“I saw an ad that a 35F woman is looking for a roommate in luxury apartment for $1250.

Booyah!

I visited and it looked AMAZING.

The 2 bedroom/bathroom is HUGE.

The building also has so many amenities and was the largest apartment I have ever seen (I got lost)!

She told me she got it for a good deal because it’s considered “old” in their standards.

Then there is a tiny 360 square ft studio apartment for $1550 in an old building (1950’s) with the very bare minimum amenities. There is also not an in-unit washer/dryer like the luxury one.

Doesn’t sound crazy to me…

I would have to go to another floor to do it. I feel crazy spending $300 more for such a downgrade so I can live by myself. I have such mixed luck with roommates that I don’t know if I want to risk it.

I am leaving my current situation because the housemate who owns the house smokes in her room and I can’t stand the weed smell. And yes I asked her if she can smoke somewhere else.

You gotta do what’s best for you!

It’s just if I choose the luxury apartment, I will be stuck with her for a year if she turns out crazy or something.

The ad posting is still there so I can still take it. I am wondering if I should risk it and spend $300 less for luxury?”

Growing up is hard, and for many people, being able to transition from being a child to being an adult is difficult.

What would you do if you were living with a dysfunctional family that was borderline abusive, so you wanted to move out on your own, but you knew that it would make them angry?

That is the situation that the young woman in this story is in, and she doesn’t want the conflict or to let them down, so she doesn’t know what to do.

I (28f) recently had enough of my current living situation.

An income-based rent could be very helpful.

Years ago I was planning on ways to move out and sign up to a local apartment complex that does adjusted rent depending on your monthly/yearly income.

That was when it was around 2021, but during that time late Sept-Oct my step father was diagnosed with liver failure.

It is incredible that he has survived this long.

He tried to stop drinking and the sharp quit kind of shocked his liver (what I was best told by my mother). When doctors told her that he had a few months, I said I’d stay and help. I really thought he was going to die.

But here we are in the year 2026, he’s still alive. Mom took him to other doctors outside our local area and there he got more treatments and now seems to be recovering.

This guy seems like he has a lot of drama in his life.

I thought this was great, I could then shift my focus to then finding a space of my own considering my step-brother also moved out recent with their partner last year *after Christmas*… And this is where I realize, I should’ve left sooner.

Not even a year, *before Christmas*, my step-brother moved back in. Domestic Violence charge, the chick he was with kept the apartment, and already had a new boyfriend before he was booted out.

It seems like moving out of this area would be a good thing.

Everything he had moving out, is in that apartment with his ex. He’s back on the couch where he’s lived on it for longer than I could remember the first time he moved in with us.

With my step-dad’s health, I thought maybe I should’ve stuck around. Do my stuff, go to work, come back and rest, and then see what was to be done. But my brother before made existing in the same space really uncomfortable, and now that he’s back.

Falling back into bad habits is a serious problem.

My step-dad has turned into a jerk again. You see, both of them act more like work buddies having one too many beers than actual father and son. And when step-brother interacts with step-dad, step-dad proceeds to act like his child is the funniest, most rightest person on the planet.

The longer he’s been home, my step-dad has slowly been sneaking back into his mean habits. He’s even turned to those 0% beers, and while the drink is “safe”, he’s still getting the effects.

Things are starting to get abusive.

He’s meaner, ruder, laughs more when he says the crudest things to my mom. And to me- I apparently keep turning more and more into the screw up of the family.

I finally had enough when nearly two months ago, he screamed at me to stop messing around cause I was too old to be a lazy kid. I disappeared for a bit, came back to him acting like he didn’t emotionally lampoon me and my mom was none the wiser.

She got yelled at for washing his own dishes?

Then it happened again. A couple weeks back, we were having dinner, I finished first so I washed my plate and figured I’d do the rest of the dishes once everyone else ate and put them by/in the sink.

But instead, I got yelled at to come to the kitchen for my step-father to then try screaming at me again cause my plate was clean while everything else was dirty.

What a jerk.

That “it wasn’t my job to only clean up after myself”. I couldn’t get a word in, he only stopped when he realized my mom and his son could hear so he stepped out with those stupid non-alcoholic beers AND I DID THE DISHES.

I got dressed, I left again, walked to my local park and nearly cried in public at 9 pm. I walked back thinking ‘what was I doing this whole time staying here?’.

These apologies are becoming meaningless.

The next day he “apologized”, then tried to walk away when I wanted explaining my side of the issue. That was my moment to lock in.

I got in contact with my ex-SIL. Lore- My blood brother married her, had a kid, then he went off to be with some crazy chick. Me and my birth dad kept my SIL and niece over him.

What a great opportunity.

She got into a nice house recently in the town where I work, and she mentioned a space I could move into. When my step-dad screamed at me for the second time, I jumped on the opportunity.

Now I have to figure out how to pack everything, shuffle my storage unit to another, finally understand a bunch of paperwork to get on a lease and get my stuff in order.

There is really no reason for her to take over this house. She can’t even afford it if she wanted to.

The reason I’m asking if I’d be wrong for moving out now is my parents (mom and step-dad). They’re planning on moving out of the house to out of state in about a year, my mom wants me to take over the house and handle the finances.

I earn roughly a thousand a month. She says I need to earn three thousand to handle it all. I do not want to take over the home, I never wanted to take over the house, I do not want to live in a neighborhood where the closest town (where I work) is a whole hour away.

It is well past time for her to get out on his own.

I cannot live another year in this place, this is not what I planned when I first thought of living on my own.

I fear that if I tell her that I have a opportunity to leave, she’d guilt me into staying and getting stuck with a house I do not want to live in anymore with a income I have to miraculously increase thrice to afford.

WIBTA?

He has no desire to live there, and it is clearly not good for his health, so I think he should move out as soon as he can. Telling his parents that he won’t be ‘taking over’ the house is a good thing to do, though, as it will help them with their planning.

She needs to start putting herself first and establishing herself as an adult.

She stayed way longer than she should have.

It is time to start thinking and acting like an adult.

She has every reason to move out and no reason to stay. Sure, it might be awkward and difficult, but she really needs to tell her mom that she is moving out and won’t be taking over the family home.

It is important that she tell her in a way that does not allow for debate, though. It isn’t a conversation; it is just a notification.

Wouldn’t it be nice to live in a world where hiring managers were completely upfront with you when you got a job, you knew what was expected of you, and they’d be crystal clear about the hours, pay, etc.?

Sure, it sounds great…but for a lot of folks, it ain’t happening!

We constantly see stories about people getting jerked around at their jobs and we’re here to say NO MORE.

Will our outcry change anything?

Probably not, but it feels good to let loose every once in a while.

I loathe salary jobs and the expectations that come with it.

“I picked up a new job in the auto industry a few months ago. The starting position is hourly and you work your way into the salary/bonus.

Well, I ended up going straight to the salary part, without the bonus. But hey, if I’m only working 40, thats whatever right? Take my lunches, it’s 8 am-5 pm. And it was fine, for a while. I finished my courses.

So now I’m eligible for the bonuses right? I’m actually doing 100% of the expected work.

It sounds like they’re getting jerked around…

No, another month of coaching to make sure I can do the job.

I should be eligible, but my boss is sketchy as hell. But its only 4 weeks. Don’t make waves, push through and get settled. Make money, go home.

Except now I’m not working 8-5. You literally can’t do this job in that time. You’re pulled away every 10-15 minutes the entire day, and thats if you’re lucky.

This place sounds like a real horror show.

I was getting to work at 7:30 to get a little quiet time and organize my stuff for the pointless 1 on 1 with the boss we all have to do every day.

Next thing I know, I’m there til 6 pm because once 5 hits, well now it’s quiet​ and I can actually get stuff done.

And then in the span of a week, I’m passive aggressively told told that my voluntary 7:30 isn’t enough, we need to be there at 7:15 for that meeting.

And  now I have a note on my desk that the meetings are 7 am.

He’s really fed up.

I was willing to suck it up and suffer if the pay is good enough.

I expect a salary job to have some days and weeks where you’re doing extra work without compensation.

But I feel like I’m in scorched earth territory. And thats partly my fault, I let him push it.”

You never know what’s going on in someone’s life, so it’s rude to assume you do. You’ll probably be wrong.

In this story, a drunk man comes into a restaurant and is immediately rude to the waitress, making assumptions about her life that are far from true. Then his family joins him, and the waitress learns why they’re at the restaurant.

Through it all, the man is rude, and his behavior gets worse until his teenage daughter, who looks like she doesn’t want to be there, finally can’t take it anymore and tells him off.

The waitress is very grateful for the teen, but she also feels bad for her.

Teenage girl defends me in front of her awful dad.

This happened the other night. We were unexpectedly very busy, and I was having an incredibly rough day. Everything went wrong, and at one point was yelled at by a grown man for something that was out of my control.

So I was having a bad day, but I was putting my server face on regardless.

I’m told I have a guy at table 9. I go up to greet him, his breath reeks of alcohol. I say “Hey there! How are you today? My name is Pira…”

He cuts me off.

He already had a bad attitude.

Him: “dO yOu reaLly wAnNa knOoow? *Do you reaaaally want to know how my freaking day is going?”. Clearly, he’s drunk.

Me: “Uh, I guess not! That’s okay. What can I get you to drink?”.

Him: “See that’s what I thought. You don’t care. So how was your day miss, huh?”.

Me: “Well it’s been pretty good, can’t complain too much. What can I get you to drink?”

His comments are even more rude.

Him: “OH OK. So your life is good? Everything is just great? Husband’s happy, kids are happy, you’re making great money?”.

Hm, kind of judgmental. I’m not married nor do I have kids, but I’m trying to not get derailed or put behind more than I already am, so I tell him yep kids are good, everything’s fine.

Him: “OK haha, well before you rudely asked how my day was and then admitted you didn’t really want to know, I was going to tell you I want a Budweiser.

I say ok, I leave and meanwhile tell my manager this guy is drunk, not sure I should be serving him.

But she didn’t get out of serving him that easily.

She says he’s a regular and acts like this always (slurring and being a jerk) whether he’s drunk or not. He doesn’t stay long, just serve him.

I bring him his Bud.

“Oh Bud Light must’ve reeeeally changed up their labels, I’ve never seen one that looks like this”.

Long story short, he’s adamant he ordered a Bud Light, not a Budweiser. Whatever. I take it back and bring him a new one.

The whole family shows up.

Now his daughter, ex wife and (new husband?) walk in. They sit down and are very lovely people. The two other adults order a beer, daughter looks very unhappy and it looks like she was forced to come. She says very little the entire time.

Now before their food comes up, an incident happens where I become distracted. I’m walking out of the kitchen to pick up the refill on beers for my table (albeit about 5 minutes late), and I run into drunk guy holding 3 different beers

Him: “WELL SINCE YOU COULDN’T MANAGE TO DO YOUR JOB AND GET OUR BEERS, I DID YOUR JOB FOR YOU. THANKS A LOT.”

I tell him I’m very sorry, truly.

At least his family seems a lot better.

His daughter yells at him to shut up and his ex wife is assuring me it’s totally okay, it really wasn’t an issue.

I now have an extra three beers since he went to the bartender before I could run them, so since I have to pay for them anyways and because I was a bit at fault for running behind, I being them over to the table and say “This round is on me guys, I’m sorry about the wait”.

Drunk guy laughs. “WhAt arE thEse hahahaha, we didn’t order these!”

Ex wife repeats what I said, since he clearly just ignored me.

Then there were the comments about the food.

He goes on mocking me, laughing and finally says “well okay then!”.

The kitchen is backed up so I just start bringing the food as it comes, explaining everything is coming out at different times and I don’t want anyone’s food getting cold.

Everyone understands, but everytime I set something down he makes a nasty comment about what I forgot.

His daughter has finally had enough and her embarrassment turned into anger.

I feel so bad for the daughter, but good for her for standing up to her dad.

Daughter: “DAD, seriously shut the heck up. She just explained the sides are all coming in a minute. It’s clearly busy, and I’m sure she doesn’t even want to deal with our table anymore because you’re such a jerk.”

He points to the beers as if to make a point about my bad service.

I start walking away but hear her while I’m doing so

Daughter: “So she forgot your beer, stuff happens. You don’t know what kind of day she’s having, and it’s just mean at this point. She even bought you a round, she didn’t have to. What is wrong with you?”.

The dad’s behavior finally changed.

I don’t hear the conversation beyond that, but when I bring the sides over the table is completely silent.

The others continue to be pleasant while he’s sitting there just sulking and looking drunk and stupid.

The other guy at the table (I understood him to be a step dad) comes over to me and explains it’s the daughter’s birthday and asks if I can bring a dessert, but not say anything about it.

After all of this I make an awesome brownie sundae, which I comped for her.

Here’s how the situation finally ended.

Dad makes some stupid comment about hOw dId i kNoW?

I’m not interested in making banter with you, freaking jerk. But I leave on good terms with the rest of the table, and step dad (who paid) leaves me a big tip and is very thankful for the free round of beers & dessert.

Long story, I know. But I just want to say thank you to this girl. I was at my wit’s end, and her sticking up for me really helped me to move on with my day. I could see how uncomfortable she was the whole time and I really feel for her.

It was the daughter’s birthday? She clearly didn’t want to be there. Why did they force her to go? I’d like to think they would’ve let her celebrate her birthday somewhere else. Hopefully she has another celebration with her friends, something she’ll actually enjoy.

I especially feel bad for the teenage girl because this was her birthday. She was obviously unhappy, and when you see her dad’s behavior, it’s easy to see why she probably didn’t want to come to the restaurant. I’m sure she would’ve preferred to be anywhere else on her birthday.

I hope she at least got to do something fun on her birthday. If this was the highlight, it’s pretty sad.

Giving away something that belongs to someone else, even if it seems unused, is one of those situations where citing “good intentions” isn’t a good excuse.

A teenager who wanted to help a friend who had just gotten a new cat packed up some supplies and set out an old scratching post from the house without getting full clearance from his mom first.

To his credit, he did try to call first, but when his mom didn’t answer, he decided to proceed anyway.

The drama started when his mom caught him setting out the supplies on the Ring camera — and she made her distaste quite clear.

He thinks his mom totally overreacted, but Redditors in the comment section weren’t so sure.

AITA for trying to give my mom’s old cat toy to my friend when she just got a new one?

My friend, I’ll call him Finn (18M), just got a new cat and needed supplies because it was very last minute and his mom wasn’t really on board with it at the time.

He asked for a litter box, cat food, and litter.

So he was more than happy to help Finn out.

I was willing to give all of that to them, and I did — I packed everything in a bag and waited for him to pick it up.

I thought they could use some toys too, so I called my mom to see if I could give some to them.

But when he didn’t hear back, he decided to improvise.

She didn’t pick up, so I just grabbed the old cat scratching post we had and put it outside for them to pick up.

I had to go to work that day and they didn’t know if they would be there in time to get it.

When his mom found out, she wasn’t happy at all.

When I was putting it outside, my mother saw me on the Ring camera and started screaming at me, asking what everything was doing outside and why that stuff was out there.

He tried to plead his case, but it only made his mother more upset.

I tried explaining that my friend just got a new cat and they were going to come pick up some stuff I had packed for them.

She immediately got mad and said I shouldn’t be touching her stuff.

He can’t understand why this is making her so upset.

I got a little mad because we just got a new scratching post that is exactly the same as the old one, so I didn’t know why she needed or still wanted the old one — it probably would’ve been thrown away anyway.

I put it back inside because I was tired of going back and forth, told my friend what happened, and now they don’t want to pick up the other stuff and had another friend get their supplies instead.

He knows his mom had no use for it, so it makes him even madder that she’s being so dramatic about it.

I’m really upset with my mom because there’s no way she was still going to use that scratching post, or that our cats were still going to use it.

I just think it’s really stupid that she was so mad and didn’t have any decency in her heart to sacrifice something for someone who couldn’t get it themselves.

I’m really upset, but AITA?

This young man’s intentions were good, although the execution was a little shaky.

This commenter finds him in the wrong for two reasons.

He really should have asked for permission first.

“Entitled” is the word this reader chose.

Some people like to hold onto things even when they aren’t in peak condition.

His mom’s reaction was a lot, but she still had a point.

Deciding that something in a shared household is basically unused and therefore fair to give away isn’t his call to make, and Redditors were pretty quick to point that out.

Sure, the scratching post was probably never going to see another cat again. But “probably” isn’t permission.

His intentions were genuinely kind. His friend needed help, and he wanted to provide it.

But sometimes good intentions aren’t enough.

There are good neighbor. There are bad neighbors. And then there are really bad neighbors. I’m talking so bad that you can’t live near them in peace and there’s always drama.

This story is about the really bad kind of neighbors. The police have been called multiple times. One neighbor is upset about noise, and the other paranoid neighbor blames the first neighbor for anything and everything that could go wrong.

It sounds like a nightmare living situation, but neither neighbor wants to move.

Now, they’re headed to mediation with the landlord, and the upstairs neighbor is worried about the meeting.

Let’s read the whole story.

I convinced our landlord for a mediation meeting between my neighbors and I.

There has been an ongoing issue between my neighbors and I since they moved in July 2021.

They were issued an official noise complaint in October, for being loud after quiet hours. They got somewhat quiet for about a month, then started back up again in November.

Since then, I’ve repeatedly asked for my landlord to step in, for some help. In fact, the day of my neighbor calling the cops on 11/30/2021, they specifically blamed me for their car damages.

I felt like the entire time the cops were asking questions, on whether or not I had seen anything, they were saying my neighbor blamed me. “We know you and your neighbor have been having issues.”

This would be so frustrating!

I immediately called my landlord and told her what happened.

She said “I think legally the cops have to tell you if you’re a suspect or not.”

My landlord is dumb. They don’t.

I later got a copy of the police report and I was in fact named as the prime suspect by my neighbor. On car damages that happened in our shared parking lot.

This lady doesn’t even know what I drive. Has black scuff marks on her white car and my car is blue. Insert eye roll

This is weird.

My landlord didn’t speak to my neighbors after the cops came. Dismissed the whole event. So now there is more tension between us neighbors.

Then comes a day when I heard a knocking. I was in the other end of the apartment so I walked over to the front door and no one was there. I then went to my balcony for some fresh air. My balcony faces the parking lot.

The knocking continues and then I see someone leave my stairwell and get into their car. Some blonde lady. IDK who. The odd thing was, this person looked up at me. I’m on the 3rd floor. No one ever looks up in my direction.

Then I see her texting from inside her car and drive off.

But it got weirder.

I didn’t think anything of it. Then I go back inside shortly after, because it’s cold.

This is when I hear my neighbor rustling in her apartment (directly below me). She’s a loud talker and recounts all the steps I just took.

At first I thought her saying “she this” and “she that” was complaining about the lady who just left. Then she said (I don’t know exact quotes. I’m filling in blanks b/c sometimes I can hear only every other word.) “I never hear that B* upstairs move around” (me). But whenever something happens in my apartment, she has to butt her ugly face in it. There was someone knocking on my door, and then I hear her walking to her door. Then my friend (I’m guessing the lady) left and said that B* upstairs was peering over her, watching her. At first I thought it was that B* knocking on my door so I avoided the door. If that B* ever knocks on my door, I’m shanking her A**. If I see her outside in the parking lot, I’m stabbing her.”

Normally I don’t care what she has to say. My ears only really perked up when she was stating a replay of what I had just done minutes ago.

The neighbor sounds paranoid.

I was scared so it led to us calling the cops on each other. That was on 12/7/2021

After this event, I had had enough.

The cops that came the evening of 12/7/2021 said my neighbor was saying she thought I was stalking her. LOL! In the police report from 11/30/2021 she specifically mentions that she’s seen me poking around other tenant’s cars and peaking into other tenant’s patios.

Absolutely not true. She is very paranoid against me. If anything, this feels as if she is watching me as I’m outside, when I sometimes walk my neighborhood. That’s creepy!

The police made a suggestion.

When the police came by that night of 12/7/2021, he asked me “have you talked to your landlord about these concerns?”

I had. On our meeting on that previous Monday, my landlord said to my face that she would do nothing about it. So it escalated.

The cop said “there is someone who is above your landlord and you need to get in contact with them.”

I agreed and I did. I sent corporate all my concerns with my neighbor and how my landlord did little to nothing leading up to this most recent event.

They need to talk this out.

After requesting for it, my landlord agreed to a mediation meeting. It will be my landlord, my female neighbor who has all the issues with me, my landlord’s boss, and myself. (It may also include my neighbor’s boyfriend. Which is actually the root of all my previous noise complaints.)

I’ll admit, I can hear my neighbor whenever she’s on the phone. She puts herself on speaker phone. I don’t need to actively listen, she’s just loud.

Soon after my landlord’s boss called me to hear all my concerns, I’m guessing they called my neighbor. I say this because of the things that were said.

Here are some examples of things that were said.

I have told my landlord about how they run their dishwasher at Midnight, their washing machine at 2am, loud screaming at all hours of the night, etc.

When my landlord’s boss called my neighbor, I guess they discussed this.

I heard my neighbor point blank say she talks to their downstairs neighbors (the first floor. my neighbor is 2nd floor, and I’m on the 3rd.) That she has talked to the first floor neighbors about running their washing machine late at night and it doesn’t bother them. That if another neighbor were to do the same thing “she doesn’t care.”

She kept saying that over and over again when my landlord’s boss was talking to her too, “I don’t care.”

She’s worried about mediation.

This really deters me in thinking this mediation will go smoothly. Or that they’ll even walk into that meeting with an open mind.

I’m thinking of bringing in a copy of the police report to discuss why she is so paranoid against me.

Honestly, I just enjoy the peace and quiet when I’m home alone. As soon as my neighbors come home, they blast their music, then she makes phone calls on speaker phone.

I’ve started to play bag pipe music to drown them out. LOL!

This living situation is the opposite of peaceful.

Oh, after the 12/7/2021 event, my neighbor has now come home and immediately blasts her music and TV to play it so loudly I can hear it word for word.

Since my quiet hours are from 10pm to 8am, one day I vacuumed at 9am. This included me moving furniture etc.

When the office manager called her to set up an appointment for mediation, she complained saying I was “banging all day long.” (It was only in the morning.) That it was making her 3 year old son scared. That she has an emotional support dog and it was frightening her dog.

She forgot to mention anything about vacuuming, only that I had been banging. She loves to play the victim and repeatedly hides behind her child for sympathy.

The drama continues.

Immediately after she got off the phone, she blasted her TV. Banged all the kitchen cabinets (I’m assuming to put dishes away) etc.

I don’t ever complain about daytime noises. I only mention if it’s after 10pm, or in the middle of the night.

Even after the cops left on 11/30/2021, she called a friend on speaker phone and complained about me. Apparently there was no evidence supporting her claim that I vandalized/damaged her car. Instead, she complained to whomever saying how “It’s b/c she doesn’t have kids. People like that are crazy. They act like that b/c they don’t have kids.” (The police report says she’s 22. Their son is 3. They must have been straight out of High School when they got pregnant.)

It would be hard not to be offended.

I’m really offended by this assumption.

I’ve seen/heard of people with and without kids being criminals. Not having a child doesn’t automatically make you a criminal.

Plus, she has no proof. She has her own delusions.

When the 12/7/2021 event happened, she claimed she was scared for her son’s safety and how she’s pregnant right now. I have never gone any where near this woman. I have never interacted with her child. I didn’t even know she was pregnant. I’m just utterly shocked at her paranoia.

She’s worried about the meeting.

So…..in conclusion, what do I say/ not say in this meeting? I don’t think I can mention anything I’ve overheard her saying about me. She already feels like I’m eavesdropping on her. She told the police I’m stalking her.

The police told both her and I on how to file a harassment/ stalker report (basically a restraining order). If I mention anything about what I’ve overhead, especially in a meeting with other people there, she will have enough ammunition to get that report approved by a judge. That’s a concern.

She’s already told my rental manager “I don’t care” when talking about running major appliances late at night.

My manager called me back to confirm a date/time and simply said “I’m asking both of you to not make any loud noises over the weekend.” Also, we are both being offered an out on our leases, with no penalties.

The meeting may not be effective.

I don’t think they’re going to move. I’ve been here for 2 years and don’t plan on moving either. I want to relocate to a renovated unit later on in the year (when we can afford a new deposit).

This meeting may not resolve anything either. I’m also going to be the only one in the meeting. My partner will not be available to attend.

Herself and her boyfriend might be there, and he is the one I have issues with- not her.

As far as my rental manager has said, “If anyone gets disrespectful, the meeting is over.” Good policy.

Any advice?

The neighbor is paranoid, and OP is sick of the noise. The best solution would be for someone to move, but since that’s not going to happen, how should OP approach this meeting?

I don’t think these two neighbors are ever going to be on good terms, so one of them really needs to leave. I feel bad for whoever moves into OP’s apartment though.

I would find it very frustrating to work at a retail job where you never know how many hours you’re actually going to be working. If you count on a certain amount of money each week in your paycheck, what do you do if your manager suddenly decides to schedule you for fewer shifts than usual?

Background: So I work at a large pizza chain as a delivery driver, and our franchise manager is known to be a bit tight when it comes to saving money.

As the Easter Break is this weekend, every day is a designated public holiday and employees receive double pay across the entire weekend.

The store manager had originally had me rostered on for the Saturday and Sunday nights during evening rush, along with 2 other drivers as it was expected to be extremely busy due to the Easter Break and a large sports event nearby.

They’re going to be short staffed!

To save money on costs, as I was the most expensive driver to employ based on my age and experience, the FM has cut my shift entirely, leaving me with just two shifts for the week, barely enough to cover my expenses.

After discussing it with my SM and there being no way he can get me back on the roster unless someone calls in sick, I figured it would be a good idea to take some annual leave I’ve had saved up over the last year on that day, which the SM agreed as it will end up costing the FM more to not employ me and have customers angry at long delivery times than if he had not cut my shift.

I like this guy’s attitude! Instead of being angry about the minimal hours, he’s getting satisfaction in making life harder for the annoying manager.

The customers aren’t going to be happy, but maybe the manager will appreciate OP’s hard work.

I think he should look for another job. If the boss is cutting his shifts to save money, he can’t count on the number of shifts he wants and needs. Instead of being upset about it or getting revenge, he could try to find another pizza place that will actually give him the hours he’s looking for.

Helping a friend out by babysitting their child is a very generous thing to do, but sometimes it can get taken advantage of.

What would you do if your friend asked you to babysit so she could get her nails done, but after you agreed, you found out that her partner (the baby’s father) wasn’t working, but was instead just going out for fun?

So, I have a friend who I absolutely love. We are in our late 20s & both Female.

Helping friends with child care is very generous.

Every so often, my best friend asks me to babysit her kids (either I offer or I want to pitch in because she’s done so much for me).

During this World Cup season, my friend had texted/called me about possibly needing childcare (after work hours) and we had created a contingent plan.

She is happy to help, but it seems there is some hesitation.

The reason being, my best friend wanted to get her nails done and her partner might be working at the time. I am all for babysitting for my overstimulated best friend and don’t mind moving my schedule around for her to have some time to herself.

However, I have always been a bit bothered about the way babysitting works with her, but I love her so much that I put up with it.

I can see how this would be inconvenient.

FIRST of all, I always have to wait last minute to find out if her partner is working or not (if he’s not, he typically makes personal plans cus he knows I’m coming)

SECOND,

I get told they’ll be home by a certain time but she/they always make excuses about why they’re gonna be late or text that they’re gonna go to another place and come home later than stated.

Her friend needs to be more considerate of her time.

It has always annoyed me, but I was very light about my complaints.

It’s not that I don’t say anything. It’s that my best friend is very big on family or having each other’s backs or just very sensitive about people she considers close to her.

Today, I finally put my foot down.

Ok, everything is going forward as planned.

My bsf was having car troubles in the morning. So, I checked up on her around noon. Since she had that car issue, I was thinking maybe there was a hinder on the plans for the day.

After check-in with her, she said she was still attending the nail appt and that she needed to leave home by 5:30pm. I didn’t see much of an issue with that since I had a slow office day.

She has her plans in place.

So, I made plans to pick up my dog at home, drive to her place (~20min), and babysit the kids while watching the Mexico vs South Korea game.

I know how their game works though or how they be doing the tango sometimes (whether intentional or not)… so, I texted my friend when her man was leaving for work or he had left already.

If he isn’t working, he should watch his kid.

I knew traffic was getting bad in the Bay Area, so I was counting my minutes. She didn’t reply, so I called.

I asked what I needed to ask and she answered that her man’s job for the day got cancelled (He works road construction) and that he was planning to go to the bar nearby to the watch the Mexico game (He’s Mexican).

Her friend has some nerve getting upset about this.

I got upset and told her that I wasn’t trying to be rude but that I wasn’t going to Babysit when I didn’t need to. That I wasn’t a replacement dad or that I also wanted to see the game. That I had agreed to babysitting because he could be working and she’s an overstimulated mom who needs a few hours to herself.

My friend got short with me.

Obviously upset.

Why is her friend mad about this?

Apparently, she sent me a text not to come, but I didn’t see it so I called her to ask if her man had made plans to meet with anyone or if he could just stay home.

She was short saying that I didn’t need to come and that he was going to stay home. I was trying to compromise that if he made plans then he could go because they’re also misusing those people’s times, but she already sounded hurt and didn’t want to listen.

Maybe the way she said it was harsh, but it needed to be said.

The night ended up with her making me feel bad because I told her “he can watch the game at home. I have two jobs. If he’s not working, I don’t see the need for me to drive back and forth”.

Previous, I had told her “I am not babysitting so he can go to a bar. I am here for you. Not for him. No offense but I am not a replacement dad.”

She has nothing to feel bad about.

Now I feel I like a jerk for letting my friend down.

(I don’t care about her man. Take care of your kids. Watch the game at home. Include them in your heritage)

I just feel like a jerk because I know how sensitive my BSF is about this kind of “Family” / “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child” type stuff.

No way, she is exactly right. The dad should be watching the kids if he is available. She isn’t friends with him or doing him favors, and her friend needs to understand that.

There are a lot of issues that come from babysitting for this couple.

Schools often put in policies with the best of intentions, but then the students respond in unexpected ways.

That is what happened in this story when a school said that anyone who lost their student ID would have to serve five special detentions, which were detentions normally reserved for the most severe forms of misbehavior.

So, when a student lost or misplaced their ID, they would simply skip classes since that came with a less severe punishment. The school took less than a year to realize that this was a dumb policy.

At least they finally changed it. I find it funny how often places make new policies without thinking them through. Read through the full story to see for yourself.

Lose your school ID and get 5 special detentions…

This was ten years ago, during my freshman year of high school.

This policy makes sense to help ensure nobody who doesn’t belong there gets in.

Midway through the year, our school tightened up a policy on IDs.

You now needed an ID to enter and exit the school building during the day – we were allowed out during lunch or free periods.

Wow, this seems pretty extreme.

Before, if you needed a new ID, you just bought one for $25 and that was the end of it.

Now, they changed the policy so that you would get 5 special detentions if you lose an ID anytime after the start of the day.

I bet the students hated these.

Special detentions, unlike regular detentions, had to be served immediately and consecutively.

You could serve regular detentions whenever you wanted as long as you had none by the end of the school year.

Why was losing an ID listed with these special detentions?

So, special detentions were much worse, especially for the kids that had time-dependent responsibilities like looking after their siblings after school.

Getting special detentions was a non-option for most people.

I wonder if lost IDs were a huge problem here.

You could also get a special detention for stuff that wasn’t stupid, like bullying or theft, but losing an ID/getting it stolen was almost never the offender’s fault, and they still had to deal with it.

You also got one detention for each class missed, but that was pretty much the only way to get a regular detention. It was strictly enforced, no more no less.

This honestly made sense for the students.

Now, most of the students immediately realized that if they lost their ID while they were outside (lunch started at 4th period, and there were 9 periods) there’s no reason to go back to school because they’ll get in more trouble.

I lost my ID once and just left school and headed home, but another day my friend had his wallet stolen while he was outside and he had nothing to do, so he just spent the day in the courtyard.

Even the teachers understood what the students did.

Made sure to knock on and wave in the window of a class he was forced to miss and emailed the teacher from his phone to tell her what happened.

The teacher was completely understanding and didn’t punish him further for that.

They finally realized what a stupid policy it was.

I don’t know the full extent of these things happening but the school quietly changed the policy over a year later.

This is a perfect example of the rule of unintended consequences. When you make a rule or policy, people will find ways to follow it that serve them best. Even if it isn’t what the people in charge wanted.

Kids lose things a lot.

The school administrators should have seen this coming from a mile away. When making policies, you really need to think through how the students (or anyone) will comply with them.

Supporting a friend through a hard time is one thing, but supporting someone who won’t support themselves is another conversation entirely.

One high school student who watched a friend sit on her phone during every group study session and then complain loudly about failing after every exam found the whole dynamic exhausting over time.

So I’ve been getting pretty annoyed recently because she will get into these strange moods after exams when she’s around my friends and me, but then will go and hang out with a different group and be completely happy.

Her friend has a habit of posting all kinds of cryptic videos.

She then posts videos about how she was “at her lowest but nobody knew,” but never bothers to tell us anything when we continuously ask and try to comfort her, which puts us in a really awkward position.

It’s been especially more awkward recently since we’ve had some major exams, and after every single one she comes out in a stroppy mood, which brings us down because we’re happy we’re done.

She also notices that her friend doesn’t have a strong sense of accountability.

The thing is, she gets upset about not doing well, but whenever we all go to the library to study together she will sit there on her phone or make no effort at all to understand and take in any information we try to teach her.

But then we have to listen to her complain about how she will fail and won’t get into university.

This teen has tried the gentle approach with her friend, but it doesn’t seem to be working.

We’ve tried to comfort her and help countless times, but honestly she just doesn’t put in the effort and it shows.

I know what it’s like to struggle with learning, but there’s a difference between that and knowing you struggle yet refusing to put in effort anyway.

So what else can we do?

She’s starting to lose patience with the whole thing, and so have several other people in her social circle.

It’s become very tiring for all of us and we’re done with it.

Even her best friend straight up ignores her when she’s in a mood now because there’s no point complaining about something that already happened.

At the same time, her friend doesn’t seem to actually want change.

But if we’ve given her the solutions to her problems, there’s not much more we can do.

I try to comfort her and reassure her, but she seems to ignore it and look to someone else to complain to, as if she wants to blame something else for her actions.

I work at a store that sells home good items, and as employees, we get a discount.

This seems like a normal way to handle employee discounts.

The discount can only be applied if a manager-on-duty applies it, meaning a regular employee like me can’t apply the discount for myself or anyone else.

There is also a rule that you can’t apply a discount for yourself, another MOD has to apply it.

Ok, easy enough.

At work last night, I was the relief for “Jen” who is an MOD. Employees are allowed to hold items to buy at the end of their shift, and Jen had something she wanted to return so she could buy something else.

Because her previous purchase had been an employee purchase it needed an MOD authorization code to proceed.

She is being extra careful here, which is smart.

When I told her this, I suggested she go grab the other MOD to process it.

Jen came around put her own authorization ID in. This made me nervous and I asked her twice if we should have another MOD process her return and do her next transaction but Jen told me “I’m an MOD so it’s okay”.

I asked her twice and that was her answer.

Why is she going around a lot of policies?

She wanted her money to go back onto a merchandise gift gard, which is store credit, but that isn’t possible on an employee purchase, so she put it on a gift card, even though she originally paid for the returned item with a credit card.

Her return processed and then she wanted to buy something else. She told me to give her employee discount, but I don’t have authorization so she came around and put her own code in and then just checked herself out.

She better document exactly what is happening.

However, the register was logged in under my account which means my name was on all the receipts.

Unfortunately you can’t use a gift card or merch card on an employee purchase so she didn’t end up buying the item.

This person clearly understands the rules.

It made me nervous because in every job I’ve ever worked in retail, its a huge rules violation to check yourself out or give yourself a discount.

The rules wherever I’ve worked has always been to get another manager even if you’re a manager.

She did the right thing and had to cover for herself to avoid getting in trouble.

As I said, I was nervous so I spoke to the MOD on my shift, who is also the GM of the store, and she told she would deal with it, but ultimately I was never actually in any trouble and while what Jen did was wrong it probably would have gone unnoticed.

She talked to Jen, and I guess it was obvious that I’d said something, and now Jen is pissed at me and has been telling everyone that I’m a snitch and not to be trusted.

This employee followed the policy and made sure to document what happened so any fallout wouldn’t have fallen on her. The manager is just mad that she got in trouble.
