Tri State Internet Sports Radio To Broadcast Baseball Post-Season

It was announced this week that Tri State Internet Sports Radio will be broadcasting two Distirct Championships as well as the entire 9th Region Tournament this year for baseball.

This will be the second year that TSISR will have broadcast the 9th Region Tournament. Matt Buttelwerth & Matt Steinmann will call the games. The 9th Region Tournament games will also be videocast live from Florence Freedom Stadium in Florence.

We will have the full broadcast schedule up as soon as the district tournaments are listed.

Ron Dawn elected to KHSAA Board of Control

Ron Dawn has been elected to a four-year term on the KHSAA Board of Control, starting with the 2012-13 school year in July.

Dawn is a current sitting board member who was appointed to fill the term of Bob Schneider, who retired at the
conclusion of the 2010-2011 school year. Dawn will serve as the private school representative for regions 9-16.

The KHSAA Board of Control is comprised of 18 members, 14 who are elected and four who are appointed by the Kentucky Department of Education. Of the 14 elected members, eight board members are elected to represent specific geographic regions. Two female members, two private school members and two African-American members represent the entire state – one for regions 1-9 and the other for regions 9-16.

Each representative serves a four-year term with a limit of two consecutive four-year terms.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the KHSAA Board of Control is Monday, April 16, at the KHSAA Office in Lexington.

2012 Football Playoff Dates Announced

The Board also approved the dates for each of the six championship contests in the 2012 Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl.

On Friday, November 30, the championships for Classes 1A, 3A and 4A will take place. Classes 2A, 5A and 6A will determine its champions on Saturday, December 1. All games will take place at Houchens-L.T. Smith Stadium on the campus of Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green.

Running Clock in Basketball To Start in 2012-13

In accordance with NFHS playing rules basketball contests at all levels in grades 9-12 will feature a running clock beginning next season once the margin reaches 35 points in the second half. NFHS rules give states flexibility with regard to mercy rules and this change is similar to provisions in football, baseball and softball that terminate contests when the winning team, for all practical purposes, has been determined.

At the point the margin reaches 35, the clock will stop only for charged time outs, an injury/blood or
disqualification, and free throw attempts.

“This change helps ensure that the proper level of sportsmanship is emphasized, without having an impact on
winning and losing,” said Tackett. “There are countless stories detailed about “out of hand” contests and the
negative impact on school and working relationships.”

Once the official signals for the timer to stop the clock, it will start on the last missed free throw or once the ball is touched inbounds.

Soccer Post-Season to Change in 2012

Kentucky’s soccer postseason will have a different look beginning with the 2012 season, thanks to changes

approved by the KHSAA Board of Control at its regular meeting on Monday.

The state tournament will expand to eight teams for both boys’ and girls’, while the sectional and sub-sectional
rounds will be replaced with a semi-state round. The Board previously approved a measure that creates a 16 region soccer alignment. Winners of each of the 16 regions will advance to a one game semi-state round, which is comprised of semi-state 1 (regions 1-4), semi-state 2 (regions 5-8), semi-state 3 (regions 9-12) and semi-state 4 (12-16). The semi-state pairings will be determined on a six-year rotation. Pairings for the eight teams reaching the state tournament will be determined by a blind draw.

“This is something our soccer coaches and advisory committee had explored for several years – finding a way to
make this happen,” said KHSAA Assistant Commissioner and soccer contact Michael Barren, “We are pleased with the solution the Board has approved and we will give it a chance to allow soccer to grow.”

The expansion of the state soccer tournament is important on multiple fronts, according to KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett.

“Not only does this give more kids the chance to experience a championship atmosphere, but I think it will really
help grow the sport on a statewide level. The Board already took a giant step in that direction with their previous
alignment approval but with a rotation of opponents at the semi-state level and the blind draw at the state
tournament, it will give new areas an opportunity to experience success on a statewide level and build their own
traditions.”

KHSAA Scholarships Awarded

Every year, the KHSAA gives out scholarships at their annual banquet.

The winners, one boy and one girl from each of the state’s 16 regions, will be honored at a banquet,

scheduled for Sunday, April 29, at the KHSAA Office in Lexington. Each winner receives a $200 book
scholarship from the folks at Forcht Bank and Kentucky National Insurance, and a recognition award, courtesy
of the Officials Division. One boy and one girl, selected as the statewide winner, will receive a one-time
$3,000 scholarship, courtesy of Forcht Bank and Kentucky National Insurance.

Selection criteria for the awards include grade point average, letters of recommendation, leadership
roles/honors, response to a case study essay and verification of no game disqualifications.

The following individuals were recognized as regional winners from our area:

Region 8 – Christian Olsson (Shelby County), Katelyn Temple (Trimble County)
Region 9 – Zane McQueary (Boone County), Meredith Brownell (Ryle)

Logan Stevens to Swim @ Va. Tech.

(TAYLOR MILL, KY) – Scott High Senior Logan Stevens will sign the agreement to commit to dive with the Virginia Tech University dive team beginning in the fall 2012 season at a signing ceremony to be held at Scott High School’s Natatorium on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 2:45 p.m. Stevens began diving as a member of the Scott High School Varsity Swimming and Diving Team as a sixth grader in 2005. Coached by Allyson Heger, Logan has been a state qualifier since 2007 and was the 2012 Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) State Runner-up in diving. Stevens holds the Scott High School record high score for both a 6 dive and 11 dive meet and he holds the all-time pool record at Scott for a 6 dive meet. “In 16 years of coaching, Logan has been one of the most impressive divers I have ever coached”, said Allyson Heger, Kenton County Dive Coach. “He has tremendous character. I’m not sure I’ve known anyone with more passion and dedication for his sport and I have watched him grow into a real leader and role model for others,” she said.

Stevens has had numerous accomplishments during his diving career, including winning the Scott Classic Invitational Diving Championship and NKAC Diving Championship. He has been a member of the Redhawk Elite Diving Academy at Miami University since 2008 under the coaching of Michael Grapner and K.R. Li. As a member of Redhawk Elite, Logan has competed in USA Diving Meets on 1 meter, 3 meter and platform diving competitions. During this period, he competed in 36 events in regional, zone and national meets, placing among the top five finishers 13 times, including 4 first place finishes. In 2009, Logan placed 3rd at the AAU National Diving Championships. He is a four-time diving champion of the Northern Kentucky Swim League.

Located in Blacksburg, Virginia, Virginia Tech is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. In 2012, VTU’s diving team captured first place in the ACC Swimming and Diving Championships and later qualified 5 divers in the NCAA Championships. The head coach of the VTU Diving Team is Ron Piemonte.

Campbell County Camels Signings this week

Baseball Coverage - Game 1 - Boone County @ Dixie Heights

Our intern, Taylor Davis is going to a bunch of baseball games this spring and interviewing the coaches as well as doing a game summary for us that we will post here. Here is his first story:

On Monday, I stopped by for a visit in Edgewood, at Dixie Heights High School to catch up with two of the top notch baseball coaches in Norther Kentucky, Coach Wayne Huff of Boone, and Coach Chris Maxwell of Dixie. What was predicted to be a "shootout" between two big school programs, ended up being a "shutout" for the Rebels, taking the victory with a score of 5-0.

Here's what Coach Wayne Huff of Boone had to say before the game:

Q- Coach Huff, are you pleased with your season so far?

A- To this point I think I am, record wise we're doing well, which is very surprising because I didn't think we would be sitting this good at this point. The way were playing I think, you have to put a game together where we've played good offense, good defense, and good pitching. We've been winning games, either by hitting one game or pitching the next, or by defense but still waiting for us to put a complete game together.

Q- What do you and your team need to do to go deep into the season?

A- Defensively, we need to defend from each position on the field, improve our base running and just simple fundamentals.

Q- Who is your most dependable defender this year?

A- Our four seniors in the field being, Doug Teegarden, Kameron Schwartz, Chase Stanley, and Kyle church. They are all very reliable.

Q- We all know, meaning everyone in the Northern Kentucky sports community, about the talent of Doug Teegarden. Coach, what does Doug bring to the table for this ball club?

A- Doug is a great leader! He's sort of like our quarterback of the team calling out defenses, the bunt coverage and stuff like that, he keeps everybody calm under big pressure and remains poised. That's what we expect out of him after being here and making an impact for the past four years and he knows how we want things done here and what our expectations are.

Here's what Coach Chris Maxwell of Dixie had to say before the game:

Q- Coach, Maxwell has your season met your expectations at this point?

A- Yeah, we've got off to a nice start. Lost some close games, 2-1, and lost to a team out of Toledo in a game where we had to play some kids that hadn't got any playing time yet so I'm pretty happy with that.

Q- What do you need to improve on to make a deep run late in the season?

A- Get everybody healthy! That's the biggest thing. If we can get our arms back, we have a decent pitching crew, so I think were going to be okay.

Q- Who is your most dependable defender?

A- Well, our best player, our short stop, Cody York, has a sore shoulder right now.

Q- When he's healthy, what makes him your best player?

A- His quick release, his ability to hit the ball into holes, and his very strong arm.
