While article submission isn’t anything shockingly new to the world of SEO, many people STILL don’t do it… and for good reason. It takes so incredibly long to do manually.

I’ll admit, I had tried article submission at one point, but after I finally found a few article directories to submit my articles to, and then after manually copying and pasting my information into the required text-boxes on each submission site, I quickly realized that my time could be better spent doing something else.

Then I came across a free program created by Brad Callen and Bryxen Software, Inc. that allows you to automatically submit your articles to hundreds of article directories with a few mouse clicks. Basically all I had to do was input my article criteria into the software, ONCE! Then, the program would automatically fill in all of the required data at each of the submission websites. Pretty incredible if you ask me.

The only part I didn’t understand was why the program is free…
but I can’t argue with that I suppose.

The software currently contains around 700 article directories, all free to submit your articles to. It is the most straightforward program that I’ve come across, in that all you need to do is:

1. Input your article details (i.e. title, article body, bio, etc.) into the software

2. Click on the directory you want to submit to

And then the program will automatically fill in your article details. Then, you simply click the submit button and your article is instantly submitted to the directory. Then, you can move to the next directory, go through the list, and by the time you’re finished you’ll have roughly 700 one way links pointing to your website.

I can’t think of an easier way to get links. Of course, if you’re going to get links this quickly, it’s important to submit different variations of your articles, to make things look more natural to the search engines.

You can do this very easily with Article Submitter when you create your project in the beginning.

The software is constantly being updated and their is an incredible community of users established that all work together to make the software better and better, so you know you’re getting great value for the money.

To check out the free software, go here:
Free Article Submitter and click the Article Submitter tab at the top.

P.S. Yes, those links redirect through an affiliate link and I get paid a small commission IF you choose to upgrade. The platinum upgrade enables submission to all directories at once with one click. Otherwise, click the “Article Submitter” tab at the above links, and even without the Platinum version, you’ll still save tons of time because you still get one-click submission for each directory, which I prefer anyway so I can tailor each submission when needed.

Even with a great title and quality content, you are losing out on article marketing traffic…unless you know how to work the bio box. It’s all about the bio (or signature area for forum marketing) that links back to your site. Like most failing marketers, you are probably putting a link to your web site, but you are probably doing it all wrong.

Don’t just put your link there and expect people to click on it. Why would they? They’ve read your article, got the information, and now they are moving on to see what else they can read to learn more. And that’s exactly where you catch them, with your bio box.

First, don’t put everything in one article, split it up. Leave them wanting more, and in the bio box, tell them where to go next. I know what some of you are saying, “Why not just put the affiliate link there, skipping everything else?” Because, one, getting them to your site and reading more builds trust, gets them to come back for more, and they’re much more likely to follow through when you do present that affiliate link, and two, putting your affiliate link out front is the quickest way to get rejected, if not banned.

So what do you write to get people to click through to your web site? Check out my articles and pay close attention to the very last paragraph. That’s where I always have a hook to get viewers to keep reading more.

Here are a few tips:

the wording should get viewers to take action, as in clicking the link to find out more

don’t link to your home page, provide link to a directly related page or post

needs to provide incentive, why should they click the link? not just to learn more, pull them in

don’t use the same bio for all articles, tailor it to get the current subject

always use a keyword phrase in the link, it is after all a great backlink.

That’s the end of this short series and you should see more traffic from your articles following these steps, but don’t think that’s all there is to say.
The titles for your content are the first thing people see when clicking a link to view it. Here are three simple steps to writing great titles that will get more people to read your articles.

Three secrets to getting your articles read by more people is all in the title. Literally, it’s all there. The titles for your content are the first thing people see when clicking a link to view it. Here are three simple steps to writing great titles that will definitely get more people to read your articles, thus generating more traffic for your web site.

First, you have to use popular search terms, or keywords, in your titles so they show up when someone searches for those keywords. There are tons of variations on keyword phrases, and choosing the wrong one could lower the number of searches that match your keywords. Proper keyword research goes far to boost views and traffic, as well as examining competition and increasing search ranks.

You must also know there are a few types of headlines that work best. Here they are as best I can explain them:

Lists/Steps/HowTo: this type is probably the easiest to get peoples attention.

Comparisons and Reviews: many people search for specifics like this

Do This: tell viewers exactly what to do

Exciting News: nothing better than being the first to find out about something

Finally, you have to use words that draw on people’s emotions, draw on how it is going to be what they are looking for. There is a lot of marketing research done in this area alone, but here are some good examples:

5 Better Ways To [INSERT KEYWORDS]

How To Easily [INSERT KEYWORDS]

Three Simple Steps to [INSERT KEYWORDS]

Sign Up For [INSERT KEYWORDS] Before It Closes

Amazing [INSERT KEYWORDS] Goes Live Tomorrow

Top 10 [INSERT KEYWORDS]

Product A vs Product B

[INSERT KEYWORDS] Review

To get a better idea, visit some article directories and see what is getting the most views. See how the titles are worded.

Even with all these tips I’ve given you so far, unless your a natural writer and marketer, I bet your still not getting traffic. Keep going to see why your not getting tons of traffic from your article marketing (and it has nothing to do with quality content).

All the hard work you put into article marketing, video marketing, or almost any internet marketing for this matter, is wasted if you don't have one thing. What is it? What do YOU look at when your looking through search results?

All the hard work you put into article marketing, video marketing, or almost any internet marketing for this matter, is wasted if you don’t have one thing. What is it?

You HAVE to have an absolutely amazing title!

Think about it. What do you look at when your looking through search results? What is it that get’s you to click on that YouTube video you thought was going to be cool but turned out to be just plain stupid? It was the title! Sometimes the description and other data weighs in, but the title leads.

Most people think along the lines that great content is going to drive tons of traffic. Sorry, but you are all wrong. You have to remember, people do not see the content first, they see the title. Your article marketing won’t generate tons of traffic unless your title grabs their attention and gets them to click through to view the actual content of the article.

This applies for any marketing methods, not just article marketing, but video marketing, forum signatures, blog posts, PPC campaigns, and just about everything else. You won’t get ANYWHERE if you don’t have great title’s. Your going to get overlooked and all your hard work is going straight down the drain and into the archives.

So my first rule of internet marketing is to use a killer title in whatever form of marketing your using. Without a title that absolutely grabs the viewers attention and makes them say “I HAVE TO READ/WATCH THIS”, most people will see another article or video next to yours, read the title, and click it because it APPEARS to be better.

Now before I get a bunch of comments saying it’s all about the content too, yes, the content behind the title matters even more. You have to back the title up with absolutely amazing content. Otherwise, viewers will make a subconscious note, and the next time they see your name next to the title, they’ll immediately think “oh, him/her again, even though the title got my attention, I know it’s probably crap”. So yes, amazing “quality” content has to follow your title, and you have to do this every time. Every thing has to be really good content that will get people to remember you and will come back when they see titles that aren’t so catching (as not everything will be perfect, it takes trial and error).

So that’s the Why, on the next page you’ll see How To Get Your Articles Viewed By More People by writing absolutely amazing titles.

Free Article Marketing Tactics Series in the Totally Free Article Marketing section. I am practicing the methods in these articles to promote the articles themselves in the same way.

So I know I haven’t been as active as I first intended, but I hope to change all that. To start, I’m going to focus on specific section of this site in order to build each section up to a level I’m happy with, starting with a few marketing tactics to get more visitors coming, followed by an extensive series on how I use all the WordPress plugins for optimal pages, placement, marketing, and monetization.

So the first set of marketing tactics are going to revolve around article marketing. However, as several sections will overlap as, several of the tips can and should be used in other areas too, and I will restate, interlink, and expand on them when I get to the other tools and marketing techniques I use.

This Article Marketing Series will be a cornerstone for this site, and among the first marketing methods implemented. They will make up the Totally Free Article Marketing section and soon that page will be set up as a gateway to them. I will practice the methods in these articles, to promote the articles themselves in the same way. These methods (and a few others) should increase the flow of traffic to this site, and with any luck, I can start seeing some revenue generated from AdSense clicks and a couple of affiliate products I recommend.

Following the series, your going to learn the “other” methods I’m currently using to promote these articles and more. So look out for more free tools and how I’m using them in the near future on TotallyFreeWebSiteTools.com!

I was helping out a friend and he wanted to add a forum to his web site and already had WordPress installed. So I browsed through the plugins, and though I found a few nice ones that integrate others or provide some simple functionality, I didn’t find anything that was really easy and full of features at the same time. So I did a couple of quick Google searches, and found a great free forum plugin for WordPress!

I’m happy to announce, Totally Free Web Site Tools now includes Simple Press Forum, a plugin that adds an extensive forum to your WordPress site with very little setup. Though it’s not in the WordPress plugins repository, a quick download and upload to your plugins folder, a few clicks, and your on your way to creating a great forum, totally built-in to WordPress!

I’ve got this plugin running on both my friend’s site and here on TotallyFreeWebSiteTools.com, I can’t wait to start filling it out with forums and topics, and you should go there and introduce yourself now!

With Google’s latest release of their Chrome browser, one of the most noticed features is the extensions capability. IMO, this is the one feature that was holding Chrome back as a true competitor with Firefox, being that Firefox could be highly customized and extended with literally thousands of extensions available. With it’s super fast start-up time and the minimalist interface approach, I used Google Chrome only on occasion to look something up quickly or on the go. I used Firefox with all the extensions I could possibly want on a regular basis, and it served my purpose well, where Chrome lacked the many features I have grown used to having in Firefox.

Now that Google Chrome has the added extensions feature, and several Firefox favorites have already been ported, I think Chrome has a real chance of competing with Firefox for our attention. I know it has my attention and I’m using it just as much as Firefox now, though I’ve already got so much invested in Firefox and things already setup like I want them, so there’s no push for completely moving over to Chrome yet.

What Extensions Are You Using?

So I am an extension addict (plugins too, for the WordPress users out there), and the first thing I checked out after I upgraded was the extensions. I was impressed when I found several of my favorite Firefox extensions listed. I was further impressed with the ease at which managing them was. One in particular is awesome enough, a lot of my SEO research tabs have moved to Google Chrome! More on that below, where I list all the extensions I am using right now. But enough about my thoughts. What do you think these new features mean for Chrome’s competition? There is also some things going on with Chrome APIs, not to keen on what that’s about yet. Post your comments below!

What Google Chrome Extension’s Am I Using?

1-ClickWeather for Chrome – I’m a Weather.com fan, and when I saw a Weather.com extension and the vague idea I had from the text, I had to try it out, and I’m glad I did. It’s not all inclusive, and I think it could be expanded, but it does give a decent view of the current weather, radar image, and several links to key Weather.com local area pages, including the Classic Animated Radar Map, which sold me.

AdBlock – What more can I say, it blocks the ads. Firefox users will be familiar with this one. I’m very happy to see it here. A second plugin, Browser Button for AdBlock adds a button to the right side of the toolbar so you can easily turn it off if needed.

Bookmark Tree – I searched for this one. It adds a yellow star button to the right side of the toolbar, which produces a drop-down list of your favorites in a folder tree view. I had been using the bookmarks bar for one-click access to some sites I used most often in Chrome (which before was few). This seems a much better option and frees up more screen space, I love how slim Google Chrome is!

Chrome SEO – Here it is! This is the SEO tool that I liked so much I moved many tabs away from Firefox and into Chrome (sorry Firefox, I still love you). I used SEO Quake in Firefox because it was all encompassing and I could easily turn it on and off. There might be other alternatives like this, so please let me know. But this extension, Chrome SEO, gives the main site statistics I look at in a nice little drop down menu from an icon added to the right side of the toolbar, including page ranks, inbound links, and quite a few others, plus links to more. It only runs when you click it, so it isn’t hogging any bandwidth when you really don’t need it, which was the deciding factor in my case.

Session Manager – Oh the joys! My Firefox would not be complete without my long list of saved sessions, of which I use three or four regularly. The absence of this feature has been the main cause for me not to move to Chrome. I have way to much going on and things I need to check out that I have to have my saved sessions. I haven’t had enough time to really test them out in Chrome yet, but I look forward to the experience.

Give Me More!

That’s it for now. I am sure I will add more as time goes, but I have enough to learn for now. You can find more extensions at chrome.google.com/extensions. You can also learn more about the plugins feature at “Google Chrome Blog: Over 1,500 new features for Google Chrome“. So check them out, and let me know what you find is great about the new Google Chrome!

A long time ago (only 5-10 years really), exchanging links with a bunch of other web sites was a great way to build up your reputation and get bumped to the top of the search engines. But with the rise of Google and the evolution of the internet, it now takes much more to get results. But is link exchange really dead, as many internet marketers claim?

I know this has been discussed in man places across the web, but in my own opinion, I think link exchange still has value, just not as much as it used too. Now, you have to try many different marketing methods, each of which also only has a little value, but combined can bring traffic and raise rankings. So while exchanging links may have very little impact on your traffic and search engine rank, a little here and a little there still adds up.

So, if link exchange isn’t dead, how do you go about exchanging links? Personally, I use WordPress for all my web sites, and I install a great plugin called WP Link Directory, from http://www.seanbluestone.com/wp-link-directory, to manage my link exchanges. Following is a rough outline of how I go about setting up this free plugin.

How about you? Do you believe traditional link exchanges are dead or alive?

LINK EXCHANGE SETUP

WP Link Directory – settings located at bottom of admin navigation

require reciprocal link from "everyone"

you will probably want all requests to reciprocate

some of your requests will not be recipricated (non-profit sites)

in the end, you can still decide on each individual exchange

you should probably optimize the reciprical link HTML

optimize title with keywords

provide longer description, place some keywords in description

order links by "newest first"

yes already default, but some say change it, i say it simulates changing content

detailed info text is a matter of preference

display page rank – no, i prefer not to, most users don’t know or care

use nofollow, leave default no, defeats the purpose of reciprocating

categories per row – I prefer 1 row, not 2, view page to see differences

show counts – shows number of links next to categories, your preference

require approval for all links, there is spam and scams here like everywhere else on the internet

extra fields required, if you want to be able to communicate with them

captcha – definitly, but secureimage vs captchas.net, dunno that one

secureimage did not work for me, captchas.net is hard to read sometimes, both have audio backup

style file – this plugin is css friendly and accepts a style sheet

if you know css, have fun making it look like you want it

if not, I can do it for a small price

permalinks – since we are using permalinks, fill this in

some permalink structures can be defined here

but with our prior settings, we will actually leave it blank

strike the rest of this, it was to get subdirectory categories, doesn’t work with ".html on pages" plugin

acts as a sub-directory structure where link exchange pages are located

i prefer "resources" (no quotes)

track hits in – you may want to turn this on

this way you can see which exchanges are generating traffic

Edit Categories

setup a few general categories, 3-5 is good, you may or may not add more later

could possibly closely resemble blog categories

provide description, keep to similar lengths, but the bigger the better here

long description can help seo by providing more content to search on pages full of link exchanges

in addition to normal link exchanges, also add non profit sites

it is rumored that google favors sites with one-way links out to non-profit sites

i think scattering non-profit sites in your link exchanges serves two purposes

google likes you more, and resource pages have more resources, meaning more content

better resources means visitors browse them more which ends up good for everyone

non-profit sites usually end as .edu and .org, some as .com, but usually link is not reciprocated

Premium Links – a matter of preference and subject for another article

Tagging is for multi-author blogs, where users provide your content and links can be tagged/flagged bad, etc.

Having an assortment of resources provide some additional content while your blog is new.

Add non-profit sites to your link exchanges

unless they clearly have a link exchange area, don’t bother asking for reciprocal links

don’t bother exchanging links until you have some content, at least 5 posts

Link Exchange Page

this plugin is viewed as a page on your blog, create it and see is the easiest way to understand

make a new page, I like to name mine Resources, switch to code view, add [ wplinkdir ], without spaces

Page Lists Plus – uncheck Include bo

If you don’t know anything about where your visitors are coming from or how many your getting, your missing out on some very key information. Tracking where your visitors come from is key to optimizing the way you promote your site.

Tracking visitors as they browse a web site can also provide a great marketing tool with many other great statistics. By helping you learn how your visitors view your web site and what gets viewed most often, you can tailor the site to best meet your visitors’ needs and better judge which marketing tactics are working and which ones are not. Tracking the number of visitors and where they came from can provide even more great statistics for determining popular pages, top marketing techniques, and much more.

Where Do They Come From?

When promoting, or marketing, your web site, there are so many things you can do that draw traffic from different places. Without some way of measuring the success of different marketing techniques, there is a good chance you are wasting valuable time promoting your site in ways that just aren’t worth the time and effort for the amount of visitors you get in return. On the flip-side, there are most likely a few techniques you are already using that are generating the majority of your traffic. By tracking where all your visitors come from, you can generally see what had the most success in attracting targeted visitors to your web site. Did they see the web page’s listing in a search engine or did they find your site from a link on someone else’s page? Maybe they saw your domain name somewhere and typed it in the address bar. Having this information can tell you where most of your traffic is coming from, which search terms the web page is coming up under and much more.

At the lowest level, tracking visitors provides a way to count how many people have visited each of your pages. This can show you which pages are getting the most traffic and the general popularity of your web site and each page. However there is also a bunch of other information which can be collected and used to provide other statistics. For instance, you can also track how visitors move through the site, page to page, as well as how long they stay at each page. This can show you what is drawing the visitors’ attention as they browse through your web site. In addition to page popularity and related statistics, there is also much more information which can be collected and stored which can provide even more vision into who your visitors are and how they see your web site.

Tracking a visitor’s IP address can also provide a great deal of information about your visitors such as where the user is located in the world and what internet service provider they are using. This can help you further target your audience based on what type of visitors you are receiving, track their movements on your site over a period of time, and much more. In addition to who and where visitors are, you can also see how they are viewing your web site. From what operating system they are running to which web browser and what version they are using and more, there are some great statistics with important information. One important piece of information to track is the resolution your visitors are viewing your web site at. Your web site’s width should be optimized for displaying at a resolution that is best for the majority of your visitors. Also considering how much space you have before the user has to scroll down can play a big part in the design of the top of your web site. Another important statistic is how many visitors have JavaScript disabled. Many people are beginning to restrict web sites from running JavaScripts by default. If JavaScript provides a required function on the web site but many of your visitors disable there JavaScript, an alternative may need to be implemented.

So I need to track my visitors…how?

Tracking visitors is not a hard thing to do. In fact, even the cheapest web hosts include visitor tracking and logging to some degree. There are also several third-party services that provide a light-weight plugin to provide a comprehensive analysis of visitors to the site. I have checked with three different web hosting services and they all provide the same tracking features: raw data logs, a poor program called Webalizer, and a comprehensive program called AWstats. Although AWstats provides a great deal of information, statistics, as well as charts and graphs, the way it is all presented is somewhat disorganized and inefficient. This is true especially when compared to leading third-party services which provide intuitive interfaces as well as complete and comprehensive statistics with well organized charts and graphs.

Two of the leading third-party tracking services are StatCounter and GoStats. Both have free services that provide the same statistics as AWstats, however the interface is much more user friendly and the information is much better organized and laid out, providing a great source for viewing and comparing important statistics. Both have great intuitive interfaces, but each organizes and displays the data a little differently. StatCounter separates more information across several different pages and provides a drill-down tool to get more information and reference other ways of seeing the same or similar statistics. GoStats provides some of the same features, but instead provides a great summary page with summarized details from the most important statistics. Both are unique in how they display the data and depending on how you want to see things, what one considers a disadvantage may be an advantage to someone else, and vice-versa.

Since third-party services provide a much better interface for viewing and understanding the many statistics available, I suggest you not use the web hosting service’s statistics program and instead use one of these third-party services. I myself believe GoStats has a superior interface than StatCounter for quickly reviewing a summary a web site’s traffic, yet it still provides the detailed, comprehensive statistics for deep analysis. Both run light-weight scripts that can be added to the end of each web page, so the visitors should see no change in how fast the page takes to load. If you prefer, we can even install scripts from both services for further comparison and to see what the personal preferences are of those who will be using its interface to view the statistics. One interface may prove to be more efficient than another, only testing and regular use of each will tell.

One more service takes a different approach to tracking your visitors, a very interesting one too! How would you like to see exactly what your visitors see? How about videos recordings of your visitors screen as they browse your web site? Impossible you say? Not anymore! A free service called ClickTale literally records videos of your visitors as they browse your pages – down to mouse movements, clicks, and even form fields! If anything, this is just too cool! Even better, you can now tell whether users are actually reading your content or just scrolling through, you can see the flow your visitors go through to decide where to go next. I had to try it out and I have to say it is awesome!

Anyway, once you have collected a good sized collection of statistics, you will have a good view of who is viewing the web site and how they are viewing it. By tailoring the pages of the site to better serve its visitors, they will have a much better experience as they browse your pages and you will gain more insight into how and where they are going on your web site. With a third-party service providing great tools to view those statistics, understanding your traffic has never been easier.

When it comes to article marketing, the questions I see the most revolves around submitting articles, or more precisely, how and where to submit articles. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of web sites that allow you to submit articles for publishing on their site, but should you submit your articles too all of them? While many agree that you should spread your articles as far as you can, many also agree that relevancy is key in internet marketing. Why submit an article about dogs to an articles site about weight loss? The viewers there aren’t going to be interested in your article, they are looking for stuff about dogs. Sure, you get another link back to your site, but then again, now search engines see a site about dogs linking back to your site, but it is not relevant and could look bad. At least that is my reasoning – let me know what you think. But while niche article sites are great to submit your articles to, there are many article sites that accept articles on any topic. In my research, I’ve found there are several top sites (all free) that will benefit you the most.

In my search for places to submit my articles, I came across several lists in forums and other websites. They will all be listed near the end for reference. Some were Top5/Top10 lists while other listed anywhere from 15 sites to 200 sites or more. Some listings were old, and some of the best aren’t around anymore (is ArticlesOn.com really hacked?). So I wanted to make an updated list, with a separate list for most popular places to submit articles, as well as a long list of article niche sites. Some sites now charge for their service, and they will be in a separate list, so all the other sites listed are either free or have a free service plan.

How to Easily Submit Articles to Multiple Sites

Submitting an article to five or ten sites may not seem so hard to do, but if your submitting articles to 20 or more article sites, the time it takes to submit to each site starts to build up. To speed up the process, I also searched for some sort of auto-submitter to submit my articles faster. I found several that were free and several more that were paid services. If you really want to submit to hundreds of article sites, I suggest a paid service. Nobody has made a program that will automatically submit to all those sites at once. However, I did find one program by well known Internet Marketer Brad Callen, simply called Article Submitter. You can download it for free by clicking Article Submitter at the top of the Article Submitter sales page. Yes, that goes to a affiliate link and I make money if you choose the Platinum version, otherwise, click the link at the top for the free version. I also found another program by the name of Article Submitter (yes, same name, I will update this with a link later) which does auto-submit articles (and register you) for several hundred sites, but it did not have any way to remove article directories that were not relevant, such as placing an internet marketing site on an article directory about guitars. Brad Callen’s free Article Submitter allows you to selectively register and submit articles to selected directories. It also keeps track of login information and article information, and then provides an automatic auto-fill feature – all you have to do it review and submit to each site! It is missing a few great article directories though, but it also dual purposes as a great way to organize your articles. You can easily copy and paste article details from this program into those directories that aren’t built in to it. It also could serve as a built-in list of directories to easily submit to. Again, there is also a Platinum version for sale, which has over 600 article directories and does auto-submit your articles, saving a lot of time if your submitting to a couple hundred directories. This blog is all about free tools, but if your interested, be sure to check it out.

Pay Sites to Spread Your Articles

I’m not going into a bunch of detail here, as this site is mostly about free stuff. But if you have the money and not the time, paying may be a great option for you. There are many services out there, I for sure do not know of them all, and I’m not looking for them. But, of course, I did find some in my search for free sites, so I figured it doesn’t hurt to list them too. Here are a few pay sites that were recommended at least once. Again, I wasn’t looking for these, so the list is short and all that I could remember. Let me know if there are some great ones to add to the list!

PR Leap

PR Web

iSnare – used to be free, still free with referral credits

Resources

Take my word for it, or not. Here are the sites where I found all of the above listed.

But there are more! There are hundreds of more places to submit articles. Add to that hundreds of article distributors and hundreds of group boards like Yahoo Groups and Google Groups, you could be spreading for ever!

And then there are the Social Networking sites like Digg.com. But that will span into another post another day. Let me know your thoughts on this list, I will try to keep it updated and will add your submissions and more information as I come by it!
