Singapore Garden Festival 2010

I knew that the festival was going to be crowded on weekends. I also knew that the place was going to be packed with people wanting to take photos of themselves near the exhibits. However, due to work commitments, I could only visit during the weekends with DD. Thanks to DD’s job, we got the tickets at 50% off. We also went to the Wine Garden where the nice folks gave us some introductions to the wines they have and a free wine (not theirs though, give us try la, then we would have bought something )

Anyway, the number of photos I managed to take this year despite my trusty tripod and Canon S5 IS were a lot less than 2008. I just don’t understand why the blurry images despite my tripod. Or was it the floor moving because of the mass? Anyway, my best works at the Singapore Garden Festival 2010.

Was really fun when DD and I took our time and just went in our ways to take the photos after determining the route. So many people there and my photo taking normally don’t have anyone in it. That’s when DD said we didn’t take photos of ourselves and we should get one camera that’s able to use a remote. Ok, I wait for DD to get one nice camera with that function

I’m so going to buy the 8 day pass the next round because visiting during weekday, day time was so much easier with less people crowding the first 5 cm of the exhibits and beyond.

A Dress for All Occasions, Well, Maybe Most

Dresses make one feel feminine and more chic. In defining chic, I meant the dress has to make you look and feel good when you wear it. It should elongate your legs, enhance your assets, slimming effect and simply make you look fabulous and knock down everyone when you enter the ballroom.

However, I find it a waste when I can’t use the same dress more than once after attending a wedding. Therefore, I have searched for the dress that can be worn over and over again with some enhancements like accessories, shoes, jackets and shrugs. A few have caught my eye.

Black dress can be versatile. Really worn almost for any functions. Slimming effect if the cut is right.

Just all black can be boring, add a little silver in the right places and the dress is all ready for anything too.

I have a thing for dresses that have hems of different colours to give contrast. Somehow, black and white seem to go well.

Adding sleeves do help when the aircon can be cold. Be a little asymmetrical.

Sometimes, embellishments on the dress can add some effects.

I believe there are more out there. Just have to find them.

Perfect Proposal

Somehow, when a certain age creeps in annually, I’m asked, “So, been proposed yet?” I wonder why the huge concern. Perhaps it’s how life is supposed to be since the dinosaurs went extinct. Ladies are rather excited about being proposed to in a romantic way. Well, this guy went to this show called Perfect Proposal and did it on TV for his girlfriend. Let’s see what he did.

Cute, right? He used his strengths and pulled some strings. I like guys who know how to propose by using their skills like drawing, or even asking someone (or many someones) to help out with the filming (taking photos) of this special day. Love the idea of getting someone with good photography skills to take photos and videos from a hidden place of this whole process. This way, I get to show off the video and photos including the thoughts of the whole process (sounds like Amazing Race that kind). Memorable, right? I can even show it to my kids in future!

Here’s how another guy proposed.

Involved another couple who weren’t dating and getting the fiancée to be involved with lots of hiding himself here and there.

If you were to ask me how I envision mine to be like; I can say that it should be some place with a nice skyline view of the new IR that can be viewed from Marina Barrage. Nice, cool night. Just walking along the pier and perhaps get a chance to have the shelter to ourselves at one of shelters provided along the bridge. I really want to re-take the night view again; this time must bring tripod. And the ring?

While the above is made from diamonds (I think), I like mine to be covered with Swaroski crystals. That way, it’s different from the rest. Cool, right?

Is There Really Fair Employment?

I am not sure how it began just that having looked through various job advertisements asking for all sorts of strengths that a potential candidate should possess, I keep seeing “Please send your resume with PHOTO to . Only shortlisted candidates will be selected.” I don’t mean to be skeptical but does that mean that only nice looking candidates with some skills will be selected?

To think I keep seeing the bus advertisements about fair employment act. Forgot to take photos. Sorry. From what the Tripartite Alliance for Fair Employment Practices (TAFEP) site:

The 5 principles of Fair Employment Practices are:

Recruit and select employees on the basis of merit (such as skills, experience or ability to perform the job), and regardless of age, race, gender, religion, family status or disability.
Treat employees fairly and with respect and implement progressive human resource management systems.
Provide employees with equal opportunity to be considered for training and development based on their strengths and needs, to help them achieve their full potential.
Reward employees fairly based on their ability, performance, contribution and experience.
Abide by labour laws and adopt Tripartite Guidelines which promote fair employment practices.

The practice of fair employment will help to foster an inclusive workplace, one that is built on merit and based on progressive HR practices.

Now, the first part is important. That’s why I spent S$30K on a degree that’s ultimate NOT recognised. Gee, should have gone to London and spent more in order to get a recognised degree. Now, the problem was the money.

So, why are photos required? I never knew that Miss Singapore or Mr Manhunt was ever held in companies. Or were they selected employees to face some judges from Miss Singapore or Mr Manhunt? I am rather obsessed with photo issue because it means whether I will get a new job or not. Did I mention that I hate putting photos on resumes? What purpose do they serve? Are they beneficial to adding value to the companies?

What it Takes to Be A Man

Must really thank The Cathay on Facebook for giving me the tickets to watch The Full Monty. This musical play is by Pangdemonium! Productions. With Adrian Pang, Hossan Leong and Lim Yu Beng in the cast, I was rather impressed with the singing. Never mind that Hossan Leong has sung before, I have seen his youtube videos. In case you wondering who the 6 men are in stripping to their buffs, here’s the link.

This play is adapted from the 1997 movie of the same name. I didn’t watch the movie so I can’t comment much. This play has a theme besides the action. The thing about plays is that the feel is different. Some of the cast were in the audience to create the atmosphere that we were watching Chippendale doing their stuff. Well, I must admit, initially, the response was lack lustre however, as the performance went on, the audience started to get into the groove.

The Full Monty explores what a man feels he should be doing in order to feel like a man again despite the lack of employment. Love, family and commitment were incorporated into it. I must say that communication was also part of the reason why misunderstandings formed.

These days, I try to get the message that movies, plays or whatever event that is going on back home. To understand why they make the movie. Just like what I got back from Shrek: Forever After; “Don’t wait till you’ve lost everything then you realise that it’s all there. Appreciate the small stuff because they lead to bigger things that we see everyday without knowing them.”

In The Full Monty, the message is: “Communication is important. Without it, everything is in the mist. Say what you mean. Beating about the bushes achieves nothing.“

The Rookie

In life, we want to have some form of success. Be it career or something else. We just want to have a chance at being recognized for doing something we feel is the right thing to do. Hence, we have so many contests and here we have one contest for the dream job.

Toy Story 3 is Coming!

It’s incredible that Toy Story 3 is showing soon. I remembered Toy Story being shown and now, it’s the third movie about the toys and their adventures; Woody, Buzz, and many more other characters. In Toy Story 3, there are new toys. Obviously. I love cuddly toys; my favourite being Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear. Never mind that he needs a cane to walk, he is the hugging type. The trailer below shows some of the exciting scenes.

My favourite scene is the one with Mr Potato Head attempting to look strong when Mrs Potato Head admires another toy with muscles. It goes to show that toys are not spared when it comes to looks.

My Affair with Skechers

I went shopping with my mother recently. Supposed to be just window shopping. As we checked out the clothes and caps and shoes, it was towards the end of our trip at Jurong Point that my mum pointed out Skechers. The only shoe shop that we spent the most time in. My mother wanted to find some rain boots. Like what Phua Chu Kang wears although not so loud. She end up with this.

Not the exact colour since I don’t remember the model but it belongs to the Shape Up range. I tested the shoes and found my arches being supported. The sole is curved for better walking purposes. There’s a bounce to the walk and the posture felt better. However, it isn’t for training like running or playing badminton. Purely for walking. The reason is the shape of the sole.

My mother tried 3 sizes before she was satisfied with it. I wanted covered shoes for work purpose and the pair looked too sporty for my work. Therefore I tried this pair.

My feet looked weird. Not sure why. So I tried this pair.

Let’s just say that my arch would ache by 3 hours. Nice pair though. I tried various pairs but all ate the back of my feet. There were a few others that brought me back to school feeling.

Eventually, my mother showed me a pair. Not what I had in mine but I tried it anyway since it wasn’t a heel, just good enough for my work that requires standing most of the time. It’s a boot like sandals with zip. Comfortable. Check out Skechers if you like. The quality of the shoes are truly good.

The Ideal Shopping Experience (Clothes)

I have this ideal scenario of a good shopping experience at any store that sells apparel/clothes.

Display of clothes in orderly manner (be it colour or type).
Display clearly, the sale items in the same rack by order (colour or type).
Come to me when I call for attention.
Acknowledge my presence when I asked to check the item price or just about the item.
Give me space to explore the clothes or shoes, I am just an honest shopper, GEDDIT?
SMILE even when I like to think about it since your price is out of my budget.
Suggest how to accesorise when I ask for tips.

Remember, it is after all my money that contributes to the shop. Now I remember why I like to click “Add to cart” button online. Shopping for clothes should be fun. It’s so much easier to buy online with the nice postman/postwoman to deliver to my door step.

Dress Search

Looking for dresses isn’t easy. The shoulders must look nice and not too squarish, the length must be just right, the waist must look good and the overall figure should look slim. I found the following suitable to be worn on daily basis.

I just wonder how I look in them. Buying online can be tricky when it comes to some clothes. All images linked to the products.
