Today we started the lengthy process of repackaging and sending the Travelling Light works back to their eagerly awaiting creators. We hope they get home by the end of the week (international entries will take a little longer of course) and in good condition! Feeling a bit sad sending it all back, we hope the art has enjoyed its journey, it's been a brilliant experience for us and we look forward to the next Venice Biennale, 2011...

Sat 13th - Mon 22nd June: Swine of a 'flu

We apologise for the delay in returning work to the Travelling Light artists as both Chiara and Debra have been laid up all week with a swine of a 'flu. Debra was slightly concerned that her visit to the Mexican pavilion may have been responsible for her condition, Chiara decided she was invincible, but alas has also been struck with the beastly plague. After a week in quarantine in Chav-on-Sea, East Sussex, the two have been making a Victorian seaside recovery. Please refrain from painting red crosses on the gallery door as we are no longer contagious. All work will be posted this week. We thank you for your patience.

Thursday 11th June: Going Home

For many members of the team, Travelling Light gave them their first ever visit to Venice and so, on Thursday afternoon, it was with mixed emotions that we made our way back to the airport...sad to be leaving, happy about the success of show, exhilarated by a week filled with new encounters and opportunities and most of all, exhausted...
At Marco Polo, we arrived to find our flight delayed by 3 hours, and so we amused ourselves with backgammon and food, eventually getting back to Hackney at 2am...Travelling Light never felt so heavy!

Wednesday 10 June: The End is Nigh

Above: after carefully packing away Travelling Light, getting the palazzo's pictures and furniture back into place caused anxiety and OCD for some members of the team as we awaited the agency's inspection.

The show came to a premature end, hours before schedule, because an off-duty policeman who knew the owner of the palazzo, wandered in...we were informed that what we were doing was illegal and that the show must come down immediately or else we would face a heavy fine.

Although the exhibition was an official collateral event listed by the British Council on the Biennale Art map (http://www.ar tupdate.com/), the venue itself hadn't been registered by the owner for use as a public space...we must have forgotten to mention it...

Back on March 27th, we met Daniel Birnbaum at the Biennale press conference in London and when we asked him the secret to becoming a curator of the Venice Biennale, he told us, "just have lots of parties, with art".

So, in the end, Daniel saved the day as we able to quote him on the police statement, declaring: "we held a party with art", therefore, not breaking any laws, pacifying the authorities and retaining some of our original guerilla integrity.

Sunday 7th June: The Party

Our party was a great success with lots of surprise visitors, including many of the Travelling Light artists. Using the bookcase/mezzanine as their stage, we were treated to a set by musician Alberto Grollo, accompanied by two violinists and spoon player! The music gave us pause to reflect on what we'd achieved and proved a bit too much for some team members...the party ran on long after 9pm, with Debra giving an impromptu midnight tour of the show to a passing group of German collectors!

Saturday 6 June: Travelling Light Opens

Today the show opened, the curators gave a talk to assembled guests and press, about how the whole project came to be. It is very exciting to finally be open and part of the Venice Biennale! A steady stream of visitors started at 10am sharp and we look forward to the main party tomorrow...

Explorations into the Known World, Venice 5 - 7 June 2009

On Saturday 6 June at 2pm, Elizabeth Sheridan and her team paddled up to the Travelling Light venue in her customised sea kayak. A collaboration between artists Liz Sheridan and Cedric Christie, the kayak is emblazoned with names of famous explorers disguised as corporate logos. Sheridan travelled the canals of Venice to coincide with the opening events of the Biennale on the weekend 5 - 7 June 2009. Liz and her art kayak will go on to explore overlooked margins of the European continent.

Weds, Thurs, Fri: Venice Biennale Opening Parties

The day after we arrived, as if there wasn't enough to do, we had to make ourselves look gorgeous for numerous opening parties. Our days consisted of breakfast, bit of hanging, party, lunch, more hanging, partying, even more hanging, dinner, partying, then bed...poor us. Highlights have included lunch at the British Pavilion hosted by Andrea Rose and meeting John Cale, Steve McQueen, Susan MacWilliam and many other international artists...before getting back to do a bit more tweaking to Travelling Light. There are so many parties happening simultaneously, in so many pavilions, factories and islands across the lagoon, that in order to get a taste of it all, the team decided to divide and conquer...

The Hang

We installed the London show quite carefully and in Venice hoped to recreate it as faithfully as possible by retaining the same groupings of work, set around common domestic features. Obviously the rented venue is not a neutral, white, gallery space, so we had quite a challenge.

Adapting quickly to the space with minimum fuss and funding was central to the Travelling Light 'wash & go' remit, so while we had to move a lot of furniture and pictures, many things had to stay put: the immovable, black, ornate piano; huge, dark, wooden bookcases; enormous desk and gigantic sofas. These were all considerable competition to the art works themselves. We also had to make use of the existing wall fixings and use as much white tac as possible. It was at this point that we realised how mental we were to take all this on!

Overall though, many aspects worked out well: the marble mantle piece mirrored the WW Gallery hang, the 8 metre tall book shelf was an effective backdrop for the paper sculptures and the large windows overlooking the fragrant back garden provided the perfect frame for Eleanor Moulsdale's evocative performance piece.

The Venue

Since we hadn't visited the palazzo prior to our arrival (our budget meant we couldn't afford a recce) we were a little apprehensive about the suitability of the venue. Our research satisfied us that the size and location of the apartment should be perfect, but there were also lots of unknowns. So, when we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful location (a stone's throw from Accademia, Guggenheim, Zattere), the grand entrance and the scale of the exhibition space...all that remained was to hang the show.

Wednesday 5th June: Wine, cheese and water

Getting large quantities of wine for a private view in Venice takes a little more organisation than filling your car boot at the local supermarket. Luckily we had help. On Wednesday morning the four of us got to Piazzale Roma for 7.30am to pick up 72 bottles of wine and 5 kilos of Grana Padano cheese from our sponsors Agrigelateria sull'aia (http://www.cortefenilazzo.it/)

We were met by Maria and Edoardo, who had come all the way from their Dairy Ice Cream Farm on the shores of Lake Garda to deliver to us. As well as cheese and wine from their own vineyard, the Agrigelateria is best known for its delicious, award-winning ice cream for which people travel far and wide.

With our suitcases and bags bursting with produce, we headed back to the venue on a vaporetto and then made our way over bridges and canals with a borrowed trolley.

Tuesday 2nd June: Arriving in Venice

After safely muling the work through British security, Chiara, Debra, Sophie and Lisa flew into Marco Polo and got the boat to Venice. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon and the team set about preparing the exhibition venue. The rest of the team: Eva, Steph, Ellie and Lucy, arrived on Thursday 4th June...

Domestic Mishaps and Thieving Fingers

Considering the vast numbers who attended, there was relatively little trashing of the space on Friday night, so thank you all for being careful around such delicate works! But, apart from burning rubber, there are a couple more incidents we forgot to mention:

1) Two Venice Viagra Bars were 'removed' from the exhibition, we have scanned the photos for bulging pants in an attempt to identify the culprit(s), but no luck...In all seriousness, this was pretty low, the artist David Rusbatch now has to make the work again for Venice, unless the bars are returned to WW - you know who you are, so please drop them through the letterbox, no questions asked.

2) On Saturday morning, the cleaner did an excellent, thorough and careful job of returning the gallery to pre-pv, pristeen status. So thorough, that she inadvertently removed part of Kate Davis' work 'Still Waiting After All These Years 1'. Thinking a careless visitor had left their cigarette to burn out on someone's work, and, with the sensitivity of an art restorer, she meticulously removed the butt and every trace of ash without disturbing the perfect pool of red nail varnish or the half lemons... so, some conceptual decisions were made, or she would have removed the lot! The mortified cleaner has been reassured that she is in good company...as Damien Hirst, Joseph Beuys and Gustav Metzger have all had similar domestic scrapes. Kate's work is now happily reinstated for your viewing pleasure!

The MOTHER of all pvs

We are both overwhelmed and exhausted by the fantastic response to Travelling Light. Floods of positive messages have been pouring in. Too bad we're too knackered to read them. The first leg is still partying on a bit, we've had visitors every day since last Thursday and can't get rid of them...in the nicest possible way. The opening party was brilliant, featuring music by Olivia Chaney, whose voice is a beautiful instrument in itself and was perfect for TL (if you missed it, here's a sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yejYBW1l8AI)

Proceedings were only slighty marred by our psycho neighbour who decided to burn rubber (literally) in his back garden to get rid of our guests, as it was too noisy for him at 8.15 on a Friday night! Thank God for British weather. It pissed on his protest and we were able to enjoy ourselves without it dampening any spirits.

So far we have had press in The Independent, This is London, Notion Magazine and Hackney Citizen as well as numerous art blogs and comments online. Thanks to all the artists and everybody who came on Friday for making it one of the most memorable evenings ever!

Despite finally getting a number for 'Boris', we keep getting the blond bombshell's answerphone.

The telephone number in question could well be a hoax. We had several leads and spoken to numerous officials who have had us banging our heads with frustration. Some people think that we are a bunch of stupid girls who can be palmed off with any old shizzer. Although we enjoy chasing wild geese for exercise, we only eat red herring on Fridays and the view from up our garden path looks out to the splendour of the road to nowhere.

Time is running out and drastic action on our part may be required on Thursday May 14th around high noon.

No Art Please, We're British!

For those of you who have been following us, you'll know that we've been desperately trying to get through bureaucratic red tape to gain permission for an integral part of the London leg of Travelling Light. One of the Travelling Light submissions consists of a public art intervention, and it forms a central part of the artist's practice and research. A visionary and beautifully simple work, planned to take place in parallel in London and Venice. We can't divulge details of who, what or when, but suffice to say we are still in a bit of a headlock with various gov. officials who seem to lack vision and imagination. Ridiculous when you consider that important cities as diverse and widespread as Rome, Paris, Adelaide, Cairo, Edinburgh and Oxford, have all already given permission. The bishop of another Italian city (who recently gave the go ahead for the same happening in July 2009) even declared "The church should not interfere with art and artists."

And yet...London...this great city, home to perhaps the largest concentration of art and artists in the world, seems unwilling to support and promote its emerging artists and arts organisations for fear that the work may spark guerilla, copycat events or result in an increase in similar requests bombarding an already busy council office. While we understand all the security, health & safety, conservation and heritage issues around our planned event AND have everything in place to satisfy the authorities - all at no financial cost to them, whatsoever - we are still being fobbed off again and again with new excuses...

We shall not be moved!

The Selection

The high quality and sheer number of works submitted made the selection process very difficult, but after many hours of careful deliberation the TL team have made their final selection. We are very excited to announce that the exhibition will showcase a total of 58 artists including: Roma Tearne, Kate Davis, Maria Chevska, Jarik Jongman, Oona Grimes, Sardine & Tobleroni, Boa Swindler, Lucy May and Eva Lis. Submissions have arrived from all over the globe, which is appropriate not only because the theme of this year's Venice Biennale is, ‘Making Worlds', but because the ethos of community-grounded Pharos and WW Gallery is inclusiveness.

Artists from around the world were invited to submit work for Travelling Light, in any media and any size provided it arrived by post in a standard large letter envelope or box and met with the given criteria. There was no set theme, except the restrictions themselves and artists were encouraged to be as inventive, innovative and lateral-thinking as possible and to enjoy the challenge of seeing what could fit into and come out of an envelope.

Soon packages started to arrive from all over the world!

OLIVIA CHANEY: LONDON

The TL team are thrilled to announce that Italian born Olivia Chaney will perform a very special acoustic set at WW Gallery for the opening of the Travelling Light exhibition in London.

And where is this beautiful lady from?

Born in Florence, Olivia did most of her growing up in Oxford, and at age of 14 left home for specialist music school in Manchester where she took up a joint-first scholarship in classical piano and singing. Aged 18, another scholarship took her to the Royal Academy of Music in London where she became the only vocalist (and female virtually) on the jazz course where she developed the art of improvisation and performance in a freer context, studied composition, and learnt and collaborated with wonderful musicians.

Since graduating Olivia has danced and sung a lead role in the specially-commissioned abstract ballet 'Shore' (Cathy Marston/Dave Maric), which was performed in the sand-dunes beneath Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland, strummed baroque guitar and sung as ‘Cupid’ in ‘Timon of Athens’ last season at Shakespeare’s Globe (Django Bates/Lucy Bailey), mimed synth-strings on X-factor, and lots more.

Olivia has recently taught herself the guitar and Indian harmonium for her own solo project, which increasingly reverts back to her roots in lyricism and in songwriters with stories to tell. Whether the songs she interprets are ancient, modern, traditional, her own, or from the innovative renaissance courts, Olivia twists them into her own unusual, potent and emotive sound world.

The TL team first heard the wonderful Alberto Grollo whilst being spoiled by the Ambassador at the Italian Culture Institute in London. We were so distracted from talking about art by his beautiful sounds that we asked him immediately to provide the same relief at our opening in Venice!

Alberto is a master of all trades, from blues to country, rock to classic, he has recorded 18 albums to date. Alberto has supported The Byrds and James Taylor during their Italian tours, joining them on stage for many performances, and has toured solo in Italy, Germany, France, Austria, and USA. He also composes soundtracks for documentaries, movies and Italian TV programs.

The 2009 Venice Biennale: What's it about?

'Making Worlds' at the 2009 Venice Biennale.

The 2009 Venice Biennale is entitled 'Making Worlds' and will be presented in the renewed Palazzo delle Esposizioni in the Giardini and in the Arsenale. It is a single, large exhibition that articulates different themes woven into one whole. Considering collectives, it comprises works by over 90 artists from all over the world and includes many new works and on-site commisions in all disciplines.

Daniel Birnbaum with Yoko Ono

This year the Biennale is directed by the enormously charismatic international curator of institutions and exhibitions Daniel Birnbaum. Daniel has been Rector of the Staedlschule in Frankfurt am Main in Germany since 2001, and has recently been a contibuting editor of 'ArtForum' in New York. He has also contributed regularly to other magazines such as "Parkett" and "Frieze". He has written numerous publications and has produced essays for catalogues throughout the world.

Excerpt from Press Release for 'Making Worlds' by Daniel Birnbaum:

'The title of the exhibition, Making Worlds expresses my wish to emphaize the process of creation. A work of art is more than an object, more than a commodity. It represents a vision of the world, and if taken seriously must be seen as a way of making a world. The strength of the vision is not dependent on the kind or complexity of the tools brought into play. Hence all forms of artistic expression are present: installation art, video and film, sculpture, performance, painting, drawing and a parade. Taking 'worldmaking' as a starting point, also allows the exhibition to highlight the fundemental importance of certain key artists for the creativity of successive generations, just as much as exploring new spaces for art to unfold outside of the institutional context and beyond the expectations of the art market. Making Worlds is an exhibition driven by the aspiration to explore worlds around us as well as worlds ahead. It is about possible new beginnings - this is what I would like to share with the visitors of the Biennale. "

UK at the 53rd Venice Biennale 2009

For each Biennale International Art Festival The British Council commissions artists for the British Pavilion to celebrate the best emerging and established UK talent. Artists have included Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Bridget Riley, Anish Kapoor, Mark Wallinger, Rachel Whiteread, Gilbert & George, and most recently Tracey Emin in 2007.

Great Britain : Steve McQueen

Steve McQueen has been one of the most prominent art figures of 2008/09. Queen and Country, the work McQueen created following his commission by the Imperial War Museum as war artist in Iraq in 2003, was aquired for the nation by The Art Fund was was seen in venues in London, Liverpool and Edinburgh during 2008 as part of a national tour. McQueens feature film Hunger, commisioned by Channel4/Film 4 was released in 2008 and has won an incredible 23 major international film awards.

The details of Steve McQueen's exhibition at the Venice Biennale will remain under wraps until the launch in June!

Wales: John Cale

John Cale is a Welsh musician, composer, singer-songwriter and record producer who was a founding member of the rock & roll band The Velvet Underground. Cale will be presenting a new, specially commissioned audio-visual intallation from Wales. Known for his exploration of the phsiognomy of sound, Cale undertook a series of cathartic physical performances in Wales to create work that draws upon his lifelong concerns with the passing of time, the durational and the multidisciplinary nature of presentation.

Scotland : Martin Boyce

Glasgow-based Martin Boyce's work realtes to and transforms the space around it creating sculptural art inspired by modernist design history. Boyce will represent the fourth Scottish presentation at Venice with No Reflections which will build on the critical success of previous projects.

Northern Ireland : Susan MacWilliam

Susan MacWilliam has spent over ten years exploring cases of paranormal activity. The subject of her work is the psychic and the supernatural, as well the field of psychical research. She uses video, photography and sculptural installation to investigate personal and social histories in a way that mediates between worlds of art and psycichal research.

MacWilliam's exhibition for the Venice Biennale will include a major new work, Falmmarion and two other video works Eileen (2008) and Dermo Optics (2006).

Chiara Williams

Artist Chiara Williams is one half of WW Gallery. Director, curator, organisational genius and general geek, Williams adds glamour and energy to everything she’s involved in. Half Venetian and half Londoner, it was always her ambition to exhibit at the Venice Biennale. Williams grew up between family in Venice, London and Moscow and worked in various galleries and museums, including the Biennale itself. Whilst working in education, Williams’ imagination was dulled and so she returned to her earlier desires, eventually setting up WW Gallery with Wilson. Williams’ theoretical background is in art history and film, she studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art and has a slow wit.

Debra Wilson

Artist Debra Wilson is the other half of WW Gallery. Director, curator, technician and all round creative genius, Wilson was born in the port of Plymouth, her father was in the Navy and she spent her whole childhood on the move. At 16 she left home and continued to travel, living and working in Sydney, Zurich and for five years in New York where she was involved in guerrilla-based art happenings. After settling in Hackney and feeling stuck working in education, she began to plan her great escape and decided to finally kick her own ass into setting up a project space with like-minded souls. Wilson’s theoretical background is in art and psychology, she studied at CSM, LCC and UEL and is funny as fook.

Sophie Wilson

The self-styled ‘curatrix’ of Pharos Gallery, Wilson was born and raised in Liverpool. Growing up against a backdrop of the Mersey Beat poets, a riotous music scene and the Liverpool Tate, she was inspired from an early age to work with creative people and the arts . Wilson studied English literature and drama in Sheffield, where she specialized in psychoanalytic theory and made short films. She then travelled down under to get an MA in Curatorship. It was here she gained her experience of the commercial art world in the galleries and auction houses of Sydney, meanwhile forging links with the stars of the Indigenous art community. Back in London, after a period of working in art logistics, Wilson decided to throw caution to the wind and set up her own collective. A handshake, a Hackney horizon and a menthol cigarette later, Pharos was born. Wilson continues to use her business brains in the context of international radio and TV broadcasting, whilst aiming to deconstruct the west end art system from a bunker in E8.

Lisa Farrell

Lisa Farrell is the love child of WW Gallery. A documentary photographer, trainee curator and all round and east London arts groupie, she gained honorary membership at the local Supine Studios where she bumped into Debra Wilson and Chiara Williams. Starting out as nervous intern, she soon progressed to ‘visual communications’ and is now unable to tear herself away from their creative genius and all round hilarity. Lisa will be heading to Central Saint Martins in September 09 to study fine art curation.

Eva Lis

Eva Lis is a Polish born artist living in Hackney, East London. Working across a number of disciplines, including print-making, painting, sculpture and site-specific installation, she prefers to work within a “public dynamic” taking more confrontational approach to social issues. Her past projects include 'The Universe Project' multimedia art project commissioned by the Grimm film production in Oslo; 'Parade of the Denizens' a horse drawn art exhibition in collaboration with Ed Pien; 'Visions of Excess' exploitation video project in collaboration with Paul Redfearn; SEK-Kulturverein-Art Studios, Berlin, ongoing collective multimedia art project. She is currently studying for MA Fine Art at the UCL Slade.

Lucy May

Lucy was born in Malaysia in 1982. She graduated from the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in 2005. May is currently studying for MA Sculpture at the Royal College of Art and is based in a studio space in East London.

Stephanie Wehowski

Stephanie completed a Media Arts Foundation at the University of Arts London in 2000 and went on to study Fine Arts at Westminster University. She was born in the trading city of Luebeck, Germany, and she arrived in London in 1996 where she still resides and works.Stephanie works mainly in the medium of large scale sculpture and installation, which have in the past occupied parks and abandoned buildings. The installations themselves often include video or sound and focus on creating an atmosphere to which allows viewers to dive into introspection. Stephanie is interested in touching a world outside the realm of the intellect and words, but which is nonetheless graspable.
