SENIORS: NEED TO SEND FIRST MARKING PERIOD GRADES TO COLLEGES?

Students requesting first marking period grades must complete a Request to Submit First Marking Period Grades (yellow form). This form is available in the UHS Counseling Center and should be returned by November 20th. This form should be used to request the submission of your first marking period grades to a college in which the pink request form was submitted prior to November 20th.

After November 20th, 1st marking period grades are automatically included when an initial transcript is requested per the UHS Request for College Applications Documents (pink request forms). The Request to Submit First Marking Period Grade Report form is available in the UHS Counseling Center.

The Technical College High School will be at UHS on 11/13 to present about the programs they offer. Please sign up in the Counseling Center to attend. The presentations will run as follows:

1st period: TCHS Career programs/Octorara Homeland Security program

2nd period: Allied Health- which will include Hospital placement, Sports Medicine, and EMT Services

3rd period: Teacher Leadership Academy

College and Career Readiness

Attention 9th, 10th, and 11th grade student: Counselors will be available in the small library classroom during Lunch & Learn from Tuesday, 10/22/19 through Thursday, 10/24/19, to answer questions regarding the PA State Required Career & College Readiness Portfolio. JEFFERSON SCHOLARSHIP:

The Jefferson Scholarship is the premier undergraduate scholarship at U.Va. Valued at more than $290,000 for out-of-state, it is awarded based on merit and covers the entire cost of attendance for 4 years at U.Va. In addition, the Scholarship provides a number of enrichment opportunities, including a study abroad experience. Students must be nominated by their high schools based on demonstrated excellence and exceptional potential in the areas of leadership, scholarship and citizenship.

If you are a senior and are interested in applying for this scholarship, please see the information provided here. To enter consideration for the Jefferson Scholarship, please write a brief paragraph stating why you believe you would be a top candidate. The paragraph should be no longer than 250 words. Please use a google doc or a word doc to share your paragraph through email with Mr. Findora at rfindora@ucfsd.net

The deadline to submit your paragraph is Friday, 10/11/19 at Noon.

Girls Volleyball

The Unionville girls varsity volleyball team won their league match against Oxford in 3 sets. Set scores were 25-8, 25-15, and 25-21. The team was led by Maddy Lowe with 6 aces, Sophie Brenner with 14 kills, and Kat Tuerff with 6 blocks. This win brings the teams overall record to 12-1 and league record to 8-0.

Boys Soccer

Boys soccer traveled to Oxford Tuesday afternoon and both teams came away with shutout wins. In game one, Kyle Ketterer scored two and Michael Hewes added another as varsity won 3-0. JV then took the field and finished 4-0 as Liam Martin scored two. Sam Klingenberg scored in a corner and Parker Wyatt has the last goal. The boys will next play at Coatesville Thursday evening.

Boys Golf

Congrats to the UHS Boys Golf Team for winning the Ches-Mont league title for the 5th time in a row. The boys were led yesterday by Jack Cooley who finished second overall after playing 3 playoff holes for the individual championship. The following boys have advanced and will be competing in the District 1 individual tourney next week:

9th Grade Boys Soccer

The 9th Grade Boys Soccer team defeated Downingtown West 1-0 on Friday. Captain Chris Ash buried a flick from Aiden Azar to get the decisive goal.

Girls Golf

We had our 8 best UHS girls golfers go to ChesMonts today and we are proud of their efforts on a very tough Applecross golf course. 5 girls out of 8 qualified to move onto the District 1 tournament next week. Congratulations!!!

The marching band had a great day this past Saturday at their first competition of the season in Downingtown. Not only did the band take first place in their division with a score of 82.4, they also won high percussion and high auxiliary honors. If you see a member of the band, congratulate them on their win.

The Unionville girls varsity volleyball team beat Octorara in three sets. Set scores were 25-16, 25-21, 25-14. The team was led by Sophie Brenner with 21 kills, Kat Tuerff with 8 blocks, and Maddy Lowe with 5 aces. This win brings our overall record to 11-1.

Cross Country

On Saturday the cross-country team competed at Carlisle. The boys team was led by Cole Walker's win and 15:29 PR and Ethan McIntrye's sub 16 run and 5th place finish. The team finished 7th in a loaded field. The girls were led by Marcella Krautzel and finished 12th. Both teams race this Wednesday at Great Valley.

Girls Tennis

Girls tennis hosted Radnor in a highly anticipated district 1 battle and came away with a hard fought win. Saanvi Garg led the way with a straight set win on second singles and come from behind victories on first doubles (Faith Ilgner and Jaclyn Santaguida) and 2nd doubles ( Catherine Stone and Josie Liu) in 3 sets were key to tying the score with 3 wins each. 4th doubles of Mauria Blair and Mia Maccario sealed the deal with a 6-0 win in the second set. It was a hard fought, well deserved team win. The team remains undefeated at 11-0 and travels to Coatesville today. Congratulations girls!

JV Girls Soccer

Henderson - 0

On Monday the JV girls soccer team beat a tough Henderson team by a score of 2 - 0. Unionville goals were scored by Sara Borlie and Katie Ketterer. Both goals were assisted by Josie Tucker. Come out Wednesday night for a great game versus Rustin under the lights!

Girls Volleyball

The Unionville girls varsity beat Boyertown in five sets. Set scores were 25-11, 19-25, 26-24, 23-25, and 15-3. The team was led by Ashlyn Wiswall with 46 assists, Sophie Brenner with 24 kills, and Kat Tuerff with 8 blocks.

The Unionville girls volleyball team won their match against Henderson in 4 sets. Set scores were 25-10, 23-25, 25-9, and 25-15. The team was led by Ashlyn Wiswall with 7 aces and 28 assists and Sophie Brenner with 13 kills. This league win brings the teams overall record to 7-1.

Boys Soccer

Boys soccer ended their matches Saturday with Perkiomen Valley with twin 1-0 wins. Varsity won in the first overtime with Michael Hewes scoring on a penalty kick. For JV, Hunter Darlington scored on a 25 yard hit in the first half and the team held in for the victory.

Boys soccer faced Henderson at home Tuesday evening. Jv started the night with a 1-1 tie. Henderson struck first in the first half and led 1-0 at the half. Barclay Wilson scored for Unionville in the second half on a brilliant cross from Luke Jackson. Varsity won 2-0 on goals by Grady Farrell and Kyle Ketterer. The 2-0 score marked the 7th shutout in 8 games by the Unionville defense. The teams travel to Rustin Thursday evening.

Cross Country

The cross-country program took their 7th ranked boys and girls teams in PA to Delaware to compete last Friday night. The teams showed their merit. The boys team was led by senior Cole Walker, who also recorded the fastest time of the day at 15:49. The boys team finished third behind perennial National Powers Severna Park and Downingtown West. The girls team was led by senior winner Marcella Krautzel and she helped lead the team to a 2nd place finish behind Severna Park. Both teams are off until next Wednesday's home meet.

9th grade Boys Soccer

The 9th grade boys soccer team followed up their 0-0 tie with Henderson last Wednesday with a 3-0 win over West Chester East on Friday.

The Unionville boys varsity golf team defeated Kennett today 196 - 210. The low round of the day came from Roy Anderson with a score of 37 (+2).

Unionville's record goes to 11 - 0.

Unionville's next match is Thursday, Sept. 19th at 3:00pm. It is a home match vs. Great Valley and it will be held at Kennett Square Golf & Country Club.

Picture Day is Tuesday, September 17th. All Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors: The nurses will be doing health screenings in the library on picture day. Please remember to come into the library large classroom to get your screenings done. If you wear glasses, please remember to bring them with you for your vision test.

UHS Gold Out

Friday Sept 13 UHS is going GOLD for Pediatric Cancer! Wear gold to school and at the football game. UTHON will be selling official GOLD OUT shirts during lunch and learn Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Two different designs to choose from, $15 each. All proceeds help support children with cancer. See Mrs Dilworth, room 288 for more info..

The Unionville girls volleyball team won their match against Kennett in three sets. Set scores were 25-23, 25-23, and 25-14. The team was lead by strong efforts from Emily Harper with three blocks, RaeAnn Dowling with 6 assists, and Sophie Brenner with 13 kills.

Cross Country

The cross-country program traveled to Rose-Tree Media Park on Tuesday for a tri-meet with Sun Valley and Rustin. Both teams opened the season 2 - 0 with convincing victories. The teams will compete over 5000 meters for the first time this Friday at White Clay Creek Park.

Boys Soccer

Boys soccer recorded a 2 for Tuesday with twin wins over Kennett. JV started the night with a 1-0 shutout win on a goal by Liam Martin assisted by Ben Trainor. The varsity boys then finished the sweep with a 2-0 win on goals by Kyle Ketterer and Michael Hewes. Mike also added an assist. The boys teams will travel to West Chester East on Thursday evening.

The Unionville girls volleyball team had an impressive win over Upper Merion in three sets. Set scores were 25-23, 25-18, and 25-20. The team was lead by Sophie Brenner with 17 kills, Genna Weeber with 10 kills, Emily Harper with 6 blocks, and Ashlyn Wiswall with 39 assists.

The Unionville Girls Volleyball team beat Cardinal O'Hara in 4 sets with set scores of 25-21, 20-25, 25-17, and 25-14. The team was led by Sophie Brenner with 18 kills, Maddy Lowe with 11 kills, and Ashlyn Wiswall with 42 assists.

Boys Soccer

Boys soccer traveled to Fleetwood Saturday to face the 2018 3A state champs. Jv started the night with a 2-1 win on goals by Barclay Wilson and Ben Trainor. Varsity completed the sweep with a 2-0 win. Sophomore Peter Murray scored his first varsity goal and Michael Hewes added the second. The boys will next play Kennett at home Tuesday evening.

9th Grade Boys Soccer

The 9th grade boys soccer team defeated Great Valley on Friday by a score of 1-0. Michael DellaBarba scored the game's only goal, which was assisted by Daniel Zhu. A strong back line helped goal keeper Justin Teufel record his second shutout.

9th grade boys soccer defeated Garnet Valley 1-0. Daniel Zhu set Michael DellaBarba up for another game winner. The boys next game is Wednesday @ Henderson.

Girls Tennis

Unionville girls tennis defeated Methacton at home 7-0.

Girls JV Soccer

On Monday the girls JV soccer game won a solid game against Kennett by a score of 4 to 0. Unionville goals were scored by Mary Nasarenko, Nandhini Parthasarthy, Julia Shaffer, and Katie Ketterer. Assists were made by Mirielle Sherman, Josie Tucker, and Kate Heister. Great win U!

There will be an informational meeting for any students interested in joining FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) on Tuesday, September 10 at 2:45 PM in Room 354. If you are unable to attend the meeting due to sports, stop by Room 354 during lunch and learn next week to sign up.

Attention Seniors: All seniors planning to attend college are required to attend one of the senior seminar sessions offered Wednesday, 9/4 - Monday, 9/9 during Lunch & Learn periods in the Cafeteria LGI. Sessions begin at 10:45 so students have a chance to get their food, and will run the entire period. Maximum of 75 students per session due to limited seating and space. An overview of the college application process will be presented including connecting your Naviance and Common App accounts as well as managing your school documents.

UHS Wrestling will offer an open gym every Wednesday night, starting September 4th, from 5-6pm, in the Auxiliary Gym. There is no cost and is open to all ages. No experience is necessary and first-year wrestlers are welcome! This is an excellent opportunity to get prepared for the upcoming season. Bring a practice partner with you as the coaching staff provides both technique and live wrestling. Coach Todd and his staff look forward to seeing you September 4th.

Boys Soccer

Boys soccer met rival Great Valley Tuesday evening at home for their first league matchup. JV started the evening with a 1-1 tie, penalty kicks being scored by both teams in the last 2 minutes of the game. Parker Wyatt scored the Unionville PK. Varsity followed up with a 4-0 win as Michael Hewes and Kyle Ketterer each scored 2. Garrett Pinkston, Alex O'Leary and Alex Dolce in net led the defense to their second shutout. The boys will next play a Saturday afternoon matchup at Fleetwood.

Girls Tennis

Unionville girls tennis hosted Downingtown West yesterday and won the match 5-2, sweeping all 4 doubles courts. The first and second doubles teams of Faith Ilgner and Jaclyn Santaguida and Catherine Stone and Josie Liu, respectively, posted outstanding wins against very strong DTW teams. Leah Walter won at first singles. The JV squad also won. Today, BIshop Shanahan visits Unionville.

On Thursday the JV girls soccer team beat Great Valley by a score of 3-1. Unionville goals were scored by Josie Tucker, Sara Borlie, and Mirielle Sherman.

Unionville's team score was 166 and Downingtown East was 176. This truly was a great match played by two of the best teams in the league.

The low round of the day came from junior Morgan Santaguida (Unionville) and sophomore Ava O'Sullivan (Downingtown East) who both shot a 38 (3 over par).

Unionville traveled on Tuesday to play Rustin at WC East. Unionville varsity prevailed with a 7-0 sweep on Varsity and a 7-2 victory on JV. Leah Walter at first singles battled for a tough win on first singles against Cassandra Hung. Straight set sweeps on all courts improved the overall record to 4-0. Dtown West travels to Uville on Thursday.

Boys Soccer

The varsity boys played at Talon Stadium Tuesday evening vs Strath Haven. Unionville played a strong game, handily defeating Haven.4-0. Goals were scored by Michael Hewes, Haden Quillman, Anthony Zucchero and Kyle Ketterer. Both teams will play Great Valley at home Thursday evening.

Girls Volleyball

The Unionville girls volleyball varsity team lost a tough season opener to Garnet Valley. Set scores were 23-25, 16-25, and 22-25. The team was led by Sophie Brenner with 17 kills, Kat Tuerff with 6 blocks, and Ashlyn Wiswall with 23 assists. The team will face Great Valley next Thursday.

Cross Country

On Friday the cross-country program opened their season with impressive performances at the Oakbourne Relays. Both teams proved their top 10 state ranking with great early season racing. The girls finished 4th, just 41 seconds out of first over an 8 mile relay, and the boys team finished 2nd to perennial powerhouse Downingtown West. The teams are in action this Saturday at the Unionville Two Mile BASH.

Boys Soccer

The boys soccer teams traveled to to Pennwood Friday morning. For varsity, the game was a 2018 playoff rematch. Varsity played the first game and dominated the match winning 7-1 as Kyle Ketterer scored 3, Michael Hewes 2, and Evan Dougherty scoring the 6th. The final goal was a self goal. Not to be outdone, JV also win 7-1. Ben Trainor and Liam Martin both scored 2, with the other goals being scored by Zach Jackson, Jack Watson and Parker Wyatt who added 2 assists as well. This Tuesday evening, varsity will play Strathaven at the Philadelphia Union stadium, while JV will play Haven away on Wednesday.

MAIZE GENETICS AND BREEDING RESEARCH LABORATORY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF PLANT AND SOIL SCIENCES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE is now accepting applications for the 2019 Plant Genetics/Breeding Summer Assistantship Program. Through research projects on natural variation in maize, the Plant Genetics and Breeding Lab at the University of Delaware (https://sites.udel.edu/wisserlab/) will sponsor six undergrad/high school assistantship positions during the Summer of 2019. This opportunity will allow students to work alongside scientists and students with a range of expertise. Assistants will be involved in breeding for environmental adaptation and multiple disease resistance. The application for this assistantship may be found enclosed. Please share with interested students. Any questions may be directed to Tecle Weldekidan (tecle@udel.edu).

EVENTS, ACTIVITIES, AND DEADLINES

AP Test Takers

Attention AP test takers for Wednesday, May 15th and Thursday, May 16th.

Morning AP Test Takers: Students should arrive by 7:30 AM and will be dismissed from school immediately following the exam (approximately 11:40 AM) due to Keystone testing.

Afternoon AP Test Takers: Students will be excused from attending school in the morning, provided they have a parent's note, and should arrive by 11:40 to take the afternoon exam. Students who are unable to get their own transportation may attend the abbreviated morning schedule but will need to pack their lunch to eat in the cafeteria between 11:00 and 11:30. Students will be dismissed from school immediately following the exam. Since Wednesday's AP Macro-economics exam is shorter, it will be possible for students to take the bus home at the end of the day at 2:45. The bus transportation home option is not available on Thursday afternoon for AP Statistics due to the length of the exam.

Testing Center during Keystones:

Please note that the Testing Center 352 will be open for testing from 7:30 a - 10:55. The testing center will close promptly at 10:55, students will not be permitted to stay after the 10:55 dismissal bell

Baseball

The varsity baseball team beat W.C. Rustin today by a score of 3-2. Andrew Humphrey pitched 5 innings for the win with Sean Matson finishing the game on the mound for the save. Henry Goodier went 2-3 with all 3 RBI's. Our next game is Monday at home vs. W.C. East.

Freshman Baseball

The Freshman Baseball team's season comes to an end with a 4-2 loss to West Chester East. Ben Baccellieri, Nate Holt, and Andy Li combined to pitch 6 innings allowing only 4 hits, 1 earned run and 2 strikeouts. Conner Brookes was 2-2 with a walk. Grant Hineman was 1-3 with a double and a run scored. Owen Geiger was 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored. The team finished with a 3-8-1 record.

UHS Girls Basketball Workouts

Open Gym Workouts for Girls Basketball have now begun. They will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the UHS Main Gym from 5:00-6:30pm. Please contact Coach Ellzy with questions at fellzy@chesco.org.

West Chester University is offering dual enrollment courses to UHS seniors.

In order to qualify you must have:

1) A minimum of a 3.0 GPA to apply.

2) Be able to provide your own transportation.

3) Understand that students would need to leave UHS after period 4.

4) Met with your school counselor to discuss.

The following courses are being offered Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 1:05-1:55PM at the West Chester Graduate Center:

-Introduction to Anthropology

-Legal Environment of Business

-Introduction to Geospatial Technology and Analytics

-Elementary Japanese

-Calculus III

* Descriptions for each course can be found on pages 52-53 of the course selection guide which is available on the counseling center website. Each are 3 credit courses.

Track and Field

The track and field program solidified their division championships with strong showings at the league meet tonight!

Congrats to Makayla Bucci for breaking her own school record in the 400 -- 58.39 and Jack Miles for winning the pole vault and tying the school record at 14-0. Event winners included Lynsey McCarthy, Meghan Hart and Cole Driver.

The team will compete at the Novice Champs this Friday at Kennett and at Districts next week at Coatesville.

Baseball

The varsity baseball team pulled together on Senior day and beat Great Valley by a score of 2-1 in 8 innings. Seniors Ethan Lindner, Sam Biddle and Jack Opdahl all contributed singles. Jason Granato pitched a great game and Stevie DeNucci got the win on the mound. Henry Goodier led off the 8th inning with a single, Connor Schilling, as pinch runner, stole second, advanced to 3rd on the throw and scored on an Alex Pelegrin sac fly. Our next game is Thursday at WC. Rustin.

JV Baseball

JV baseball team broke a 4 game winless streak with a 6-4 victory over Great Valley. JJ Williams pitched a complete game and timely hitting by Ben Ciccarelli paced the team's win. Next game is Thursday at Rustin.

Freshman Baseball

The Freshman Baseball team defeated West Chester East on a walk off 2 RBIs double by Jeremy Sauerbaum. The offense was led by Sauerbaum, Ben Baccellieri who was 2-3 with a run scored, and Jack Casten who was 2-3 with an RBI. Carter Parise pitched a complete game for the win. Parise allowed one earned run and struck out four East batters. Parise also scored the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning! Great team win today. Our record improves to 3-7-1. Our last game is Thursday at West Chester East.

AP Reminders 2019

Exam Cancellation:

· Students must submit an exam cancellation request through Total Registration website. Go towww.TotalRegistration.net/AP/394955

· Students must also complete a cancellation form available in the Counseling Center to receive the partial refund in mid-June.

Exam Day:

· Students are required to arrive by 7:30 am for morning AP exams.

· Students are responsible for providing their own transportation to school for AM exams and from school after PM exams.

· Once testing has begun, no student will be admitted to a testing room.

· Most exams are approximately 3 ½ hours.

· Testing room locations will be posted the week prior to AP exams.

AP Exam Rules 2019:

· Food and drink are not permitted during the exam.

o At the designated ten-minute break between sections of the exam, students will be permitted to have a snack and drink outside of the exam room. Students who elect to bring a snack and drink will have it stored in a container outside of the exam room until the designated break. Students should label their snack and drink.

· Backpacks are not permitted in the testing room. Due to limited room space, students should leave backpacks in their locker or if they do not fit, students can drop off their backpacks in the Counseling Center before reporting to the exam room on the designated test day. Students are not permitted to access their backpacks until the exam is over.

· Cell phones and smartwatches are prohibited. Do not bring cell phones or smartwatches to the exam room.

· Mechanical pencils are not permitted. Students should bring #2 pencils and black or dark blue ink pens.

· Morning exam students will go to the cafeteria following their exam. Afternoon exam students will attend 1st lunch prior to their exam.

· Only approved calculators permitted for the following exams, please bring your own.

o Biology four function (with square root), scientific, or graphing calculator.

o Calculus (only graphing calculator)

o Statistics (scientific or graphing calculator)

o Chemistry (scientific, graphing, or four function calculator)

o Physics (scientific, graphing, or four function calculator)

o Students are responsible for reading the AP Bulletin provided in their AP class and can be accessed at https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/pdf/ap-student-parent-bulletin-2018-19.pdf

SENIORS:

FINAL TRANSCRIPTS: Your attending college requires you to submit a copy of your final high school transcript. Some schools will not allow you to register for classes until they have received it. We will send the majority of these transcripts electronically. For those postal-only colleges, you will need to provide your counselor with a regular business size envelope addressed to the college and one stamp. Students do not need to complete another release form to send the final transcript.
