topic of PC Virtualization in Healthcare. Here are the details:

A Smarter Approach to Healthcare PC Virtualization

Tuesday, May 22, 2012
2:00 pm ET/11:00 am PT

There's been a lot of talk of PCs going the way of the woolly mammoth (Post PC era anyone?). With cloud computing, wireless broadband and distributed workforces, are organizations moving to a new era of tablets and thin clients as the new survival tools? The question is hotly debated and intertwined with three equally hot trends: PC virtualization, cloud computing, and the consumerization of IT.

Join IT experts from Intel and Virtual Computer for a webinar with live Q&A to learn about what's really happening with PCs, thin-clients, and tablets.

During this webinar, you’ll learn:

Key metrics and healthcare trends on tablets, thin clients and PCs

Best use cases for PCs, thin-clients, and tablets in healthcare

How Intelligent Desktop Virtualization (IDV) transforms PCs

Economics and performance of VDI vs. IDV

Yes, I carry multiple gadgets so that my kids (n=3) can be entertained on the flight and hotel. One iPad won't cut it. So, could I survive with just an iPad or Android tablet? I probably could if I only had to check email periodically. However, I'm a blogger and I just can't stay away from blogging.

So, what are the 5 reasons why I can't live on an iPad (or Android tablet)?

1. Copy/paste is still rather archaic on mobile devices. I do a lot of copy/paste and it's simply too difficult (or rather impossible at times) to do on an iPad or Android tablet. Until this becomes easier, I'll naturally end up pulling out my laptop.

2. The typing experience. Sorry folks, but the on-screen typing or the Bluetooth keyboards just don't cut it for me. I do some serious typing when I'm composing a blog post.

3. Problems with browser compatibility. If you do enough web browsing on a mobile device, you'll encounter some type of compatibility bug. I've tried almost every mobile browser that is available. I've gravitated towards my favorites, but they still have some intermittent issues when you visit certain sites. In most cases, the problem is with the site, not the browser. However, a problem is a problem and it impacts my productivity. There are still too many websites out there that are not optimized and properly programmed for the mobile experience.

4. Video editing. The existing video editing apps on mobile devices are still fairly primitive. When I am traveling, I often shoot video that I will edit and upload to my YouTube channel. It's just too difficult to edit/cut/splice movies on a mobile device and upload them to YouTube. I'd rather stick the SD card into my laptop, manipulate the video, then upload the new video files.

5. I still rely on spell check and autocorrect when I am composing lengthy documents. Right now, the majority of word processing apps don't have robust spell check and autocorrect features that are built-in to the app. You can get these if you're connected to the Internet, but if you're working on a plane that lacks Wi-Fi, you're typing with no correction. I still make too many mistakes typing, so I need these features when I'm writing.

So, these are the main reasons why I always carry a PC, even when I'm carrying a mobile tablet like an iPad or an Android tablet. In many cases, I leave the tablet behind because what's the point of carrying both a PC and a tablet?

I've been waiting for this upgrade for my ThinkPad because it's currently running Android 3.1 Honeycomb and I'm sure there's a better, more refined operating system that will make this tablet work more efficiently. I chose to get the Lenovo ThinkPad Android Tablet because it's one of the few Android tablets that also comes with the option of an active pen for inking and writing. These pens are much more accurate compared to spongy capacitive stylus pens.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is currently available on a number of other Android tablets like the Asus Transformer Prime.

Do you have wheels for your mobile computer? Or, is your tablet so light that you don't need any wheels?

The "computer on wheels" or "COW" may be ubiquitous in the hospital, but in the medical office or clinic you're more likely to find PC terminals in each patient room or physicians walking around with tablet computers or laptops. Of course, some docs prefer wheeling around a COW and going from one room to the next. This is the only way to be mobile with a large monitor + mouse/keyboard combination if you don't have them set up in every room. It's really not a bad setup, but I think it would be better if you added another monitor that actually faces the patient. After all, the medical encounter with the patient should include some type of interactive display. This allows the provider to illustrate complex concepts to the patient using multimedia and this is why tablet computers are becoming so popular as bedside education tools designed for the point-of-care.

The next time you're shopping for a mobile computer on wheels, consider adding that 2nd monitor that faces the patient.

Simply turn on your PC and let the remote person take over. That's why remote desktop support has gained such popularity in the medical community and we can all anticipate the need for more support as hospitals and medical offices turn to computers for health records and order entry.

A few months ago, I was speaking with several physicians who were looking for remote support for healthcare because they were dealing with electronic health records (EHRs) that also included personal health records (PHRs) for patients. They wanted to make sure that remote support providers were going to operate in a manner that would not violate any HIPAA regulations concerning patient privacy and data security. A related issue to data security and privacy surrounds the type of remote support software that you'll need to install on your computers. Some applications may open up your network of computers to malicious attacks from hackers. Some may conflict with other remote access software that you may be running for your office staff or other support teams that need to access your EHR or your lab data.

Before you completely rely on remote desktop support, make sure to invest in a backup Internet connection. The simplest form is a 3G or 4G wireless Wi-Fi hotspot that will allow you to connect all your PCs to the Internet. If you have desktop computers, get wireless access cards (Wi-Fi) for them as well.
This has to be one of the thinnest laptops I've ever used.

From a distance, ASUS Zenbook UX31 looks like a MacBook Air, but this is a Windows PC running Windows 7 and it lacks a backlit keyboard. The MacBook Air actually went through an interesting transition for a period where Apple eliminated the backlit keyboard in the second generation, then brought it back in the third generation of the MacBook Air.

I personally think that a backlit keyboard is an essential feature for health care professionals and business executives. You're likely to find yourself working in a place where the lighting is low (radiology suite, an airplane at night, etc.), and it really enhances your productivity when you can see the keyboard.

The ASUS Zenbook UX31 also uses a proprietary power supply that is unlike most standard power supplies. This means that it will be more difficult to find an external battery pack or a universal power adapter to power your ASUS Zenbook. The battery life on the Zenbook is rated as 5 hrs and 58 min by Laptop Magazine and 6 hrs and 9 min by PC Mag. When PC Mag reviewed the ASUS Zenbook UX31 last November, they have it the "Editor's Choice" recognition. Then, in Jan of 2012, they gave the "Editor's Choice" to the HP Folio 13 ultrabook.

Overall, the ASUS Zenbook UX31 is an excellent choice for someone who cares deeply about the aesthetics of a laptop. It's super slim and light. Most people will think it's a MacBook Air (which is a compliment to Apple).

Be aware that this notebook does not have a VGA port. So, if you frequently give presentations, you'll need to carry an adapter. Plus, the HDMI port is actually a mini-HDMI port on the Zenbook, so you'll need a different type of adapter if you plan to attach to a standard HDMI cable.

If the ASUS Zenbook had a backlit keyboard and longer battery life, that would really make it a top-notch ultrabook. I hope to see those features in their next model.

I've also been using the ASUS ZENBOOK which is a really nice ultrabook, but it lacks a backlit keyboard and its battery life is mediocre. HP has done a really nice job coming out with a business-class ultrabook that is an excellent choice for health care professionals who need a slim and light Windows-based PC.

Thin, Light, but Sturdy

1. Like most ultrabooks, the HP Folio 13 is very thin and light. It's not the thinnest or the lightest, but it feels very solid and sturdy. If you're tired of carrying your heavy, clunky laptop around, this ultrabook will be a refreshing change.

Backlit Keyboard

2. The backlit keyboard is an essential feature for those who work in dark places, e.g.: a radiology suite, a call room, an airplane, etc. The keyboard is well built and is very comfortable to use, even in the dark. The keyboard has little flex, even though the overall device is very thin.

Long Battery Life

3. The HP Folio 13 has very long battery life compared to other ultrabooks. PC Mag tested it to have roughly 7.5 hrs and PC World tested it to have 6 hrs 45 min. Engadget estimates you'll get roughly 8 hrs of battery life if you use the power saver setting.

PC Mag gave the HP Folio 13 the "Editor's Choice" rating in Jan. CNET rates it "Excellent." The HP Folio 13 is certainly an enterprise-level product and it

Here is the only drawback that I would mention to the medical community: this laptop (like just about every other ultrabook or Mac out there) lacks a built-in VGA port. It has a full-size HDMI port, so you'll need to carry an HDMI-to-VGA adapter if your hospital or institution still relies on the old VGA port for monitors and projectors.

New Entrada app for Apple iOS devices revolutionizes mobile documentation for busy physicians and specialists

New Elegant Interface, Easy-to-Use Interface, Powerful Performance

NASHVILLE, Tenn., March 27th, 2012 — With the latest release of its iOS application available for Apple mobile devices (e.g. iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch), Entrada unlocks the productivity potential of clinics, hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers looking for innovative ways to accelerate and simplify the adoption of electronic health records, without experiencing the once inevitable loss in physician productivity. As noted in a recent MGMA survey, nearly 78% of physicians fear a significant loss in productivity while implementing an EHR. With the release of its new iOS app, Entrada helps alleviate these concerns by protecting the physician’s traditional, dictation-based workflow and providing a level of mobility and flexibility currently unachieved in the mobile health industry.
This tablet is only 0.31” thin and weighs just 12 ounces. Now if only this tablet came with a smart stylus pen, I might be tempted to get in line...

The Droid Xyboard tablets by MOTOROLA are 0.35" thin, so that's pretty impressive as well. The Xyboard is available as an 10.1" screen or an 8.2" screen. The 10.1" Droid Xyboard can use a smart stylus pen, but the smaller 8.2" does not.

The new iPad seems quite thick in comparison if you consider that it's now 0.37" thick. (the iPad 2 is 0.34" thick)

You'll see that I'm still a big fan of using a "smart" stylus pen with my tablets. Terminology around stylus pens can get quite confusing these days. Samsung has added to the confusion with their S Pen for the Samsung GALAXY Note (a 5.3" phablet - is it a phone or a tablet device) that comes with an S Pen stylus that uses a different technology compared to the N-Trig or Wacom-based stylus pens.

My main tablets these days are: the HP Slate running Windows 7 (uses an N-Trig stylus pen) and the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet running Android (uses an N-Trig stylus pen). Both of these use the same type of stylus pen, so I can switch back and forth. Neither are super-thin. Neither has built-in 3G or 4G, so I carry a 4G MiFi with me when I go out with a tablet.

Heat is never a good thing when it comes to mobile electronics. After all, heat can damage the internal components and degrade long-term battery life. (and if you're a guy, don't place that warm iPad on your lap too long... )
Most people refer to The new iPad as the "iPad 3."
AUSTIN, TX – March 14, 2012 – Dr. R. Dale Walker, from the Cherokee Tribe of Oklahoma, is a professor of Psychiatry, Public Health and Preventive Medicine as well as the director of the Center for American Indian Education and Research at Oregon Health and Science University and director of the One Sky Center. With a mission of improving the prevention and treatment of mental health and substance abuse problems and services among Native people, Dr. Walker averages approximately 50 site visits per year, during which he uses the Motion® J3500 Tablet PC to gather enormous amounts of information, such as the tribe’s history, activities, current state, problems and problem-solving methods.

“When out in the field, you want to eliminate as many things that could go wrong as possible, and the J3500 Tablet PC does just that with its battery life, ruggedness, power and performance,” said Dr. Walker. “Consumer tablets just can’t compute like the Windows®-based Motion Tablet PCs, and who wants to carry around multiple systems when you have everything you need in one device?”
In fact, the contest ran on a number of blogs.

Lenovo has issued a recall for certain ThinkCentre M90z & M70z All-In-One Desktops. Lenovo is voluntarily recalling 160,000 ThinkCentre M70z and ThinkCentre M90z all-in-one (AIO) desktop PCs worldwide sold between May 2010 and January 2012. Lenovo has determined that due to a failure of the power supply in the affected all-in-one PCs, the system can overheat posing a fire hazard. Lenovo has received two customer reports worldwide of fire that resulted in damage to the PC.

Introducing the NEJM iPad Edition

The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM.org) today announces its new iPad app, now available free for download in the iTunes App Store. The NEJM iPad Edition combines all content from the New England Journal of Medicine print issues with audio, share, search, and notation features in an integrated, easy-to-navigate format. This new app is the latest in a series of product enhancements and offerings from NEJM to create accessible, mobile solutions for today’s busy health care providers.

“Doctors don’t spend much time behind their desks. They are on the go, caring for patients,” says NEJM editor-in-chief, Jeffrey M. Drazen, M.D. “With the NEJM iPad Edition, relevant clinical information is right at our fingertips. Readers now have a way to carry multiple issues with them, make notes to share with colleagues, and show images in a meeting or on the floor of the hospital.”

Seems like a rather strange name, given that we all know that there will be newer iPads. This model resembles the iPad 2, but the biggest differences in the new iPad include:

Retina display

4G wireless through AT&T and Verizon

5 MP iSight camera

Faster processor

Slightly thicker than the iPad 2

For heavy web users, the 4G alone will be enough to get people to switch. I'm still on the first iPad and I plan to wait to see what the next iPad will be like.

I also have Evernote so that I can sync certain notes across all my mobile devices including my Android smartphone, my iPad, my Android tablet, and my Windows-based PCs.

Microsoft has announced that OneNote Mobile is here. Of course, to sync your notes on your mobile device with your PC, you need to have OneNote 2010 (and I'm still running Microsoft Office 2007 on most of my PCs at home and in the office). For now, I'm not planning on going out and purchasing OneNote 2010 for multiple machines if I can continue to use Evernote.

I plan to continue this ongoing test between OneNote vs. Evernote given that I'm syncing notes across a variety of different platforms include iOS, Android, and Windows 7.

OneNote and Evernote are great pen-based note-taking apps for those who still like to write and draw traditional notes on a digital device. If you don't use a pen, you'll find that these apps are still very handy if you want to sync many different notes across a variety of devices. You can also use a cloud-based app like Google Docs if you don't need pen-based input.

You will find slate tablet computers made by HP, Dell, Motion, Fujitsu, Asus, Lenovo, Samsung, and other manufacturers.

Mobile devices like the iPad and Android tablets are very popular among physicians. However, they are not able to handle the majority of enterprise level solutions. So, Tablet PCs running Windows will make a comeback in the health care field. Right now, these slate tablets come in two major categories:

1. Slow processor (Intel Atom), long battery life.
2. Fast processor (Intel i5, i7), but shorter battery life.

I personally prefer the smaller tablets because I can pop it right into my pocket. I also hope to see manufacturers release tablets that dock directly into a keyboard. We should be seeing some of those later this year, but I am going to wait for Windows 8 before I purchase anything new.
One of the best places to see all of the different devices is in the Microsoft booth. Of course, you could also wander around to the HP, Samsung, and Fujitsu booths.

Some of the notable tablet PCs running Windows 7 include:

HP Slate 2: a smaller, 7" slate tablet PC with excellent battery life

Fujitsu LifeBook Q550: a 10.1" slate tablet PC with a removable battery

Asus Eee Slate EP121: a 12.1" slate running an Intel Core i5 processor

Samsung Series 7: an 11.6" slate running an Intel Core i5 processor

These are some of the mobile devices you'll find on the HIMSS exhibit floor. I am waiting to see what will happen when Microsoft reveals Windows 8 this fall. We should see a surge of new tablet PCs putting some competition on other slate tablets like the iPad and Android slates.

HIMSS12 coverage is sponsored by HP. This device is an Android slate tablet that is similar to the iPad but includes several distinct features such as the following:

1. Optional active digitizer stylus pen for more accurate writing and drawing (similar to the type of pen that you'll find on Windows-based Tablet PCs)
2. Handwriting recognition software that will convert your scribbles into formatted text (remember the old Apple Newton MessagePad?)
3. Full-size USB port (so you can read those files from your USB flash drive)
4. Full-size SD card slot (full size SD, not just limited to microSD)
5. A mini HDMI port

This device is a nice tablet, but it's certainly bulkier and heavier than many other tablets on the market. Despite the larger size, the battery life just doesn't impress me on the ThinkPad Tablet. One of the main reasons why the battery life is limited is because the Wi-Fi remains on even when the display is turned off. There is an option that allows you to turn off the Wi-Fi when the display is off. Here are the instructions (from Page 38 of the User Manual):

Configuring the wireless network disconnect policy

To get longer battery life, manage your wireless connections more reasonably by configuring the wireless network disconnect policy.
