Frequent hand-washing.

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face.

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt) (adults only). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at using a Neti pot, but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton swabs dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C. *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

7. Take Vitamin C with Zinc, B Complex and Vitamin D when you travel before and after flights for a few days.

Our thanks to Michell Moore for this contribution

**********
Blog URL http://tlc-network-club.blogspot.com/

Use the G R O W Model to organize Yourself

Use the G R O W Model to organize Yourself

I do not actually set New Years resolutions. I believe in continuous goal-setting as opposed to creating a `wish-list' on December 31st.

However this year I was happy to discuss the coaching model that I use for goal identification and planning for my clients. It is called the G.R.O.W. model.

This is not just mine. Many coaches use it, or some variant of it. Here is what I use this acronym for and what I explained on CBC Newsworld national TV a couple days ago. I hope you enjoy it and find it useful for self-coaching and also for helping others around you take the next steps on the path to more success.

G – Goals.
What are your new goals and how do they mesh with your current goals already in place? This is where you establish your vision of where you want to be in life. Are those goals SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-based) or as I mentioned in last year's interview, are they BEST (believable, enthusiastic, specific and time-limited)?

R – Reality.
What is your current reality? What is your environment like at work and at home? Where are you now, at the starting point, and why do you want or need to achieve these identified goals?

O – Opportunities.
Some people use this letter for `obstacles', but I prefer the more positive word `opportunities' . What have you tried before that helped or hurt your goal achievement? What opportunities can you take advantage of now, around you, to achieve your goals? Are there courses, books, workshops, seminars, coaches or mentors? Will work subsidize professional development training for you? If you do not ask you will not know what their policy or budget is.

W – Willingness.
Again some other coaches use this letter to refer to the `wrap-up' stage, which is fine, but I prefer to be a little more specific and call it `willingness' . This is the very important stage of figuring out your current motivation for each of your goals. Write them down, from all different areas (financial, health, professional, communicative, etc.) and then assign a number to each one, based on your motivation to achieve it, on a scale of 1-10. Anything less than a 7 will be difficult to achieve at this point. Use your momentum and focus on the top 2 or 3 goals that have an 8 or above answer.

With your new priority list organize an action plan and get to work!

P.S. – There is a giveaway Ebooklet called "How to Achieve Goals" that you can check out here to get advice and understanding on goals: http://stores. lulu.com/ commcoach1 .

Author: Ric Phillips

>
Toronto ESL English Tutors and Coaches

Ric Phillips - Communication Coach

Ross McBride - Business and Professional ESL English Tutor

June 10, 2009 H1N1 Flu Updates for Travel

About the H1N1 Flu Virus (Human Swine Flu)

The H1N1 flu virus is caused by a new strain of the influenza A H1N1 virus. It is a new flu virus of swine origin that has never been previously detected in either human or swine. This new virus is being detected among humans and is currently being spread from person-to-person.

H1N1 Flu Virus Symptoms
Usually includes symptoms similar to seasonal influenza (flu) including headache, chills, cough followed by fever, loss of appetite, muscle aches and fatigue, runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes and throat irritation. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may occur in adults as well as in children. In more severe cases, or in people with chronic conditions, complications such as pneumonia may develop.

Recommendations for travellers

Wash your hands frequently - By washing your hands with soap under warm running water, you will reduce your chance of getting the flu. Alcohol-based hand gel can also be used if soap and water are not readily available. It's a good idea to keep some with you in your pocket or purse when you travel.

Practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette - Cover your mouth and/or nose to reduce the spread of germs. Remember to wash your hands afterwards.

Try to avoid close contact with people who appear to have a respiratory illness.
Monitor the World Health Organization website frequently for updates on the situation and recommendations.

Pay attention to local government and public health announcements movement restrictions and prevention recommendations.

If you are at risk of severe illness from influenza (for example, persons with chronic conditions such as diabetes, lung disease, heart disease, elderly or children under 2 years of age), see your health care provider before you travel.

If you are ill with respiratory illness either before you leave Canada or while abroad, you should delay your travel.

Travellers returning to Canada from countries where the H1N1 flu virus is occurring and who develop symptoms of H1N1 flu virus, especially high fever, are advised to follow recommendations in the Monitor Your Health section.
link: http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/tmp-pmv/2009/hsf-outside_na-090529-eng.php#monitor

This travel health notice is being provided by the Public Health Agency of Canada in response to the recent outbreak of H1N1 flu virus. Really what to wear - from snow to rain and minus to plus all in the same day.

The best way to shop is to go to one of the outlet malls and buy for all three variations of precipitation and temperature.

The first suggestion is the Dixie Outlet Mall located in Mississauga. The Dixie Outlet Mall is located in Mississauga, Ontario, at 1250 South Service Road off the Q.E.W. Dixie has over 140 international and national brand name stores with great bargain prices.

Category Listing

Accessories
Children's Fashions
Department Stores Drugs,
Cosmetics And Health
Food Services
Footwear
General Merchandise And Stationery
Home Furnishings
Leisure And Recreation
Mall Entertainment
Women's Men's Unisex And Specialty Fashions

Use the Mississauga Transit

Dixie Outlet Mall is serviced by three routes:
· Route 4 - Applewood
· Route 5 - Dixie
· Route 85 - Dixie Express

All three routes drop off at the same stop on Dixie's parking lot. The bus loop is immediately adjacent to the Burger King restaurant in the southeast parking lot, just off Dixie Road South. Service begins at approximately 5:00 a.m. daily and ends at approximately 12:00 a.m. Buses run every 20 minutes during peak hours and every 20-45 minutes during off-peak hours.

Use the Go Transit

On the Lakeshore West Line Exit the GO train at Long Branch station. Take the Mississauga Transit bus service from Long Branch station. The Route 5 northbound will take you directly to Dixie Outlet Mall.

For additional mall info
http://dixieoutletmall.shopping.ca

*******

Travel Language Culture Network Club BLOG URL
http://tlc-network-club.blogspot.com/

The Travel Language Culture Network organizes special student group prices, special events and activities to help provide students with both fun and educational programs. Avoid contractions such as “gonna” and “wanna.”

3 - Watch for nonverbal clues, such as body language, that indicate your message is not getting through.

4 - Use visual aids such as PowerPoint or charts during presentations or explanations. Employees may not be familiar with Canadian acronyms or jargon or slang English terms. These can be easily learned.

5 - Consider providing ESL courses for the non-native English speakers on your team. ESL Courses designed to cover specific industry terminology, and improve the four basic English skills.

Read the complete article:
http://www.canadianbusiness.com/entrepreneur/human_resources/article.jsp?content=20070411_115358_3340

*******

Travel Language Culture Network Club BLOG URL
http://tlc-network-club.blogspot.com/

The Travel Language Culture Network organizes special member group prices, special events and activities to help provide visitors with both fun and educational programs. Hostels in Canada can be converted old houses, rooming houses, hotels, warehouses, farms or factories. Travelers can choose what type of hostel experience they want from small and intimate to large and busy.

When shopping for a hostel the first item to look for is the style of rooms.

Hostels can be a series of dormitory style rooms or single rooms or a combination of single rooms and dormitory style rooms. The single or sometimes called private rooms can be for 1 person, a couple, family of 3, 4, 5 or 6 people. The dormitory style rooms are usually from six to 20 beds in a very large shared room.

The second item to look for is the pricing for the hostel. Some hostels charge per person per night and some charge by the room. Usually the price for a dormitory style room is from $15 to 25 per night per person. Usually private rooms start at $40. for single rooms.

The prices for hostels in busy tourist locations like Whistler BC, Banff and Jasper Alberta and the larger cities like Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal are the most expensive. The smaller locations like Niagara Falls, Ottawa and Quebec are usually less expensive.

The third item when shopping for hostels in Canada are the facilities. Does the hostel have private bathrooms with the private rooms. Are lockers available. Does the hostel supply all the bedding materials and towels. Are pay phones available, internet access, computers, a TV room a shared kitchen. Are any meals supplied. Is laundry available.

The fourth item is location of the hostel. Is the location close to the attractions you wish to visit, on a public transportation route and in a safe neighborhood.

When shopping for Canadian hostels - travelers should make a list - type of room - price range - minimum facilities - location - when choosing hostels.

When choosing hostels try to find someone who has stayed at the hostel or has posted a travel diary and maybe pictures of the hostel. It is good to have a second opinion.

Hostels can be excellent meeting places for travelers to exchange tips, short cuts and savings. Experienced travelers who share information can help you see the best attractions and maybe for less. Hostels often have ads from local travel services and attractions.

I have stayed at the Backpackers Hostel in Niagara Falls. It is five minutes away from the old downtown and bus station and a healthy 25 minute walk from the Falls. The hostel has 2 TV rooms, clean baths, men's and women's dorms and private rooms. The only problem is their internet is almost always down. They also provide breakfast in the price for the room. I like and recommend this hostel.

***********

TLC Blog URL
http://tlc-network-club.blogspot.com/

Links to our favourite websites:

Link to ESL in Canada Directory of ESL English tutors, teachers, classes, lessons, Canada universities, colleges, schools, Business English, Canadian ESL English as a second language
schools, programs, instructors, free ESL English lessons, homestay, education coaching, consulting services, student resources, information and advice across Canada, North America

Link to TLC Travel Language Culture Network language exchanges, travel, immigration, employment, shopping, homestay and professional services

Link to Sentence Master English Writing Game that helps students improve English
grammar, English vocabulary, writing phrases, clauses and complete English sentences.

Links to Education Services in Canada

Schools in Canada

Schools include: English schools, language schools, university colleges, universities, college, academy, academies, institute, institutes, camps, summer camp for kids, summer camps for students, wintercamps for students, public high and elementary schools, private high and elementary schools, career training, vocational training, activity training, licensed trades training.

Homestays in Canada

Homestay in Canada can be a wonderful experience for students to receive real one-on-one tutoring in English pronunciation, language rhythm, tone and timing. The homestay tutoring program will save students $300 to $800 each month and provide 30+ additional hours of individual attention each month.

The language students can also study TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, or Business English, for 2 hours per day with a specialist or at the local Board of Education continuing education programs or self-study at the Library or they can volunteer at the ESL in Canada Social club for free language exchanges.

Example Day Program for Homestay Tutor Program
7:30 AM wake up
8 AM Breakfast
9 - 11 AM Study class with tutor
12 Noon Lunch
2 - 5 PM Metro Reference Library - Language listening Laboratory
6 PM Supper
7:30 - 9 PM Continuing Education Classes
9 - 10:30 PM Homework and journals
10:30 PM lights out

Example Listing for Issac in Toronto
I have three rooms that are devoted to ESL students. The common areas are open concept, living room, dining room, and kitchen. I have a three-level house located directly across from the subway.

There is also a large backyard for summer bbq parties. I provide all meals for the students + I assist them with English. I also provide introductions into all of the various cultures of Canada.

We take tours into Quebec, Ottawa, and central Ontario. I do a lot of entertaining (huge dinner parties). During these events, the students are able to mingle with artists, academics and just plain folks.

During the warmer months, I encourage the students to bike and walk. We take cycling tours of Toronto's parks and we often pack a picnic lunch. In the evenings and weekends I take them with me (walking tours) as I do my shopping. This is an important tool of learning the basics in English and also how to mingle with Canadians ( I talk with strangers as I go through my daily duties). Most students don't know how to start a conversation with a stranger in public. I try to devote a large percentage of my time to the students. I enjoy helping the students to learn about Canada and Canadians.

Original Post
http://www.eslincanada.ca/homestaytutor1.html

*******

Travel Language Culture Network Club BLOG URL
http://tlc-network-club.blogspot.com/

The Travel Language Culture Network organizes special member group prices, special events and activities to help provide visitors with both fun and educational programs. The GST is the same rate all over Canada, the PST is the local rate for the province and yes they are all different.

As an example if you see something like a pen in a dollar store the sticker price will show the price as 1 dollar. When you go to the clerk at the cash register and the item is "rung up on the till" the price will be the 1 dollar plus the two taxes and you will have to pay the total amount. In Ontario the Federal GST is 5 percent and the PST is 8 percent so the total price of the pen is 1.13 with the added taxes.

In Canada there are different government taxes that are added to alcohol, gasoline, tobacco, hotel rooms and other targeted consumables. Always ask what taxes are included and what taxes are added for the items you wish to purchase. This will help you avoid final price surprises.

In Canada some restaurants, bars and hotels add a service fee to the final bill. This fee can be 10, 15, 20 or 25 percent and can shock shoppers if you were unaware of this additional service fee. Always ask if there is a service fee and what is the rate.

When shopping in Canada you have to compare prices as tax in or out and with or without a service fee.

Let's do an example.

If you want a coffee and see 2 prices ($1.25 all in from shop A) and you see a price of ($1.00 from shop B) you have to ask questions before buying your coffee.

A - $ 1.25 final price

B - $ 1.00 - plus service fee .20 plus GST .06 plus PST .09 final price $ 1.35

In Canada ask what taxes and service fees are included or added to the product price so that you can compare the products based on the final price.

go to the TLC site for additional information:
http://www.eslincanada.ca/shopping.html

*********

TLC blog URL
http://tlc-network-club.blogspot.com/

Links to our favourite websites

Link to ESL in Canada Directory of ESL English tutors, teachers, classes, lessons, Canada universities, colleges, schools, Business English, Canadian ESL English as a second language
schools, programs, instructors, free ESL English lessons, homestay, education coaching, consulting services, student resources, information and advice across Canada, North America

Link to TLC Travel Language Culture Network language exchanges, travel, immigration, employment, shopping, homestay and professional services

Link to Sentence Master English Writing Game that helps students improve English
grammar, English vocabulary, writing phrases, clauses and complete English sentences.

How to Shop in Canada

When shopping in Canada remember the price you see is not the final price! In Canada there are two taxes the GST (Federal Government Goods and Services Tax) and the PST (Provincial Sales Tax).

The Permanent Resident (PR) Card program issues PR Cards to permanent residents of Canada. The PR card holders must present this card when traveling by commercial carrier when traveling back into Canada.

The Resettlement Assistance Program helps individuals resettle in Canada by providing financial assistance and covers the costs of accommodations, essential clothing, household effects and other living expenses.

The Study Permits Program issues study permits (formerly "student authorizations") to eligible foreign students and provides information on the study permits application process.

The Temporary Resident Visa Program issues temporary resident visas either single entry visas or multiple entry visas and transit visas to eligible individuals and provides information on the Temporary Resident Visa Program application process.

The Travel Documents Program issues travel documents to individuals who have status in Canada. The Travel Documents Program also issues certificates of identity to legally landed persons.

The Work Permits Program issues work permits to eligible foreign workers who wish to work temporarily in Canada, provides information on the work permit application process, and issues visitor records for business visitors to Canada.

The second task is to apply yourself or choose to use an unpaid or paid representative.

The paid representatives must have both federal and provincial licenses and have to be in good standing with either the Canadian provincial or territorial law society, the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants, or the Chambre des notaires du Québec.

The third task is to assemble and complete the correct application forms for the Canadian immigration program that you have chosen. You can do this yourself or use a representative to assist in the form completion process. You must submit application fees in advance to the Canadian government according to the CIC fee schedule before any processing occurs.

For additional info go to Original Post:
http://www.eslincanada.ca/immigrationservices.html

*******

Travel Language Culture Network Club BLOG URL
http://tlc-network-club.blogspot.com/

The Travel Language Culture Network Club (TLC Club) organizes special member group prices, special events and activities to help provide visitors with both fun and educational programs.

Experienced travelers who share information can help you see the best attractions and maybe for less $.

They also provide breakfast in the price for the room. I like and recommend this hostel.

Original Post
http://www.eslincanada.ca/hostels.html

New Club ID Card
The New Travel Language Culture Network Club Card will help students obtain language training, shopping and travel discounts, special group discounts and access to events and activities for TLC Club members. In Canada and the USA we have names for the four seasons: winter, spring, summer and fall.

The changing weather means that students and visitors must be prepared for the seasonal changes in temperatures. Students must bring or purchase clothing suitable for each of the seasons that they will experience. If the student is staying longer than two months then they should be prepared for the change in seasons.

If the student is visiting during June and July be prepared for summer, if visiting August and September be prepared for Fall. The transitions from Fall to Winter can be dramatic as the temperature can drop from 20 degrees C one day to minus 5 degrees C the next. So this two month period requires students to be prepared both for Fall and Winter conditions.

In many of the countries located near the Equator where there is very little seasonal changes and the temperatures usually stay in the tropical range the available selection of winter clothing is usually non-existent. This can be a problem for students traveling to the countries during the winter season. It is difficult for the students to be prepared for the cold temperatures.

The other problem is that after the students have finished studying in the winter - the winter clothes will have no real use back in the student's tropical home.

For the very rich students and visitors - this is not a problem. They can go to the designer shops and pay $2,500 for boots and $20,000 for a custom winter coat and $1000 each for winter outfits and presto they are ready for anything winter throws at them. The rich can afford to put everything in storage - just in case they go on a North or South Pole expedition some day.

For the rest of the world buying clothes that you really need only once is a waste of money. My suggestion is to help a vary famous Charity organization in Canada or the USA.

In Toronto there are several "Goodwill" stores that sell used clothing that has been donated and refurbished by dis-advantaged workers and trainees. The money from purchases is used to fund the charity. It is an excellent organization and the prices for the clothing is very low.

I suggest that students buy coats, sweaters, pullovers, pants, thermal wear, hats, gloves, scarves and some boots from the very large and low priced selection of winter clothes.

When the winter is finished and there is no need for the clothing you can donate the clothes back to Goodwill - they will fix anything up for the next person. This means that you do not have to pack and take this very heavy clothing back to where it is not needed.

You can be prepared for winter and help an excellent charity.

In countries where the temperature drops to zero degrees C usually students from the warmer countries have to wear three layers. This usually consists of a thermal undershirt, shirt and sweater. When going outside students need a good outer coat able to insulate you from very cold temperatures. When outside at zero degrees you need three layers and a coat, hat, gloves and scarf.

When the temperature drops down to the minus 5 or minus 10 degree range then students start to wear four layers thermal undershirt, shirt, sweater and pullover sweater. When going outside students need the four layers plus a good outer coat, hat, gloves and scarf able to insulate you from the very cold temperatures and maybe the wind chill effect.

Networking Club information and recommendations will assist club members when shopping for winter clothes. Look for the Network Club "How to shop for the best prices" Seminar.

*******

Travel Language Culture Network Club BLOG URL
http://tlc-network-club.blogspot.com/

The Travel Language Culture Network Club (TLC Club) organizes special member group prices, special events and activities to help provide visitors with both fun and educational programs. The larger facility fitness clubs offer a wider range of cardio training such as group exercise classes, pools for swimming laps and running tracks.

Full fitness clubs offer several complete lines of training equipment such as Nautalis, Bally, Hammer, Lifefitness, group exercise classes which include weight training, step, yoga, pilates, spinning and high/low cardio cross training.

Some fitness clubs overlap with sports training and offer classes in running, boxing, mixed martial arts, sports conditioning training, strength flexibility and endurance training for sports participation.

Some fitness clubs overlap with spa and esthetic services and offer a variety of massage, stress reduction, skin, hair and cosmetic services.

Some fitness clubs overlap with restaurant diet and nutrition services and offer special fitness oriented snacks, meals, diet products, meal replacement, energy supplements and sit-down have a full meal facilities.

Some fitness clubs are networking locations and offer access to medical specialists, dietitians, spas, therapists and whatever may be required by the members.

There are huge international and national fitness chains with locations right across Canada. Some of these clubs have completely computerized systems that can tell you date, time, and location of your workouts. There are mom and pop fitness clubs with one location, no computers, old equipment and no group classes.

When choosing your fitness club the considerations should be convenient location, price, type of fitness club, type of equipment, type of classes, range of services and club atmosphere.

You must ask yourself some questions about the club

Is the club clean and well maintained?

Is the club too busy?

Is qualified help available?

is the fitness club staff nice and helpful?

Can I see myself working out here at this club in 2 months, 6 months and one year?

The TLC Club is negotiating with a select few fitness clubs to offer a special group rate for both teachers and students. Look for the announcements of price and locations.

Original Post
http://www.eslincanada.ca/fitnessclubs.html

*******

Travel Language Culture Network Club BLOG URL
http://tlc-network-club.blogspot.com/

The Travel Language Culture Network Club (TLC Club) organizes special member group prices, special events and activities to help provide visitors with both fun and educational programs.
