Then came Blackberries and people started to get even more addicted to the fact they could write e-mails too – this bringing about the name ‘crackberry’. Then came iPhones and Androids and at this point smartphones are less an addiction and more a compulsion. Many of us have a better relationship with our phone, and see our phones more, than we do our partners and friends.

This is no bad thing though when you consider how much a smartphone can help with productivity and how much we can get done on them. And that’s particularly true for those who work from home or online and need to be constantly connected as a result. It’s almost enough to let you do away with computers altogether…

But could you? Are you yet able to run a website or an online empire entirely from a phone? Here we will look at how you might go about doing that and that apps and hardware you would need.

Keyboard: First of all you will need a good keyboard. This is the one area where Blackberries still have the upper hand (and some Nokias which currently still run Symbian). Otherwise you’re stuck with a ‘soft’ keyboard that appears on the screen. iPhone loses out here by not allowing you to customize the keyboard whereas Android gives you Swype, Writers’ Touch Type Keyboard and various other input methods. Bigger phones like the Galaxy Note meanwhile mean more space for your fingers.

WordPress: The WordPress app is actually very handy and if you run a WordPress site then this makes it very easy to update with new articles. You might not be able to install widgets etc quite as easily, but this way you can now write new posts on the train or while you’re out and that means there’s never an excuse not to be doing so regularly (and you can even take photos on your camera phone and upload them directly). There’s a Blogger one too.

FTP: There are various FTP apps that allow you to access your server and to edit, delete and upload new files. AndFTP does a great job on Android.

File Explorer: You’ll also need a file explorer if you’re going to use your FTP, and the ES File Explorer is just the app for the job (again Apple products are limited in this regard so you’re better off on Android). ES now has an FTP built in so you can treat your online storage as you would another folder on the phone.

DropBox: Drop Box is a great cloud app that lets you store files ‘on the cloud’ and access them just as easily. That means you can share files between your PC and phone which makes the whole thing more integrated.

Web Editor: Yes it’s even possible to get web editors and to edit HTML and JavaScript with nice previews available. I won’t lie and say it’s not fiddly though…

Social Networking Apps: If you have a website then you probably promote it through Twitter, Facebook and Google+. All of those are available on almost any mobile device, and that means you can tweet from anywhere. At the same time by using apps like RapidFire you can post to multiple social sites with one touch of a button.

When people think of using social media to find a job, they typically think of LinkedIn, as it’s a social network designed for the professional community. While LinkedIn is a great tool to use to job hunt, it’s not the only social networking site that can be utilized.

Effective job hunting occurs through networking, and what better way to network than through social networking? While sites like Facebook and Twitter are not the first social networking sites to come to mind when in need of a job, they are actually very beneficial to the search.

Facebook

Facebook can be the most difficult to utilize for a job search because you have to be fully dedicated to using it for job hunting and not for personal use. If you’re going to use Facebook for job hunting, you need to take a good hard look at your profile. Remove all the silly quotes and the unnecessary information and replace it with information that employers would find useful. You don’t need to place your whole resume on Facebook, but you do need to include valuable information that will make you stand out, such as professional accomplishments. According to an infographic by Degree360, employers only spend about 5.7 seconds on your profile, so it’s important to keep it simple and full of keywords.

The next step is going through your photos and only keeping those that are decent. Any photos containing illegal activity, partying or lewd acts need to be removed. Your profile needs to only contain information that you want a potential employer to see.

You also want to choose the right friends who could help you land a job. If you have friends that work for a company you’re interested in, make sure to befriend them on Facebook. You then need to use your status update to let your friends know that you’re currently looking for a job. This way, if one of your friends works for a company that is hiring, they could pass your information on to their hiring manager.

It’s also a good idea to set your privacy settings so that you can’t be tagged in pictures from your friends and that wall posts need to be approved by you first. You’ve worked hard at cleaning your profile to ensure it represents you in the best way possible, and you don’t want your efforts to be nullified by a friend who tags you in a picture from your crazy night out or talks about how drunk you were on your wall.

Once your profile is ready for job hunting and you’ve reached out to the right friends, you now need to reach out to companies you’re interested in. Be sure to “like” companies you want to work for, and then post a note on their wall letting them know that you’re interested in working for their company. Be sure to include the skills you have and what position you have experience with. You also need to let them know to check out your Facebook profile for more information. The person in charge of the company’s social media account can either pass your information on o their hiring manager or give you more information on how to go about applying for a position.
Twitter

Twitter is another great resource to use when job hunting. Like Facebook, the first step is to ensure that your profile highlights your professional experience and doesn’t contain any inappropriate information. Make sure that your image is professional looking and that your Twitter bio mentions your job search efforts.
In your profile, be sure to add a link to an online resume or cover letter to provide potential employers with more information about you and your experience. This will be a great addition to your regular Twitter profile to help employers determine if you would be a good fit for their company.

It’s also important to establish yourself as an expert. Get involved in conversations about topics that revolve around your experience. For example, if you’re looking for a sales job, be sure to talk about topics that relate to sales and provide your knowledge to those who are looking for information. Search for popular threads to get involved, and be sure to use hashtags in your tweets so that your comments end up in popular threads too.

Once your profile is ready for employers and once you’ve joined conversations and shared information to help highlight your experience and present yourself as an expert, you need to follow the right people. Start following companies that you want to work for as well as recruiting companies. By following these companies and these individuals, you will gain a better insight into their needs, and if they tweet about needing a position filled, you will know right away. Following these companies also allows you to build a relationship and start networking.

Finally, you need to tweet about your job search. Let your followers know that you’re currently looking for a job. Be sure to include the job title you’re interested in and share your experience. It’s also important to use hashtags in these tweets too so that your tweet will appear in popular threads and has the possibility to be seen by hiring managers at companies you’re not currently following. Plus, if any of your followers have an open position at their company, they can let you know.

Using Facebook and Twitter for job hunting is about presenting yourself in the most professional way and building your connections. Though these sites may not be as popular as LinkedIn when job searching, they still provide many benefits. Take a look at the infographic by Degree360 below for interesting information about job hunting with social media.

While the iPad has trumped the iPhone in terms of the sheer amount of work you can do on the device (due in large to the big screen), the iPhone has the advantage when it comes to portability and practicality and this means that wherever you are you will have a device in your pocket that lets you do your work. Here we will look at some of the most impressive productivity apps you can download for your phone to help you take the office with you.

QuickOffice Pro:

If you want to open and edit word documents or excel documents then you of course need a productivity suite that can help you to do this and QuickOffice Pro is just the ticket. For many people this will be the only required app for working on the go, but as most people’s work will consist of creating and editing documents it is something you will need at any rate.

iCloud or DropBox

These are both cloud storage apps that allow you to very easily share files with your computer. This means that when you’ve written your Word document, you can simply long press it and select ‘share’ to drop it into the relevant folder. Gone are the days where you had to e-mail yourself files, or where you had to sync with a Mac or PC in order to get the files off of your device (a drawback of the iPhone device in its inception) – now you can write something and instantly share it with everyone. And at the same time you can use this in order to work collaboratively with others.

TeamViewer

TeamViewer is a great little app that allows you to take control of a computer remotely and at the same time view the screen and see what’s on it. This was originally devised in order to enable people to provide tech support for their team or their family from across the globe but it also has many other impressive uses. Forgot to share a crucial file from your desktop before heading off on your business trip? Simple: just ask your family if they can load up the computer and you’ll then be able to open it and read through your phone. And better yet you can even use the connection to drag and drop the file into DropBox to make it available on your computer. It’s times like this we really marvel at the power of technology.

FTP

At the same time you can also use your own server for this kind of file sharing, or you can use it to access and edit files on your website. This is something you can do with a vast number of different apps, so take your pick!

WordPress

If you have a WordPress blog then you will have likely opted to use WordPress due to how easy it is to create and update posts. Well things just got that bit easier – and by using this app you will be able to do all that very quickly and easily on your phone – meaning you can even update your site while you’re on the commute.

Robbie Crowe is a tech blogger, you can visit his site to learn how to jailbreak iphone 4s 5.1. The site is not related to a single version and you can find tips for other models too.

But if you’re a business, email can be a really useful marketing tool—so how do you get consumers to differentiate your emails from the highly dreaded spam? Here are some tips, along with other things to keep in mind when using email to market your business.

1. Ask First!

An easy way to avoid coming off spammy is by asking your customers’ permission to send them emails. Give your customers the ability to sign up for a mailing list, and entice them do so by offering deals and specials exclusive only to subscribers. If you sell products online, give them a chance to opt-in at checkout, or if you have a brick-and-mortar store, have a sign-up list posted at the register. If your customers are expecting email from you, they’ll be a whole lot more receptive to it.

2. Keep ‘Em Coming Back For More

Once your customers agree to receive your emails, give them incentives to keep them interested. Offer special deals and rebates to your subscribers, or give them first dibs on new products or sales. Keep your emails up-to-date and relevant, and make sure they look nice! They need to look and feel professional if you’re trying to win people over.

3. Don’t Overdo It

So now that you’ve mastered the art of a tasteful, welcomed marketing email, resist the urge to barrage your customers with your glorious creation. Part of what makes people hate spam so much is its unrelenting nature, which of course you want to avoid. Send out emails at weekly, bi-weekly, or even monthly intervals to give them an orderly, legitimate feel. Of course, you can tweak this according to what works for you, but just be sure to restrain yourself if you feel those spammy urges coming over you.

4. Give Them An Out

When your customers sign up for your mailing list, it’s because they’re excited to hear about your business and the deals they can score. But if they change their mind, they need to have a way to opt out of your email list. The thought of losing potential customer might be painful, but even worse is bombarding people with emails they don’t want, which only serves to make your business look desperate and, that’s right, spam-alicious.

5. Have A Nice Website

Once you’ve actually gotten your customers interested in your business through email marketing, you need to have a nice place to direct them to. These days, that’s largely going to be your website (though your brick-and-mortar operation should probably look good, too). Don’t neglect your website—it should be aesthetically pleasing, function well, and be easy to navigate in order for people to take it seriously. If you’re selling products online, make sure your shopping cart platform runs smoothly and is user friendly. People will (hopefully) be entering their credit card info on your site, so it really needs to feel (and be) secure and legitimate.

It’s one of those topics we tend to avoid – we don’t want to know how the internet is affecting us, as most of us use it on a daily basis, and we enjoy using it.

No one likes finding out the things they love are bad for them.

But it remains a fact that 61% of us admit to being addicted to the internet. Let’s face it, I think even more than the 61% that have confessed would feel like their right arm had been chopped off if the internet disappeared.

Most of us wouldn’t be able to do our jobs, entire business sectors would collapse, and millions of companies would go bankrupt.

But where does our dependency on the internet stem from, and how is it affecting us all personally?

First it was radio, and then it was TV, now it’s the internet

Our recent history is littered with major technological innovations, all of which have been criticised for a reduction in our neurological functioning, the latest, of course, being the internet.

However, the internet is different from radio or TV, in the fact that it has infiltrated almost every aspect of our lives – we use it to work, to relax, even to shop.

In the UK alone, over 80% of us are internet users (and that includes babies, children and the elderly), which is higher than any other country, including the US.

Globally, we spend 35 billion hours on the internet per month, a total that has risen from zero just over two decades ago.

It’s not the content, it’s finding it

There’s no denying it, the internet contains every piece of information you could ever want, and search engines (in particular Google) have made all this information accessible.

Do you want to find out what plants are poisonous to a snake? Google it. Want to start a new diet that still lets you eat chocolate? Google it. ‘Google it’ has become an extremely popular phrase in our everyday vocabulary.

Google has virtually well and truly replaced reference books, and because of this, we are changing the way we remember information.

Twenty years ago, if you needed to find out something, you would trawl through books to find the information, and then store it in your memory for use later. However, now, when we want to find something, you tap it in to Google, and search through pages until you find the information you need. But because you know the info will still be there, readily accessible without leaving your desk, you don’t store the actual information in your memory; you store how to find it.

Too much to process

It’s not just the information we find on the internet, the volume and frequency of information is affecting our brain function too.

We now consume three times the amount of information per day as we did in the 60s, mostly thanks to us being able to open multiple tabs and windows.

The average number of tabs we have open at any one time is between 2 and 5, and we change windows/tabs more than once every two minutes. Basically, we try to do everything at once – check email, PM people, research, process documents…

When our brain is trying to multitask, the amount of brain function is split between the tasks, and our overall thinking slows down.

Multitasking also impedes creativity, so if you’re trying to write something profound, or come up with a breakthrough design, you’re better off just closing all those other windows.

So is the internet making us stupid?

The internet is definitely changing the way our brains handle and process information, but this isn’t necessarily a terrible thing.

If you take notice of the way you’re using the internet, you can manage it. Try remembering what’s on that page and then use it, rather than flicking back and forth between windows. If you’re working on something that needs your attention, close those other windows for half an hour and let yourself think. Take control.

Some are very successful at what they do, and can make a large profits based on their web sales alone; others fail at this. There are few things to avoid in particular if you are considering setting up your own online business:

Poor Navigations…

You want your customers to be able to find exactly what they need and fast. The more confused they become on your site trying to find a certain product, the more likely it is they will go to another website who can provide the same or a similar service.

Keep your website clear, and easy to follow. Make sure you categorize your products so they can be easily found. Ask friends and family to try your website, maybe test them to find certain products, and see how easy or hard it is for them to locate them on your site. Listen to your feedback, while some is opinion and might not be something you agree, there could be some good ideas that apply to your site.

Cluttered Website…

Some websites can become cluttered with too many images of products, links to here, there and everywhere, advertising banners splashed all over the home page, several different coloured fonts, and font styles.

Whatever you site is, make sure it is clear straight away for visitors. If you are selling goods, show what you do and tell them about your business. Make it clear where the online shop is, if you have one.

People will judge a lot by your homepage. Make sure you keep your website visitors attention; it is easy for them to navigate to another website with a click of the mouse. Get across your message in a clear concise way so you don’t leave them confused, wondering what it is you actually sell, or what service you provide.

Keep your colours and fonts simple and planned, by this you will be finding a sense of a brand. Make this brand and these colours and fonts suit your product.

Poor photography…

If your website has poor sloppy photography you will not convince your customers to buy from you. How can your products be judged fairly if all you provide is a small grainy image which isn’t really clear?

Make sure your photographs are big enough to be seen, a zoom button feature can help here. They need to be of good quality, and the angles must show in detail what you are providing. Wording and photography is all have to achieve sales. Make sure they are correct and will serve their purpose. A professional photographer is expensive, but if you want to sell online successfully, then you need to invest and look professional. You might have a fantastic product, but if it can’t be seen in a way that gives it justice, then it won’t come across in the way it deserves.

Poor content, or no content…

Your content is what is written on your website. This could be ‘about you’ sections or product descriptions. Google will list your page in a search if it finds it to be relevant to a particular search entered. It does this by reading your site and picking out these keywords that the searcher is looking for. It is therefore important you really describe your products well. Write down the details, what is it? What it’s made from? Provide dimensions etc. The more information you provide, the better, but remain clear and clutter free.

Some websites are built using templates where you upload your images. If you don’t have actual text on your website, and your text is in the form of an image, Google will never rank you for anything, it won’t be able to read your website. Make sure your content is actual text which can be found in searches so you can attract new customers.

Poor graphics…

Your graphics can let you down. This relates back to colours, fonts and brand. Your graphics need to be professional. Not all of us are professional Photoshop users. If you aren’t then seek help from somebody who can help you make your artwork look good. People won’t trust your company if your artwork looks old fashioned or unprofessional. Really think how you are presenting yourself to the public. Would you purchase goods from your website?

This might sound cynical, and it might in fact even be cynical, but the fact is that a lot of business is simply based around companies using a series of strategies in order to manipulate people emotionally into spending money or using their product.

This sounds harsh yes, but the reality is that most of our decisions as consumers do come down to emotion, and that leaves businesses with no real option other than to focus on this (because a business does need to make money).

This is highly true when it comes to getting people to make purchases of various commercial goods – many of which we buy on impulse, or even to make ourselves feel better. It’s also very true of course of something like Facebook which we use almost compulsively because basically we hope it will lead to our developing new friendships or romantic relationships.

How This Applies to Your Website

But what you might not have realized is that this also very much applies to your own websites – and if you want to make your site into something that people visit compulsively, or that they spend a lot of time on, then it’s highly important to start thinking of your website in terms of the emotional impact it has on visitors.

But how can a simple website have an emotional punch? Here are just a few ways you can tap into the emotional aspect of your visitors to encourage more visits, more clicks and more purchases.

Choose the Right Niche: Of course you can get people to develop an emotional response to your website by simply writing about the right thing. If your site is about dating, or self improvement, then people will be more emotionally attached to your site because they will think it can help them find a romantic partner or to make more friends/do better in work. All of which are very good things.

Find an Emotional Hook: But if you don’t have a niche that is inherently emotional in nature or likely to benefit the reader then think of a way to make it more enticing – by using anticipation or curiosity. When you see a magazine telling you about what Jennifer Aniston really thinks about Brad and Jolie you read it out of a sense of curiosity. And yes, that counts as an emotion you can manipulate.

Create a Sense of Community: You can also benefit from creating a sense of community on your site so that they seem to make friends on your website. You can accomplish this by giving your site a forum or a comments section and encouraging your visitors to talk among themselves.

Let Them Know You: Meanwhile you should try to make your visitors feel as though they know you. That means writing in a chatty style that puts across some of your personality, it means writing about yourself and generally it means making it more like something you would write as advice in an e-mail to a friend rather than to a client in an office.

Make the Site Stimulating: You should also try to ensure that the site is stimulating in the right ways so that it encourages some kind of emotional response to look at. This means using the right colors and using the right imagery. Try to make your site calming and relaxing and attractive, and generally ensure that people want to spend time here rather than wanting to leave quickly because it’s stressing them out.

The amount of money spent on internet advertising is forecasted to reach over £100 per user this year in the UK. Five years ago the figure was around £70 and it has been steadily rising year on year. The internet advertising industry is huge across the world, and the UK is currently coming in at fourth after Norway, Australia and the US. While SEO and organic search results remain a priority for many businesses, PPC seems to be a strong and continually growing feature of most marketing strategies. Whatever the size of your SEO and PPC budget, it needs to be one part of a much bigger strategy if your share of the estimated £4.85 billion spent on internet advertising isn’t wasted.

Get into Reverse

While it’s tempting to see internet advertising as a quick way to avoid the quagmire of SEO – an ever shifting set of sands if ever there was one – the merry sound of clicking customers is only the start of it. Getting your ads right in the first place requires some thought. If, for example you search the phrase “copywriting” you’ll get a whole range of organic and not-so organic results. They’ll all look and sound very much the same. If just over to the right of your screen, hovering in the peripheral PPC margins of your vision, you spy the phrase “Really Bad Copywriting” the chances are you’ll click on that. OK, so it’s good old fashioned reverse pshyco stuff, but it works. Whatever your competitors are saying in their ads, try to say the opposite.

What Happens Next?

Well, your potential customers will land gently, we hope, on your page. Make it a soft landing if you can, a gentle pleasant experience that is not, repeat not, full of sales hype. It only takes a nano-second to click back and that’s normally the effect that hard sell will have. If you’ve got them this far you haven’t yet won the war on engagement, but you’ve certainly one battle under your belt. At this point you need to engage them further, I could say reel them in but that would be harsh, unfair and disrespectful, if a little true. This is the point that your content, graphics, imagery and copy will matter.

What and Where?

If your internet advertising channel of choice is getting attention, that attention needs to be maintained. If your copywriting skills aren’t up to it you may get attention of the pointing and laughing kind – but that isn’t really the desired effect. Having landed gently on your page, they’ll be looking for stuff to entertain, inform or provide some use to them. Your “About Us” section, or your blog, will be the next place that they are most likely to click – according to statistics, if you believe that sort of thing.

Content Pages

Fresh, well written content here is essential. It needs to be relevant to the sort of customers you are expecting to visit. It doesn’t need to be – probably shouldn’t be – product focused. Informative, articles and blog posts relating to the general subject you’re working with, will be more useful. The more creative the better, the funnier the better and in many cases as controversial as you can get away with while avoiding libel, slander and other types of prosecution. If you’re not a pro-writer or haven’t the time to constantly update your blog, hire one. It’s not money you’ll regret.

While paid internet advertising can fast track you to a high rank – the content of both your advertising and site is equally important. Copywriting services can help you to ensure that customers don’t just click and then click ‘back’, but keep coming back.

Whether you have a productive day or not is reliant on multiple different factors, but of course the main thing responsible is simply how you’re feeling. In short then it comes down to your psychology and if you could control this then you would find you were able to control your productivity much more closely. Here we will look at how to make yourself more productive in a number of ways by understanding how your own mind works.

The Mozart Effect

Most people have heard of the ‘Mozart effect’ which is a theory that you can work better and faster when listening to Mozart music. So is there any truth to this? Well the answer is yes and no. Yes for some people, listening to Mozart can help them to work, but at the same time so can a lot of music and other things. The reason this works so well is that it helps us to manage your boredom levels and keep up a high level of productivity.

If you read around then you will have heard some nonsense about ‘left brain right brain’. This is just pop psychology unfortunately and you shouldn’t take it too seriously.

However while there’s little evidence for some of the left brain and right brain theories, it is certainly true that there are parts of our brain which thrive more on creative endeavours rather than dry facts. Most work is by definition boring – otherwise it wouldn’t be work, it would be play… And this then can make it somewhat hard for us to focus on what we’re doing and to work without that part of our brain kicking up a fuss. That’s why you can’t simply work for hours straight, because pretty soon you’re going to crave something a little bit stimulating.

This gives you a few options to get around this problem. One of these is to try and give your creative part some entertainment to make the situation you’re working in less dry. This is why the Mozart effect works, because it allows you to focus on something other than just numbers or text, and to instead enjoy some music that won’t distract you from what you’re doing.

I personally don’t find this to be quite enough, and when I’m working I start hankering after some action – which inevitably leads to me loading up a computer game or something. A great way to get around this I find is to watch something non-distracting in YouTube while I work which allows me to look at that while I type. I often choose to watch computer games that other people are playing through for instance, or YouTube playlists of action scenes. I imagine you could watch Tom and Jerry too as the absence of talking would make it suitable.

Let’s Talk About Alternatives

The other option is to take a break from your wok and to do something more creative and entertaining for a bit so that you can focus more when you come back to working. If you’ve been working solidly for a while or if you find yourself starting to procrastinating, then instead of half working for ages and not really getting anything done or enjoying yourself; take a bit of time off and separate your work from your play so you can come back refreshed.

And finally you can simply make your work more interesting. You can do this by making it into a game or a challenge, or if your work has a creative element (such as writing) aim to make something more interesting out of it and to apply some more inventiveness. You’ll end up with a better end product too.

One of the driving forces behind how we interact is without a doubt the Internet. The world online changes the way we talk with others, they way we share information, and even the way we market our products and services. Since the vast majority of US households are Internet-connected with at least one device, such as a PC, it makes sense that marketing would start to focus on the web. Honestly though, how important is online marketing for businesses today? The answer is very.

First of all, print, TV, and radio advertising can be very expensive and often out of the reach of smaller businesses because of the cost. Best of all, there are marketing options online for all sorts of budgets, big and small. From social network marketing, to blog writing, and more, there are many profitable ways to market your business online. You get the reach of TV/radio but without the exorbitant costs involved.

So how do you advertise your brand online? There are many options, which include getting involved in e-mail marketing, paying a click-per-ad company to feature your product or business ad, and of course creating your own website and/or blog. This last option is very profitable as long as you understand the methods needed to make your site/blog known to the public and drive traffic to them.

The single most important reason for why marketing online is important is a no-brainer– it’s here to stay and it is constantly growing. Over the next several years, millions of new potential customers and clients will connect to the net, becoming a big force. More and more consumers are turning to the net to search for local businesses (instead of the YellowPages) and even buying completely online. Staying with traditional marketing alone will make your business look behind the times and will miss many thousands of potential customers you could easily have reached. The Internet is so important to average people because finding information is often easy, free and can be done from almost anywhere thanks to mobile phones, tablets, and other internet-connected devices.

So could you stick to traditional print, radio, and TV methods alone? Sure you could, but you would also risk missing out on millions of customers over the course of your businesses life and you will quickly find that you are spending as much in a year with TV, radio and print as you could have online in a five year period. Getting started is easier than ever, and simply starts with finding a marketing firm that understands how to reach your target audience through great online marketing techniques.
