Drake - "Over" - First Single Off The "Thank Me Later" LP

I'm kind of surprised Drake chose a song like "Over" as the first single from his new album Thank Me Later. I think the track is decent but it's not what I would expect a fairly new artist to lead a record with since it's not very radio friendly or uptempo.

I wasn't even feeling "Over" at first but I gave it a few more listens, paid closer attention to the lyrics and now I'm starting to come around. I appreciate a song that grows on you more than a song that sounds hot at first but you quickly get sick of it which is most of the garbage you hear these days. I think this is a track that could have some longevity because it's something you will want to listen to over and over again. It might be a slow burner up the charts but it might also stick around for awhile.

I guess Drake feels confident with his selection because he already has a huge fan base and they are just feenin' for some new material from him. At this point, it doesn't even matter what he releases as the first single because it's going to sell regardless.

It's actually kind of cool that he can release whatever he feels is the best song as the first single and not have to be a slave to radio or record sales. I can definitely appreciate that. It used to be like that back in the day and it's what Hip Hop needs to get back to in the future. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that will never happen since it's all about the singles these days with iTunes and other online music stores.

B.o.B. has to be one of the best and most creative rappers out right now. He doesn't stick to the status quo and he just continues to make good music, regardless of whether it fits with the current state of Hip Hop or not. He mixes all types of genres from Rock, Blues, Soul and R&B and mixes it up to create his own version of Hip Hop. You gotta love his originality. Dude even plays the guitar and sings! Check this apperance with DJ Green Lantern on Sirius' Hip Hop Nation. DOPE!

His new track "Not Love" is definitely more serious than most singles you'll hear these days and that is probably why it sticks out. It reminds me of the days when artists would release good songs instead of what would sell or sound good on the radio. This is just a dope track all around.

His official first single "Nothing On You" featuring Bruno Mars has been climbing up the charts and is finally starting to get some serious radio play. This dude needs to get some shine because he's got some serious talent. I'd really like to see him blow up and this might be the single that helps him do it.

Damn! Another video already? Luda is definitely motivated these days. He's already dropping "My Chick Bad" as the second single from the new Battle of the Sexes album and it doesn't even drop until March 9th. He'll show you how to do this, son!

Luda sounds rejuvenated and sharper than ever. He's always been one of my favorite rappers because of his witty and humorous lyrics and I'm definitely looking forward to hearing what kind of heat he's got on this new one.

Snoop Dogg "That Tree" Feat. Kid Cudi; Produced By Diplo

This is a crazy new track from Snoop Dogg ft. Kid Cudi called "That Tree". I was not expecting a collaboration between these two dudes but it definitely came out nice. I thought Cudi stole the show on the hook and his first verse but then Snoop came correct and and killed it on the next verse. To top it all off, Diplo produced the killer beat which makes it an even crazier collabo. Just dope shit all around! This one definitely deserves to be put on heavy rotation.

"That Tree" is from the More Malice: Deluxe Album & Movie which is dropping on March 23rd.
This is a re-release of the Malice N Wonderland album which will include 7 brand new tracks and a movie. I was a dumbass and downloaded the CLEAN version of Malice N Wonderland the first time around so I will definitely be copping this.

If you still haven't bought Wale's Attention Deficit you should make that happen ASAP. It's still one of the best Hip Hop albums of the past year and it's one of those albums that gets better with every listen. My favorite track currently just happens to be the latest single from the album:

"Pretty Girls" is a dope track that uses influences from the D.C. Go-Go Sound. Weensey from the legendary Go-Go band Backyard Band sings the infectious hook and absolutely crushes it. The song also samples Backyard Band's go-go rendition of The Moments and The Whatnauts track “Girls.”

The video for "Pretty Girls" is simple but it gets the job done. I like how they had a diverse range of chicks from big to small, dark to light and everywhere in between. This is definitely one of my favorite cuts off the album and you should expect to see it on Dj RyB Hip Hop Hits Volume 63.

"Oh My" is the dope new track from my favorite underrated rapper Redman. This is definitely some hot shit! It's been awhile since he had a hot single like this. This will get some serious play in my ride all the way through Spring and Summer. I can't get enough of it! For all of you crate diggin' cats, I'm pretty sure the song is sampling Average White Band's "Overture".

This is the first official single for his new album Reggie Noble 9 1/2 which is currently set to drop on March 9, 2010. It's been a few years since we've had some new Redman solo material so I'm definitely looking forward to this.

A lot of people might hate on Kevin Rudolf because of his poppy style but I've liked every song he's put out so far. "Let It Rock" and "Welcome To The World" might have been ridiculously played out by radio and they did sound way too similar but I still thought they were hot songs and they were both in my Top 5 Guilty Pleasures for 2008.

It didn't hurt that he had Lil Wayne featured on "Let It Rock" and Rick Ross on "Welcome To The World" either. That definitely helped give him a little more legitimacy and street cred in the Hip Hop community. Most rappers seem to be down with his style and Lil Wayne has been more interested in the Rock sound (and playing the guitar) since he started working with Rudolf. In case you didn't know, Rudolf is signed to Lil Wayne's label Cash Money Records so that helps explain why his production is always on point and how he can land almost any major Hip Hop star for a feature.

His new single "I Made It" is just starting to hit radio now and I think it's probably his best song to date. It's a little slower than his previous singles but the beat is just ridiculous and a perfect mixture of Rock and Hip Hop. I could definitely see some rappers jumping on the instrumental for their own freestyle version of the song. The hook is catchy as always and he landed another All-Star lineup (all Cash Money) of Lil Wayne, Baby and Jay Sean.

If you don't like this song, I think you've got problems. This shit is hot! Expect to be hearing this a lot in the next few weeks. I'm expecting this to blow up big.

It's about time we got something new from Big Boi! This dude disappears for years without even a guest appearance and then he reemerges out of nowhere with some new ish like he never left. I wish he would drop some new material on a more regular basis but I'll take what I can get at this point.

I wasn't a huge fan of "Shine Blockas" the first time I heard it but it's starting to grow on me. It's probably because I'm just happy to hear something new from one of the Outkast boys. What do you think? Is this hot or not?

Aw shit! Now that's what I'm talkin' bout! I was expecting the first time around on Snoop's "I Wanna Rock". I wouldn't change a thing on the original but I thought Snoop would have given a little more props to Rob Base in his lyrics since the whole song is based around the "It Takes Two" sample.

It's all good though since Jay and Snoop showed the original some love on the remix. I love how Jay opened up with a revised version of Rob Base's first line like:

It's possible you may have missed the release of Rakim's new album "The Seventh Seal" because it completely fell under the radar somehow. It quietly released a few weeks ago and the only reason why I knew it had dropped was because I happened to be in the new Hip Hop releases section in iTunes.

If you haven't heard or bought the album yet, I recommend that you do so immediately. It's by far one of the best Hip Hop albums of 2009 and it won't disappoint any true Rakim fan or Hip Hop head. Ra brings the heat as usual and makes you forget about the Dr. Dre debacle or the fact that he has made us all wait a full decade for a new album.

Every track is bumpin' and you won't want to fast forward any tracks in fear of missing that next quotable from one of the G.O.A.T.'s. It's one of those albums that you pop on for the first time and then immediately put it on repeat and listen to it all the way through again. It's that hot! This is a new track by Lil Wayne featuring Eminem called "Drop The World". It's a pretty hot track but I wasn't that impressed with Wayne's verse because he kind of mails it in but then Em came in and murdered him on his own shit! Em took this from a mediocre song to a banger in a matte of seconds. His verse reminded me of the nasty one he had in Drake's "Forever". He just destroys the track!

This is a really good sign for Eminem fans like myself that like his older, rapid fire flow that has been missing for years but is showing signs of a come back.. He sounds motivated and hungry again and has been crushing all of his guest appearances lately. I think he's finally got his swagger back. Good ish!

"This shit right here" is a hot new track from The Cool Kids called "Knocked Down". They're still coming with that unique Cool Kids sounds and style that first made them popular just a few short years ago. The beat is fairly simple but it still hits hard and has a funky ass bass line. They're not really rappin' about anything new but who gives a shit. If it sounds good and gets my head noddin' that's all I really care about these days.

You gotta love the special guest appearances of the Air Jordan XI's in the White and Black patent leather colorway and the throwback Charlotte Hornets hat from the 90's. DOPE!

By now, I'm sure you've heard the new Snoop track "I Wanna Rock" since it's been all over the radio for the past few weeks but just in case you live under a rock, here is the official video. If you are a Hip Hop fan and don't like this song, you've got some serious problems. It's straight FIRE!!!

I loved this track the second I heard it because of the Rob Base & DJ E Z Rock's "It Takes Two" sample. If you grew up in the 80's or just love old school Hip Hop, no other Intro will get you as fired up as:

I wasn't sold on DJ Kay Slay's new track "Blockstars" at first listen but now that I've heard a few more times on Sirius I have to admit it's growing on me. I think they could have done better on the hook had they replaced Ray J with someone that can actually sing but overall it's a decent track. The Drama King's new album More Than Just a DJ is set to drop in January 2010.

Wow! I never thought I would see such random ass collaboration as this one on Three 6 Mafia's new track "Feel It". Hip Hop and R&B producers have been experimenting with uptempo club joints for the past few years and the overall BPM of songs has continued to increase but this song is a straight up dance track. Three 6 Mafia has been experimenting with this faster sound recently on songs such as "Lolli Lolli (Pop That Body)" but I never expected to see them team up with an electronic Producer/DJ like Tiesto.

Most loyal Three 6 Mafia fans will probably hate this song but it is a good move on their part to help expand their audience. They also have a chance of increasing their record sales by tapping into a Tiesto's fan base which is huge overseas and probably doesn't normally buy or listen to Three 6 Mafia's music.

As a DJ, I like this track a lot because I can mix it in with almost any kind of uptempo track, regardless of genre. Once I got past the shock factor and gave it a good listen, I thought this was actually a really good song and it's catchy as hell. Expect this to get a lot of radio spins on mix shows in the next couple of months.

This is the official video for Papoose's new track "Paid a Grip". It's about time Papoose dropped some new heat! After being considered one of the hottest up and coming MC's and killing it in the mixtape game a few years back (almost 5 years ago?!?!), it seemed like he completely disappeared from the forefront of Hip Hop and lost all of the buzz he had built up from his 22 mixtapes since 2004.

I would have expected a legit full length album by now but hopefully he's been focusing on creating a quality product and that is why he has been under the radar. I'm sure we'll be hearing more dope ish from him very soon. I've been hearing his name a lot more and he's been making a few guest spots here and there. I haven't found any info on when his album might drop but it's safe to say it's probably around the corner if he's dropping videos like this one.

This is the official video for Juvenile's new single "Gotta Get It". I've been bumpin' this hard for the past month or so. It's definitely one of Juve's hottest tracks from the past couple of years. He has been releasing a lot of good music under the radar but this one should help him finally get some serious radio play once again.

This track has been floating around satellite radio for awhile now and I'm sure it's starting to get some play from local radio DJ's. This will definitely be making the cut for Dj RyB's Hip Hop Hits Volume 62...

This is the official video for the Clipse' "I'm Good" Remix featuring Rick Ross. This song keeps getting better with time and this remix if definitely on point. Rick Ross came correct and the brothers Clipse redid their verses with some serious hot shit.

Clipse is expected to drop a new mixtape in the next few weeks to get the streets ready for their new album Til the Casket Drops which drops on December 8th. There's also rumblings that they will be collaborating with Jadakiss on a new mixtape at some point in 2010. That should be RIDICULOUS!

"Psycho" is the new single/leaked track off of 50 Cent's much delayed album Before I Self Destruct which is currently slated to drop on November 17th. This is a pretty hot track but it's too much of the old 50/Eminem/Dre formula for me to get too excited about. There's nothing new or creative about it but at least it's some new music from one of my favorite Hip Hop trios. I'll take what I can get these days.

50 isn't bringing anything new to the table with his verses and I have to admit I was barely paying attention to his lyrics because I was just plain bored. Em woke me up a little bit though. He came with the old school quick hit flow just like he did on Drake's "Forever" which has to be one of his best verses in the past 5-7 years, hands down. I think Em is officially rejuvenated and back to his old ways which is what we've all been wanting for a long time. Let's hope it continues on the next album.
