Here are a few opportunities to assist at our biggest event yet, the our Science Expo in Balboa Park, predicted to have between 15-30,000 science enthusiasts! Volunteers will receive a science festival T-shirt.

MicroBlitz – We are looking for science graduate students to lead middle and high school student groups in a microbial BioBlitz. Groups will collect samples that will later be sequenced searching for novel microorganisms. The last microbliz piloted in New York’s central park discovered over 200 novel microorganism species! (Shifts: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, 12:00 – 2:00; 2:00- 4:00; 4:00 – 6:00)

Evaluators: Friendly volunteers needed to help document this first-time event by talking to families to learn who they are and what they think about the Festival; responses will be recorded on PDAs and laptop computers, so volunteers should have a basic comfort with these technologies; training will be provided in the morning before the Festival; for this unique volunteer opportunity, volunteers will be treated to lunch on the day of the Festival. Please note: Evaluators must be at least 18 years of age. (32 volunteers are needed. Shift: 11-6)

Concierge: Direct people to various activities throughout the Park. Concierge positions are both inside participating museums and outside in the Park. (Shifts: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, 12:45 -3:45 pm, or 3:30 - 6:30 pm)

Stage Manager: Help us manage entertainment on the various stages throughout the event. (Shifts: 10:30 - 6:00)

If you are interested in helping out, please email the position you are interested in and the shift that you can work to jbabendure@ucsd.edu.

Thank you for your support of the San Diego Science Festival!

Welcome to the new and improved GradLife Website. This site will serve as a resource for graduate students at UC San Diego, connecting students with information, resources, tips, events, and more to enrich their lives and fill their time. The main page features articles on topics of interest to graduate students, from career guidance to stress management to dissertation writing. The page also highlights announcements of potential interest, and students can subscribe to receive news and announcments in a feed reader (such as Google Reader or Bloglines) or by email. The site also features a comprehensive events calendar highlighting events of particular interest to graduate students, as well as links to other campus and community events. Above all, this should be a resource that supports graduate students in their personal and professional development.

Poster Submissions due: March 27

GSA and OGS are pleased to present the 9th annual All-Grad Research Symposium on Thursday, April 16 in the Price Center. We invite graduate students from all fields to present their work to peers in a professional and intellectually stimulating atmosphere. This year we have selected the theme of Memory. Memory can obviously mean many things and be applied in many contexts. This is a purposeful choice. It is our hope that we will receive as many divergent interpretations on this theme from as many disciplines as possible. For paper presentations we are looking for 10-15 minute presentations. For the poster session/competition we seek displays that highlight the range of research being conducted across campus. We are also interested in featuring a display of works of art which highlight the idea of Memory, broadly interpreted.

The submission deadline for paper presentations has been extended to March 25. Poster/exhibit proposals may be submitted until March 27. Presenters must be currently enrolled UCSD graduate students. Graduate students, faculty, staff, post-doctoral fellows and undergraduate students are welcome to attend the free symposium, which will feature a catered lunch and afternoon reception. For more information on the symposium, to submit an abstract for a paper, poster or exhibit, or to register to attend the symposium please see http://gsa.ucsd.edu/all_grad_symp

UCSD’s own Carolina Galleguillos and Dennis Franco, two computer-science graduate students who perform and record together as Juna, insist that their dark, sensual synthesizer pop — a layering of computer-generated beeps and waves that wind in and out of Galleguillos’ cavernous, dangerously high pitch — is more a “mood” than anything else. It’s a silky studio-basement study of massage-parlor pop that blueprints its atmosphere on moody greats like Portishead, Enya and chilled-out Bjork, picking up momentum for first-and-only EP “Heartbeat” from car-commercial darlings like Telepopmusik and vague memories of the early-’80s American and Latin-American pop charts.
