Frankie Edgar vs Ben Henderson staredown pic from UFC 144 weigh-ins

That includes the two headliners for tomorrow night's event at the Saitama Super Arena, Frankie Edgar vs. Ben Henderson. Both came in one pound under the limit, just to ensure nothing gets in the way of their lightweight championship showdown.

Not so for Quinton Jackson, who badly missed weight for his co-main event bout against Ryan Bader. The fight will go on nonetheless, as "Rampage" has forfeited 20-percent of his purse to his opponent.
UFC 144: 'Rampage' Jackson misses weight for Ryan Bader fight, forfeits 20-percent of purse

Quinton Jackson just couldn't resist that two dollar fried chicken at the local 7-Eleven.

The UFC 144: "Edgar vs. Henderson" weigh-in event took place tonight (Fri., Feb. 24, 2012) in Japan, and "Rampage" broke the scale when he came in at 211-pounds for his light heavyweight bout against Ryan Bader, who was on point at 205-pounds.

Jackson was interviewed by UFC color commentator Joe Rogan after weighing in but, curiously enough, his weight didn't come up during the course of the brief conversation.

Maybe Rogan was playing it safe after they beefed in the media recently.

Later, though, Jackson spoke on FUEL TV and revealed he suffered through injuries during his training camp that didn't allow him to run and do the cardiovascular conditioning his used to. And while he wouldn't reveal the details of what exactly his injury was, he did say he cut as much as he possibly could.

Thankfully, the fight will go on, as Jackson will forfeit 20-percent of his purse to Bader, who accepted the bout at a catchweight. What's a few extra pounds amongst enemies, right?

UFC 144 weigh in results video LIVE from Japan for 'Edgar vs Henderson'

The official weigh in event for UFC 144: "Edgar vs. Henderson" took place tonight (Fri., Feb. 24, 2012) from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

And all was going swimmingly until Quinton Jackson, who got the biggest reception of the night, mind you, hit the scale and nearly collapsed the stage. "Rampage" weighed in at a whopping 211-pounds for his light heavyweight bout against Ryan Bader, who agreed to take 20-percent of Jackson's purse in exchanging for continuing on with the fight.

Old Quinton must not have been able to resist that two-dollar 7-Eleven fried chicken.

UFC 144: "Edgar vs. Henderson" will be headlined by a 155-pound title fight featuring number one division contender Ben Henderson, fresh off his unanimous decision win over Clay Guida, taking on reigning lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.

In addition, a welterweight clash between Jake Shields vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama is on tap, as well as a light heavyweight tilt between Quinton Jackson vs. Ryan Bader.

Ghosts of Saitama: Legends rise and fall while heavyweights titans collide at Final Conflict 2005

The roar of the crowd ... the sound of bare feet shuffling against canvas ... the unexplainable electricity inside the building. They are all mere echos today as crowds in the tens of thousands have dwindled down to a fraction of that amount. The Saitama Super Arena, host of this Saturday's (Feb. 25) UFC 144 event, has been home to some of the greatest mixed martial arts (MMA) events in the history of the sport. "Ghosts of Saitama" will take a look at some of those moments, forever preserved and never forgotten.

Ask anyone who was a mixed martial arts (MMA) fan before the boom created by The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) for a list of all-time great events and one name will surely find itself on each and every list.

Final Conflict 2005 at the Saitama Super Arena.

PRIDE Fighting Championships (PRIDE) had, the year prior, collected some of the world's best heavyweight and pitted them against each other to decide who among them was the best. It was Fedor Emelianenko who rose to the top after defeating the likes of Mark Coleman, Naoya Ogawa and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

It should have come to no surprise to anyone as "The Last Emperor" was the reigning heavyweight champion with only one murky loss attached to his name. He had already defeated "Big Nog" to win the title and it seemed the only other heavyweight who could potentially challenge the champion was Mirko Filipovic.

But "Cro Cop" was brutally knocked out by Kevin Randleman in the first round and missed his date with destiny. Eager to get back into the title shot hunt, the Croatian went to work. In the 16 months between the Randleman loss and his fight at Final Conflict 2005 with Emelianenko, the kickboxer fought seven times, finishing all but one of his opponents.

Aside from the most anticipated heavyweight bout in the sport's short history, the event only presented the last three fights in the 203-pound grand prix. Four men -- Mauricio Rua, Alistair Overeem, Ricardo Arona and current champion Wanderlei Silva -- looked to emerge as the tournament winner. Silva had won the previous in 2003 but Brazilian Top Team rival Arona was looking to unseat him.

Little did anyone know it would end up being "The Axe Murderer's" own teammate who would emerge the world's best light heavyweight.

Let's take a closer look.

The show opened up with a tournament reserve bout between quarterfinalists Kazuhiro Nakamura and Igor Vovchanchyn. The battle-worn Ukrainian fought valiantly but Nakamura proved to be too much of a challenge. The judoka took the decision after 15 minutes of action.

"Ice Cold" would never step inside the ring again. His body was too tired, after 10 years of fighting, to continue. Vovchanchyn was an MMA original before the phrase MMA had even been created. He simply was born too soon, arrived in the sport too early to truly be recognized as one of the greats.

The next bout, the grand prix semi-final between Arona and Silva, was the 2005 equivalent of the Carlos Condit/Nick Diaz fight. Arona played the role of Condit, a sometimes overlooked but extremely talented fighter to Silva's Diaz, violent, exciting and popular.

Like "The Natural Born Killer," Arona stuck to his gameplan. He avoided prolonged striking exchanges and kept Silva on his back as much as possible. It worked. After two rounds, the bell sounded and everyone in the arena and watching at home -- including Arona who laughed in Silva's face -- knew the champion had finally been defeated.

Hoping to salvage some honor for their training camp, "Shogun" took on Overeem in the next semi-final bout. Early on, it didn't look good for Chute Boxe. A pre-Ubereem "The Demolition Man" took the fight to his Brazilian opponent and nearly finished him off with his infamous guillotine choke. "Shogun" survived and ended up pounding Overeem out a little over halfway through the first round.

The finals were now set. An all Brazilian affair between the two biggest and most honor training camps in the country. Ricardo Arona representing Brazilian Top Team (BTT) taking on Mauricio Rua backed by Chute Boxe.

The next two fights saw Fabricio Werdum and Hidehiko Yoshida each pick up submission wins over their opponents. The Brazilian sunk a triangle choke in on Emelianenko training partner Roman Zentsov while the Japanese judoka used his gi to smother and choke out original Ultimate Fighting Championship bad boy David "Tank" Abbott.

It was finally time for Fedor versus "Cro Cop."

Nearly 50,000 fans packed into the Saitama Super Arena to see the fight. And not a single one was disappointed.

From my History in the Making on the historic bout:

The champion is still controlling the pace of a fight where Filipovic has looked as timid as most of his own opponents have looked in the past. But a stiff jab from "CroCop" later and Fedor's leg buckles slightly underneath him and the crowd erupts.

Mirko, with fire in his step for the first time in the fight, throws one, two, three jabs as Fedor begins to back up. A wild, looping hook from Fedor causes Mirko to duck and he loses his balance. He continues to press the fight and unexpectedly tries to take the Sambo Grand Master down. Fedor reverses this and ends up standing in Mirko's guard.

The Russian would prevail leaving "Cro Cop" to once again play second fiddle. He came up short againt "Big Nog" two years before and it wouldn't be until 2006's grand prix where the Croatian would be recognized as the champion he truly was.

The show closed with the grand prix finals. Less than three minutes into the bout, Arona narrowly avoided getting stomped in the face by "Shogun" but Rua's hammerfists would find their mark. Clubbing the BTT member in the jaw until unconscious, the young Brazilian went from promising prospect to number one light heavyweight on the planet.

Legends rising and fall, mere men ushered into MMA immortality ... all in a night's work for the Saitama Super Arena.

More from the "Ghosts of Saitama" series:

Dan Hardy talks tough UFC road, getting his swagger back against Duane Ludwig

Losing his last four fights inside the Octagon, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight contender Dan Hardy is seemingly hanging onto his Octagon career by a thread.

A one time title contender, Hardy has fallen on a rough streak over the last two years after starting his UFC career off impressively with four consecutive wins. While admitting that his title shot may have been a bit premature, "The Outlaw," took the challenge of attempting to dethrone the promotion's 170-pound king, Georges St. Pierre, at UFC 111 in March 2010.

After fighting valiantly for five rounds, including surviving several near fight-ending submission attempts, Hardy came up short in his bid to win UFC gold.

From there, his woes only increased, as he dropped his next three bouts to Carlos Condit, Anthony Johnson and most recently, Chris Lytle. Surprisingly, the British brawler was not cut from the promotion, as it seemed that company owner, Lorenzo Fertitta, appreciated appreciated Hardy's efforts.

Hardy recently spoke to Fight Hub TV to talk about his rough two year stretch, which included the passing of his grandfather, and what he feels contributed to his bad run of luck during his losing streak.

"I had a tough run leading up to the UFC. I've had ups and down throughout my career, fights won and fights lost, robberies and being settled by promoters and stuff. So when I got to the UFC, I kind of felt like that was out of my system. I had a four fight win streak, I felt good, I gained some recognition, and then, kind of all of a sudden I was in a title shot situation. It felt a little early for me but, obviously you don't turn down an opportunity like that. I did a 14 week training camp for it and in the build up for it, I lost my grandfather and that kind of really threw me out. I never think I really got myself back on track after that. He was very important to me and to my career. If it wasn't for him, I probably wouldn't have carried on with mixed martial arts through my teenage years. The title fight was tough, but all I could do was give it everything I had, which I do feel like I did do. I had a short break afterwards, but since my profile had been raised, and my recognition grown,it was difficult to kind of get away from it. Everybody wanted to talk to you and wants a piece of you, and all eyes are on you because you stuck it out and went five rounds with the champion so people automatically think you are going to go on and do big things. So, I had a lot to live up to, which originally when I joined the UFC, I didn't really feel like I had to because I was always counted out anyway and my goal was to get to the UFC. The first four fights were kind of a no pressure situation. You know just go in there and just doing what I loved. From the title fight, the pressure started to build and it kind of threw my rhythm out, I lost my swagger. Fortunately, the UFC has given me another shot and I'm going to make the most of it."

With another, and quite possibly his last, chance to earn a victory inside the Octagon, "The Outlaw" looks to make the most of it, as he takes on Duane Ludwig at UFC 146 on May 26, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ludwig and Hardy, two fighters who prefer to exchange on the feet, will provide fans with what is sure to be a fireworks-filled bout. However, with his UFC career possibly on the line, will we see a cautious and tentative Hardy? Or will he return to what brought him to the dance in the first place, his aggressive stand-and-bang style?

Thoughts?

UFC 144: Jake Shields ready to bounce back in 2012, would like to face Carlos Condit again

Riding a 14-fight win streak into his highly anticipated Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debut, which included dominant stints under the Elite XC and Strikeforce Banner, Jake Shields' time in the worlds preeminent mixed martial arts (MMA) organization, thus far, has been a rough one to say the least.

After narrowly escaping his debut against Martin Kampmann at UFC 121 with a razor-thin split decision victory, Shields dropped his following two bouts to UFC Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and current top contender, Jake Ellenberger.

Prior to entering his fight with Ellenberger, Shields suffered a personal tragedy, as his father suddenly passed away. A distraught and mourning Shields, showing great composure and fortitude, chose to not drop out of his headlining bought against Ellenberger. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black-belt was eventually knocked out by "The Juggernaut" in the opening minute of the first round, the first time in 11 years that he had been finished in a fight.

It may have been rough rolling in 2011 but the former multi-division champion is ready to get back on the hog and ride in 2012.

Speaking to MMAWeekly.com, Shields discusses the hardships he went through the past 10 months, including the tough decision to fight two weeks after his fathers passing, as well as the current state of the UFC's 170-pound division.

"No, I don't know, maybe it would have been better to pull out, but you never know how those things are going to go, and at the time I did what I had to do, and I did it. I can't look back and wish I hadn't have done it. Unfortunately, things didn't go my way. I got caught with a knee, that was unfortunate. That was a tough time for me between losing my dad and then that, I wasn't feeling too great after that. I feel a lot better. I'm ready to bounce back and have a good year in 2012."

Shields also hopes to one day face the current UFC interim Welterweight Champion, Carlos Condit, to exact some revenge for his good friend and training partner, Nick Diaz, whom Condit defeated to earn the title at UFC 143:

"I feel like welterweight is really shook up right now for title contention. It's up for grabs for anyone really. With (Jon) Fitch losing, (Josh) Koscheck's last fight not being the most spectacular; the title's up for grabs right now. He (Condit) was calling me out last year, so I would love to fight him. He has the belt now. I mean GSP's still the true champ, but if there's time to get a fight in, I would love to be the guy to go out there and put on a great win and jump in there. Especially, like I said I beat him before, he just had that controversial win over my teammate. It's someone I'd love to go back and get some payback for Nick."

Condit and Shields originally squared off in 2006 in the finals of the Rumble on the Rock 9 Welterweight Tournament. Shields did enough to outwork "The Natural Born Killer" to earn a unanimous decision victory.

Now, six months removed from his second consecutive loss, Jake looks to right his ship this weekend (Feb. 25, 2012) in Japan at UFC 144, as he takes on Yoshihiro Akiyama, who looks to end his own three-fight skid in his UFC middleweight debut.

What do you say, Maniacs, will Shields return to his winning ways and spoil Akiyama's return to Japan in the process? Or will it be "Sexyama" that reverses his own fortunes this weekend?

Opinions, please.

UFC 144 fight card: Frankie Edgar vs Ben Henderson preview

Two of the best 155-pounders on the planet will meet and the UFC lightweight title is on the line tomorrow night (February 25, 2012) as UFC champion Frankie Edgar takes on former WEC lightweight champion Ben Henderson in the main event of UFC 144 in Saitama, Japan.

Frankie Edgar has finally started to come into his own as champion after putting on a serious of some of the best displays of heart in UFC history last year in both of his "Fight of the Year" candidates against Gray Maynard. You can never count him out of a fight and that's why he's champion right now. He's hoping to win decisively on Saturday night and not have to rematch his opponent. for once.

Ben Henderson was an afterthought when he entered the UFC after losing his WEC title, but three straight big wins in a row, including two against top title contenders earned him his shot at the championship belt. He's been on a mission ever since he was brought over and he's staring at the end game on Saturday night.

Will Edgar have "The Answer" for Henderson's grueling pressure-based attack? Can Henderson slow down Edgar's speed and footwork long enough to land his own attack? How does each elite lightweight secure a victory on Saturday night?

Let's find out:

Frankie Edgar

Record: 14-1-1 overall, 9-1-1 in the UFC

Key Wins: Gray Maynard (UFC 136), B.J. Penn 2x (UFC 113, UFC 118), Jim Miller (Reality Fighting 14)

Key Losses: Gray Maynard (UFC Fight Night 13)

How he got here: Frankie Edgar has been a perennial underdog. He never won a state championship, falling just short twice and did the same thing at Clarion University in Pennsylvania. He made the transition to fighting professionally in late 2005 and in just the sixth fight of his career, he was already making his debut in the UFC.

He competed as a lightweight because the UFC didn't have a featherweight division yet and won his first three fights impressively against top competition like Tyson Griffin, Mark Bocek and Spencer Fisher. His momentum was halted by the bigger, stronger Gray Maynard in April 2008, but that loss only fueled him to improve.

Just one year later, Edgar put on the best performance of his career against former lightweight champion Sean Sherk, outstriking his bulkier foe and stuffing the elite wrestler's takedowns. After an impressive stoppage of the then-undefeated Matt Veach, Edgar was handed a title shot because Gray Maynard hadn't defeated Nate Diaz decisively enough.

Edgar made the most of his opportunity, utilizing his speed and conditioning to outpoint the plodding B.J. Penn at UFC 113 in Abu Dhabi to shock the world and win the UFC lightweight title. He proved his victory wasn't a fluke by dominating Penn in the rematch at UFC 118, blasting the ex-champ with more powerful strikes, adding kicks and even takedowns to his arsenal.

His next defense was against Gray Maynard at UFC 125 last year and after surviving a horrible first round in which he was dropped four times, Edgar bounced back in Rocky-esque fashion to win three of the remaining four rounds and force a draw. He squared off with Maynard once more last year and this time, he took care of business after a rough first round to score a fourth round knockout victory.

In Ben Henderson, Edgar will be fighting a fresh opponent for the first time in nearly two years.

How he gets it done: Edgar's key to victory is his speed. He's got terrific footwork and tight, technical boxing. He's fast enough to dive into the pocket, land punches and exit at angles to get out of the way of his opponent's attack. He can definitely outpoint Henderson in the striking department if he's on his game.

What Edgar has to avoid is a defensive lapse early in the fight as he has tended to be a slow starter. They key for him is to find a rhythm in his stand-up and get comfortable out there as quick as possible. Once that happens, he's nearly impossible to stop.

Footwork and movement is going to be vital for Edgar as Henderson's biggest threat is the takedown and clinch. He needs to avoid getting cornered or surrendering a takedown at all costs as "Bendo" is big and strong enough to keep him in one place for an extended period of time.

If he can avoid those takedowns and accumulate some damage with his punches, he might get to the point like in the Maynard fight where he's comfortable enough to start throwing with some real power. Henderson doesn't have the best striking defense so there's a real possibility that Edgar can take over in the later rounds and put a beating on him with his superior boxing skills.

Ben Henderson

Record: 15-2 overall, 3-0 in the UFC

Key Wins: Jim Miller (UFC on Versus 5), Donald Cerrone 2x (WEC 48, WEC 43), Mark Bocek (UFC 129)

Key Losses: Anthony Pettis (WEC 53)

How he got here: Ben Henderson was a two-time All-American at Division II Dana College while earning a double degree in criminal justice and sociology. Instead of pursuing a career with his degree, he tried out amateur cagefighting, compiling a 2-1 record and loving the sport enough to make it his job. It didn't take him long to be noticed. Henderson was fighting for Mark Pavelich's MFC within 18 months and earned an invite to the WEC just over two years into his professional career.

He was thrown into the fire immediately, earning stoppage victories over Anthony Njokuani and Shane Roller which earned him an interim WEC lightweight title shot against Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone at WEC 43.

Henderson was still green at the time, but he gutted through a multitude of submission attempts from the former bullrider, using his wrestling to outscore him positionally in what was voted Sherdog's 2009 "Fight of the Year." With the victory, he became the interim WEC lightweight champion.

He unified the titles by defeating incumbent champion, Jamie Varner with a third round guillotine choke and would once again have to face Cerrone for the title at WEC 48, the first and only pay-per-view the promotion ever attempted. In what was expected to be a repeat of their first epic war, the "Smooth" one, choked out Cerrone in less than two minutes to defend his belt.

Henderson would fight one last time for the WEC against the upstart Anthony Pettis. We all know how that played out, with the kick heard 'round the world. What some may forget, was the fight was incredibly close, entirely up for grabs until the final minute of round five.

In his UFC debut, Henderson put on a strong showing against submission specialist Mark Bocek and he followed it up with the most impressive victory of his career, a three round domination of then-number one contender Jim Miller at UFC on Versus 5. With the victory over Miller, he earned a match against Clay Guida and put on a show en route to another dominant and very exciting decision victory to earn his crack at the championship.

How he gets it done: Henderson has the overall skills to keep this fight standing if he wants to, but when was the last time you really saw someone put Frankie Edgar on his back and keep him there? If anyone can do it in the UFC lightweight division, it might be "Bendo."

I feel that the former WEC champ should have an advantage in the clinch, as this is an area where his size and strength advantage will benefit him the most. If he can cut off Edgar's escape routes along the fence, he could definitely wear on "The Answer" over the course of five rounds and really tire him out.

Henderson put a real beating on Jim Miller and Clay Guida when he scored takedowns and had his opponents trapped against the fence. He's got some ferocious knees

In the strand-up, Henderson would be wise to avoid regular exchanges in the pocket as his defense still needs some work. He definitely should try to keep from plodding around and letting Edgar utilize his movement and footwork to outmaneuver him.

Henderson is the stronger man, so if he can close the distance and try to tire Edgar out with pressure, that could be key for him.

Fight X-Factor: The biggest factor for this fight has to be speed. Can Ben Henderson keep up with Frankie Edgar for up to five rounds? He's big and strong, but how effective are those attributes going to be against someone as quick as Edgar who's going to be darting all around the cage? If Henderson can't cut Edgar's escape routes off and close the distance either with clinch or takedown attempts, it could be a very long night for him.

Likewise, if Edgar can't avoid being pinned against the fence or remain off his back, out in the open, it could feel like he's drowning slowly, except he'll also be getting punched in the face.

Bottom Line: This is such an intriguing stylistic match-up. It's all about speed versus strength and size. Both men are masters of their craft and watching them try to impose their will against each other for potentially up to five rounds is going to be a real treat. It's tough to remember the last time either of these men were in a boring fight as they've accumulated a large amount of post-fight bonuses recently. Even if Henderson can keep Edgar in the clinch or score takedowns, this fight should still be very exciting as I expect reverses, sweeps and some very active strikes over the course of 25 minutes. I have incredibly high expectations for this fight so stay tuned.
