If you’ve ever taken your kids to the NGV children’s gallery, you already know the drill. They sprint to the entrance, make a beeline for the water wall, and suddenly you’ve got 45 minutes to kill while they try to figure out exactly how wet they can get their sleeves. The good news? From December, there’s a whole lot more to keep them busy. Artist Mika Rottenberg has created a new children’s exhibition that takes kids on a surreal, sensory journey — and it lands right alongside the much-anticipated NGV Triennial, so you can make a proper day of it.

What Is Squish, Twist, Fizz at NGV?

At the heart of the exhibition is Cosmic Generator (2017), a video work by Rottenberg that travels through brightly lit underground tunnels, where viewers come across people dressed as tacos and in business suits, women working in market stalls filled with sparkly decorations, and rickety food carts moving along the border between Mexico and the United States.

It’s strange, funny and fascinating — even for adults. By linking seemingly unrelated places and materials together, Rottenberg suggests that everything in our world may be more connected than it appears.

But the video is just the starting point. Extending beyond the screen, the exhibition invites children into a hands-on environment inspired by the film’s textures, colours and movement, where they can draw, play with light and sound, and make sculptures from plastic waste collected from the streets of New York City.

What Can Kids Actually Do There?

This isn’t a look-don’t-touch situation. The whole space is designed for getting stuck in.

Kids can make sculptures from real recycled materials, get hands-on with drawing activities, and play with light and sound installations. The Squish, Twist, Fizz exhibition highlights Rottenberg’s interest in sensory experiences and tactile materials and processes. So expect squishing, twisting, fizzing — the name really does say it all. 

It works well for a range of ages, but kids roughly between 3 and 10 will get the most out of it. Toddlers will love the textures and colours. Primary-school-aged kids can really dig into the making activities.

The NGV Triennial Connection — Bonus Visits Built In

One of the best things about timing a visit for this exhibition? The 2026 NGV Triennial spans every level of NGV International and features nearly 100 artists from 35 countries, including more than 25 world-premiere commissions — from thought-provoking installations to playful, larger-than-life works. 

The magic starts from the moment you arrive — the famous water wall that greets visitors before they’ve even stepped inside gets a Triennial makeover too. So yes, you’ll still get the water wall moment. Your kids will be thrilled to know that hasn’t changed. 

Also on display as part of the Triennial is the interactive work The Birds (2026) by Benedikte Bjerre (Denmark), where a large gallery space fills with helium-inflated foil penguins. Visitors can pick them up and watch them slowly float back to the ground. Honestly, that’s going to be a highlight for kids too — add it to your must-see list while you’re there.

The Triennial runs from 13 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, and entry is free.

What Parents Need to Know

Cost: Free entry for the children’s gallery exhibition and the NGV Triennial. No booking required.

Location: NGV International, 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne. The children’s gallery is on the ground level.

Pram access: The NGV is fully pram-friendly with lifts throughout.

Toilets: Baby change facilities are available in the gallery.

Food: The NGV Cafe and Tea Room are both on-site. St Kilda Road has plenty of other options nearby if you want to head out after.

Parking: Paid parking is available underneath the NGV. Tram stops (tram 3 and 5) run directly outside, which is honestly the easier option with kids in tow.

How long to allow: Budget at least 30–45 minutes for the children’s gallery alone. If you’re planning to explore the Triennial too, allow 2–3 hours minimum — or split it across two visits.

Our Take

We love the NGV children’s gallery for exactly the reason most parents do: it’s free, it’s in the CBD, and it keeps kids genuinely occupied without any screen time guilt. 

Squish, Twist, Fizz looks like one of the more ambitious children’s exhibitions they’ve put on — you’re getting a proper artist with an international profile, real hands-on making activities, and a film that’s weird enough to hold adult attention too.

The timing is also smart. Opening mid-December means it’s ready for the summer school holidays, and it runs through to April — so you can also plan an Easter visit when the weather cools off a bit.

The one honest caveat: popular exhibitions at the children’s gallery can get crowded during school holidays, especially on weekends. If you can visit on a weekday, do it. You’ll get more space, and the kids can actually move freely between the activities.

Is It Worth Visiting NGV with Kids?

Yes — especially if you’re already planning a Triennial visit. The children’s gallery gives little ones their own entry point into the experience, and the combination of a free, hands-on exhibition plus the inflatable penguins and everything else the Triennial offers means there’s genuinely a lot to work with for a family day out.

Best suited for families with kids aged 2–10, though older kids who like making things will also find plenty to do.

Tips for Firelight Festival 2026 with Kids

Firelight Festival is 100% family-friendly and one of the best free things to do in Melbourne with kids during winter.

Having said that, here are our tips if you’re visiting with kids to make it a fun and smooth experience for everyone:

• Go early (right at 5pm) to avoid the biggest crowds.
• Wear warm, layered clothing. The whole event is outdoors and it gets especially cold near the water.
• Bring a stroller if needed, but be prepared for having to navigate it through crowds.
• Check out quieter spaces like Buluk Park and Docklands Central Park for some downtime. Both of these parks have playgrounds too (though there is shallow water play at Buluk Park, so beware!).
• Bring a blanket to sit and enjoy performances.
• While there are winter food and drink offerings scattered throughout the festival, given the large crowds expected we suggest packing some snacks, a thermos of hot chocolate and BYO water bottles.
• For extra winter festival fun, bring your own marshmallows and reusable telescopic marshmallow toasting forks! We highly recommend the giant ones from Grounded Pleasures.

How to Get to Firelight Festival

Firelight Festival is easy to access via public transport and is highly recommended as there is very limited parking.

Getting to Firelight Festival by Tram

The closest tram stops are along Harbour Esplanade and Docklands Drive. Trams 11, 30, 35, 48 and 86 service the Docklands precinct. Please note that due to event road closures during Firelight Festival, trams 35, 70 and 75 will stop at the Flinders West stop rather than running through Harbour Esplanade from 3.30pm each day from Friday 3 July to Sunday 5 July 2026.

Southern Cross Station is also nearby, with stops for both V/Line and Metropolitan train lines. It is a short walk across the Spencer Street/Bourke Street pedestrian footbridge to the festival area.

If you’re driving, allow time to find parking as Docklands can be busy. Paid parking is available at Marvel Stadium and The District Docklands — note that the Marvel Stadium carpark will be closed on Saturday 5 July between 3.30pm and 4.30pm. There is limited paid on-street parking in the Docklands area on Harbour Esplanade, Bourke Street and Docklands Drive.

Built on the former Beer Deluxe site, now you’ll find an all-day menu, an enclosed kids’ playground, cosy indoor seating and heated outdoor areas.

If you’re meeting friends from across Melbourne, heading to the NGV, catching something at ACMI, or doing a day at Fed Square, this is a great central place to land for lunch or dinner.

What Is Good Nature Hotel?

Good Nature sits over two levels on Fed Square, steps from the Yarra River and Flinders Street/Town Hall Station. It’s an all-weather pub and beer garden with a covered terrace, an outdoor area called The Grove, and an undercover family dining space next to the kids’ playground.

The design is noticeably greener than your average city pub, with native planting, light timber, natural stone, and layered lighting. The covered terrace has great views over the Fed Square atrium and Flinders Street. All outdoor areas are heated, which makes this a year-round option whatever the Melbourne weather throws at you.

The Food at Good Nature Hotel

Good Nature is owned by the Australian Venue Co. so if you’re familiar with their other venues (eg Studley Park Boathouse, Anglers Tavern Maribrynong, Victoria Hotel Yarraville, Brewdog Coburg), you’ll know that they offer modern pub fare done reliably well.

We shared the lamb skewers, a roasted vegetable salad, greens, a barramundi main, and prawn rolls. The barramundi in particular stood out for the crispy skin and hearty serve of fresh veg. On the downside, the brioche buns for the prawn rolls were hard and stale.

Kids Menu

The Good Nature kids menu covers the usual suspects: chicken nuggets, battered fish nuggets, mini cheeseburger, kids parma, kids steak, and pasta with sugo. Prices run from $15-20, which is on the high side for kids meals in our experience, but reasonable for a prime location in Melbourne CBD.

One honest note: it’s a very beige-and-red kids menu — almost everything comes with chips and tomato sauce. Fine for a treat meal, but I’d love to see vegetables or salad option alongside the default fries. Or adding one slightly more interesting option, for instance a smaller serving of the lamb skewers or Massaman beef curry from the main menu.

The Kids’ Playground

The playground is double-storey and enclosed with a glass gate, so little ones can’t wander. It’s a similar setup to the playground at Auburn Hotel Hawthorn and the newer one at Station Hotel Footscray.

It’s best suited to preschoolers and lower primary kids as the climbing structure has fairly low ceilings, so bigger kids will outgrow it quickly. It’s positioned right next to the family dining area in The Grove, so you can eat and keep an eye on them at the same time.

Getting There

Good Nature is about as well-located as it gets for public transport. Flinders Street Station/Town Hall Station is right across the road and trams run along Swanston and Flinders Streets. If you’re driving, paid parking is available under Federation Square.

Prams and High Chairs

There are plenty of plastic IKEA high chairs available, with space to park prams both inside and outside. The Grove outdoor area is particularly pram-friendly.

Accessible Toilets and Change Table

The bathrooms are on a lower level, reached via a narrow staircase with a single turn ie there’s no lift within the venue. If you’re seated in The Grove near the playground (which is where families will naturally end up), getting small children to the bathroom is a bit of an expedition. You will have to walk or carry your child as I think you’ll struggle to carry your pram down the stairs (no way a double pram will fit), especially if there’s someone coming up or down in the other direction. There is a change table in the accessible bathroom downstairs.

The easier option with a pram is to exit the venue and use the Federation Square public toilets. The lifts are right next to the playground and the bathrooms are downstairs from there.

Noise and Atmosphere

Good Nature screens live sport on many screens (sound is turned down) and gets busy on game days as it’s a city pub right on the MCG corridor. For a more relaxed family lunch, aim for a weekday or an early sitting on weekends before the footy crowd arrives.

Fed Square Visibility

If you’re seated near the playground in The Grove, visibility of the main screen at Fed Square is limited.

Good Nature works best as part of a bigger city day.

A five-minute walk along the Yarra at Birrarung Marr, Artplay is a creative arts studio run by the City of Melbourne for kids from babies to 13. Throughout the year it runs workshops, performances and exhibitions across everything from ceramics and puppetry to circus and digital art — most require bookings, so check what’s on before you go.

NGV Australia and NGV International

There are two NGV venues: The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia is right at Federation Square — free entry, Australian art across three levels, and a great starting point if you have younger kids or limited time. NGV International is on St Kilda Road, about a ten-minute walk across the river — bigger, with dedicated NGV Kids gallery spaces, a parents’ room with feeding facilities, and the major ticketed exhibitions. Koorie Heritage Trust

Koorie Heritage Trust is one of Melbourne’s most worthwhile stops for families with older kids. The galleries showcase Koorie art and cultural artefacts, and the guided Birrarung Wilam Walk along the Yarra is particularly good — indigenous guides bring the history of the land to life. The whole Fed Square precinct is pram-accessible with lifts throughout and easy to navigate with kids of all ages.

Good Nature Hotel: Our Verdict

The location is unbeatable, the playground works well for little kids, the food is reliable, and the heated outdoor areas mean it holds up in any season. The bathroom situation is worth knowing in advance — particularly if you have a toddler in tow — and the kids menu could do with more colour on the plate. I don’t think either is a dealbreaker.

If a city day with kids is on the cards, this is a very good place to stop for lunch.

EMERGENCE[Y] brings together artists and scientists from around the world to look at how we adapt when everything is changing at once.

The themes are big, so I think it’s best suited for kids 8+ years. As the entry is free, it’s an easy decision to drop in for a short time even with younger kids, though you may end up staying much longer. I visited with my 15-year-old and we stayed almost two hours.

What EMERGENCE[Y] Is About

The exhibition title is a play on two words: emergence ie what happens when complex things develop from simpler ones and emergency – which pretty much describes the state of the planet right now).

There are 18 works on show. Some are art, some are science, most are both. Not all of them are equally accessible for kids, and some have content warnings: references to the climate crisis, the concept of death, and medical themes.

There is one graphic video installation of decaying animal flesh with fly and maggot sounds that I’d avoid. Even I felt a bit squeamish watching it on a large scale.

Exhibition Highlights for Families

Vertical Farm

Pick (and eat) microgreens grown on a working hydroponic farm in the gallery! Built by Melbourne company Greenspace, it grows fresh produce using LED lighting, no soil, and zero pesticides. There’s also a video about robot farming research happening on University of Melbourne rooftops nearby.

Tuengel

As you walk in you’ll see a large-scale immersive digital installation by Chinese artist Dr Wang Zhigang. There are hundreds of old PC towers and servers stacked into dense techno-forests, with generated imagery weaving between ancient myth and futuristic ruin.

non(COMBUSTIBLE) CLOTHING

Clothing prototypes made from mushroom mycelium and recycled cotton — materials that are naturally fire-resistant, waterproof, and compostable. You can try pieces on as part of the installation and take a photo! A good hands-on experience, and a natural talking point about bushfire and climate.

Perfect Sleep

Lie down on a wooden daybed and listen to dreamscape audio while the artists make an argument about rest as a form of resistance to a system that never stops. The concept is more abstract for younger kids, but the daybed is probably the most popular spot in the whole exhibition (and I almost fell sleep on it).

Why Parents Love It

While Science Gallery Melbourne is officially designed for young people aged 15–25, families with younger kids (especially those in upper primary or early high school) will still find it accessible and engaging.

FAQs – Visiting Science Gallery Melbourne

What age group is the exhibition best suited for?

Kids aged 8 and up will get the most out of it. The gallery is officially designed for young people aged 15–25, but older primary and early high school kids engage well with the hands-on and visual works. Younger kids can still come — some pieces are striking regardless of age — but the concepts will largely go over their heads.

Do I need to book tickets in advance?

No — entry is free and bookings aren’t required. You can drop in anytime during opening hours.

How long should we allow for a visit?

Around 45 minutes to 1.5 hours is ideal, depending on how much time your kids spend with each work. I visited with my 15-year-old and we stayed almost two hours, mostly because we were mesmerised by the 40-minute film by Chinese artist Liu Chuang examining the human and environmental cost of cryptocurrency infrastructure (Bitcoin Mining and Field Recordings of Ethnic Minorities).

Is it suitable for prams?

Yes. The gallery is fully accessible, with lift access and wide spaces suitable for prams.

Can we take photos inside?

Generally, photography is allowed for personal use, but avoid flash photography. Check signage or ask staff if you’re unsure.

Is food available on-site?

No café at the gallery itself. Plenty of options on Grattan Street and Lygon Street nearby.

When is the best time to visit?

Weekdays or mornings tend to be quieter. If you’re visiting during school holidays, aim to arrive early to avoid crowds.

We attended Dinos After Dark in 2024 and the kids were completely mesmerised. In 2026, the dinosaurs haven’t changed — they’re still enormous, still lit up, and still thrilling!

What’s new for 2026 is everything around them. Here’s what to expect at Dinos After Dark, what’s changed, and how to make the most of your night.

The daytime experience, Dinos at the Zoo is also showing at all three zoos (Melbourne Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary and Werribee Open Range Zoo) until 12 July 2026.

What’s at Dinos After Dark 2026

Dinosaur Light Show

Picture walking alongside 14 gigantic, illuminated dinosaurs – a sight that’s as educational as it is awe-inspiring. From Brachiosaurus to Tyrannosaurus Rex, these animatronic giants bring the prehistoric world to life amidst the trees and under the starry night sky.

While trekking along the trail of dinos, families can learn a little about each dinosaur thanks to information signs and interactive projections on the trees.

Around each corner there are zoo team members ready to answer questions, direct you where to go or assist as needed.

My kids are mesmerised by the sounds and size of these creatures roaming right among us.

One important note for families: the zoo’s animals are not on display during this event. It’s the dinosaurs and evening activations only — not a standard zoo visit. Worth being prepared and wording up everyone before you go.

Disco Glow Zone

A neon-lit dancefloor with family-friendly music and dino-tastic beats. Kids can grab a hula hoop or spinning plate, and there’s a circus performer on hand to show them how it’s done.

Bubble Snow Zone

The African Village transforms into a snowy playground. Kids can run, jump and dance through the snow — a good one for burning off energy between dino encounters.

Roving Performers

Keep an eye out across the night for a stilt walker, fire twirler, and hula hoop performer moving through the crowd. They pop up throughout the evening.

Fire Pits and Marshmallow Toasting

Grab a stick and toast a marshmallow over the fire pits. Bring your own marshmallows and toasting sticks — these retractable reusable forks are brilliant for it.

Add On: Dusk Safari Tour Before Dinos After Dark

This is the only opportunity during the evening to see the zoo’s actual animals. I

The Dusk Safari is a one-hour guided bus tour through the Lower Savannah, departing at 4:15pm before Dinos After Dark opens at 5:30pm.

You’ll travel a special dusk-only route, watch bison on the run, meet keepers, and see wildlife settle in for the night. Birds and sometimes bats overhead. There’s only one bus per night with 70 seats, so it will book out quickly!

It’s a great add-on if you want more than just the dino experience.

Pricing: $40 non-member / $36 member (per person — tickets required for children over 1)

Meeting point: Front entry at 4pm. Latecomers can’t board.

Important: You must have a Dinos After Dark ticket to book the Dusk Safari.

Food and Drinks

The Meerkat Bistro will be open from 5:30pm–8:30pm with a special Dinos After Dark menu including seasonal treats and grab-and-go options.

New for 2026: Grazing Boxes you can pre-book when purchasing tickets. There are two options:

• Carnivore Box — cured meats, grilled vegetables, olives, cheese, crackers, fruit, and sweet bites
• Herbivore Box — dips, frittatas, grilled vegetables, pickles, cheese, crackers, and sweet bites

Note that pre-booked grazing boxes can’t be amended and may not suit all dietary requirements.

Our tip: bring snacks and a water bottle regardless. It’s a cold winter evening with a lot of walking, and food queues can build up.

Just a reminder that there’s no BYO alcohol and no public BBQs.

Planning Your Visit to Dinos After Dark

What to Wear

This is an outdoor event in the middle of winter in Werribee. It will be cold!

Layer up properly with a warm coat, not just a jumper. Gumboots are handy for the uneven ground on the Dinos River Trail (we love our Merry People gumboots).

What to Bring to Dinos in the Dark

Here’s our list of essential items that will make your dinosaur in the dark adventure more enjoyable:

• Warm layers for everyone
• Raincoat — the event runs rain or shine
• Gumboots or sturdy shoes
• Insect repellant for any biting bugs;
• torch and/or glow sticks for extra fun. If you’re bringing a torch we recommend a torch with a red lens or with red cellophane over the lens;
• marshmallow toasting sticks and giant marshmallows. I like these retractable, reusable toasting forks and you can buy marshmallows from any supermarket;
• A picnic or at least a water bottle and snacks;
• your camera to capture your night out with the dinosaurs! 

Parking

Parking is available on site. Werribee Zoo closes at 5pm for day visitors, so aim to arrive between 5:00pm and 5:30pm when Dinos After Dark opens. If you’re also doing the Dusk Safari, arrive by 4pm.

Accessibility

The event is wheelchair and pram accessible. There is some uneven ground along the Dinos River Trail.

Is Dinos After Dark suitable for young children?

Dinos After Dark is suitable for kids of all ages. 

Some younger kids do find the animatronic dinosaurs frightening in the dark as they’re big and loud.

For children that may be scared, do the dino trail early while it’s still a bit light. We also recommend giving the dinosaurs names so they seem more friendly. Terry the T-Rex is a lot less scary than just… T-Rex.

What happens if it rains?

Dinos After Dark goes ahead, rain or shine. Just remember to pack your raincoats, umbrellas and gumboots (we love our Merry People gumboots).

Is parking available?

There’s free parking on site, though it’s best to arrive between 5pm when Melbourne Zoo closes and 5:30pm when Dinos After Dark opens, to ensure that you can find a spot easily. 

Do tickets include zoo entry during the day?

Your Dinos After Dark ticket is just for the evening experience. Daytime zoo entry needs a separate ticket.

Is the event accessible?

The event is wheelchair and pram accessible. There is some uneven ground in the Dino experience.

Can we just do the Dusk Safari?

You must have a Dinos after Dark ticket to purchase your Dusk Safari experience ticket. 

Note that all ticket holders will have their own seat on the Dusk Safari bus, regardless of their age, so there is no adults or kids prices on the Dusk Safari. 

What are the dining options?

The Macaw Cafe will be open. 

Enjoy alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at the bar or a hot barista-made coffee by the coffee cart.

To avoid hungry queues, we recommend bringing a picnic or at least some snacks to tide you over.

Free Kids Activities in Melbourne’s Inner West

1. Maribyrnong River Trail

This one is basically our family’s backyard. The trail runs along the Maribyrnong River and you can do as much or as little as you like — a short stroll to the water or a longer walk all the way to Footscray Park.

Little ones love spotting ducks and the occasional heron. Older kids can ride their bikes or scooters along the path. Pack a picnic and find a bench with a river view. It’s genuinely lovely.

Local tip: Park at Raleigh Road, Maribyrnong for easy access to the trail and a flat, pram-friendly path right along the water.

2. Cherry Lake, Altona

Cherry Lake is one of those spots that surprised me the first time I went. It’s a big foreshore lake right near Altona Beach, and it’s brilliant for birdwatching — pelicans, swans, coots, and herons are all regulars. There’s a playground on site, the path around the lake is flat and pram-friendly, and it’s the kind of place where an hour can easily turn into three.

Local tip: Combine it with a walk down to Altona Beach and you’ve got a solid half-day out without spending a cent.

3. Altona Beach

Beach days don’t have to mean the Mornington Peninsula and a two-hour drive. Altona Beach is shallow, calm, and completely family-friendly — and it’s only 20 minutes from the inner west (or an easy train ride).

The water is super gentle, which makes it perfect for littlies who are still getting their confidence in the water. There’s a playground and toilets right near the beach, and the foreshore strip has BBQs and grassy areas for a picnic.

Local tip: Go on a weekday morning in summer — it stays quiet and the water is usually like glass. Weekends get busy quickly.

4. Newport Lakes Reserve

Newport Lakes is a bit of a hidden gem — a former quarry turned into a gorgeous wetland reserve with winding paths, two lakes, and heaps of birdlife. It feels wild and adventurous, which kids absolutely love.

There’s a little playground near the entrance that even my youngest is obsessed with. The terrain is a bit hilly in spots, so bring the carrier if you have a baby.

Local tip: Bring a bird spotting chart — coots, moorhens, grebes, and cormorants are all regulars here. It turns a walk into a proper activity. In spring, there are often signets.

5. Williamstown Foreshore

The Williamstown foreshore has stunning views of the city skyline, a long stretch of grassy parkland, and a really good playground, Commonwealth Reserve, right near the water.

Older kids love watching the yachts and ferries out on the bay. Grab fish and chips from the main strip and eat them on the grass while the kids run around — that’s a perfect Sunday right there.

Local tip: The Seaworks Maritime Museum is right there if you want to add a cheap paid activity to the day. Open Wednesdays and Sundays. But the foreshore itself? Completely free and honestly just as fun.

6. Hopkins Bridge Bouldering Wall

This one catches people by surprise — there’s a free outdoor bouldering wall tucked under Hopkins Bridge in Footscray, right on the river trail. It’s been there for years and local kids absolutely smash it on weekends.

It’s suitable for kids who are old enough to climb independently and want something a bit more active than a standard playground. Parents, there is zero entry fee and zero gear required. Just show up.

Local tip: Combine it with a walk along the Maribyrnong River Trail for a solid active morning. The wall is right on the trail so it’s an easy stop on the way.

7. Yarraville Gardens

Right in the heart of Yarraville village, these gardens are beautiful and walkable from the shopping strip. There’s a creek, big old trees, and a lovely open oval where kids can kick a ball around.

It’s one of those spots where you can grab a coffee from a nearby cafe and actually sit and enjoy it while the kids play. The gardens are well-maintained and feel genuinely peaceful even when they’re busy.

Local tip: Park on the surrounding streets and walk through the village first — the Yarraville shops are great and the whole area is super pram-friendly.

8. Footscray Park

One of Melbourne’s most underrated parks, and I will die on this hill. Footscray Park has manicured gardens, wide open lawns, and spots right on the river that feel like you’re miles away from the city.

Kids can run wild on the grass while you sit on a bench and actually drink your coffee. There’s a rotunda and loads of shaded areas — perfect for summer mornings before it heats up. Note that the playground is still closed, but there’s plenty of other areas to enjoy.

If you’ve got older kids who are into bikes, Quarry Park next door is home to Melbourne’s first downhill mountain bike track in the west, with a pump track, skills park, and trails graded green for beginners and blue for intermediate riders. It’s a completely different vibe from Footscray Park but makes for a brilliant combined outing.

Local tip: Park at Footscray Park early on weekends before the footy crowds take over, then walk over to Quarry Park if the kids have energy left. There’s a picnic area, seating, and water fountains on site so you can set up and let them ride.

9. Williamstown Botanic Gardens

One of Melbourne’s oldest public gardens, right across the road from Williamstown Beach. It’s free every day, beautifully maintained, and there’s a lovely section near the back that most people walk straight past. Kids love exploring the winding paths and the big old heritage palms.

Local tip: Pair it with the Williamstown foreshore for a full morning — gardens first, then fish and chips on the grass. That’s a proper weekend right there.

10. Jawbone Flora and Fauna Reserve, Williamstown

This one feels like a proper nature escape without driving anywhere. Jawbone is a coastal wetland reserve with walking trails along the bay, mangroves, and heaps of birdlife. Kids who like getting a bit wild and exploratory will love it. It’s genuinely beautiful and very underrated.

Local tip: Go at low tide when the mudflats are exposed — that’s when the birds really put on a show.

11. Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail

This trail runs along the coast between Williamstown and Altona, past beaches, reserves, and open bay views, and it’s great for families on bikes or scooters. You don’t have to do the whole thing — even a short stretch makes for a brilliant active morning. The views of the city across the bay are pretty hard to beat.

Local tip: Start from Williamstown and ride towards Altona. Stop at Cherry Lake for a break and turn back when the kids start complaining. Works every time.

12. Wyndham Park, Werribee

This is one of those parks that genuinely delivers. Right on the Werribee River, it has an adventure playground with a 12-metre tower and a fast tunnel slide, a nature play area, a skate park, outdoor gym, and plenty of picnic spots. It’s huge, it’s well-maintained, and it’ll genuinely tire the kids out.

Local tip: Access the park from the Comben Drive carpark and walk over the river bridge to reach the playground. The bridge crossing alone is pretty exciting for little ones.

13. RAAF Museum, Point Cook

Not many people realise this one is completely free. The RAAF Museum sits on Australia’s oldest military air base and has four hangars packed with aircraft — fighter jets, helicopters, vintage planes, and bombers — alongside a walk through Australia’s aviation history from World War I to now. It’s fascinating for older kids and genuinely impressive even for the ones who aren’t that into planes.

Important: You need to book online in advance and bring photo ID for anyone over 16. It’s open Thursdays and Sundays, plus school holiday dates — check the website before you go.

Local tip: Try to time your visit for around 1pm on a Thursday or Sunday when they do a heritage aircraft flying display. It’s free and it’s worth it.

14. Keilor Park Reserve, Brimbank

If your kids are into ninja warrior-style obstacle courses, this playground is going to make their day. It’s one of the best in Brimbank and way less well-known than it deserves to be. There’s room for kids of different ages to have a go, and it’s the kind of playground where you’ll struggle to get them to leave.

Local tip: Bring a picnic — there’s good open space around the playground and it’s a lovely spot to settle in for a couple of hours.

15. Harris Reserve, Seddon

A local playground right in Seddon that’s always got a good community vibe. It’s popular with locals, which means there are usually other kids around for yours to play with, and it’s the kind of spot where you might actually get some adult conversation while they run around. Nothing fancy, just a genuinely lovely neighbourhood park.

Local tip: Walk through the Seddon village strip on the way and grab a coffee — it’s one of the nicest little strips in the inner west.

16. Victoria State Rose Garden, Werribee

More than 5,000 roses across a beautiful five-hectare garden, and it’s completely free to visit. It’s inside the Werribee Park precinct but doesn’t require entry. Go in spring when everything is in bloom and the colour and scent are just incredible. Kids might not love roses, but they do love running through open space, and there’s plenty of that too.

Local tip: It’s right next to Werribee Mansion, so you can walk the grounds and make a real day of it. Just keep in mind the Zoo itself is a separate paid attraction.

17. Werribee River Park

A riverside park with walking trails, native birdlife, and a real sense of being out in the open. It’s not a destination playground situation — it’s more of a place to just roam, explore, and let the kids have some unstructured time in nature. Wallabies have been spotted here too, which is always a win.

Local tip: Bring a bird spotting guide and make it a proper nature walk. Kids are a lot more engaged when they’re looking for something specific.

18. Altona Pier

A simple one, but a good one. The Altona Pier dates back to the early 1900s and walking out to the end gives you brilliant views of the bay and the city skyline. Kids love watching the boats and fishing lines, and it takes maybe 20 minutes — perfect for when you just need to get outside and do something easy.

Local tip: Go at sunset if you can. The views back towards the city are gorgeous and it makes for a really lovely end to a beach day.

19. Louis Joel Arts Centre, Altona

Right next to Altona Pier and Logan Reserve, the Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre has a free gallery that runs up to 26 exhibitions a year — all local and emerging artists, all free to walk in and look around. It’s a beautiful space with views of the beach and the historic Altona Homestead. The centre also runs kids art workshops (usually low-cost during school holidays), plus all sorts of community programs.

Local tip: Combine a gallery visit with a walk to Altona Beach and the pier and you’ve got a genuinely great morning out. The gallery is open Monday to Friday 9am–5pm and weekends 11am–3pm.

20. Stony Creek Backwash, Spotswood

This is an unusual one, but genuinely worth a visit for curious kids. Where Stony Creek meets the Yarra under the West Gate Bridge, there are intertidal mudflats fringed by mangroves and saltmarsh that are brilliant for birdwatching. The viewing platforms give you a great vantage point right over the habitat. It’s a bit different and kids who like nature and wildlife find it fascinating.

Local tip: The timber boardwalk section is closed, but the viewing platforms are open and that’s really where you want to be anyway. Bring binoculars if you have them.

21. Melton Library and Learning Hub

Libraries are completely free and wildly underrated as a day out with kids. Melton Library runs regular free programs for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers throughout the year — Baby Bounce, Toddler Time, and Storytime — plus school holiday programs that are always popular. The space itself is modern and welcoming, with a great kids’ section to explore.

Local tip: Bookings are essential for the preschool programs so check the City of Melton Libraries website before you go. The school holiday program fills up fast.

22. Caroline Springs Library and CS Gallery

Caroline Springs Library is a lovely space and it runs the same free early years programs as Melton — Baby Bounce, Toddler Time, and Storytime — alongside school holiday activities. What makes it a bit special is the CS Gallery inside, which shows work by local and emerging artists and is free to walk through. It’s a genuinely nice way to introduce kids to art without any pressure or price tag.

Local tip: Check the CS Gallery program online — they often run community events and interactive experiences alongside exhibitions that are completely free to attend.

If you’ve got kids aged 0–12, Scienceworks in Spotswood is one of those places you’ll visit again and again. We’ve been going for years — we’ve taken our kids when they were tiny, watched them grow up alongside the exhibitions, and even snuck back for a Friday night date. This is everything you need to know before you go.

What Is Scienceworks?

Scienceworks is Melbourne’s hands-on science and technology museum, sitting just across the West Gate Bridge from the CBD in Spotswood. It’s part of Museums Victoria — the same group behind Melbourne Museum, the Immigration Museum and IMAX — which matters a lot when we get to membership (spoiler: it’s a no-brainer for Melbourne families).

It’s not a “stand back and look” museum. Everything is made to be touched, pulled, climbed on or tested. Kids who get bored in galleries? They don’t get bored here.

The Permanent Exhibitions, by Age

For babies and toddlers (0–5): Ground Up

Ground Up is the exhibition that keeps toddlers busy while you actually breathe. It’s a dedicated space for under-5s — soft, safe and full of things to stack, build, push and explore. There are light and sound activities, simple engineering challenges and enough space for little ones to roam without you chasing them into a crowd.

It’s where we spent 90% of our first few visits. Even now, with bigger kids, the little ones still want to come back.

This exhibition space also hosts the best set of toilets available on-site. Modern, clean and comfortable with everything for babies and toddlers. This includes quiet feeding areas, baby change tables, and even those little toddler toilet seats.

For primary-aged kids: Think Ahead

Think Ahead is the exhibition for kids who want to know what the future looks like. 

Renewable energy, robotics, the way technology is changing our world — it’s big, interactive and genuinely thought-provoking. Best for primary-school-age kids and up, but the whole family will get something out of it.

For teenagers: Beyond Perception

Most museums lose teenagers somewhere between the information panels. Beyond Perception does the opposite.

It’s a permanent exhibition on the upper level — the whole floor — designed specifically for teens, and it shows. The space is dark and atmospheric, full of moving light projections and a generative soundscape that shifts as you move through it. It doesn’t feel like a museum. It feels like stepping into something.

For everyone: Sportsworks

Sportsworks is the one that gets every age group competing. It’s all about the science behind sport — reaction times, lung capacity, jumping height, wheelchair racing. You test yourself against the data, and suddenly science feels very personal.

Fair warning: you will argue about who has the faster reaction time. Plan extra time here.

It’s also a nostalgia kick for the parents. Who doesn’t remember racing Cathy Freeman at Scienceworks when they were a kid?

For everyone: The Lightning Room

The Lightning Room is exactly what it promises: a live electricity show with proper lightning, electrical coils and controlled demonstrations that will make your kids’ jaws drop. It runs at specific times during the day, and like the Planetarium, it’s an add-on cost.

Check the daily schedule when you arrive and work your visit around the Lightning Room time you want to catch. It’s a highlight — don’t miss it.

For older kids and adults: The Spotswood Pumping Station

Don’t skip the Pumping Station. It’s a heritage-listed piece of Melbourne history — a massive, beautiful piece of industrial machinery that used to pump the city’s sewage away. Kids think it’s gross and cool in equal measure.

There’s also FlushBack, an augmented reality adventure that takes you back to 1942 and puts you to work keeping the station running. You need a device and the app to do it — worth downloading before you arrive.

The Melbourne Planetarium

The Planetarium at Scienceworks is a big drawcard, and it deserves its own section.

It’s a 16-metre high dome with fully digital projection — the first in Australia to have it. Shows run throughout the day during opening hours, covering everything from the solar system to black holes to what’s in the sky tonight.

Book ahead. Planetarium sessions fill up fast, especially on weekends and school holidays. You can book online when you book your entry tickets. Don’t leave it to chance and don’t assume you’ll get seats when you arrive.

It costs extra. Planetarium entry is not included in general admission — it’s an add-on. Same goes for the Lightning Room. Budget accordingly.

Younger kids and the dark: The Planetarium goes pretty dark. Some littles love it; some find it overwhelming. If your child is sensitive to darkness or loud sounds, it might be worth having one parent take the older kids while the other stays with the baby. There’s a social story available for the Planetarium on the Museums Victoria website — worth reading before you go if you have kids with sensory sensitivities.

Shows change monthly, so check what’s on when you book. Current and upcoming sessions are listed on the Scienceworks website.

Planetarium Nights: The Adults-Only Friday Sessions

Here’s the thing about Scienceworks that most parents don’t know: Friday nights are adults only.

The Planetarium Nights sessions run every Friday from 7pm, with two screenings: one at 7:30pm (astronomy-focused, often including a live presenter-led tour of the night sky) and one at 9pm (a full-dome art film — more immersive and cinematic). You can book one or both.

The bar is open. The lights are low. It’s genuinely a great date night.

We’ve done it a handful of times and it never gets old — there’s something about lying back in a dome watching the universe explained above you that feels special every time. Tickets run around $25–$45. Book well in advance for popular shows, because they sell out.

The Temporary Exhibition Space

One of the best things about Scienceworks is that there’s always a reason to go back.

Every six to twelve months, the temporary exhibition space gets a completely new show. These are premium, ticketed exhibitions — the kind of thing that tours internationally and lands in Melbourne for a limited run. Past shows have covered everything from colour and light to black holes to the science of flight. They’re usually designed for all ages, with enough depth to keep adults genuinely interested and enough hands-on activity to keep kids busy.

Because they change regularly, they’re also the best argument for a Museums Victoria membership — members get discounted entry, so if you visit even once a year for a special exhibition, the membership pays for itself faster.

Before any visit, it’s worth checking the Scienceworks website to see what’s currently on. 

Sometimes the temporary exhibition lines up perfectly with something your kids are into at school. Sometimes it’s just something brilliant you wouldn’t have found otherwise.

Either way, it’s never the same place twice.

Little Kids Day In

If you’ve got a child under five, Little Kids Day In is worth putting in the calendar.

It runs once a month and takes over the whole museum for the day — but with no school groups. That alone is a game-changer. The place is busy, but it’s busy with prams and toddlers instead of Year 5 excursion groups, which makes the whole experience calmer and easier to manage.

Each Little Kids Day In is a STEM-based playdate, with dedicated zones set up across the museum — Tiny Tinkerers, Bub Hub, Tot Spot, Kinder Clubhouse and Book Nook — plus activities inside the Lightning Theatre and Planetarium. 

Each day has a theme, so the activities, shows and performances change every time. We’ve seen live music, craft, hands-on science sessions and more. It’s a great excuse to visit even if you’ve been recently.

Standard entry prices apply — which means little kids are free and members get in at no cost. Check the Scienceworks website for the date of the next one and what the theme is. 

Some sessions inside the Planetarium and Lightning Theatre require a free ticket that you grab on the day, so arrive early if those are on your list.

It’s also just a genuinely lovely way to spend a Monday morning with a toddler.

Scienceworks School Holiday Programs

Holiday programs usually include a mix of free inclusions and paid extras. Check the Scienceworks website in the weeks before each school holiday period — they announce programs pretty close to the dates.

Birthday Parties

You can book a birthday party at Scienceworks. The venue has spaces for kids’ parties and the environment basically does the work for you — the exhibitions are the entertainment.

It’s worth contacting them directly for current packages and availability. Booking as early as possible is the move for popular dates, especially in school-holiday windows.

Museums Victoria Membership: Is It Worth It?

Short answer: yes, if you’re a Melbourne family.

A Museums Victoria household membership covers 2 adults and up to 6 kids (under 16) and gives you free general entry to Scienceworks, Melbourne Museum and the Immigration Museum for the full year. Since kids under 16 are free anyway, you’re essentially paying for adult admission — and it pays for itself very quickly if you visit a couple of times.

On top of free entry, members get:

• Discounts on special and touring exhibitions
• 10% off at the Museum Shop and cafés
• Discounts on Planetarium and Lightning Room tickets

If you visit Scienceworks even twice a year, the maths work out. If you visit regularly — and once you have the membership, you will — it’s one of the best value family memberships in Melbourne.

Getting There

By car

Scienceworks is at 2 Booker Street, Spotswood. From the CBD, take the M1 to Hudsons Road. Parking is on-site and cashless: $5/day Monday–Thursday, $8/day Friday–Sunday (via card or the EasyPark app). On weekends it can fill up early — Grazeland is nearby and shares some of the traffic.

Limited street parking is available on Hudsons Road and Simcock Avenue if the car park is full.

By train

Take the Werribee or Williamstown line to Spotswood Station, then it’s about a 10-minute walk to Scienceworks. The walk is flat, has kerb ramps at every crossing and is pram-friendly.

By ferry (our favourite)

The Westgate Punt is a passenger ferry service that crosses the Yarra River between Westgate Landing (Lorimer Street, Port Melbourne) and Spotswood Jetty. The crossing itself takes about 5 minutes.

From Spotswood Jetty it’s roughly a 10-minute walk to Scienceworks. On weekends the ferry runs on-demand. Check the Westgate Punt website for the current timetable before you go.

This is genuinely the most fun way to arrive — kids love it, the crossing is short enough not to be boring and it makes the whole outing feel like a proper adventure.

You can also catch ferries from Southbank via Williamstown Ferries as another option.

By bike

Scienceworks is accessible via cycling routes along the Maribyrnong River, Hyde Street, the Yarra River and Hudsons Road. Bike parking is at the front of the building.

Accessibility at Scienceworks

Scienceworks is one of Melbourne’s most accessible family venues. It’s autism-friendly and provides sensory maps, social stories, quiet times and visual guides online before your visit. There are tactile indicators in the elevator, and exhibitions include components for visitors with vision impairments.

The main entrance is flat with no step. The school entrance is stairs only, but the main entrance has full lift access. Prams are no problem throughout the venue.

Practical Tips Before You Go

Book ahead. Buy your entry tickets online and add Planetarium and/or Lightning Room at the same time. You’ll avoid disappointment, especially on weekends.

Arrive at opening. Scienceworks opens at 10 am. Getting there early means you beat the school groups and get the most out of popular exhibitions before they fill up.

Check what’s on. Rotating and special exhibitions change regularly. The Scienceworks website shows current and upcoming exhibitions — worth a look before each visit so you know what’s new.

Feed them before or after. There’s a café on-site for snacks and lunch, but factoring in food before or after your visit takes some pressure off the day.

Factor in more time than you think. You’re not getting out in 90 minutes. Plan for at least half a day, and a full day if you want to see everything.
