I have refactored my tile engine a bit, and converted everything over to XNA 3.0. Also, I have been working on some 2d animation classes that would resemble in a skeletal system, and use key frames. Right now it is in a very basic form, and is based on what James Silva used for Dishwasher. Along with the character animation classes, I have worked on a mapping system for a platformer that doesn't use tiles. This will allow me to use this engine for both top down and side scrollers, with basic tile engine, and a more complex "platformer" engine. I don't have any screens for this yet, but I will post some updates as I progress.

Circuinator - DBP Entry

Ok, so I came up with this crazy idea during lunch at work on Friday... It was to try and create a game over the weekend and submit it for the Dream Build Play competition. The game is rather simple in nature, and I think it turned out pretty well. The play area has 4 colored bars that run right to left, a single bar in the middle that runs top to bottom. The left hand side, there is a turrent that shoots out bullets down the colored bars when the corresponding button of the same color is pressed. Enemies start from the right, and progress towards the left. You must kill the enemies before they hit the bar in the middle. If the enemy hits the bar that is in the middle, it progresses towards the left. If it reaches the turrent, it is game over. As the game progresses, the bars change colors, and the enemies spawn faster and faster.

Here are some Screen Shots of Circuinator:

And here is a vid from YouTube:

Tweaks to GameDevKicks

I wasn't quite satisfied with the design I started with for GameDevKicks.com. When I first started I was thinking of trying to keep it nice and small, but the more data I threw at it, the more I thought it should be a bit bigger. So I updated the theme and made it wider, instead of fitting a 800x600 screen, I updated it to a 1024x760 resolution. I have also fixed a few bugs that happen in certain browsers, mainly IE 6.

Besides the UI changes, I also did a lot of tweaks on the back-end for SEO purposes. This will make the pages much easier to navigate via search engines and bookmarks, etc.

I am open to any tweaks/suggestions that you would like to see on GameDevKicks.com, just drop me an email to info AT gamedevkicks.com.

Updated Site to Graffiti!

I finally got around in moving this site over to asp.net and a different hosting provider. I am still looking for or going to learn how to create a custom theme for graffiti. I think I have most of all my posts and everything moved over. If not, email me and I can fix it.

GameDevKicks - WordPress Plugin

I just finished creating a nice and simple little plugin for WordPress that replaces any instances of “<!--gdkkickit-->” into a GameDevKick “Kick It” image and link. I haven't tested it on anything lower than 2.5.1, but should work with 2.x. If not, please drop me a line and I will look into fixing it. You can find more info about it here.

GameDevKicks Kick It WordPress Plugin

This is a very simple WordPress plugin that replaces any instances of "<!--gdkkickit-->" into a GameDevKick "Kick It" image and link. This is to reduce the amount of steps to get a post to GameDevKicks.com. Normally, one would:

Write a post

Submit it to GameDevKicks.com.

Get Kick It code after submission.

Edit original post to add code.

This seems like too many steps. Now with this plugin, the steps decrease dramatically:

Write a post, and at the end of the post, put <!--gdkkickit-->.

This cuts the steps down to just 1. How cool is that?! Also, I have created an Edit screen so you can customize the colors of teh Kick It image, just like if you would have gone to GameDevKicks.com and did it there.

Version History

1.0 - Initial Release

I have started a few different side projects other than XNA. I finally have got back to my TileMap Engine, and have made great progress to what I before in the first version. I have fixed my 2d RenderTarget issues, and added a few new features. I have even started to refactor my code into it's own dll so I can develop a nice little utility to make my maps with. I am posting 2 screen shots of my new tilemap. The first shows rotation, and just has 1 layer because I was testing at the time, and the 2nd shows 2 layers, and a shader applied to the map to change the color.
