We’re constantly bombarded with stories about awful people with no regard for the folks who live around them, and we’re getting tired of it!

In today’s story, a person talked about a neighbor of theirs who sounds like a real handful.

“I’m from India. My street is a dead-end road, and most of us clean the portion of the road in front of our own houses.

A few years ago, the owner of the house opposite ours, an elderly woman who lives alone, moved in after her tenants left.

In the beginning, we had a good relationship.

The issue started with how she cleans her property. Every morning, my mother and a few neighbors clean the street.

Yuck!

Later in the day, the lady pours a large amount of water in front of her house and pushes all the mud, leaves, and dirt onto the road.

Since the road slopes toward our house, everything ends up in front of our gate.

My mother politely asked her to use less water, but she continued doing the same thing.

Eventually, they had an argument, and my mother stopped speaking to her.

It’s about to get even dirtier.

Now she’s adding another floor to her house, and the situation has become worse.

She often lets her sump overflow, flooding her compound, and then sweeps the water mixed with cement, sand, and construction debris onto the street.

Again, because of the slope, most of it ends up outside our house.

They’re not the only neighbors who are upset.

She’s also had similar disputes with the neighbor on her left because construction debris kept entering their compound.

My mother no longer argues because it never changes anything, but cleaning up their mess is super frustrating its painful to watch her do this.

Sometimes, speaking up at work tells you pretty quickly what kind of company you’re dealing with.

One employee learned that only a month after starting a new job at a private business.

After her manager criticized the way she handled a customer, she tried to explain herself and bring up some concerns of her own.

But instead of having a calm conversation, the manager became increasingly aggressive and sent her home early.

Then, the employee called the owner to explain what happened and ended up getting fired.

AITA for disrespecting my manager

I started work at a private business about a month ago.

The owner of the store, Ellie, is the boss, and Mira is the manager.

All employees have had a poor history with both of them, from what I’ve heard (screaming matches, aggression from both).

She told the customer what to expect and headed back to her store.

A few days ago, I walked a customer over to the sister store (as I was trained to do) to help her find a ring she was looking for. The customer said our store’s rings were out of her budget, but she liked the style.

I took her to the store that is more affordable and has the style she likes. I complimented some of the stuff we had in the other store, let the customer know they have super cool stuff that’s more affordable in this store, and went back to my store.

Today, Mira had me go into the office to talk to her. She said what I said in the other store was extremely inappropriate and said the manager and worker in the other store were extremely offended.

Honestly, she had no idea her words offended anyone.

I was shocked and said I had no idea that’s how they felt about it. I tried to explain, but Mira stopped me and said the others’ feelings are what actually matters and I need to see outside of my own head how I affect others. I came up with a solution to try and avoid this again so I don’t accidentally step on their toes next time.

Mira accused me of being defensive and unreceptive to her coaching.

Since we were already talking, I told her I also had a few concerns.

I brought up the way Mira makes passive-aggressive remarks, how she lets her bad day affect her attitude toward us, and how employees are scared to come into work.

At this point, Mira got louder.

Mira got angry and started getting aggressive, cutting me off, and not letting me speak. She said, “Give me an example.”

I gave an example from a week ago: a customer with **** tattoos came in and was targeting one of the Black employees. Reasonably, they were very upset and weren’t talking to other customers as much when he was in there, and cried in the back when he left. Mira told them to get over it, essentially.

Before I could finish, she interrupted and said I wasn’t there, that’s not what happened, and repeated what happened, but added that it was their fault for not talking to employees and crying.

She tried to reason with Mira, but it wasn’t working.

By now, Mira was standing over me very closely, raising her voice and flailing her arms at me aggressively. So I told her that right now was a very good example, and that the aggression she exhibits creates a hostile work environment.

She said everything I was saying was gossip, laughed sarcastically, said I was disrespectful, and that I need to grow up.

I told her being able to healthily communicate is a part of growing up. She told me I had to go home early, so I left. The entire duration of the conversation, I was very mellow-toned and calm.

Unfortunately, she got the same response from the owner.

I called the owner to bring up this concern. A similar thing happened, which I expected, and then she fired me. She said if there are already so many issues in my 1 month of employment, she doesn’t see this being resolved in the future.

I told her, “Alright, I already found another job.”

We said bye.

AITA?

Geez! That sounds like a terrible place to work anyway.

For starters, the manager shouldn’t have gotten so aggressive. Generally, the more calm you can keep a conversation, the better it goes.

Yet, at the same time, it came across as if the employee was just trying to turn the situation around to take the heat off her.

In all, it sounds like the job was a bad fit for both sides, so ending the relationship was probably for the best.

Folks, it’s time to get brutally honest: I think my biggest current pet peeve is people who listen to music on their phones in public without headphones.

In fact, I’m so fired up about this, I’m considering writing my Congressman to introduce a bill to make it illegal.

That’s how annoying it is!

Well, to me at least…

In today’s story, a high schooler talked about how they got some petty revenge on a group of kids who forced everyone on a bus to listen to their terrible music.

Became the Bluetooth Bandit.

“I live in South Asia.

When I was in 12th grade, a bunch of new 11th graders started taking the same college bus as me.

They had that “we’re the coolest people here” attitude and would blast Nepalese rap through the bus speakers every single day.

The problem wasn’t just that it was loud. It was 5:30 in the morning.

This sounds brutal…

We had to listen to it for nearly an hour on the way to college, then again on the ride home. The songs were full of profanity, drug references, and degrading lyrics. It got old very quickly.

Several students, including me, politely asked them multiple times to either lower the volume, use headphones, or at least play something everyone could tolerate that early in the morning.

They ignored us and even complained about us behind our backs.

Time for a plan.

So I came up with a harmless solution.

My bus stop was the first one on the route, which meant I was always the first passenger on the bus.

Every morning, I’d connect my phone to the bus’s Bluetooth before anyone else got on. Then I’d put in my earbuds and pretend I was listening to my own music.

Worked like a charm!

When the group got on, they tried to connect to the Bluetooth but couldn’t. They would disconnect my phone, and I would connect again before they could.

After a while, they started asking everyone on the bus if anyone was connected to the speakers.

The rest of us just shrugged and said no.

This went on for months.

They never caught on.

Sometimes I let them use it in the morning just so it wouldn’t become too obvious, but most of the time the bus stayed blissfully quiet. The rest of us finally got to enjoy a peaceful ride instead of being forced to listen to their playlist at dawn.

Petty? Absolutely.

Worth it? Also absolutely.”

I (16F) have, at best, a rough relationship with my father. I only see him during school holidays. Nowadays, I do not even visit him.

Two months ago, my dad’s mum had a fall. She was taken to a hospital near me.

It is states away from the rest of the family. It took two months to find out where she even was.

I had to hear from her what happened.

This teenage girl started visiting her grandmother every Tuesday and Saturday.

Since then, I asked my dad to take me to visit her. That was when he came to my state to visit her.

He has been insistent that I do not.

I started visiting last Saturday. Now, my sister and I, along with my mum, visit every Tuesday and Saturday.

I met aunts and relatives I had not seen in decades. This is because my dad has a horrific relationship with his brothers and mum.

Now, she’s wondering if she was wrong to visit her without telling her dad.

My sister and I talked about it while we were traveling to see her last Tuesday.

We agreed not to tell our dad. He is known to have blow up reactions. We did not want to deal with that.

AITA for not telling my dad I am visiting his mum in the hospital? And meeting relatives he has tried to keep me from?

When family ties are strained, it’s quite difficult to make decisions like this.

Wanting to see a hospitalized grandmother is completely understandable, especially after being kept apart.

However, I think keeping it a secret may complicate things, especially once OP’s dad finds out.

“I work with someone who is constantly complaining…when he’s the problem.

He’s difficult to work with and aggressive in how he speaks, and then complains that management doesn’t like him.

He used to vent to me before but now I feel super uncomfortable because I have a great relationship with management.

He tells me that’s because I have favoritism and leeway and he is treated differently.

Nothing is ever this guy’s fault…

Framing it this way makes him think he isn’t the problem and invalidates my work ethic.

I get the same scrutiny, but I don’t lash out, I accept feedback whereas he feels as though he’s being cornered.

This perception of his is causing friction between us where he thinks I have more favoritism at work.

He takes out frustration he has at management on me because I’m his “peer” …how should I approach this?

That time I made a cashier cry by being reasonable.

A few years ago, I had stopped by a well-known fast-food place on my way home to get breakfast for everyone. I got to the counter, made my order, and then, when she asked if there was anything else, I decided that since I was there, I’d get some ice cream.

She took a deep breath, grabbed the counter, and said, “I’m sorry, the ice cream machine is down.”

I shrugged and said, “Okay. I’ll have a [type] pie then.”

She looked at me. Her eyes got wide and watered, and soon she was outright sobbing. I had no idea what I’d done.

Suddenly, the manager came to see if everything was okay.

The manager came out to see what was wrong, and I explained the situation.

Then I said, “Is it the pie? Are you out of pie too? It’s okay; I probably shouldn’t be eating sweets anyway!”

And the cashier just sobbed harder.

The manager gave her a comforting hug and said, “Sorry. The guy in front of you was a real ****.”

Aww! She probably still remembers what he did that day.

Getting cast in your very first show is supposed to feel exciting, not like something you need to defend to your closest friend.

One 19-year-old with zero theatre experience but a strong singing voice auditioned for Hairspray at her friend’s encouragement, expecting little more than a spot in the ensemble given how many people applied.

Instead, she landed the role of Amber, the show’s mean-girl villain, while her friend, an experienced performer who’d already done three shows with the group, didn’t make the cast at all.

AITA for sticking out the play despite my friend not getting in?

We are 19F. I’ve never done theatre before, but I can sing really good.

My friend is a theatre kid who can sing, dance, and act. She told me a few months ago to audition for the play her theatre group is doing called Hairspray.

Getting cast in one of the shows has always been competitive.

She’s done 3 plays with them so far and loved it.

A lot of people applied to do Hairspray.

Before, everyone would get into every show, but due to the amount of people who applied, they said not everyone who auditions will get in.

So after that, I didn’t have much hope of getting in.

The process itself was no joke.

It wasn’t one you audition for a specific part. We sang a song for them and did a dance audition, which I’ve never done dance before, whereas my friend is really good, so I thought she would get in.

A week ago the cast list came out. I’m a girl named Amber in it who’s a mean girl type role. The main villain of the show and a dancer.

Whereas my friend didn’t even get into the ensemble.

Her friend got really mad at her.

She’s really upset, especially because she’d performed with them before and she’s a better dancer and actor than me. She was upset but kept asking me if I was sticking it out.

I said yes.

She kept asking me how rehearsals were going.

I said it’s stressful to have to memorise the lines and dances, and I wasn’t even expecting to get in let alone as anything more than the ensemble. And that some of the ensemble were rude to me getting a good part.

So her friend pushed her to back out all together.

She told me I should quit the show then.

I said I’m committed.

She kept trying to convince me to leave.

One day I posted an Instagram story from rehearsals of the play, and my friend replied, “I really think you should quit.”

I said no, I enjoy the play.

She said I’m being selfish and I know plays are her thing, and so should just quit because I’m not emotionally invested like her.

Clearly this friend is dealing with some serious jealousy.

As a homeowner, it is your responsibility to keep your lawn properly mowed and looking nice.

What would you do if your neighbors always kept their lawns immaculate, so they complained about yours when you let it grow for two or more weeks at a time because of your busy schedule?

That is what happened to the guy in this story, so rather than mowing his grass, he planted a garden filled with plants that he knows his neighbors will hate.

It is rarely a good idea to intentionally upset your neighbors, but that is just what this guy did. And he thinks he is doing the right thing. Read through the full story below and see if you agree.

My wife and I work opposite shifts with her going in to work early morning and getting home in time for us to hug/kiss and then I’m out the door for my job that takes me past midnight.

This is a rough schedule, but it ensures the kids are watched.

I also work rotating weekends and am on call during bad weather. We have 3 children, the oldest just finished pre-k, so they are not old enough to be on their own.

In the rainy season, our grass gets pretty long because in order for mowing to get done, both of us have to be home, so this usually gets done every other week and that’s *IF* it doesn’t also happen to be storming.

It is important to find a way to keep your grass under control.

So, there are times the grass gets crazy. Both of our neighbors on either side of us are retired. They have all the time in the world to care for their lawn (but they hire people to do it for them anyway) and they look immaculate.

Our lawn, aside from the length, is free of weeds (bermuda grass tends to choke everything else out) and is overall taken care of.

There is nothing wrong with taking pride in your lawn.

So, our neighbors, because they have nothing better to do, will call the city and report our lawn’s “unsightly length” two or three times a month to try and “motivate us” to keep it cut.

And we’re talking the DAY AFTER I let it go for a week because I happened to be on call that weekend.

Maybe he should hire someone to mow. Or to babysit.

Now I have spoken with both of my neighbors about the time constraints that my wife and I have, it’d be one thing if we didn’t have kids or if they were older and my wife and I could go out and mow when we have the time.

But this has fallen on deaf ears. My typical work week is about 50+ hours in busy crunch time which, of course, also occurs in the rainy/mowing season but I assure them that when it’s a clear day and we’re both home, the yard work gets done.

Honestly, it isn’t their job to come up with a way to ensure he keeps his lawn nice.

This, of course, falls on deaf boomer ears. One of them called me lazy and that when THEY were young and married with kids they worked three jobs and made it work, and I just don’t take pride in caring for my lawn and blah blah blah.

Another one suggested that I mow during the day while my wife is gone and let the kids run around in the yard while I do so.

There are plenty of ways to make sure this gets done.

Yes that sounds totally safe, no way a 5, 3, and 2 year old are in ANY danger while I’m pushing a mower with a spinning blade. There was one time I was trimming with my kids outside and our 2 year old comes up and tries to stick his hand into the trimmer.

Yeah, no they need to be watched over while one of us is mowing. So, of course I was angry at their response.

So, he has time to plant a garden, but not to mow his lawn?

But being a mid-western American used to mid-west passive aggression, I got an idea. I’m just going to convert our back yard and alley into a garden, we’re talking “Hanging Gardens of Babylon” levels of ostentatious.

The tallest, bushiest, and vine-iest plants I can find. We’re talking pumpkins, sunflowers, corn, watermelons, berries, lavender. Even getting some stinky plants like onions, garlic, globemaster, or cleome (which benefit the garden because they attract bees and humming birds and repel leaf eating pests.)

This guy has some weird priorities.

The garden is going to be a THICC BOI surpassing ANY length or bushy levels my grass ever got. The added benefit is, while it’s a lot of work to start up.

Going out and pulling weeds is something safe I can totally do during the day with the kids running around in the yard.

It is never a good idea to antagonize your neighbors.

Our fences on either side are chain link, so all the smelly plants and tall-bois are going right along side the property line of the neighbors.

I’m calling it my “Spite Garden.” Everything will have labels like “Curb Appeal Cucumbers” and “These Peppers are Permitted” and my personal favorites: “*jack-off motion* Jalapenos” and the raspberries labels are a picture of someone blowing a raspberry, courtesy of my artistic wife.

He could put this effort into the lawn and keep his neighbors happy.

There are no city ordinance on gardens other than they cannot be in the front lawn and as long as I keep it maintained and weeded, there is nothing the neighbors can do.

I’ll never understand why people want to antagonize their neighbors. Their complaints were entirely valid.

One restaurant manager ran into that problem with an employee she’s known for nearly a decade.

The two had become close friends, but things changed when the manager decided to send another worker home early.

Her friend immediately accused her of being unfair and argued over who should leave first.

AITA for managing my friend?

I’m a manager at a small restaurant. I’ve been here for about 10 years, and I’ve worked my way up from part-time to currently being the Daily Operations Manager.

I have one employee (Katie, 50sF) who has been with me since the beginning, and we’ve gotten close in the past 3–4 years to a point where I consider her a close friend rather than an employee.

The other day, I decided to cut someone early (Theresa, 20F) as we were slow. Theresa was scheduled until 4:30, and I let her go at 3:30.

When Katie found out, she was upset.

Katie was scheduled until 4:15, and when she heard Theresa was going home first, she threw a temper tantrum.

Gabby (40s) was scheduled until 4. Katie went on a whole tirade about how wrong it was to cut someone early when they were scheduled later and that the first one scheduled out should be cut first.

However, even this logic wouldn’t support Katie’s tantrum, as Gabby was scheduled out earliest. I didn’t want to cut Gabby because she had been cut earlier in the week, and I try to be fair and juggle hours so no one really misses out.

Gabby was fine with this. Theresa was cut first because she was working 7 days in a row because we needed coverage.

Frustrated, she sent Katie home.

Katie was adamant that everything I was doing was unfair as a manager, and after her tantrum, I said in front of other staff who were present for this entire thing that if she was going to fight and fuss over a matter of less than 15 minutes between cuts, she could just go home too.

She refused and said she wouldn’t screw anyone over, in regard to if I cut Theresa, scheduled till 4:30, early, she wouldn’t screw Gabby by leaving first and possibly making Gabby stay until 4:30.

I didn’t need anyone until 4:30 and had fully planned on cutting all 3 women by 4. I put my foot down and told Katie to **** if she was going to have that attitude.

Katie is now not speaking to me and definitely holds a grudge in that I pulled my manager card on her by cutting shifts as I saw fit.

AITA?

Apartment requires $100k pet coverage even though I don’t have pets — insurance says it doesn’t exist. What should I do?

“I’m trying to get renters insurance approved for my apartment, but I’m stuck in a really confusing situation.

The apartment (via HOA Verify / Stern Risk Partners) is requiring:$100,000 coverage for pet-caused damage inside the unit.

However:

I do NOT have any pets.

Hmmm…

My renters insurance (Lemonade) includes $100,000 personal liability coverage.

I confirmed with my insurance provider that they do not offer a separate $100,000 “pet damage endorsement” The only pet-related add-on they offer is up to $500 coverage.

Scion group rejected my policy and said it cannot be approved without that specific $100,000 pet-caused damage endorsement.

When I contacted them again, they just said: “Without that endorsement, we cannot approve your policy. We do not recommend any insurance”

What is going on here…?

Now I’m being told I may have to pay a waiver fee from the apartment instead.

I’m confused because:

I don’t even have pets

My liability coverage is already $100,000

My insurance company says this endorsement doesn’t exist in their product

This doesn’t seem normal.

Has anyone dealt with this before? Is this normal for US apartments, or should I push back / escalate with the leasing office?

Having a bad day at work is one thing, but being singled out can make everything feel a lot worse.

One employee dealt with that after going into work despite getting devastating news about her family.

It all began when she started crocheting to calm herself down during a slow period, which was something management had already allowed.

But this time, her manager began criticizing her over the radio until she had a panic attack.

Later, she learned he was also complaining about her to other employees.

Last year, I finally sought out therapy, and I discovered I have a few mental illnesses.

It’s been confirmed that I have two anxiety disorders and depression. It was recommended to me by my therapist that I let my managers know about my disorders, just so if I happen to have a panic attack at work or start to feel bad, I can get help.

It was also recommended that I find an activity to help me curb panic attacks, and I found crochet is one of the few things that helps.

The manager was upset that she started crocheting.

A few days ago, I had something very devastating happen within my family right before I had to clock in for my shift. I was going to call in, but I decided to calm myself down and go in anyway.

For a good 15–20 minutes, not a single customer had walked in, and all the lanes were being used, so I decided to start crocheting. Keep in mind, two of the coworkers who were working with me in the same area were sitting on stools (which we technically aren’t allowed to do) and on their phones.

I had just barely started crocheting when my manager started calling my name over the radio and repeatedly demanded that I do something productive.

At this point, she started hyperventilating.

Normally, I would have just done what he asked, but he was berating me publicly, and I was already stressed enough as it was because of what had happened earlier with my family.

The girl who I was working with was trying to calm me down since I was now hyperventilating and had even said over the radio that I just needed a small break.

My manager was still complaining about me over the radio, and I couldn’t take it anymore, so I left and hid in the bathroom for a minute while I tried to calm myself down as much as possible.

He tried to explain himself, but she’s still wants to turn him in.

I wasn’t really planning on complaining or filing a report against my manager, but I found out he had gone to a separate coworker who watched exactly what happened and was complaining about me to them, saying I was over-exaggerating and he was the real victim in the situation.

He even complained to the manager who would be in charge of my section later in the day, and I had to deal with comments from him as well. This was literally the third shift I have had with him in which he publicly berated me in front of both customers and all my coworkers.

He has explained that he has been particularly stressed as well, and I can see how it might seem like I am over-exaggerating on my end, so I feel bad going as far as reporting him.

Winning big money can sometimes create unexpected family tension.

The following story is about a young man who won £4M in the lottery.

He planned to give his parents a portion of the money, but they assumed they were entitled to half of the winnings.

I won approximately £4M earlier this year from the Lotto.

Currently, the money is diversified into several index funds.

I was planning on giving them £750,000 as a thank you.

When I mentioned that as a counteroffer, they got mad. They started calling me selfish.

This young man’s parents talked about their plans as if they were the ones who won the money.

I’m 19M, and my parents are 49M and 47F.

Without going into too much detail and making this longer than necessary, I only waited around a week. Then, I told my parents.

They were excited, and so was I. It was all going fine.

Then they started talking about the money as if it was theirs. They were talking about retiring and going on holiday. They mentioned buying a boat and a new car and about travelling the world.

They wanted half of the winnings.

I asked them how much they expected to have.

With a stone cold face, they said half.

I understand that with giving half, having £2M left is already enough. But why should they be entitled to that?

I know they are my parents.  We have had a great relationship.

He thinks giving them half is too much and quite unfair.

To me, £750,000 seems like it is enough.

They already have their own savings.

They also have a paid off mortgage.

So, am I the jerk for refusing to give my parents half of my winnings?

To be honest, that’s a huge expectation to place on someone else’s winnings.

It is OP’s money, and it’s not like he’s being selfish or anything. He already offered a generous amount to his parents.

They should be more than thankful that he’s planning on giving them a portion of his winnings.

Taking care of your yard is important, but as you get older, it can become increasingly difficult.

What would you do if you had a nice old lady as a neighbor, but she just couldn’t care for her lawn anymore? And, to make it worse, you had another neighbor who kept filing complaints against her to try to get her evicted because of it?

That is the situation that the guy in this story was in, so he started taking care of her lawn, but in the most annoying ways allowed by the letter of the law. He flooded her flower beds with dandelions, mowed the lawn with an extremely loud mower, and did other annoying things.

The neighbors hated it, but the old lady was very appreciative.

While this was better than doing nothing, I think he should have just done things right. It wouldn’t be any more work, but it would have avoided conflict in the neighborhood. Read the full story below and see if you agree.

My older neighbor, who we’ll call May, was too old to mow.

Getting older comes with many challenges.

She had a riding mower, but she wasn’t strong enough to turn the steering wheel. Her son was “Done with her” and had completely stopped mowing her grass.

He stopped because he wanted a pay of almost 400$ a week to cut the grass and occasionally weed the flower bed. She refused.

What a horrible situation.

So here she was, a 73 year old woman unable to cut the grass with our old jerk neighbors looming over her shoulder. (Context: They reported anything. Uncut grass, ratty plants, even not filling the flower beds would get a report to the people who privately ran the neighborhood.)

She called out for help with flyers, but that idea quickly fell apart when someone robbed her garden shed while doing the work. So she was screwed. The threat of eviction loomed over her head.

Wait, why would he put dandelions in her flower bed?

I witnessed the whole thing. I never really talked to her, so I helped her. She had a list of things to be done.

Filling the flower bed? I filled it with dandelions, which quickly took over the whole neighborhood. Every lawn was a sea of yellow.

Oh, I see. He is helping her ‘comply’ with the rules while still making other people angry.

Hiding the garbage cans? Put up a fence with about 6 inches between each board. Technically the cans were behind a fence, but still plainly visible.

Mowing the grass? This was the best part. I took the muffler off her lawnmower and ran that thing well past 6 or 7 in the afternoon.

I suppose he got the job done.

I did this for 3 years, every summer before she eventually passed. It was so out of the blue, when I went to her house and she was gone, and the house was empty.

She left me what she had left, 200$ for everything. The neighbors ended up moving out because of me.

While what he did was better than nothing, I really don’t see why he would intentionally annoy the rest of the neighbors. He could have mowed properly and put in simple flowers that don’t take extra work and accomplished the same thing. As the saying goes, two wrongs don’t make a right.

He technically did the right thing, but in the wrong way. This is certainly better than not helping at all, but ideally, he should have just helped properly to avoid antagonizing the neighbors.
