Injuries mount as season progresses in Girls Basketball

The season is just a week old and the injuries have begun to mount across our Girls Basketball teams. Brooke Maines from Conner is suffering from a stress fracture in one foot. She may be returning soon. Over the weekend, Jenna Martin suffered a broken hand during the Cooper game. Coach Shawn West estimates it will be about 5 weeks beforer she sees action again. In last night's game, Lady Braves Jordan Allen went down with a knee in the game against Dixie Heights. She left the gym on crutches and ice. We hope it's nothing serious. Last night also, down at Trimble County, Gallatin County's Brooke Dossett took an elbow to the nose, breaking it. We wish all of our players to stay safe, but play hard. Get well soon to everyone.

The End of an Era in Ft. Thomas

I got a tweet yesterday and Rickard Skinner from NKY.com confirmed that Coach Dale Mueller from the Highlands Football team has hung up the cleats with 11 State Championships in 20 years as the head man in Ft. Thomas. Apparently, the news wasn't new. According to Skinner, "He had notified the principal last December that he was retiring from coaching after this season." The Bluebirds season ended with a State Runner-up trophy after Saturday's 37-34 loss against Collins at Western Kentucky University for the Class 4a State Championship. Mueller, who teaches physics and is also athletic director will continue in those capacities next year before retiring altogether. We wish Coach Mueller all the best.

The Countdown to 500 begins

This year, during the basketball season, Tri State Internet Sports will reach a huge milestone. That being our 500th broadcast. We have broadcast to date, 449 games and events through the 9 years since we started this week back in the 2005-06 season. When we get within 10 broadcasts, we're going to have the 10 best calls in our history. Games from the old days to current will be featured. We are very excited for this milestone. Given our schedule, we're looking at either District Tournament Week or the 9th Region Tournament to reach the 500 plateau. The Countdown to 500 has begun.

NCKCSports.com to be taken over by Gallatin County Students

The NCKCSports.com website will soon be taken over by the students of one of the Conference Schools, that being Gallatin County. Kelsey Williams is the technology teacher at Gallatin County and her web design class will be taking over the running and maintaining of the Conference site. Her students will be adding additional content for other sports that were not initially captured. We welcome the assistance and thank Kelsey and her students for taking over the site.

Girls All "A" Classic goes to State next

The All "A" Classic Girls Tournament's next stop is Frankfort. Congratulations to the 8th Region Champions, the Gallatin County Lady Wildcats, 9th Region Champions, the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds and the 10th Region Champions, the Bishop Brossart Lady Mustangs.

First round games will start on Wednesday January 23rd. Bishop Brossart will play the earliest game @ 10:00am against the winner of the 1st Region. Newport Central Catholic will face Pineville in first round action @ 1:00pm. Gallatin County will take on the winner of the 12th region at 6:30pm.

The way the bracket is set, we could see a Brossart/NCC Semifinal matchup on Saturday @ 10:00am.

Congratulations to all of our girls teams. Best of luck in Frankfort.

Girls Basketball - Trimble County @ Conner

Our first Girls Basketball broadcast tonight saw a Trimble County squad returning all of it's players from last year take on a Conner Cougar team that lost 4 seniors to graduation, but you really couldn't tell as the Conner Lady Cougars (3-0) defeated the Trimble County Lady Raiders (1-2) on Saturday night @ Conner.

The first quarter really started to tell the story in this one as Conner jumped out to an early 20-4 lead paced by Kentucky Wesylyn signee Jordan Scott and Thomas More College signee Emily Pluto who both had 8 points in the first quarter. Conner did a great job of isolating Trimble County's Chloe Griffith who came into the game averaging 16 points since the start of the season. The Lady Cougars held Griffith to just 2 points in the first half.

The second quarter was a bit more of the same as Conner took a 13-8 advantage in the second quarter and a 33-12 halftime lead into the locker room. Freshman Hunter Hendricks led the Cougars in scoring in the quarter with 4 points. Trimble County had balanced scoring in the first half, unfortunately, held to 3 points or under for the first half for all 5 players.

The third quarter saw Conner pull away taking a 17-6 advantage in the quarter enroute to a 50-18 3rd quarter score. Hunter Hendricks and Jordan Scott led Conner with 5 points each.

The 4th quarter saw the Conner JV team come in and get some varsity time against the Lady Raiders. Paige Black led TC with 5 points in the quarter as she led the Lady Raiders in the game with 7 points. Kaylee Clifford also added 6 points. Both Paige and Kaylee hit three point shots in the 4th quarter, the only 2 shots that fell from behind the arc for Trimble County. Stephanie McMillen led the scoring in the 4th quarter with 4 points for Conner. The Lady Cougars were paced by Jordan Scott with 15 points. Hunter Hendricks added 12.

Conner will host the Scott Lady Eagles on Monday while Trimble County hosts Switzerland County, IN on Thursday the 6th.

Coach Matt Reinhart from Brossart Football Resigns

I received a call from Coach Matt Reinhart from Bishop Brossart today. He wanted to let me know that this past Friday he resigned as the Varsity Football Head Coach of the Mustangs. He told me that this came about due to irreconciliable differences with the administration at Bishop Brossart High School. In the meeting on Friday, he was told that the program needed to go in a different direction.

He wanted to give special thanks to Athletic Director Mel Webster and former principal Tom Seither for the opportunity to get the program going. I asked him about the players coming up from the lower grades. He indicated "There is a very young nucleus of players up and coming and that the program will be fine as it moves forward. There should be no reason for success in the program. The underclassmen had progressed very well."

I asked about the feeder system for the program. Coach Reinhart said "The feeder programs in the earlier grades have done well, but numbers had dimished. They need to make the connection with the NKYFL teams in order to boost numbers."

Coach Reinhart has no plans at this point. Leaving options open for Coaching again, not opposed to an assistant position, but for now, just taking things slow.

We wish Coach Reinhart the best in whatever he decides to do.

Jordan Mastin Continues Bowling Career @ NKU
