Sometimes, knowing a secret at work can put you in a pretty uncomfortable position.

One woman found herself there after a colleague told her she planned to leave when her contract was up.

Normally, that probably wouldn’t have been a big deal.

But part of her job is planning staffing for the next year, and lately, she’s noticed her colleague doing less and leaving problems for someone else to deal with later.

So now, keeping her plans quiet could end up creating a whole lot more work for her down the road.

My colleague has been expressing her dissatisfaction with our company’s new management team (which she is also a part of, but she is the old guard) recently, and she told me she plans to quit/stop renewing her annual contract after this term.

On paper, I’m a subordinate (below the management team), but I get elevated authority during a 3-4 month period every year where I am responsible for planning staff allocations for the next year.

When my colleague told me that she plans to quit, she didn’t specifically say that she wanted it to be kept a secret, but I understood that she told me her plan in confidence.

Under normal circumstances, this would be no problem.

Normally, her deciding to not renew her contract wouldn’t be a big issue because the company always asks us whether we’ll renew our contracts 4 to 6 months in advance.

The issue is, since she is fed up with management and with her job, she’s pretty much been doing the bare minimum.

I don’t mean just doing what her job description says and ignoring everything else that’s not in the JD. It’s things like delaying communications just enough that processes slow down but not enough to cause disciplinary action, sweeping things under the carpet for the next guy to deal with, etc.

Unfortunately, she doesn’t like management either, but she has a job to do.

On the surface, she’s doing her usual job, but there are subtle things that won’t get noticed if you don’t have to deal with them daily. And their effects will compound enough that a 4-6 month notice may not be sufficient to offset.

I personally am not that fond of our new management either, but I can work with them, and I think they’re just going through teething problems, nothing too major.

Regardless of my opinion, I have a job to do, and my colleague’s borderline malicious compliance behaviour is going to make my job more difficult in the near future.

Now, she’s torn about what to do.

On the one hand, I could just tell management what is happening, what I am noticing, and have them act early. That would make the transition from my colleague to her successor smoother and make my job easier in the future. But that would mean going against my colleague’s wish to keep her plan secret.

On the other hand, if I honour my colleague’s wish, I would be setting myself up for more work in the next few months. The company would probably recover eventually, but it won’t be painless.

I can’t let the company know without personally identifying her either because she has a unique role, and any detail I need to tell management to get them to plan ahead would give her away. Personally, I am tempted to just tell management.

Neighbor took over our parking space

We’re in Ecuador and moving to another apartment.

For context, a lot of private homes and small apartment buildings here are conjoined like condos and each place has a front gate, so you can park your car in front of the building and it’ll be safe from burglars.

Anyway. We chose this apartment, which has a parking space in front.

But there was a problem right away.

The day we get the keys, we realize that we can’t open the large gate to park our car inside.

That’s when the neighbor from the second floor came down. They briefly introduced themselves, and quickly claimed the parking space as theirs.

We already knew this wasn’t the case, but didn’t want to start a fight, so we simply called the owner to explain the situation and re-confirm that the space is supposed to be ours.

Owner talks to the neighbor, who then goes back to us, basically begging us to let them use our parking space because of the convenience and because they have small children and blah, blah, blah.

The owner’s compromise is less than ideal.

By now, the neighbor has already planted their car in our space.

During all this, it’s discovered that the neighbor changed the locks on the large gate without the owner’s knowledge or permission, sometime after the previous neighbors from the first floor moved out.

So what happened? The neighbor clearly has no intention of budging, we don’t want to cause a fight because we’re not like that, and I don’t know if the owner either can’t or won’t do anything about it, because all the owner did was offer us the parking space of the building next door. It’s like a house I think, with a gate and two yapping little dogs that run outside when the gate is open.

OP doesn’t think this is fair.

On one side, at least we’d have a safe parking space. But on the other side, it’s going to be an inconvenience, and I’m ticked that the neighbor took over our space just like that. Because the neighbor already has a designated spot.

It’s horizontal, so the car needs to be parked in reverse and requires more maneuvering.

Our spot lets you go straight in, easy peasy.

I think the neighbor had always been planning on taking the parking space, and seized it as soon as the prior tenants moved out.

It’s not fair. It’s their parking spot. Let the neighbor upstairs take the other parking spot by the yappy dogs.

So there’s been a few incidents.

A few weeks ago I was going to an 18th birthday party that had a business casual dress code. I decides to wear a turtle neck, long sleeve black dress that went almost to my knees.

Her dad didn’t like the dress.

This is the first time I’ve ever worn a dress and Dad was my ride just in case I decided to have a drink or two.

Mum approved the dress, she’s the one who picked it out.

I wasn’t showing anything, I had everything covered but he said he wasn’t going to take me when I was dressed like that.

I spent money to get dressed up, I made an effort. It was the first time I was going to see my friends in a long time.

She literally didn’t have anything else to wear.

He told me I needed to change but I didn’t have anything else. It was this or jeans and a work shirt

So I called my friend and his girlfriend and asked if they could pick me up and went with them

When I got home, my dad was being horrible to me about it

I lost my temper and told him to leave me alone, which I’ll admit was unnecessary but I was fed up

My friend is 3000km away and still got me a birthday present so it meant a lot.

He was aware because we talked about it.

I got upset and broke down because it was the final straw after a long week at work

It seems like her dad has anger issues.

The other day I told him I was going to pick up some antidepressants and anxiety medication.

I shut the front door as I was talking to him and he yelled out of nowhere, telling me to leave it open.

I said that it’s a door, it can be reopened, please dont yell at me, as I opened it again.

I was walking away, trying not to cry because it was the first time I was picking up antidepressants

Why should she have to be the bigger person?

I called him a jerk.

Mum then got upset at me and told me to stop being immature and to be the bigger person

She’s dealt with these types of problems for a long time.

All of this happened within the past 4 weeks and there’s so many times stuff like this has happened.

It’s all I’ve ever known and I’ve only just started to change how I react to him so I genuinely don’t know if I’m in the wrong here.

I’m so tired of blaming myself over and over again, I hope I’m not in the wrong but I need a second opinion.

Peace and quiet is one of those things you don’t really appreciate until someone takes it away.

One woman is learning that after a group of six kids started spending hours every day at the park outside her building.

The apartment itself is quiet, which is one of the main reasons she moved there in the first place.

But somehow, the screaming from outside still carries all the way up to the sixth floor.

I’m currently living in this apartment. It’s quite expensive for the town and area I live in, and I’m on the 6th floor. The main thing when moving for me was a quiet space. I have not been able to hear a single noise from inside of the building. Outside is quite busy, but noise reduction is great.

Well, except for this one group of little kids. It’s 6 of them, and all they do is scream at the top of their lungs when they’re playing.

They live in the building and go to the park outside my window every day. Mind you, it’s TUESDAY, 11 am, and they are screaming, crying, and squealing at the TOP of their lungs. There is no break from it, and the parent is there every day with them for multiple hours. Just non-stop, inconsistent, high-pitched screams every day.

She doesn’t want to cause issues, but it’s getting to be too much.

Like, I hate to cause issues, and I’m sorry, but like, can’t the mother tell them to quit it with the excessive yelling? Not saying they should be silent, but like, come on. This is genuinely driving me to madness, and I didn’t move here just to listen to this same oversized family.

Is it messed up if I try and contact someone in the building about them and ask if they can limit the nonsense yelling that happens for hours every day? Also, it’s Tuesday. Why are the kids not at school?

Also, I know kids are kids and they are just playing, but please understand this sounds like an elementary school recess that’s taking place right outside my window every day for multiple hours. And like, I can barely hear the cars or motorcycles on the street, so why are ur kids that loud?

I thought construction that’s taking place next door was the loudest noise to deal with, but no, apparently it’s this group of children that’s 6 whole floors below me and by the other side of the building.

Here’s what she’s going to do.

Not once have I heard another person outside make this amount of noise. Quite frankly, I actually don’t hear anyone else at all, really. Just them, and nobody wants to hear them. I certainly don’t.

Obviously, I don’t want to be rude, but I also deserve my peace and quiet. Waiting a few extra minutes for food is one thing. But watching employees play on their phones while your order still hasn’t been made is another.

One man ran into exactly that after ordering dinner for himself and his pregnant wife.

The app said the food would be ready in about 15 minutes, so he gave the restaurant a little extra time before heading inside.

But when he got there, two teenage employees were on their phones, and his order still hadn’t been started.

My wife (22) and I (26) decided to order some food tonight and chose to pick it up.

This casual fast food restaurant is a chain that doesn’t have a lot of locations, but there is a good amount. The app said it would take about 15 minutes, so we got there 20 minutes after we placed the order.

I had my wife just stay in the car because I figured we would be in and out. She is pregnant and feeling lousy, so she didn’t mind.

When I walked in, two teenage employees were on their phones, and no one else was there. They had two orders already prepared, but neither of the names matched mine.

After the experience, he’s considering filing a complaint.

They asked what my name was, and then, once they confirmed they had my order, they said it would be about 5 minutes. And then they sat back on their phones for the next five minutes. I was waiting to see if maybe some other employees would come out from the back to help, but after about 5 minutes, they put their phones away and started making my order.

While they were making my order, 3 people walked in looking for their order and then walked out when they didn’t see their name. The workers finished mine and went to the next order. I thanked them, and they continued to work.

I am wondering, would it be wrong if I called their manager tomorrow about the experience? I don’t want to get free food or the employees fired, but the restaurant does ask on their receipt, “How was my visit?”

There are some things you just don’t say to a pregnant woman, especially when you don’t even know her.

At 36 weeks pregnant, one first-time mom was finally starting to feel more comfortable with her changing body.

Then she went shopping with her mom and ended up with a cashier who apparently had no filter.

As soon as it was her turn to check out, the woman looked at her belly and immediately commented on how big she was.

The mom tried to let it go, but then the cashier asked if she was having twins. That was enough to make her finally speak up.

I am a 28-year-old first-time mom. I’m currently 36 weeks, or 9 months, along and due in June.

I’ve struggled with body image before, and during this pregnancy it’s been particularly hard, obviously, and I was just getting to a point where I was starting to feel comfortable with my changing body.

I’m also someone who avoids conflict and doesn’t speak up at all, so this pregnancy, if anything, has given me a voice for once.

The cashier was rude from the start.

So, I was checking out at a newly reopened store. My mom was checking out ahead of me.

As my mom approached, the cashier told her she had to pick everything up off the counter after she put it on and back up so she could sanitize.

The tone was a little bossy and not so pleasant, which is only important to the story because we were already a little irritated. I understand that this practice is now important, what with everything going on.

So that’s how we started off. Then it’s my turn to check out; we have had no previous conversation before the next interaction, which is as follows:

Then, she started commenting on the woman’s size.

Her: “WOW, you’re big!! When are you due?”

Me: “June.”

Her: “And you’re THAT big?!”

Me: (said nothing, tried to let it go)

Fed up, she put the cashier in her place.

Her: “What are you, having twins?!”

At this point, I literally glared at her over my glasses, thought for a minute, and kind of let her have it by saying, admittedly with a good deal of attitude, “You know, you don’t comment on someone’s size.”

By that point, Mom had already seen the writing on the wall and had run away real quick, by the way. The woman said nothing else, put my receipt in the bag, and shoved the bag towards me.

Now, her mom keeps saying she overreacted.

When my mom and I got in the car, my mom proceeded to say how I unleashed all fury on her and how “she wasn’t commenting on me, she was commenting on how the belly is big.”

I said it still isn’t okay. You just don’t comment on things like that to a stranger. Not to mention, I am due in a few weeks, so for her to act like I’m so big for where I am is just ridiculous!

So now I’m feeling a little guilty because my mom made it seem like I overreacted, but I’m also just angry because now I feel all self-conscious all over again.

Some parents mean well when they try to give their kids advice about jobs and careers, but some parents also go too far and pretty much dictate what their children will be when they grow up.

My dad and I have always had a rocky relationship.

For over 2 decades now he has kind been looming over my life like a dark cloud.

He’s a very no nonsense kind of guy who hates it when I even watch stuff that “doesn’t make me develop”. This includes anything animated, comedic, or just fictional in general.

As well, he is very dismissive of my feelings and my family’s too.

My brother came out to tell our parents that he’s had depression for years now and my dad just tried shaming him for it.

My sister just got into a new craze about a game she really likes, but when she tried telling him about it he just fell asleep.

I’m starting college like 2 years later than I should’ve because he kept me home to get Real Estate and Dealership licenses.

His dad works a lot.

I know that he’s very stressed out all the time because he has 2 jobs, one of which is a used car Dealership he built himself.

But now he wants me to work there as well to save himself money.

However, if I’m being honest, there is nothing in the world I would want to do less.

His dad seems very judgmental.

Ever since I could remember all he’s been is just awful to me.

He constantly shames me for not having friends (again he kept me from college), not leaving the house enough (even though I go to the gym a couple times a week), for being too dependent on my mother (even though I almost never ask her for help if I think it’s too much for her), and for not being “man” enough (because I like fictional things).

Idk I’m just tired of him in every sense of the word.

He doesn’t want to work for his dad.

Every time I try talking back to him he just says I’m being lazy and making excuses.

There is not 1 memory I have of him where he didn’t try to lecture me about something.

I have no desire to work with him. I don’t care if he lends me a car from the dealership, I don’t care if this will help the family, I don’t care anymore.

He needs to get out of that house and follow his dreams. Go to college. Stop letting his dad dictate what he does. His dad is only holding him back.

When you live in an apartment complex, you run into your neighbors on a regular basis, which can be a blessing or a curse.

What would you do if one of your neighbors started being really rude to you for no reason that you can think of, and even blocked off your parking spot?

That is what happened to the young lady in this story, and she is desperately trying to find a way to get the harassment to stop. Unfortunately, the neighbor is careful not to do things in front of others, so it is hard to prove.

How to deal with a rude neighbour

For context, I’m 21 and she’s in her 40s and been my neighbour for some time. In the last year, she has decided to hate me.

It is awful when someone despises you for no reason.

We live in a unit complex, so there are some shared spaces. I tend to keep to myself and try not to bother anyone, whereas she will get into other people’s business very unnecessarily.

So, this is one of the latest incidents of how she is rude to me. She started parking ridiculously close to my car to the point I couldn’t come out a couple of months ago, so I parked in someone else’s spot (u7), which I have written permission to use from them.

How is she being allowed to do this?

This is where she decided to chain that spot up, and now I can only temporarily use another’s neighbours spot (u13) until this is sorted.

So, I went to Raine and Horne about all this, where they assured me that I will be able to park in u7 but its been a week or so, and shes still refusing to unchain the spot.

She has also decided it is now her new storage space where is using it like a shed.

Nobody is willing to take action.

Just a side note, she claimed I was a bully for calling her a bully, even though I’ve asked her at the start of year to leave me alone a couple of times and ignored her ever since then. She is the one that is always initiating contact.

I’ve tried going to my real estate agent, and she was not helpful. I tried contacting Raine and Horne, and man are they hard to get a hold of. This is just the latest of several many incidents with this neighbour.

People like this are snakes.

Raine and Horne has acknowledged that she has troublesome behaviours, but since she’s the chair of body corp, everyone seems scared to do anything about her.

In general, she has been quite hostile toward me, but only does things usually when people can’t see or hear. She tends to nice to you for a little, but seemingly randomly turns on you.

A couple of others neighbours said it happened to them. But since she keeps on a front for most neighbours, they can’t believe that she can be a bully.

This is harassment, honestly.

She also decided it’ll be a great idea to smoke right by my bathroom windows, which are sometimes open. Again we’re in units, so my place isn’t big.

The smoke from her cigs travel easily into my space. I also have cats and this concerns me since all this second hand smoke won’t be good for my cats or me.

She feels helpless, and it is easy to see why.

There is more I could say about her, but you get the idea. I do acknowledge that my feeling are hurt and that can cloud my judgement, and honestly there’s not much I can do anyway.

I have already told her to leave me alone, stopped contact with her, written emails to my agent and Raine and Horne about her, contacted youth law, the non emergency line thing about another incident, spoke to neighbours etc.

This is a very difficult situation.

Again, I have tried many many many ways to get this lady to back off but she won’t. It’s like the more I try to get her to stay away from me the more aggressive she becomes.

Legally speaking, I can’t do anything unless I wanna go the VCAT or IVO way, but she hasn’t done anything enough for the IVO to go though and the VCAT process sounds brutal.

It is easy to see why she is so frustrated.

All I really want is for her to leave me alone, but nothing I’ve done has worked. It’s been a year of this and I am so over it.

Any advice would be appreciated. Sorry for such a long post.

Hey all, I have a short story for you today. At the time of this story I was working for a major toy store a friend of mine had gotten me the job and I was working in the video games department.

When you work in retail, you get to deal with all sorts of kids.

I have worked retail in some fashion or another for a long time and have seen a ton of awful children and I have seen parents ranging from amazing (our hero today) to straight up abusive (story for another day).

Today is the story of one of the best parents I have ever seen.

He doesn’t usually have to deal with the customers.

At this point I had been promoted to R-Zone trainer, so I didn’t do much actual customer interaction anymore. I was around specifically to train employees, manage stock, and keep up our displays in our video game department.

It was a very strange pseudo management position (all the responsibilities none of the pay). But this day we had several people call in, so I was actually on the floor helping people.

Crying kids are so loud.

The company I worked for had a warehouse layout as most big box stores do, so when a child lost their mind over not getting whatever toy they wanted, the whole store could hear it.

Worse yet, because of how the buildings layout was if a child threw a tantrum the sound basically got piped directly into the employee bathrooms. Ya try taking care of business when you have a mainline to a screaming child, ya nope not pooping today.

Let’s get into what actually happened.

Now the story. It had been a pretty slow day as most toy stores are during work hours on a weekday. A young mother (20 something) came into our store with her 2-4 year old child (I am terrible at guessing the age of children.)

He was old enough to be talking. She smiled at our greeter plopped her little one into one of our carts and headed off into our store. I go about my business sprucing up my department reorganizing and making it look nice.

When her little one decides he wants something and she isn’t getting it for him. Que a sounds similar to a fire alarm and nails on a chalk board just a high pitched screech with a dry stutter.

Kids can be annoying, no doubt about that.

Before I continue, I honestly really do not like children, mostly because of situations like this where they are just loud and obnoxious and I am used to parents letting their kids get their way instead of showing restraint and discipline, which just gives them incentive to be little brats.

So, I figure she is going to cave and give this little wailing banshee what he wants.

This must have been hilarious.

Nope the mom is unfazed and she lets him scream his little head off for about 5 minutes or so (felt like an eternity). He starts flailing and kicking in the seat on the cart. Supermom has had enough.

Supermom glares at him then lays down in the isle in our store face first and begins screaming and flailing just like her son. It was truly a sight to behold a 20 something woman having a full blown tantrum, the irony was beautiful.

Mom really knew how to shut her kid up.

I did not know that children that young could get embarrassed, but apparently she did. That little screeching monster shut his mouth and looked around red faced and embarrassed.

Supermom got up looked at him and said. “You done? Good.” She went about her business bought a few things and left and I did not hear another peep out of her son the rest of the time they were in.

Kids often respond well to unexpected things, so I think it could work.

If I ever have children I am actually interested to try this out and see if I can get it to work.

It can be so fun to see parents do something unexpected that really works and gets their kids to behave properly.

Most people appreciate a simple thank you, but not everyone thinks it’s worth starting an argument over.

That became a problem for one man after he held the door open for a couple walking into an ice cream shop.

When neither of them acknowledged him, he sarcastically said, “You’re welcome,” as they passed.

After my wife walked in, I held the door open for a couple.

As they walked past me, they didn’t say thank you, so I proceeded to say, “You’re welcome,” sarcastically.

The other guy didn’t take it lightly.

The husband turns around and says, “What?” and I said, “You didn’t say thank you after I held the door open for you.”

He then proceeds to say, “You better look after yourself,” and I end it with telling him to watch his mouth.

I’m a firm believer in common courtesy, despite being a bit of an *******, but I do know how to function in a society.

We are renting a duplex.

Our 65-ish elderly neighbor we never met or talked to before came by in the middle of the night at 1 am.

He made a racket that woke our dogs, with so much banging.

And also used our yard waste.

I went back inside. I’ve saved the recordings.

But she doesn’t know how to deal with him.

I found out who it was by talking to my other neighbor.

He has permission to use their cans, and they were next door, but he used ours.

Could have pulled forward 2 inches and been at the right cans. What should I do?

Whoa! This honestly sounds like trespassing.

There’s only so much effort you can put into inviting someone who never responds.

For one mother-in-law, that frustration had been building for a while because her daughter-in-law was terrible about answering texts and calls.

I have been having issues with my DIL recently. She is awful at communicating. She has ADHD and never responds to texts or calls. It is frustrating and annoying. It makes planning almost anything feel like pulling teeth.

One recent example: My son’s birthday was two months ago. I texted and tried to call her to ask if he had a collectible (he is a big collector). She never got back to me. I bought it anyways, and he already had it.

Another example: inviting her to a girls’ night. I had to call my son to ask her, and yes, she wanted to go because she wasn’t checking her phone. I feel like I am communicating with a child.

Then, the call came in.

I have talked to my son and her. Nothing has changed. I am tired of trying to chase her down for an answer and getting no response. She does it with everyone.

So I decided that I was only going to send a single invite to things, and that was it.

Two weeks ago, I sent her a text saying the women in the family were going to get drinks yesterday. She never responded. I took that as a no, and we got drinks without her.

People posted pictures online, and I got a ******-off call today. She was upset that she wasn’t there. I told her I invited her, and it’s not my fault she missed out.

Now, she’s not sure what to do.

We got into an argument about me not tracking her down, and I told her she is a grown adult.

My son called me soon after and said I could be more accommodating due to ADHD and that I know she has trouble with communicating. I told him that isn’t my problem.

He wants me to apologize, and I don’t think I did anything wrong. I don’t apologize if I don’t mean it.
