Update on results from Congregational Meeting:

A special congregational meeting was held on Tuesday, October 27th to authorize the sale of 128 Montrose Avenue. The agenda included a series of short presentations by our President, David Baum, Marc Schaevitz and Arnie Budin. After a question and answer period, the vote was 75-1 in favor of authorizing the Montrose Committee to sell the property contingent upon approval of the subdivision that would leave Temple with approximately 25% of the land that abuts our parking lot.

As was discussed at our Annual Meeting on May 30, we indicated that we were going to explore a number of options for our adjacent property at 128 Montrose Ave Among those options was a potential subdivision of the property and sale of the home.

On October 16th the home was placed on the market. Within days of the listing, we received a number of credible offers. While there can be no assurance that we might accept one of these offers, TSTI’s by-laws require a congregational vote to enter into a sale of property.

As these offers are time-sensitive, we determined that it was in TSTI’s best interest to hold such meeting as quickly as our by-laws permit. While more time would have been preferable, we did not want any delay on TSTI’s part to put a potentially attractive alternative at risk.

Mr. Kurzweil’s work has appeared in New York Magazine, the L.A. Times, the Miami Herald, Newsday, and the Jewish Week of New York.

Jewish Meditation

Jewish meditation is a spiritual practice found within the Jewish tradition. Using images, words and symbols that come from a variety of Jewish sources, it is a method of slowing down, calming the mind, relaxing the body and exploring the silence within. Through Jewish meditation, we can connect to a sense of spirituality as we shift our focus from “doing” and “accomplishing” to simply being present to experience the moment.

We invite you to join us for an introduction to some core Jewish Meditation Practices. Each session will be offered in a supportive and safe environment. No experience or knowledge of meditation is necessary. Feel free to attend one or more sessions

Exodus: History, Memory and Community Identity

Carol L. Meyers holds the Mary Wilson Professorship in Religion at Duke University. A specialist in biblical studies and archaeology, Ms. Meyers is a prominent scholar in the biblical world and co-director of archaeological field projects. She is a consultant on media productions focusing on the Bible including, Nova’s “The Bible’s Buried Secrets” recently featured on PBS.

Midnight Run

Each winter, STISY takes a group to New York City, supplied with warm winter clothing and food. We then distribute these essential, winter supplies to homeless friends. In the city, Bridges, an organization devoted to the care of the homeless, will join us on our bus and direct us along a safe and predetermined route through the city. We will not be walking the streets of NYC; the group will stay together at all times.

Each time we enter another relationship, join an organization, take a new job, begin a new challenge – each time we reach for something else, we analyze the risk and anticipate the reward –hoping it will turn out as planned.

We leave the homes and congregations in which we grew up, go off to college and graduate school, marry and start our own families- and join our own congregations. And so it was for Steven and me more than 16 years ago – when we deselected the synagogues closer to home in favor of Sharey Tefilo-Israel- it’s wonderful Cantor, charming new student Rabbi, eclectic and welcoming membership. We were looking for a compromise between what we were each used to – what we each wanted in a spiritual home for ourselves and our children – what felt right.
