“When I see that list (of goals), at all times I am thinking of ways that the methods, tools and sheer power of the scientific enterprise can resolve those problems”, Tyson, July 2010.

Listen to Dr. Tyson as he speaks on HIV/Aids and Cultural Attitudes; the Possibility of Asteroids colliding with earth in the Indian Ocean – where does the responsibility for action lay; children as natural creators, investigators, scientists; the importance of science literacy……

Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson is the first occupant of the Frederick P. Rose Directorship of the Hayden Planetarium.

Tyson was born and raised in New York City where he was educated in the public schools clear through his graduation from the Bronx High School of Science. Tyson went on to earn his BA in Physics from Harvard and his PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia.

Tyson’s professional research interests are broad, but include star formation, exploding stars, dwarf galaxies, and the structure of our Milky Way. Tyson obtains his data from the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as from telescopes in California, New Mexico, Arizona, and in the Andes Mountains of Chile.

In 2001, Tyson was appointed by President Bush to serve on a 12-member commission that studied the Future of the US Aerospace Industry. The final report was published in 2002 and contained recommendations (for Congress and for the major agencies of the government) that would promote a thriving future of transportation, space exploration, and national security.

In 2004, Tyson was once again appointed by President Bush to serve on a 9-member commission on the Implementation of the United States Space Exploration Policy, dubbed the Moon, Mars, and Beyond commission. This group navigated a path by which the new space vision can become a successful part of the American agenda. And in 2006, the head of NASA appointed Tyson to serve on its prestigious Advisory Council, which will help guide NASA through its perennial need to fit its ambitious vision into its restricted budget.

In addition to dozens of professional publications, Dr. Tyson has written, and continues to write for the public. He was a monthly essayist for Natural History magazine under the title Universe. And among Tyson’s nine books is his memoir The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist; and Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution, co-written with Donald Goldsmith. Origins is the companion book to the PBS-NOVA 4-part mini-series Origins, in which Tyson serves as on-camera host. The program premiered on September 28 and 29, 2004. And beginning in the fall of 2006, Tyson has appeared as the on-camera host of PBS-NOVA’s spinoff program NOVA ScienceNOW, which is an accessible look at the frontier of all the science that shapes the understanding of our place in the universe.

Tyson’s latest two books are the playful and informative Death By Black Hole and Other Cosmic Quandaries, which was a New York Times bestseller, and The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America’s Favorite Planet, chronicling his experience at the center of the controversy over Pluto’s planetary status. The PBS/NOVA documentary “The Pluto Files”, based on the book, will premiere in March 2010.

During the summer of 2009 Tyson joined with co-host Lynn Koplitz, a professional standup comedienne, to bring science to commercial radio with the NSF-funded pilot program StarTalk. Combining celebrity guests with informative yet playful banter, StarTalk’s target audience is all those people who never thought they would, or could, like science.

Tyson is the recipient of twelve honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal. His contributions to the public appreciation of the cosmos have been recognized by the International Astronomical Union in their official naming of asteroid 13123 Tyson. On the lighter side, Tyson was voted Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive by People Magazine in 2000.

Tyson lives in New York City with his wife and two children.

Read more about Dr. Tyson on his website at the Hayden Planetarium

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is the leading body for the assessment of climate change, established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to provide the world with a clear scientific view on the current state of climate change and its potential environmental and socio-economic consequences.

The IPCC is a scientific body. It reviews and assesses the most recent scientific, technical and socio-economic information produced worldwide relevant to the understanding of climate change. It does not conduct any research nor does it monitor climate related data or parameters. Thousands of scientists from all over the world contribute to the work of the IPCC on a voluntary basis. Review is an essential part of the IPCC process, to ensure an objective and complete assessment of current information. Differing viewpoints existing within the scientific community are reflected in the IPCC reports.

The IPCC is an intergovernmental body, and it is open to all member countries of UN and WMO. Governments are involved in the IPCC work as they can participate in the review process and in the IPCC plenary sessions, where main decisions about the IPCC work programm are taken and reports are accepted, adopted and approved. The IPCC Bureau and Chairperson are also elected in the plenary sessions.

Because of its scientific and intergovernmental nature, the IPCC embodies a unique opportunity to provide rigorous and balanced scientific information to decision makers. By endorsing the IPCC reports, governments acknowledge the authority of their scientific content. The work of the organization is therefore policy-relevant and yet policy-neutral, never policy-prescriptive.

Lowell Fuglie, a stalwart in the moringa community, is no more with us. He passed away in Canada on 21 April 2010. He will be greatly missed. Moringa Partners is dedicating the month of June to his memory with input from the Moringa Community. The Yakkers’ Corner is proud to republish his last interview with us.

Mr. Lowell Fuglie, an American citizen, worked for 17 years based in Dakar, Senegal, as West Africa Regional Representative for the American relief and development agency Church World Service. His mandate during that time was to identify local African partners in West Africa (non-government agencies, church development offices, village associations) and work with them to implement development projects to assist the neediest.

He did his own research to discover ways to assist partners. One result was the publication of a book, supported by The Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA), entitled “Producing Food Without Pesticides: Local solutions to crop pest control in West Africa,” a collection of organic approaches to food production using locally-available resources.

His research also led to an interest in the Moringa tree which he read about in a monthly newsletter prepared by ECHO: Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization, which referred to the edible leaves of the fast-growing Moringa tree as the most nutritious of all tropical vegetables. When he learned that Moringa was already present in countries throughout sub-Saharan Africa and that its leaves were already a part of the diets of some groups, he wondered why, with such a valuable source of nutrition readily available, there still exists high rates of malnutrition.

This led to the development of a project to conduct a field trial to determine the extent to which Moringa could be effective in preventing or curing malnutrition. Between 1997 and 1999, in association with the Senegalese organization AGADA (Alternative Action for African Development), the idea of drying Moringa leaves and turning them into a powder for use as a nutritional supplement was developed, and the project trained rural health workers and village women in the Casamance region of southern Senegal in its use. Mothers who brought malnourished children to clinics were given packets of the powder to be added to the child’s food every day. (The previous method of treating malnourished children was to advise women to purchase milk, vegetable oil and other costly items to feed their children – a method too costly for many).

The project’s results far exceeded expectations, with malnourished children returning to good health in less than 40 days, and rates of malnutrition in some areas dropped significantly. A short, 60-page book about the project and the Moringa tree was published. It led to considerable publicity, including a front page article on the Los Angeles Times, page 2 of the International Herald Tribune, an interview on American public radio, and even a documentary featured world-wide on the Discovery Health Channel.

In 2001, the first international workshop on Moringa took place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania with the help of Dr. Armelle de Saint-Sauveur of the French organization PROPAGE. This workshop was attended by over 120 people from 27 countries. In the same year a new, expanded book on Moringa was published, again with CTA support, with versions in both English and French.

Since then, interest and use of Moringa has rapidly grown. Today there exist national associations of Moringa promoters in over five African countries, and there are Moringa promotion projects underway throughout the third world. To learn more about Moringa, consult the website created by Dr. Saint-Sauveur: www.moringanews.org

While DIL currently educates over 17,000 students and trains 1,200 teachers annually, the organization has evolved over the past 15 years to improve the quality of teaching and learning through its carefully designed curriculum enhancement initiative, libraries, computer labs, and extra-curricular activities.
Founded by a group of Pakistani-American women, and supported by the Pakistani diaspora, DIL brings a deep cultural and contextual understanding to its work. DIL involves local communities engendering mutual respect and trust.
LaborVoices, Inc. is an innovative St. Louis-based company that offers real-time, workforce intelligence and supply chain monitoring tools to corporate clients. Utilizing innovative crowd-sourced monitoring tools around the globe, LaborVoices enables companies to have constant updates on the health of their supply chains before products have even shipped. Such intelligence helps companies maintain ethical supply chains that are transparent, accountable, and productive and helps them avoid costly supply chain disruptions.

Founded by social entrepreneur Kohl Gill, Ph.D., LaborVoices, Inc. supports transparent labor networks with better working conditions producing higher quality products. LaborVoices received a prestigious Arch Grant earlier this year to continue their work and was subsequently invited to be a member of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI).

The supply chain management software market is $10 billion industry, growing at 9% per year. As states like California and the Federal government demand more supply chain transparency and accountability from firms, entire industries are recognizing that inspections aren’t enough.

LaborVoices offers the solution through the simplest yet most ubiquitous of means—the common cellphone. LaborVoices’ mobile phone portal turns worker testimonials into labor market intelligence. Our system provides an informational and financial incentive to our user base: supply chain workers. We then sell our supply chain intelligence to major consumer brands and suppliers. The system allows local workers to perform real-time monitoring of working conditions, product and output quality, and operations. LaborVoices is the first mover in this space, and we plan to be the best.

About LaborVoices’ CGI Commitment
At the Clinton Global Initiative, LaborVoices committed that by the end of 2013, they will use crowdsourced workforce intelligence to inoculate 100 villages in India and China against human trafficking by: 1) connecting all potential labor migrants to the LV platform; 2) informing them of actual conditions in destination factories; and 3) warning them away from predatory recruiters. In addition, LaborVoices will expand operations within India and China, and into Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

“We were thrilled and honored to be asked to join the Clinton Global Initiative,” said LaborVoices CEO Dr. Kohl Gill. “Our company offers global solutions to big problems facing workers around the world and corporate brands. And we work fast. We can be operational in any factory in China and India within 72 hours.”

Gill said that the news last week about strikes and a 2000-worker riot outside of a Foxconn plant in China further demonstrated that existing supply chain management efforts are not working and that more must be done to both protect workers and offer suppliers, major brands and other stakeholders tools and intelligence to ensure that they are not unwittingly contributing to human rights abuses.

“Global workers are vulnerable to abuses like wage-theft and human trafficking, and corporate brands need visibility and insight into their global supply chains to insure corporate responsibility. That’s where LaborVoices can make a real impact. We share information among workers, helping them help each other find the best work available. We guide workers to best-in-class employers and guide major brands to best-in-class suppliers. It’s a win-win, and we’re revolutionizing accountability and transparency in supply chains and labor markets.”

LaborVoices promises to turn up a solution for corporate supply chain issues for their clients in a matter of weeks. They can be operational in any factory in China or India within 72 hours.

Trade of Innocents – Justice Needs A Hero.

Bill and Laurie Bolthouse have been passionately pursuing health care and justice issues for the past few years in such diverse places as Macedonia,Uzbekistan, Zimbabwe andIndia. This recent foray into film is their attempt to leverage their impact in championing the cause of victims of child sex trafficking. The story of “Trade of Innocents”, set in the seedy brothels of Cambodia, is close to their hearts as Bill and Laurie’s paths have intertwined with a few of these precious girls rescued from sex slavery and the brave men and women who labor tirelessly to help them.

It is their joy to work with such a tremendous cast and crew on this film project and to have their three teenage daughters; Meredith, Madison and Molly actively participate with them on the set inBangkok, Thailand. They reside in Littleton and Breckenridge, Colorado.

As President of Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership (DCGEP), Aric Noboa leads the development and implementation of the organization’s strategic goals and objectives, and ensures it fulfills its mission to use the power of media to transform education and improve lives in the developing world. In June 2007, Noboa was invited to join 26 leaders in the field for the St. George’s House, Windsor Castle Leadership Initiative on HIV/AIDS. The gathering is designed to develop leadership and ideas in prevention in Africa and Europe.

With the Partnership since 1999, Noboa previously served as Executive Producer, overseeing all programming development and production for the wide-ranging content that has opened new doors to learning for over 2 million people on four continents. Together with various production teams, he has been honored by the New York Film Festival, the Chris Awards and the International Monitor Awards, and has received numerous CINE, Telly and Freddy Awards.

Earlier in his career, Noboa served as a congressional staffer to a member of the U.S. House of Representatives – focusing on education, the environment, commerce and the political status of U.S. territories. After working on the Hill, he relocated to a hospital ship in Benin, West Africa, leading a community health education team working in rural areas throughout the country. Noboa later pursued documentary film & television production and managed post production for two of Discovery Communications’ international networks, before moving to South Africa to develop production strategies and mechanisms for the Partnership.

Noboa is a graduate of James Madison University and based in Silver Spring, Maryland.
