.com ~ After just two hours of deliberation, an Adams County jury found Rev.Rex Fowler guilty of first-degree murder in the slaying of his former business partner. Fowler, 59, was immediately sentenced to life in prison.

The fact that Fowler shot and killed Thomas Ciancio was never in dispute. What was in dispute was whether the act was deliberate and pre-planned. Prosecutors argued the fact that Ciancio was shot three times in the face could not be an accident -- it was an execution.

"Mr. Fowler waited until (Ciancio) signed that separation agreement before he took his life. Looked him right in the eye when he pulled that first trigger. He shot him right in the face! What does that tell you about deliberation?" prosecutor Dave Young asked the jury during closing arguments in the trial.

The defense argued that Fowler went to the office that day, armed with a gun, to kill himself.

"We're not trying to justify it. (Ciancio's) death is a tragedy but it is not first-degree murder," said Sarah Quinn, one of Fowler's two defense attorneys. "(Fowler's) only plan was to take his own life. No intent. No deliberation. It was just a tragic reaction by Mr. Fowler."

The jury had to decide if Fowler was guilty of first-degree or second-degree murder. District Court Judge Francis Wasserman dismissed defense requests to include crime of passion and other lesser offenses in the jury instructions.

Ciancio died Dec. 30, 2009 while he went to the office to collect a severance check from Fowler Software Design. Ciancio had decided to leave the company after the founder, 58-year-old Rex Fowler, had diverted $175,000 in company funds to Fowler's church, the Church of Scientology.

He and Fowler, the founder of the company, were the only two people inside the lower-level office near 84th Avenue and Interstate 25 that day.

Young and a fellow prosecutor waved a replica handgun during closing arguments to demonstrate the actions they allege Fowler took in putting three bullets into Ciancio's head. "If you fire three shots into someone's head it is your intent to kill," said prosecutor Yvette Werner.

"It is your conscious objective for them to be dead. (The defense) wants you to believe it was ... what? 'Oops! Oops! Oops!'" she said pointing a replica gun towards wall."Does that make any sense to you? Of course not."

Earlier Friday, Dr. James Wilkerson IV told the jury Ciancio had been shot "within two feet" -- and two of the shots were to the back of the head. [more...]

Paul Haggis vs. the Church of Scientology ~ The New Yorker’s massive, 26-page article-geddon on Scientology came out yesterday, and it discloses, among other things, that the FBI has been investigating the church on suspicion of human trafficking for more than a year.(see tampabay's truth rundown series)

But AOLNews (yeah, I know),was told by a federal law enforcement source "the investigation has fallen short and no criminal charges are expected to be filed." Course, I take that with a gain of salt, because source is unnamed (and AOL is the new kid on the block, trying to make a name for themselves).

Over at newser.com, a nice synopsis of what the New Yorker article covers is listed:

• The FBI has been investigating allegations of abuse by David Miscavige—L. Ron Hubbard’s protégé, Tom Cruise’s best man, and the church’s current leader—since at least December 2009. Many former members of Scientology’s religious order, Sea Org, show signs that they may have been the victims of human trafficking or enslavement.

• At Gold Base, the California desert center where leader David Miscavige has an office, church leaders are expected to “instill aggressive, even violent, discipline,” and physical force was sometimes used to “bring escapees back,” Wright writes. One ex-Scientologist gives an example of one punishment: getting sent to the “Hole,” two double-wide trailers where 80 to 100 people were confined and forced to “do group confessions all day and all night.” Another recalls being beaten by Miscavige five times, and says he didn’t report the incidents because Miscavige “holds the power of eternal life and death over you.”

• Sea Org members are sometimes recruited as young children, who sign billion-year contracts to serve the church; some have alleged being cut off from their families and forced to do manual labor—for $50 a week, which can be docked to as low as $13 for infractions. Members who fail can be sent to what Wright describes as “punitive re-education camps."

• The FBI is also investigating Miscavige’s swanky lifestyle. As the head of a tax-exempt organization, he is barred from enjoying “unusual perks or compensation,” but he has been given a $70,000 superbike, flies on chartered jets, wears custom-made shoes, has chefs and stewards, and basically lives like a celebrity.

Scientology Materials Seized At Ukraine Border

(translated @ WWP) / imk.ua [jan.28.11] ~ Customs officers seized printed materials, audio books, and audio lectures worth in total more than 302,000 UAH during an attempt to illegally move them across the border into Ukraine. The cargo consisted of 78 boxes of printed materials containing religious and philosophical teachings of Scientology and Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard. The IMK news agency learned of this from the press service of the State Customs Service of Ukraine.

A Mercedes-Benz cargo van driven by a citizen of the Republic of Belarus arrived at the Novi Yarylovychi customs control checkpoint. According to the documents that were provided for customs clearance, the transport vehicle was for the movement of "furniture and plastic articles". The furniture reached Ukraine from the Republic of Lithuania.

However, during a customs inspection of the cargo, customs officials verified if the rear and side doors of the cargo compartment had been secured by the customs authorities of the Republic of Lithuania. The driver said that, because the hydraulic system for opening the back door was out of order, access to the cargo compartment was only possible through the side doors. On the side doors were cardboard boxes with chairs.

To inspect the other parts of the cargo compartment, customs officials used the "Sova" ["Owl"] video surveillance system. This allowed them to see that, behind the furniture boxes, were white-colored boxes labeled "extended books". In these boxes, CDs and printed books by L. Ron Hubbard were found.

The driver explained that he was transporting the cargo for a fee per an agreement with persons he did not know. He had no shipping documentation for the cargo and there was no clearance of the goods by the customs authorities of the Republic of Lithuania. To make it difficult to access the cargo compartment of the vehicle and to avoid customs control, the persons who arranged the shipment had damaged the hydraulic system for opening the rear door.

Officials concluded that a citizen of the Republic of Belarus was trying to move goods across the customs border of Ukraine and concealing them from customs control using techniques to complicate their detection. The protocol concerning the violation of Article 352 of the Customs Code of Ukraine was invoked and the cargo was seized.

11 Scientologists Indicted in Theft of Gov't Documents

AUG.14.78 (Washington) ~ A federal grand jury on Tuesday indicted 11 members of the Church of Scientology, including the wife of the church's founder, on charges of stealing government documents and bugging government offices.

Named in the indictment was Mary Sue Hubbard, wife of L. Ron Hubbard, founder and head of the church.

The government's case is based in part on the FBI's raid on July 8, 1977, of the church's offices in Washington and Los Angeles in which hundreds of thousands of documents were seized.

In the indictment Tuesday, the government charged that the Scientologists planted agents in the government to find out about investigations of the church.

For example, the indictment charged that for one month in 1976, Sharon Thomas, an alleged agent of the church, stole documents from the office of Paul Figley, an attorney with the Justice Department's civil division.

The Scientologists have said they made copies of government documents, after being refused the material under the Freedom of Information Act, in order to counteract what they claim has been a government campaign of harassment begun more than 20 years ago.

The indictment charged that another Scientology agent, Gerald Bennett Wolfe, who the indictment says was also known as "Silver" and "Kelly", infiltrated the Internal Revenue Service as a clerk.

The indictment charged that the Scientologists planted an electronic eavesdropping device in an IRS conference room in 1974 and recorded a meeting that dealt with the Scientologists' application for tax-exempt status.

The government's case also relies in part on the cooperation of a former church official, Michael Meisner, who was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the indictment.

The other church members who were charged in the indictment are:
Jane Kember of Sussex, England; Morris Budlong of Sussex; the Rev. Henning Heldt of Los Angeles, who heads an arm of the church known as the Guardian office; Duke Snider of Hollywood, Calif., head of the church's information bureau;

The defendants face up to five years in prison and $10,000 in fines on several charges, which include conspiracy, obstruction of justice, lying to a grand jury and illegal bugging.

The indictment came as no surprise, since the Scientologists themselves said last month that they expected formal charges against at least 10 members of the church after courts had ruled that the documents seized in the church raids could be used as evidence.

Lisa McPherson Tragedy, 15 Year Anniversary [archive media]

Today marks the 15th anniversary of Lisa McPherson's death (February 10, 1959 – December 5, 1995). xenutv.com ~ Lisa was a devoted Scientologist for many years. In late 1995, she indicated to family and friends that she would be coming home to Texas. She never made it home. Instead, Lisa spent her last days confined in Scientology’s Fort Harrison Hotel.

During those 17 days, Lisa was undergoing a psychotic breakdown while under constant guard by Scientology staffers who tried to handle her with Hubbard policies. By the time they rushed her to a hospital it was too late. She had lost 40 pounds and was severely dehydrated. Lisa was pronounced dead on arrival.

Lisa's case is a good representation of the many people harmed or even killed by Scientology. Her case is well documented from court proceedings, Scientology documents, and good reporting. It's also a case that DM [David Miscavige] himself had a direct hand in, according to Marty Rathbun.

lisamcpherson.org averages about 250 visitors per day. There are many other sites that tell her story as well, so her life is remembered. Lisa's family wanted her story to be told so her fate would not happen to anyone else. Thanks to the Internet, this will be accomplished. ~ J.Jacobsen

Evening Independent Editorial / ISSUE: Scientology's New Claim

DEC.11.1985 (St. Petersburg) ~ Scientology takes the offensive. Its new program to sugar-coat its acidic past maintains that the organization is "just another church". The campaign to revise Scientology's checkered history may as well seek to make Spiro Agnew just another lawyer.

In Clearwater, Scientology operatives say they only want to be neighbors. Residents can be forgiven if they are more than a bit leery of such gratuitous claims. Clearwater residents, who have been remarkably tolerant of Scientology's headquarters, know the organization is anything but just another church. No other Pinellas religious organization has such a record:

• Criminality among leaders. In 1979 and 1980, nine Scientology leaders were found guilty of obstruction of justice in the burglary, bugging and planting of agents in US government offices. The third wife of Scientology founder L.Ron Hubbard, Mary Sue, was among those convicted. Hubbard remains reclusive and has not answered several court summonses. Courts have been asked to declare him dead and have refused.

• Dirty tricks. Scientology has engaged in a series of ruses and schemes in the country and elsewhere. It used nefarious tactics against former mayor, Gabe Cazares. It sought to entrap federal judge Ben Krentzman. It hired private investigators to pose as European investors and lured some Clearwater officials onto a yacht to discuss a phony proposal to invest in the city's downtown.

• Prone to lawsuits. History will surely find Scientology the most litigious group ever to pretend to be a religion. Often it sues its critics promptly, and thereby discourages further criticism.

• Front organizations. Several outfits have been created under various names to promote Scientology services. Recognized churches provide ministries and proudly use their real names in delivering the services. Scientology uses cover names as it misrepresents the fronts' real purpose, the recruitment of new members.

• Secret operations. Its records remain secret, it's leader's [Hubbard] whereabouts secret, it's tactics secret. Scientology deals in stealth.

• Unrecognized religious status [as of date of printing] The US Tax Court in September 1984 ruled that the California Church of Scientology was not tax exempt " because it operated for a substantial commercial purpose and because its net earnings benefit L.Ron Hubbard."

Earlier in 1984, an English justice, Sir John Latey, ruled that Scientology " is corrupt because it is bad on lies and deceit ... It is sinister because it indulges in infamous practices ... dangerous because it is out to capture people (and) for those of us old enough to remember, it is grimly reminiscent of the rantings and bullyings of Hitler and his henchmen."

• Commercial nature. The US Tax Court noted Scientology's "highly commercial nature, it's high annual profits and its substantial, undedicated cash reserves." The same court found that "one of its articulated goals was to make money." The first tenet of the church's "Governing Policy of Finance" formulated in 1972 was: "A. MAKE MONEY."

Only in Scientology are you told you can't enjoy the benefits of its religious exercises until you pay. Pay now, get an E-Meter later. This contrasts sharply with the religious tradition of extending services and rites and the seeking donations. Scientology called its fees for religious services "fixed donations", but they were clearly not donations but payments for services rendered, the tax court said. "Its very own worksheets do not refer to these amounts as donations but have a separate account entitled (true) 'donations' for charitable contributions."

Last month, Scientology pleaded for protections in a court on the basis that its teachings were secret under the US Trade Secrets Act, set up to protect businesses. A federal district court ruled that Scientology's secrets are the same as a private company's secrets.

But the organization is embarked on a new campaign, flush from the overturning of a $39-million fraud judgment against it in another suit. We shall all hear more of the claim that Scientology is just another church. We dare not accept it.

Scientology Members Convicted of Burglary

Nov.27.1980 (WASHINGTON DC) ~ Two high-ranking members of the Church of Scientology were convicted of burglary charges Wednesday in what the government called a widespread scheme by the church to infiltrate government offices and steal documents.

The two church members, who had been extradited earlier this year from England, were accused of ordering subordinates in Washington DC to infiltrate offices of the Internal Revenue Service and Justice Department with aims of copying or stealing documents.

The controversial church has been locked in a long battle with the IRS over its tax status. A church spokesman called the convictions "an obvious vendetta" by the government.

Last December nine other members of the church, including Mary Sue Hubbard, wife of the church's founder, were found guilty of obstruction of justice and sentenced to prison terms in connection with the same alleged scheme.

Jane Kember, who is a British citizen, and Morrison Budlong, an American, stood silently and showed little emotion as the jury foreman pronounced them guilty on all nine counts of aiding and abetting burglary.

Both defendants remain free on bail while awaiting sentencing and pending a probable appeal. The nine other church members are also free on bail pending appeal of their convictions.

US District Judge Aubrey E. Robinson set the sentencing date for Dec. 19.

During the month-long trial in US District Court, Mrs. Kember and Budlong claimed they had nothing to do with the efforts by Washington-based church members to steal IRS and Justice Department documents, saying they were more than 3,000miles away.

The prosecution, however, presented to the jurors church documents and letters between the England headquarters and Washington DC office showing what the government claimed was "a common scheme and plan" showing that the two church leaders knew of, and in fact at times ordered, the thefts. They also produced a former church member, Michael Meisner, who testified that he was certain the two defendants condoned the infiltration schemes.

Last December, two church members received prison terms after being convicted of stealing documents in federal agencies where they worked.

Sharon Thomas was convicted of taking records from the Justice Department, where she was employed as a secretary, and Gerald B. Wolfe was convicted of stealing documents while employed as a clerk-typist at the IRS. Mrs. Kember and Budlong declined to talk to reporters as they left the courtroom.

A church spokesman, Joseph Burgess, issued a statement accusing the Justice Department of "an obvious vendetta" in its pursuit of the case. "These defendants were prosecuted only because they challenged and sought to expose the Internal Revenue Service's unconstitutional activities ranging from false dossiers and intimidation to secret enemies lists.They were prosecuted because they fought back, " the statement said.

Meanwhile, Judge Robinson ordered three of the nine church members convicted last December to preform 300 hours of community service work as a result of a contempt ruling against them.

Scientology's Narconon In Legal Trouble On Multiple Fronts

• Narconon Vista Called Front for Scientology
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (CN) - A father claims Narconon International and the Association for Living and Education International are fronts for Scientology, and that he paid them $35,500 for "essentially worthless treatment" for his drug-addicted son. He says the groups run rehab programs "to enrich themselves and to provide a recruit base for the Church of Scientology rather than to provide competent treatment for chemical dependency."

David Compton sued the two companies, and Narconon Vista, alleging fraud and breach of contract. He wants his money back and $1 million in punitive damages.

"The conduct of defendants is pervasive and plaintiff and his son are not the first victims of the conduct of defendants," the complaint states. "Defendants are engaged in a scheme or plan to enrich themselves and to provide a recruit base for the Church of Scientology rather than to provide competent treatment for chemical dependency. As such, their actions are intended to inflict harm upon the persons entering their programs while obtaining large sums of money for essentially worthless treatment. Such pattern of conduct has resulted in harm not just to plaintiff and his son but many other families who have been traumatized by actions of defendants." [ more → ]

• Narconon Trois-Rivières, Canada
(Trois-Rivières) The Narconon Trois-Rivières detoxification centre, suspected of links with the Church of Scientology, once again finds itself in the middle of a controversy. This time, it's the public statements made over the weeked by a former patient who became an employee of the organization that have brought the subject back into the news.

David Edgar Love, a 57-year-old man from the Montreal area, has just filed a complaint with the Quebec Human Rights Commission as well as with the Quebec Labour Standards Commission . Both commissions are currently investigating the matter.

The former Narconon employee says he is suffering from post-traumatic stress since leaving the centre in May 2009. Harassment and threats are alleged to have been daily occurrences at the Parent Boulevard establishment.[ more → ]

US Charges Scientology Officials With Infiltration-Theft Scheme

May.20.1979 (LONDON) ~ The United States, attempting to extradite two Church of Scientology leaders from Great Britain, charges them with ordering US sect members to infiltrate government departments in Washington DC and steal documents, an attorney says.

Attorney David Tudor Price, representing the United States at extradition hearings here, alleged the two sect leaders - 30 year old Tampa native Morrison Budlong and British citizen Mrs. Jane Kember, born in Nairobi, Kenya - set in motion a plan that led to burglaries of the Washington DC offices of the Internal Revenue Service And the Justice Department.

Charges against them include aiding and abetting the theft of US government property, obstruction of justice, making a false declaration before a grand jury and aiding and abetting burglary.

Both are wanted in the United States to stand trial along with nine other Church of Scientology members on a total of 28 charges.

Tudor Price said in court last week that the actions against the IRS and Justice Department were ordered after sect members claimed to have discovered Interpol documents about L.Ron Hubbard, who founded the organization in the United States in 1954. Interpol is the Paris-based international police organization.

Aides to Hubbard, who moved his world headquarters to suburban London in the late 1960s, say the cult is the largest mental health organization and describe its goals as the establishment of "better conditions for man and society and to create a civilization without war, criminalization and insanity."

The group claims to have more than 5 million members worldwide, including 3.5 million in the United States and more than 300,000 in Britain.

Tudor Price claims Mrs. Kember was known as "Guardian Worldwide" and controlled an operations center in East Grinstead in southern England.

Tudor Price said Mrs. Kember sent a letter in November, 1973, to "the deputy guardian in the United States telling that her (Mrs. Kember's) office had obtained Interpol documents concerning the affairs of Ron Hubbard," instructing the deputy to get hold of other documents and left it "to him how to do so."

4 Corners Vindicated in Scientology Bias Complaint [video]

ABC(au) ~ The Independent Complaints Review Panel (ICRP) has not upheld a series of complaints made against a Four Corners program, broadcast on 8 March 2010, titled “Scientology: The Ex-Files”.

The program investigated aspects of the activities of the Church of Scientology, following the call for a government inquiry into the Church by Senator Nick Xenophon in 2009.

The complaint about the Four Corners program included three elements: the way in which the Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF) was described; disclosure of information about the Andersons’ familial relationships and the circumstances of their departure from the Church; and a broader complaint that “the show and its producers intended to leave the viewer with a negative imprint of the Church and its beliefs, without ever balancing the show with any of the good works that the Church undertakes”.

Church Tied to Theft of Federal Documents

July.09.1977 (WASHINGTON) ~ The government accused the Church of Scientology on Friday of carrying out a wide-range and partly successful plot to infiltrate the Justice Department and the Internal Revenue Service and to steal hundreds of confidential government documents.

The FBI, acting on a search warrant and an affidavit detailing the allegations, raided church offices in Washington DC and Los Angeles to recover the allegedly stolen documents and to obtain any other evidence of the alleged conspiracy.

The US attorney's office in Washington DC is considering whether to bring criminal charges against church officials, a department source said.

A federal magistrate issued a search warrant on the strength of an FBI agent's sworn affidavit describing evidence primarily obtained from Michael Meisner, a former high-ranking church official who allegedly supervised covert operations until he was arrested and decided to cooperate with federal investigators.

The affidavit said Meisner is being held in protective custody at his request because he and federal officials fear for his safety.

Scientology doctrine "requires the church attack and destroy it's enemies ... and those like Meisner who leave the church," the affidavit said.

Church officials in Los Angeles, at one point, held Meisner under "house arrest," gagged and in handcuffs to prevent him from returning to Washington DC after a series of meetings with church officials in Los Angeles, the affidavit said.

On June 20, Meisner called the US attorney's office in Washington DC to say he had escaped from church officials and wished to return to face criminal charges and "cooperate in the on-going investigation," the affidavit continued.

Based on Meisner's statements and other evidence, the government said "there is probable cause to believe that from 1974 through 1976, officials of the Church of Scientology in Los Angeles and Washington DC conspired to steal documents from the government" by burglarizing federal offices.

In addition, the church planted one of its members as a clerk in the Internal Revenue Service and another as a secretary in the office of a Justice Department lawyer, the affidavit said.

Those two alleged undercover agents for the church stole scores of documents from government files, duplicated them, kept the copies in church offices, the affidavit said.

The Church of Scientology, founded in the 1950s by L.Ron Hubbard who continues as its highest officer, has become controversial for its tactics in recruiting members through what some consider hard-sell techniques.

Some former members have said the church goes to extreme lengths to prevent its disciples from renouncing the church.

The church has brought a half-dozen lawsuits against the IRS, the FBI and other goverment agencies alleging that church officials were the victims of improper government surveillance and harassment.

Some of the suits concern the church's efforts to obtain government documents dealing with Scientology under the Freedom of Information Act. Thousands of documents have been turned over to the church to comply with the act.

But the affidavit by FBI agent Robert Tittle said the lawsuits were part of a strategy directed first against the IRS and later against the Justice Department.

In early 1974, Jane Kember, a church official known as the "Guardian World Wide," ordered "an all-out attack on the Internal Revenue Service which was to include the filing of lawsuits, a public relations assault as well as the actual infiltration of the IRS by agents of the church," the affidavit said.

As Guardian World Wide, Kember is based in East Grinstead, Sussex, England.

Another Thrown Under The 'Rathbun-ology' Bus

As described here and here, this week young Daniel Montalvo wanted to escape from Scientology's SeaOrg (you know, that whole billion year contract outfit) in LA, and (eventually) contacts two upper management ex-scientologists*, Marty Rathbun (former top-lieutenant ) and Tom Devocht (one time vice-president of CoSFSO Inc) They get him out of LA and on a flight to Florida.

Drop It Into Overdrive
OK. So far, so good. But wait. The kid took some hard-drives when he left. Uh-oh. First monkey wrench in the works. So, they ship the drives back [to where? no mention] Scientology says they didn't receive them [real surprise. Also, these guys ever heard of a "bonded courier"? You know, set-up that paper-trail thingy? Naah, didn't think so.]

Here Comes The Bus
Well turns out young Montalvo wants to talk to his mother (who is a Scientologist).

So the call is made to Scientology but instead ends up getting connected to Scientology's head lawyer, Kendrick Moxon [Yes, unindicted co-conspirator of Operation: Snow White. That one.]

Moxon proceeds to tell Montalvo that if he returned and cooperated by "routing out properly", he could avoid a life behind bars. Although Devocht told Montalvo that he was walking into a trap, Montalvo returned to LA like a good little obedient Scientologist.

In LA, Daniel was picked up by an investigator in a black car with blacked out windows. Instead of being taken to a hotel, where he could route out as promised, he was taken to the Century City Towers. He was deposited in an office on the 33rd floor where a pricey church lawyer interrogated him for two hours.

Montalvo was accused of taking church property, the hard drives, although he insisted that he'd sent them back. Montalvo was then taken to jail, where he spent 70 hours before he was bailed out by another former Scientologist, musician Tiziano Lugli.

Rathbun then gets on his blog and tells the world, "OMG! Scientology pulled a fast one on a kid!".

Why is this odd? One of Rathbun's jobs (or hats as they like to call them) while with Scientology was to make sure that people didn't blow or escape. He knew exactly what this kid was setting himself up for.
