What is the first thing that you will do once you start off with Twitter?

Obviously, build followers. Right?

This is where a lot of people have missed out on making the most of Twitter. People are so busy following others and making followers that you actually forget the essence of this micro-blogging platform.

Social Media is about interacting with people. It is about networking. It is about exchanging ideas and thoughts with people who have a like-mindedness with you.

But Twitter, these days has become a medium of expressing strength – of follower counts. I have a feeling that this might dilute the very purpose of this platform and destroy the very sanctity of Twitter.

So does that mean that you should not concentrate on building followers? No that is not the thought behind this statement. If you had no followers who is it that you will exchange thoughts and ideas and network with. So, obviously the first step is to build followers. But in order to keep your followers there, you need to interact with them. This interaction in turn will get you even more followers.

What form should this interaction take?

1). Answer Questions -

The first and the best form of interaction is through responding to questions.

Keep an eye on topics that are trending and are of your interest. Twitter search is one of the best places to find out about things that are trending. You can use one of the search operators to find out what other Tweeple are asking. These questions can form the first part of your interaction.

Start by answering questions. People flock to social media websites with questions that they have in the hope that they will get an answer to it. Since Twitter is about 140 characters it is easy for people to ask questions. You will find a lot of people making use of this aspect and asking questions here. Replying to questions from your niche can help you stamp your authority in your niche and consequently get people to follow you.

2). Ask Questions -

Another form of interaction is to ask questions. You can ask questions on your niche. Your questions will get loads of responses if you have been interacting well on twitter. These responses to your questions can form the base to creating newer products, new blog posts, articles or, even a website. You can get thousands of ideas from these responses that you get from your fellow Tweeple.

3). Strike conversations -

Strike conversations with people. This conversation can start by just asking a question like, “What is your favorite social media platform?” Once a conversation starts, the discussions can spread over to knowledge sharing and can go up to joint ventures. You will be able to find even more like minded people with interests in your niche and who can contribute in some way to your cause. In turn you could be of help to them in their ventures.

4). Follow discussion and share your thoughts -

There are numerous discussions that are already taking place on Twitter. If you can use the Twitter search effectively and know how to sue #hashtags, you can keep an eye on these discussions and further participate in them. Share your thoughts and add value to such conversations and you are sure to get a few followers.

Twitter can be a powerful tool if used appropriately. The only rule to follow is – Don’t Spam. Social Media is all about participation and so it Twitter. Add value and you will get rewarded.

Are you on Twitter? If not, then this is the time to be….

Twitter is one of the best micro blogging platform that you could come across. There is a lot of information shared across this platform and it is fun following people who share good and relevant information and at the same time to get followed by people who think that you are sharing valuable information.

I was fascinated at the number of followers people had and was focused on ensuring that I provided valuable content to people so that I could get a huge follower list. I was able to accomplish this to a great extent, though I might not be one of the most sought after guys like Darren Rowse of Problogger, who is my ideal.

As my follower count increased, I felt the need to displaying it on my websites and blogs (to boast of my achievements). The next question was – How do I do it?

I browsed through websites and blogs that gave me information about how to do this. There were not too many tips that I could get but almost all of them referred me to Twittercounter.

Twittercounter is a good service and I like the features that they offer. I started displaying my badge all across my blogs and websites. But the need for customization kept bothering me to find something that is customizable. Obviously the badges were not customizable except for the colors.

That is when I stumbled upon this tip at WPRecipes. It had some coding to be done and some editing on the functions.php file to be done. Since the codes were given, there was not too much of work to be done and things seem to work pretty fine.

But….I wanted a simpler solution.

Then I came across a post at WPBeginner on displaying the total number of followers in text in wordpress. This involved creating a file called as twitter.php and putting it in your themes folder. You could then display the follower count anywhere you wish to by using a small code snippet in you theme file. This too was extremely easy and the code was also there for you to copy.

But…..I wanted an even simpler one.

It is then that I read this post at webm.ag titled “How to display your twitter follower count without using chicklets“. This is one of the easiest way to display your twitter follower count. the code used is as below (Just change USERNAME to your Twitter username).

<?php
$twit = file_get_contents(‘http://twitter.com/users/show/USERNAME.xml’);
$begin = ‘<followers_count>’; $end = ‘</followers_count>’;
$page = $twit;
$parts = explode($begin,$page);
$page = $parts[1];
$parts = explode($end,$page);
$tcount = $parts[0];
if($tcount == ”) { $tcount = ’0′; }
echo ‘<b> ‘.$tcount.’ </b> Followers’;
?>

Use this code and customize how you display your twitter follower count. Wondering why my sidebar still shows the Twittercounter badge!!!!

I am in the process of designing a custom design for my Tweeting Tips, which you will pretty soon be seeing here. I will be using this code there.

There are many variations of Twitter software and management tools available today, whether you’re browsing through your PC, Mac, iPad or mobile device. Each has their own features, but also their limitations. Finding a tool or software to manage your Twitter experience can easily influence your attitudes towards the micro-blogging service both positively and negatively – so choose your Twitter interface tool carefully.

Having used Brizzly (www.brizzly.com) on a PC for several months now to manage my Twitter accounts, I wanted to share some of the benefits so that you too could streamline your experience and clear up some of the clutter that creeps in as you build up your Twitter profile.

Manage Multiple Twitter Accounts

This software allows you to add up to 5 different Twitter profiles and manage them all from the same Brizzly login. For users that are managing multiple brands or perhaps a personal Twitter account and another for business, the ability to quickly switch back & forth is a blessing. Your follower lists and other standard Twitter functions are clearly separate and easy to manage. You can also add a Facebook account (new feature).

Twitter Features (Already) Included

For the most part, whatever you can do when you’re logged directly into Twitter, you can also accomplish using Brizzly. Among the basic features that you’ll have no problem continuing to use are: post new tweets, retweet, send/receive direct messages, building follower lists and much more.

The additional features that Brizzly adds to the basic Twitter interface greatly increase your productivity and ease-of-use when considering new users to follow, post photos and other tasks you’re accustomed to.

Save Your Tweet Drafts

There are the rare occasions when you draft a tweet, but you’re not quite ready to post it yet. Within the Brizzly tool, any tweets that you write can be saved as a draft for later publishing. Perhaps you’re prepping to tweet about a news story you’re writing or a response to a controversial topic, but you’re not quite done researching yet – save your thoughts to a draft and then revisit them later when you’re more prepared or the timing is more appropriate.

See Embedded Info Directly in Brizzly

If you hate clicking on shortened URLs, YouTube and Twitpic links to go see what people are talking about, you’ll love the embedded auto-preview of all these elements when you’re reading your Twitter stream in Brizzly.

Within Brizzly, you’ll know BEFORE YOU CLICK, if people are posting affiliate links, promoting their products w/ masked URL shorteners and also see the domains the information is on so you know if you want to go there.

Additionally, YouTube videos can be played within your Twitter stream – you don’t have to go over to YouTube to see them. Tweeted photos also appear inline, much the same way the videos are embedded.

Continuous Scrolling to Pull Up History

If you’re like me, you hate having to hit the “More” button on your Twitter stream to keep reading older tweets. Brizzly constantly updates and adds new tweets to the stream as you scroll down the page – much like the image search feature on Bing.

The Best Feature – Mute Annoying People You Follow

The top reason why I believe you should consider using Brizzly is the “mute follower” feature. If you’ve been using Twitter for any amount of time, you’re sure to be following some people that a) tweet too much or b) you’re following for reasons other than actually hearing what they have to say. The “mute” feature allows you to follow the people you want to – perhaps for good posture in your community – but also allows you to block all of their tweets from appearing in your reader/stream.

There are several other less impactful features in the Brizzly interface, so give it a try for awhile and see if it helps improve your time interfacing on Twitter.

Finally Twitter has done it. They have admitted that they are out to commercialize the platform and earn money from it (as though they have not been doing it as yet).

That is good news for a lot of people who have been living with that itch to advertise on Twitter and make huge money. But is it that lucrative and option? I would not be the best person to comment on it. Let’s see how it progresses with time.

So, Twitter has introduced a few features in the past couple of weeks or, so. Some are cool and some are not that cool.

Twitter’s New Features

What’s new with Twitter? There are 4-5 new features that they have launched. Let’s see what these new features are.

1). Sponsored Tweets -

Twitter is calling this “Promoted Tweets”. This means that now advertisers can place their tweets on top of the search results at Twitter for a price which I believe Twitter is yet to decide on.

The search at Twitter was gradually becoming a competitor to Google’s search engine. There are over 600 million daily search queries at Twitter and with that amount of searches, promoting a few sponsored tweets at the search results certainly makes sense so far as Twitter is concerned. I personally think that it would also make commercial sense to the advertisers as well.

2). Commercial Accounts -

Now that Twitter is getting into Sponsored Tweets, there was always a requirement for a commercial account. So Twitter is adding commercial accounts. As the name suggests it will be accounts that will have some kind of a preference in terms of advertising on the platform. Also these accounts will be paid accounts, I presume and you will have to pay an amount for getting a commercial account. What kind of preferences, these accounts get is something that is to be seen.

3). Analytics for the Promoted Tweets -

If you own a commercial account and you are advertising on Twitter and you are also paying for the promoted tweets, you will demand analytics around your campaigns. So Twitter couldn’t have lived without it. They had to provide analytics to their commercial account holders.

So that is the next feature that Twitter is coming out with. So now, you will be able to monitor the number of clicks that you get on a link and the like with this new analytics at Twitter.

4). URL Shortners -

Since Twitter had the 140 character limitation, it was always a constraint to go ahead and post a link in your tweets. You had to then, go to a third party application to shorten your links and then come back and post the tweet or, you had to use some 3rd party client like Tweetdeck etc. to shorten links and post them.

But now, you will no more have to do it, because Twitter is coming up with its own URL shortening service. I am not sure as how good it will be and if it will provide some kind of statistics around the clicks on the URL like bit.ly provides. But it is indeed a welcome feature.

5). Photo Sharing Apps -

Another welcome feature in Twitter, because till now photo sharing could only be done through 3rd party apps and the process was not too encouraging for an avid Twitter user like me. So I preferred not to share any photos at Twitter in most instances.

6) Organized and Annotated tweets -

I am not too sure about how this works, but I think this would help us in doing away with the hashtags which was the only way of organizing tweets based on topics. I am unhappy with hashtags because of the precious few words it occupied in the tweets. Now with this new feature I will save on a few words and can still organize and tag my tweets. Welcome….

What do you think about these changes that Twitter is bringing in? Don’t forget to post your comments.

Twitter, it seems is trying everything to stop the abuse of this system!!

A few days back, I was using one of my software that used the Twitter API to manage my followers and following lists. I was monitoring the activities of almost 70 of my followers and found that they were not too active and hence I decided to unfollow them.

I selected these followers and hit the “unfollow” button. I got an error saying that there was an error and that the tool could not bulk unfollow the followers. I was surprised at this.

In order to verify this I straight away headed over to my Buzzom Premium account which has quite a few handy features for serious Twitter Marketers. I have had this account since some time now and have found their features extremely handy in my Twitter Marketing. When I went ahead to select the above said followers to unfollow them, Buzzom came up with the same message saying that I cannot bulk unfollow followers and that I have to do it individually.

How feasible is it to unfollow about 200 odd followers who have been inactive for quite some time?

It is not feasible enough, right? Then how did Twitter decide that they would stop this feature all together.

I often find that there are a lot of followers following me who all of a sudden take to Tweeting Spams and unnecessary messages which I do not agree to. If I wish to unfollow them now, I will have to do that individually. Why should I do that?

I understand Twitter’s point of view in checking spam and ensuring that the network is clean. I also understand the fact that they treat bulk follow and unfollow as signs of Spamming, but how advisable is it to take the control of the users in at least deciding who should follow them?

Of the many things that I hate about Twitter, there is this one more thing that has been added to my list.

I feel that this act of Twitter is a breach of my privacy!

What is your opinion on this?

Tweeting has taken a new dimension since it came to be a phenomenon in the early 2009. Twitter is now more than a 140 character answer to a question, “What are you doing?”. It is business for a lot of people, entertainment for a few others, medium of interaction for yet others and a diary for yet some others.

Since the first day when Twitter became a craze, there have been quite a few additional features as well, that Twitter has added. Features that would make tweeting even more fun, features that could increase the utility of the tool and some features that could simplify the process of tweeting.

One such feature that is a bit too much under-utilized is that of setting personalized backgrounds for your Twitter page.

What is a background?

Every Twitter profile has a page of its own and this is accessible from the URL, http://www.twitter.com/profilename. When you initially set up your account with Twitter, you get an option to customize it.

(You can click the image to enlarge it)

Twitter gives you a choice to upload your own graphics and set your background up, the way you wish. Once you have uploaded your graphics, you can match it up with custom colors for the rest of the page.

Why should you Customize your profile?

You can see from the the above profile page of mine that it has a totally different look than the normal twitter profile page. Can you feel the difference?

After all why should your customize your profile? Isn’t the normal twitter profile page just fine?

Internet Marketing is all about building a brand. You are known by the brand that you represent. Think of Jeremy Schoemaker without the Shoemoney brand. Can you Imagine Carl Ocab without the “13-year old Kidblogger” brand? Difficult to imagine, right?

It is the century of the brand. It is brand name that can help you make it big in the Internet Marketing world. Hence it is very important for you to establish your brand name.

The most important thing when you are aiming at establishing a brand name is to customize everything that relates to your brand. You should have your own logo, your own custom designs, custom signatures etc. Visibility is what helps you establish a unique identity for your brand and it is a unique identity that will make you brand stand apart in the crowd.

It is here that a custom profile page comes in handy. It gives your brand a unique identity and gives you an option of displaying your brand name, your brand logo and a punchline statement thus creating visibility for your brand.

Building a custom design for your profile page.

It is not too difficult to design a custom profile page for your Twitter profile. If you know how to watch a video and follow simple instructions you can design a custom profile page easily. The following are a few helpful resources that could help you design a customer Twitter profile page.

1). Mashable – An extremely informative and good resources to understand the different Twitter backgrounds and how to make one.

The last few days saw the launch of quite a few products for affiliate marketers. But the one that was particularly interesting for me was a tool that claimed to be packing in huge opportunities for Affiliate Marketers at Clickbank, who were also using Twitter – Tweetomatic Profiteer.

From the promos and the pre-launch hype around this product, the claims were extremely tall, even claiming to fill your bank accounts with huge cash without a lot of work because the software could do everything on its own.

The kind of internet marketer that I am, I was pretty keen on knowing more about this tool and hence was waiting for the launch. I was amongst the first ones to have bought this software with the expectation that there is something amazing hidden in there.

Was it a disappointment?

Did I waste my money on the software?

I spent around $144 for the Infinity PRO version which promised ability to add multiple Twitter accounts. Its been more than a week that I have been using it. This blog post is my opinion about this software.

A Launch gone stale -

I was absolutely disgusted with the approach that the makers of Tweetomatic Profiteer took towards launching it. In the pre-launch that these guys did, they kept saying that they will only release a few copies of this software just because they do not want to saturate the market.

Did they keep their promise?

Absolutely not!! They are still selling this software just like they normally did. It was absolutely unfair on their part to make these claims if they had no plans to stick to it. That was a bad launch, which almost instantly made me question the credibility of the people who launched the software. Bad work Mike Wright and Imran S.

Another claim that they made – (Let me out it in their words)

We also strongly believe in video sales letters and we will be using this and of course a text sales letter when we launch.

No text sales letter at all. Where is it, if they were planning to put it in place. Another reason to question their credibility.

I had already bought Tweetomatic Profiteer by this time and I had already started thinking of asking for a refund. But as I started using the software, things started getting even more messier. I was running Windows 7 on my computer and the software would just not work with it. It kept popping up some strange error that said, “There has been an error. Please try again”. I just kept trying and nothing happened.

There support is also not that great. I wrote about this to their support, but all I got was a pdf with some troubleshooting steps to get the software to “run as an administrator”, which I was already doing. Since then, there has been no response from them.

But fortunately for me, I got a chance to get the software to work once before this error started popping up. I was absolutely horrified at the interface and the look and feel of the software. It appeared as if it was an MS-Access database from the look of it. Selecting and filtering did not work. Strange things kept happening. Completed actions did not confirm that an action was completed by either a redirect or, a smooth transition to another step.

Bottom-line……A lot of flaws, which shows that the makers did not test it enough to identify these flaws. They were not even prepared for the support.

I enjoyed the concept though and would have loved to see the software with a better interface and bug-free, especially when I have had to shed out $144.00 for the upgraded version of the software.

It is hence that I did not ask for a refund yet and would be waiting for a few more days to see if there are any enhancements. After all I have 60 days as per Clickbank’s refund policy.

Update on 18th March 2010 – I got a reply from their support team about 3 days back in which they sent me a link to download the latest update. Interestingly all of the bugs above was fixed in this update and the tool was functioning smooth. I was able to send out about 40 odd tweets since then and also auto follow some targetted tweeple.

What now remains is an improvement to the interface of the tool. Waiting for the same.

Wrong question!!! Do you know how effective is your Twitter Search?

Twitter search is the next best search engine after Google and if you are not utilizing it, you are missing out on something very important.

Though you’ll find a Twitter search box on the homepage of Twitter, I would not recommend using that. You could rather visit the dedicated search page for Twitter at http://search.twitter.com.

The search engine at Twitter is similar to that of Google except that the search results will be from tweets at Twitter. So your intention of search will also be to find something specific that somebody had tweeted about the object in question.

Twitter is a place where a large part of the online business happens today. Hence its is extremely important for you to understand how their search works. Since the objective of every online business is to provide a solution to a problem, you will find a lot of your business inducers at Twitter. People keep tweeting about their problems, they ask questions on concerns that they have and all of this will in some way give you an opportunity to position yourselves as a brand or, a product.

But will a generic search for a term like “gardening” give you targeted results? Of course, not. You have to search specifically for things that you want to search. This might not be easy.

Like in Google, there are a handful, very helpful operators or, operands as it is called, in Twitter as well. If you know how to and where to use them, you will get laser-focused search results.

Search Operators in Twitter

Let us look at a few such search operators in Twitter.

1). Default Operator – It is the default search that you will do. Enter any term and the search returns all tweets that have both the terms in it.

2). Quote Search Operator – As in Google, just enter your search terms in a quote and it will return the exact phrase match results.

3). OR operator – The OR operator is used to search either of two terms. For eg: your could search walking OR Jogging, which will return the results for either walking or, jogging.

4). The MINUS operator – While searching in Google, you normally use a MINUS ( – ) just before the term that you are searching to filter results with that particular term. The same is the case with Twitter as well. Searching with the term -free will remove all searches with the term ‘free’ in it.

5). HASHTAG operator – A “hashtag” represented by a #, is a tag that is used for tweets that refer to a specific topic. For eg:, all topics related to dog-training could be tagged #dog-training. This way it becomes easy for anyone to keep a track of specific topic. At twitter search you could also search using a hashtag.

6). PERSON operator – In case you wish to search for tweets sent to a specific person or, tweets that have been sent by a specific person, you could use the “person” operator. This is done by adding either from: or, to: before the name to be searched.

7). REFERENCING operator – In Twitter, you use the @ tag to reference to people. For eg: if you wish to send out a direct message to a specific person, you can do it by just adding the @ tag in front of the person’s name. So a tweet starting with @dkspeaks will be a tweet that is referenced to that person or, a direct message to dkspeaks. Hence it also becomes a very important operator when searching on Twitter. You can search for specific tweets referencing to a specific person by searching for @ followed by the person’s name.

8). LOCATION operator – You can search for specific tweets on Twitter that are for a specific location. If you want to know about a specific restaurant near a specific place then, just enter the search term followed by near:”location” (enter the name of the location in the quotes) and you will get all the tweets for locations nearby the entered location.

9). DISTANCE operator – To the above discussed operator, if you add another operator specifying the distance from the location, your tweets will be based on this search. For eg: a search with the term near:LA within: 5mi will return all results that are near LA and withing 5 miles.

10). SOURCE Operator – You can search for specific tweets from sources. Since Twitter has an API and there are numerous applications that can help you post to Twitter, tweets could come in from a variety of such sources. In case you wish to search tweets from a specific source, you can do that by just entering the search term or, phrase followed by the source. For eg: A search with the following, “dkspeaks posts” source:tweetdeck, will return results for the term ‘dkspeaks posts’ that were sent from Tweetdeck.

11). QUESTION operator – As an internet marketer, I am constantly on the lookout for problems that people have so that I can provide them with a solution to it. This is where the Question operator at Twitter helps me. Searching with a term followed by a question mark return tweets that contain results where a question is asked for that specific search term. For eg: I search with ‘blogging tools ?’ and get a list of tweets that have some question related to blogging tools.

12). FILTER operator – You can filter your twitter search results whichever way you want. Just add the operator ‘filter:’ after your search term. For eg: a search with the term, jokes filter:links, will return tweets with the term jokes and linking to URLs.

Proper use of these operators or, a combination of these operators could give you targetted search results, which can be extremely useful if you wish to build authority. You can find tweets of importance which could be a trigger to newer ideas and thus newer businesses.

Did you get a chance to check out the new kid on the block – Google Buzz?

If you are wondering as to why is that I am talking about a Google app at a blog that talks about Twitter, then you should read on to find the reason.

So who is “Google Buzz”? It is a new service launched by Google and is somewhat similar to Twitter. It was launched about a week back and in a short span of time have claimed to have a huge following.

Is Google Buzz a competitor to Twitter?

I am a fan of Twitter and have no reason to think that Google Buzz can ever threaten Twitter. At least that is my opinion as an ardent admirer of the microblogging platform. But if I take a neutral vies to this question and evaluate both these services then I feel that sometime in the future, if Google improves this service, it could turn out to be a competition to Twitter.

Google Buzz Vs Twitter

Let’s look at a comparison between the Twitter and Buzz, so that we have an apple to apple comparison.

Word Limit – The very unique aspect of Twitter is the fact that you have to limit your entire conversation to 140 words. That is a challenge and is also the beauty of the service. Remove that and there is nothing called as micro-blogging. Google Buzz had no such word limits. That means you can even write an entire blog.

Micro-Blogging – The previous point proves that there is nothing to be called as micro-blogging in Google Buzz. It is in fact a unique blog that facilitates interaction to a much higher intensity. Twitter as we all know is all about micro-blogging.

Picture attachments – With Google Buzz, you an even attach a picture to your message but with Twitter, I have yet not come across any such option.

Commenting options – Buzz has a unique way of interaction. People who follow you can comment on specific posts that you have made, more like a blog itself. This makes a particular conversation very interactive. But in Twitter, we do not have any such option. The only option that we have is to send a direct message to a particular person.

Accessing option – Google Buzz cannot be accessed as an independent service. You can only access Buzz if you have a gmail account, whereas Twitter works as an independent application.

Automatic Posting – Twitter can post automatically to it, thanks to the API which has helped independent developers create a dozen of applications which can do this job. Google Buzz, as on date lacks any such option or, service. But with gradual developments and increase in usage of the service I think this feature will also be developed.

These are some of the differences that I found. In case you have any more, you can write about it in the comment box below.

I have joined Google Buzz. You an follow me here.
