Visiting a night market is definitely one of the best ways to get a glimpse of local culture in Taiwan and, of course, to have a bite of authentic Taiwanese food.

As we walked along in the hustle and bustle of the night market, the pungent smell of stinky tofu (a delicacy in Taiwan) hit me in the face! Well, it's the same love or hate relationship most people have with durian; you can smell this popular fermented tofu a mile away and find it everywhere.

Southeast Asians have their durian, but the Taiwanese insist on stinky tofu when it comes to scarfing something truly fetid. Some Taiwanese people that love stinky tofu will stay away from durian and Malaysian that love durian will stay away from stinky tofu.

It smells bad, but it's no monkey brains, and being a non-lover of bean curd (Japanese tofu is the only tofu I eat) myself, I took up the challenge and tried it anyway! I thought, "How bad could this be?"

In Taiwan, stinky tofu is usually served fried, dipped in a savory sauce and eaten with pickled cabbage.

After sampling it... pretty bad, is the answer.

Stinky tofu does indeed live up to its name! I'll never get used to the smell and with that, I'm destined never again for stinky tofu.

The Taiwanese say that the stinkier the tofu is, the more delicious it is.

However, millions love stinky tofu. Try it; you could be one of them. Even if you don't like it, at least you have merited a few bragging rights.

Back from family vacation and now, it's back to reality, back to blogging! I undoubtedly have many stories and thousands of pictures to share (we were on an 8-day tour that covered almost the whole of Taiwan Island), but I've been busy since getting back home, so you can expect to hear more from me about Taiwan in the coming weeks!

Also known as Formosa, meaning "Beautiful Island", the island of Taiwan is full of life, not only it has heaps to see and do and buy and eat, getting around is a cinch!

It's finally here... vacation time! I'm flying off to Taiwan with my family for an 8-day vacation, tomorrow!

I kinda feel like a giddy kid with excitement about finally getting to explore the top sights and attractions of Taiwan, fulfill my shopping craving, and eat what the locals eat. Looking over the tour itinerary alone gets me excited!

I was trying to pack light that way I have room for all my new clothes, shoes and stuff that I'll buy for Ralph and I. After packing and repacking I'm finally all packed (I hope)!

Honestly, I'm thrilled since it has been quite some time since our last family vacation but then I'm also sad that Ralph couldn't join us. *mixed feelings*

Ahhh... okay, I'm off to bed now! *tick-tock-tick-tock*

Counting Down To Vacation

Time is flipping away, and before I knew it, only 3 days left until my family and I leave for a VACATION!!!

Well, I'm going to... (a destination of their choice / a flight of about 5 hours from Malaysia / a country I've never been to)

Before leaving for our destination, my siblings had started comparing with comprehensive comparison sites to search for cheap flight tickets, cheap package holidays, accommodation, car rentals and the best deal available.

I normally do not like package tours but when it comes to traveling with elderly parents, packaged tours may seem like a good idea. There are so many factors to take into consideration when considering a family holiday that it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Younger people can manage with holidays that are more adventurous without having to plan the details of the trip but 8 countries in 8 days (for instance) are just not realistic for many senior travelers!

So we grabbed us an all-inclusive travel deal, which included the airfares, hotels, meals and even sightseeing. An all-inclusive deal is very convenient and we can actually have a stress-free holiday where others do everything for us. All things are arranged and already settled.
Now, I just need to pull my suitcase out and start packing!

“I look fat. I hate my body.”
“She can eat anything she wants. I hate her.”
“I exercise like a dog, but why am I still fat?”
“I would be happy if I could just get skinny.”
“If you're fat then what am I?”

Hmmm. Sound familiar?

Nearly every woman has some form of dissatisfaction with her body and weight is the overwhelming concern for many.

I am not painfully skinny, nor am I extremely fat, but frankly, my body composition is flabby rather than toned. I wish I could have toned arms and thighs! Before you judge me and tell me I've a negative self-image, here is a picture of me in a bikini!

Well, if I've a negative self-image, I'd avoid going out to the beach where swimsuits are usually worn and I'd act in a way to reinforce this image by going on a strict diet or exercising like a mad woman. People who have extremely good-looking bodies are people who eat right and consistently exercise! I don't workout at all, I can't resist stimulating and fattening foods, and therefore I accept my flaws even though there have been times when I wish I was a little skinner.

So what are the reasons I don't put on weight easily (it's actually a miracle I weight 48-49 kg) and you may be packing on the pounds (and might continue to be)!

There are many possible answers to these questions, but few certainties.

#1 Insufficient sleep

Ralph has always been a fan of Gary Moore and always will be. To him Gary Moore was one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived on this planet!

Fooled around with the guitar and played The Loner.

Well, one of the things that he loves to do in his free time is jamming on an Ibanez Artist with recorded backing tracks although I'm the only ~~screaming~~ fan.

I'd say The Loner is my favorite all time track by Gary Moore. It's a guitar instrumental piece, flows with emotion and it truly feels like the saga of someone who's alone in the world... Listen to how the renowned Irish rock guitarist made the guitar cry!

I'll sometimes realize how I already forgot how tasteful my favorite cup of coffee is because I'm already to drinking hurriedly. Now is not the time to hurry up, so I'm relishing the taste while I drink my smoothie that Ralph bought me earlier on and enjoying it!

However, I was SHOCKED to find that my cup of Strawberry Pudding Au Lait (LARGE) with pearls and rainbow jelly was RM9.90!

I think it's a tad expensive, but he said he doesn't mind paying a little bit more 'cause I love ~~Chatime~~ rainbow.

Uh-oh, I'm oh so bloated! *now looking like I'm about 2 months pregnant!!!*

Aliens Exist

I enjoy action spectacle and Battleship, a movie inspired by the classic board game has plenty of it! With an onslaught of jaw-dropping visual effects and non-stop action, Battleship booms onto the screen with style and scale. It has got a bit of everything - an alien invasion, antihero who saves the world, and a splash of romance and sprays of humor. Oh and how to impress a girl by getting her a chicken burrito

Foxy bikini model, Brooklyn Decker and Taylor Kitsch

Pop star Rihanna plays a naval gunner; in the movie, she has no make up, short brown hair and she's still hot!

Battleship is not like any other Alien film though. The silly-looking aliens here are selective attackers who have no intention of killing humans. They only destroy lifeless commodities like roads, bridges, vehicles, etc for some mysterious reason.

Speaking of aliens, do you believe that aliens or another life form exists beyond our solar system?

This song, by American pop punk band Blink-182 is upbeat energetic, catchy with funny lyrics and... yes, I believe aliens do exist (sometimes I feel like one), we are definitely NOT alone!

I would assume that if you were a fan of pop music, you would enjoy most of the songs on pop queen Katy Perry's album - Teenage Dream.

So what's your favorite song?

I personally love 'The One That Got Away'. You've probably heard this song a billion times on the radio, and it was so overplayed even deaf people have heard it! Well, this song is just as catchy as it's meaningful, and I bet many people could relate.

It's a great song for those who got a loved one who, as the song implies, got away. However, it's also a great song to dedicate to an ex who screwed you in a relationship, and now rubbing it in their face, that you (the best ever) got away!

Western Food @ Hup Soon Restaurant, SS3 PJ

Ralph and I love checking out places to eat, and since we had never been to this restaurant, our friend Kelvin decided to bring us here for simple yet delicious western food, not long ago.

If I'm not mistaken, the restaurant has been in business for many, many years!

I would say the food was pretty good and reasonably priced.

Cream of Mushroom Soup

Kelvin had the Lamb Chop with Mushroom Sauce. I think I'll give it a try on my next visit.

My Chicken Chop - served with a side of fries and creamy salad and generously topped with my favorite mushroom sauce!

The Grilled Salmon was perfectly grilled and juicy, but of course, you can't compare it to the ones that you get from Chili's Grill & Bar.

Hmm, I'm getting hungry, again!

Banana Milkshake without Ice Cream

With bananas I love them in smoothies, muffins, breads etc but I don't really like to have it as is. So I was craving a banana milkshake and had no ice cream in the freezer. Here's what I did with my leftover ripe bananas!

Place all the ingredients (sliced banana, cold whole milk and honey) into the blender.

Blend until smooth and creamy then pour into a large glass and enjoy!

I especially love it for how quick and easy it's to make this thick and creamy shake! Also, a banana milkshake is a nutritious drink that is healthy for my digestive system.

Whether or not you need to put on weight, every one of us NEEDS a milkshake – at least occasionally!

Taylor Swift's "Hunger Games" single - "Safe & Sound"

Yesterday, we went to watch the highly anticipated movie based on the novel by Suzanne Collins – The Hunger Games!

The Hunger Games is a dark and engaging action-adventure laced with social critique and dystopian sci-fi, set in a fictional country of Panem, and about a repressive government which after putting down the rebellion, keeps down the 12 rebellious districts as best they can. One tool is The Hunger Games; an annual contest that selects two children from each rebel district to battle in an only-one-survivor show, 24 kids, and 23 will die.

Having not read of the novel, I have to say the movie was far more intense than I expected, credit to Jennifer Lawrence, who plays the lead role of Katniss Everdeen!

With action, compassion and especially Jennifer Lawrence, not only this adaptation hits a bull’s-eye, The Hunger Games just hit the bull's-eye with its soundtrack, too!

Country superstar Taylor Swift and The Hunger Games seem like an ideal combination.

Safe & Sound was one of the first songs released from the movie's soundtrack, and it remains one of my favorites. The lyrics relate to the Hunger Games plot, and the song plays out like an intensely emotional lullaby with Swift's fragile voice and accompanied by the soothing vocals of The Civil Wars's Joy Williams.

Don’t you dare look out your window darling / Everything’s on fire / The war outside our door keeps raging on / Hold onto this lullaby / Even when the music’s gone...

The video's mood matches the song's haunting and almost eerie sound, featuring a solo Swift wandering through a desolate countryside on her way to an abandoned cabin where she finds a Mockingjay pin, one of the signature symbols of the movie...

Kwai Lam Seafood Restaurant @ Kg. Melayu Subang

I didn't even know this place existed until our friend Kelvin brought us here on a Saturday night for dinner and raved about how good the food was.

I was surprised by how busy and bustling the restaurant was, with almost every table occupied!

However, it took a good amount of time to have our order taken and for our food to arrive.

Kelvin & Bavindh

Fried Chicken Wings (RM19.20 for 8 pieces) – they were ok, nothing special.

Hokkien Mee & Bee Hoon (RM10)

Didn't try this one 'cause I don't fancy Hokkien Mee at all, but the plate was wiped clean within minutes and Ralph said it was not bad.

Vegetable Dish (RM10)

Grilled Fish (RM21) - it was really good and fresh!

Sauces

Kam Heong Crabs (RM77) - RM53 per kg.

The Kam Heong style crabs may not have an appealing appearance with curry leaves, dried shrimps and spices, but it could capture attention the moment it was served, thanks to the heady fragrance.

We all love crab especially the big fat and meaty fresh crab, but seafood in general, and crabs in particular, are getting pretty pricey nowadays.

Including drinks, our total bill came out to RM146, which I thought was reasonable and I walked out with a fat belly!

We came here on a late evening with my siblings and I'm glad we did because I didn't know other than drinks, they also serve mille crepe cakes, something I still haven't tired of!

Pick-Me-Up Scrumptious Desserts and Snacks @ Kuchai Lama

Honestly, I had never heard of this cafe before until the lovely owners of Pick-Me-Up, in Kuchai Lama, invited me to a food review recently. I was quite exhausted that day and pick-me-up is usually just what I need, in the form of dessert and snacks. Who doesn't need a scrumptious pick-me-up after a long day?

Food is, by necessity, the fuel of life, but more than that, it's fun, and enjoyable and best shared with others, so I brought Ralph and Kelvin along. I began to consider them good food critics!

I wouldn't rave about everything I ate, but it's hard not to marvel at most of it as the super-yummy desserts and snacks served gave me an extra cheer, energy and satisfaction!

We're always happy to try something different, something new and something delicious. Ice-cream burrito was unique and extremely tasty! We still cannot stop thinking about how great their Best Seller was.

My friend, Kelvin, was hooked with this one! He said, this beats bubur cha-cha flat out and would not mind taking his parents to try this. The oriental combo on this Tower Shaved Ice is just perfect with the Soya milk ice at the bottom layer, which adds the milky taste to it.

A must try, I would say. The cheesy sauce with a dash of mayonnaise makes the whole nachos a simply irresistible snack that I would enjoy anytime, anywhere.

#13 Nutella French Toast (RM5.50) with peanut butter and splashed with chocolate sauce was a great combo for the sweet tooth out there and the toast was crunchy (without the ice cream on top, of course)!

This to Ralph came as a shocker. The look does not do the justice to this dish according to him. It was simply scrumptious bunch of fries served with cooked chicken with spices covered with cheesy sauce. How he wishes other fast food outlets would serve such combo. Well, at least someone came out with this idea... Pick-Me-Up it is!

Ralph seemed to love this one! Perhaps the tantalizing taste of sweet, sour and vanilla made him cheerful after a hard day work. The ice-cream separator in between is a superb idea.

The cafe champions on its 'fusion' concept and the owners are champion dessert inventors. The ingredient combinations are clever and I would not doubt the other items are delicious.

Atmosphere-wise, we found the cafe was spacious, clean and cozy. It was totally somewhere I would go all the time if I lived nearby, simply because it is convenient and more enjoyable as this place provided most of the delicious desserts and snacks that can fulfill our taste sensations at affordable prices.

With the first opening of Pick-Me-Up outlet in Malaysia, now you can nourish your taste buds with a variety of tastefulness from their very own blended delectable desserts and snacks!

A wonderful evening "pick me up", need we say more!
