The Alfa Romeo GT Coupe:

More so than any of the other great offerings from the Big Three, the 3rd generation Plymouth Barracuda came to epitomize the muscle car look with its take on the iconic “coke bottle” design.
To compete with the Ford Mustang Boss 302 and Chevrolet Camaro Z28 in the Trans-Am racing series, Plymouth designed this special edition AAR (All American Racing) Barracuda with a purpose-built 340 cube V8 topped with three 2-barrel carburetors, heavy duty suspension and brakes, side pipe exhaust, a unique ram air hood, and some visual changes in terms of stripes and spoilers.
The result was a factory-built race car designed as much for cornering as it was for churning out tire smoke. And somehow Plymouth managed to merge all this engineering together into the aesthetic high watermark for all other muscle cars to strive for. It might not have been the fastest of them all, but it definitely got more than its fair share of head turns, like any proper muscle car should.

The Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 is a mid-engine grand touring car produced by Bugatti headquarters in Château St Jean in Molsheim (Alsace, France). It is named after French racing driver Pierre Veyron, who won the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1939 while racing for the original Bugatti company. 133 examples of the Veyron are known to have been built since production began. There will be a total of 300 built. All the Veyron editions contribute to the 300 being built. The editions that are contributing are the Veyron, Veyron 16.4, Pur Sang, Hermes Edition, Sang Noir, Targa, Vincero, and the Bleu Cenetaire. It will be replaced with the Grand Sport, which is essentially a Veyron Convertible

Development of this vehicle began with the 1999 EB 16/4 "Veyron" concept car, which itself had a chassis based on that of the Bugatti 18/3 Chiron concept car. It was similar in design and appearance to the final Veyron production car. One major difference was the EB 18/4's use of a W18 engine with three banks of six cylinders. The Veyron's chief designer was Hartmut Warkuss, and the exterior was designed by Jozef Kabaň of Volkswagen, rather than Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign, who had handled the three prior Bugatti concepts.

The then – Volkswagen Group chairman Ferdinand Piëch announced the Veyron at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show. It was promised to be the fastest, most powerful and most expensive car in history. Instead of the W18, it would use a VR6/WR8-style W16 engine. First seen in the 1999 Bentley Hunaudières concept car, the W16 would have four turbochargers and produce a quoted (metric) 1001 horsepower (see engine section for details on the power output). Top speed was promised at 407 km/h (253 mph), and the price was announced at €1 million.

Development continued throughout 2001 and the EB 16/4 Veyron was promoted to "advanced concept" status. In late 2001, Bugatti announced that the car, officially called the "Bugatti Veyron 16.4", would go into production in 2003.

Piëch retired that year as chairman of the Volkswagen Group and was replaced by Bernd Pischetsrieder. The new chairman promptly sent the Veyron back to the drawing board for major revisions. Neumann was replaced as Bugatti president by Thomas Bscher in December 2003, and substantial modifications were made to the Veyron under the guidance of a former VW engineer, Bugatti Engineering chief Wolfgang Schreiber.

The Veyron costs €1,100,000 (net price without taxes);[citation needed] prices vary by exchange rates and local taxes (like value added taxes). Prices for the UK or the US are over £880,000, or around $1,400,000. The car is often compared to the Concorde as a feat of technology.

SEs have a firmer suspension and, like the Hybrid, specific interior and exterior trim. A split-folding rear seat is standard except on SE, which has a center pass-through. Leather upholstery is standard on the XLE V6 and optional for automatic transmission equipped SE, 4-cylinder XLE, and Hybrid models. A navigation system with wireless cell-phone link is optional for SE, XLE, and Hybrid models, as are heated seats. A keyless-entry and -starting system is included on the Hybrid and is available for the V6 XLE.

The 2009 Cadillac CTS lineup gains a revived CTS-V high-performance model. The CTS-V is powered by a 6.2-liter supercharged version of the Chevrolet Corvette's V8 engine. It produces 556 hp and is mated to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The CTS-V comes standard with GM's Magnetic Ride Control suspension, which automatically adjusts firmness within two driver-selectable modes. GM also is offering its "Performance Traction Management" system on the CTS-V. This system is similar to GM's Stabilitrak antiskid system, but it is set to aid performance in spirited driving. The V also gets an upgraded interior that includes available Recaro-brand seats with 14-way adjustment and a suede-like microfiber wrap for the shift lever and steering wheel. The rest of the 2009 Cadillac CTS lineup is largely unchanged following its 2008 redesign. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available on all but the CTS-V. Base CTS models have a 263-hp 3.6-liter V6 engine. Uplevel Direct Injection models have a 304-hp 3.6-liter V6. Both engines team with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. Available features include steering-linked headlamps and keyless entry and ignition. A navigation system is optional.

The 2009 BMW 3-Series sedans and wagons get slightly freshened interior and exterior styling. Also, for the first time in North America, these premium compact cars will be available with a diesel engine. The 3-Series offers 2-door coupes and convertibles, as well as 4-door sedans and wagons. Convertibles have a power-retractable hard top. The 2009 3-Series model lineup consists of the following: Entry-level 328, mid-line 335, and high-performance M3. Depending on body style, the 328i is available with rear-wheel drive or with BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive. It's powered by a 230-hp 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine. Also depending on body style, the 335i is available with rear- or all-wheel drive. Those models are powered by a turbocharged 300-hp version of the 3.0-liter 6-cylinder. New for 2009 is the rear-drive 335d. It has a 265-hp 3.0-liter turbodiesel 6-cylinder that is emissions legal in all 50 states. M3 models use a 414-hp 4.0-liter V8.

All 2009 BMW 3-Series gasoline engines are available with a 6-speed manual transmission. Available on the 328i and 335i and standard on the 335d is a 6-speed automatic. The M3 is available with a 7-speed automatic. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and front side airbags. Head-protecting tubular side airbags that cover both seating rows are standard on all but convertibles. Standard on convertibles are rollover bars designed to deploy from the rear headrests if sensors detect an impending tip.

A big little-car company takes another stab at a midsize sedan, and this one’s all theirs. Kizashi--not its real name--promises a sporty persona and available all-wheel drive, but Camry, Accord, and Malibu probably have nothing to fear.

What We Know About the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi

Suzuki is a rising star on the world automotive stage. It’s the top-seller of the “K-Class” micro cars popular in its native Japan. It has a strong and growing presence in Europe. It commands a whopping 55 percent of the booming Indian car market. And its global business spans 192 markets and 2.4 million total sales in 2007. In the U.S., though, Suzuki is a niche player despite more than 25 years on the scene. Though it’s built a strong reputation with motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, boat engines, and other products, the brand still struggles to make serious sales inroads with cars and trucks.

That may be about to change. Suzuki’s new SX4 compact cars are off to a decent start, mainly because they’re decently stingy with a $4 gallon of gas. And unlike the underwhelming Esteem and Aerio of yore, the SX4 is appealing enough to earn Consumer Guide’s Best Buy ribbon for 2008.

Now Suzuki is revisiting the midsize sedan after flopping with the 2004-06 Verona, a disappointing shortcut designed and built by GM-Daewoo in South Korea. Suzuki sees the U.S. as its “next great frontier” market, believing it can--and should--make far more money here, hence this new stab at a mainstream car with potential yearly sales in the hundreds of thousands. Never mind that the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi will have the tough task of wooing buyers away from perennial class favorites Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. This big little-car company is determined to be as much a power in America as it is elsewhere. We’re frankly not sanguine about the prospects in light of past performance, but you gotta admire their pluck.

Already announced for a calendar-2010 debut, the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi will be a somewhat toned-down version of the Kizashi 3 concept unveiled at the March 2008 New York Auto Show. Kizashi is Japanese for “preview,” so a new title is expected for the showroom model. Unlike the Verona, this design is entirely Suzuki’s own, built on a new platform that may host other future vehicles.

If the concept is any guide, the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi will be 8-10 inches shorter than today’s Accord and Camry, but will ride a similarly long wheelbase and stretch 2-3 inches wider. The same comparisons hold for Chevrolet’s new and in-demand Malibu, another inevitable rival. Suzuki says Kizashi styling is meant to evoke “the physical superiority and dignity of a world-class athlete,” but we see mainly cribbed elements of Acura RL, Audi A6, Mazda 6, and several other cars. Kizashi is attractive, just not knockout original. Incidentally, one source predicts the concept’s roofline will be lifted a couple of inches and its 21-inch wheels replaced by more sensible shoes, probably 17s or 18s. Just so you know.

The 2011 Suzuki Kizashi will offer front-wheel drive and a choice of two powerteams. One comprises a new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and a 5-speed automatic transmission. The other mates a 3.6-liter V6 with a 6-speed paddle-shift automatic and optional all-wheel drive. The 4-cylinder engine is said to be all-Suzuki, too. The V6, however, is based on the so-called “high feature” General Motors engine used in the Malibu and Suzuki’s own XL7 midsize SUV. It’s a vestige of the longtime GM-Suzuki alliance that was dissolved in March 2006 after delivering the Korean-built Verona and the soon-to-depart Suzuki Reno and Forenza compact cars.

Suzuki isn’t talking other Kizashi specifics just now, though it does boast of “strong, refined urban performance” and structural “weight- and space-saving technology that evolved from the lessons learned by Suzuki’s motorcycle and WRC [World Rally Championship] development teams.” With spin like this, you might think the Kizashi will offer the driving spirit of a Suzi bike with four wheels and all the comforts--which is doubtless what’s intended.

But let’s move on. Logically, the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi would include modern family car must-haves such as a four-wheel independent suspension, antilock brakes (with four-wheel discs likely standard at least for V6s), front and curtain side airbags, air conditioning, and power windows/locks/mirrors. But we’d also expect a no-cost navigation system, as announced for 2009-model SX4s. We haven’t heard about options yet, but the list will probably show rear-obstacle detection, radar-based cruise control, leather upholstery for 4-cylinder models, and the obligatory high-power sound system.

Summing up, the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi could be a worthy new choice among midsize family sedans. It might even be the new class “driver’s car” by dint of what the company terms a “‘super sport’ identity, a core component of the Suzuki brand DNA.” Then again, it could just as easily be another Suzuki car that over-promises and under-delivers both on the road and the sales chart. We’ll keep you posted.

With the arguable exception of optional all-wheel drive, we’ve heard nothing so far that suggests the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi will have any game-changing innovations. But we hope to be proven wrong. After all, this is a company with considerable engineering skill and experience, as most Suzuki motorcycle riders will attest, though you’d scarcely guess that from past Suzuki cars and trucks.

Buying Advice for the 2011 Suzuki Kizashi

Rocketing gas prices now have many buyers switching to 4-cylinder cars, so the base Kizashi will probably get most of the sales emphasis. Look for modest opening-day incentives if the national economy continues to sour. This is the largest, most ambitious car Suzuki has done since building its first four-wheeler back in 1955, and the company obviously expects great things from it. So do we, and so should you, especially given the stiff class competition and the also-ran nature of most previous Suzuki-built cars.

2011 Suzuki Kizashi Release Date: Suzuki promises to deliver a “Kizashi-influenced sport sedan to North American dealers by 2010.” Some sources take that to mean an early calendar-year sales start for a 2011 model.

2011 Suzuki Kizashi First Test Drive: The above timing suggests media previews will be held in late summer or early fall of 2009.

2011 Suzuki Kizashi Prices: One source predicts base prices in the $21,000-$28,000 range, but final figures will depend on what level of standard content Suzuki chooses and, with the Japan sourcing, the dollar-to-yen valuation on announcement day.

Porsche 904 Carrera GTS (1963-1964) was no slacker in every department. Coming from a premier sports car manufacturer it's got what it takes to compete on the track - but the street version is even more exciting, bringing these sexy curves to the highway. FORESTER: The Forester has always toed the line between crossover SUV and wagon; for 2009 it seems to have finally chosen sides with a clear move into the SUV camp. The new Forester is longer and taller and features standard all-wheel-drive and both turbocharged and normally aspirated versions of Subaru's venerable 2.5 liter "boxer" engine.

IMPREZA: The new Impreza 2.5GT (photo) gets the 224 horsepower turbocharged engine from last year's WRX coupled to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the base-model 2.5i gains standard electronic stability control and four-wheel disc brakes, and a sunroof has been added to the 2.5i Premium package.

IMPREZA WRX: The WRX gets a boost in power: 265 horsepower (up from 224) and 244 lb-ft of torque (up from 226). A new STI-inspired body kit, 17" grey-painted wheels shod with wider summer-only tires, and new seat upholstery further differentiate the WRX from last year's model; the suspension has also been re-tuned for better handling. Officially, the WRX now comes exclusively with a manual transmission; the automatic WRX is now known as the Impreza 2.5 GT (see IMPREZA, above).

IMPREZA WRX STI: Unchanged, including the price.

LEGACY: The six-cylinder 3.0R model, introduced last year, has been split into two models. The 3.0R Limited offers similar equipment to last year's 3.0R, while the 3.0R Base comes with less standard stuff and a price tag about $5k lower than last year's car. Electronic stability control is now offered on all Legacy models except the 2.5 GT with manual transmission. All models except the basic 2.5i get a Harmon-Kardon audio system, Limited models get dual-zone climate control as standard, and steering wheel audio controls are standard on Limited and 3.0R Base trims.

OUTBACK: Electronic stability control is now standard on all Outbacks, and all models except the 2.5i get a Harmon-Kardon stereo. Limited models get dark-tinted privacy glass and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. The L. L. Bean Edition has been pink-slipped, replaced by the Outback Limited.
TRIBECA: Aside from a new paint color (Ruby Red Metallic), the Tribeca is unchanged.
UNNAMED SPORTS CAR: A new rear-drive compact sports car, developed in conjunction with Toyota, will be unveiled in 2010.

MARINER: A 171 horsepower 2.5 liter four-cylinder engine replaces last year's 2.3 as the base engine; the Mariner Hybrid uses an Atkinson-cycle version of the new engine. The optional 3.0 liter V6 has been updated for more power and better fuel economy. New low-rolling-resistance tires, electric (in place of engine-driven) power steering, refined aerodynamics and a 6-speed automatic transmission (which replace last year's 4-speed) also help improve fuel economy. Ford's EasyFuel capless refueling system is now standard, and the suspension has been tweaked to improve ride comfort and handling.

MILAN: Electronic stability control is now standard across the line. Milan Premiere models get ambient interior lighting, SIRIUS satellite radio, and an automatic transmission as standard equipment. A new VOGA package (photo; Mercury says VOGA is Spanish for "fashionable and trend setting") includes white or black paint with chrome wheels and trim, cashmere-colored leather seats and door inserts, "Carbon Cyber Grey" interior trim, and VOGA badging on seats, body, wheels and floor mats. A new version of the Milan, including the long-awaited hybrid version, is coming in 2009 as a 2010 model.

MOUNTAINEER: No changes.

SABLE: No changes.

SMALL CAR: Mercury will get a new small car in 2010. The name and specifics have not been announced, but it's easy to guess that it'll be based on the Ford Focus.

he 2009 Chevrolet Malibu is largely unchanged following its 2008 redesign. This is the smaller of Chevy's two midsize sedans. It shares its basic design with the Pontiac G6, Saturn Aura, and Saab 9-3. LS, LT, and LTZ trim levels remain unchanged. A gas/electric Hybrid model is also available. LS and LT have a standard 169-hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that teams with a 4-speed automatic transmission. A 6-speed automatic for the 4-cylinder is available on the LT and standard on the LTZ. LT and LTZ are available with a 252-hp 3.6-liter V6 that teams with the 6-speed automatic.

The Hybrid combines the 4-cylinder gas engine with an electric motor. The sole transmission is a 4-speed automatic. The hybrid system can turn off the gas engine while at a stop, but the car cannot accelerate solely on electric power. No plug-in charging is required. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. New for 2009 is a wireless cell phone link. Seventeen-inch wheels are now standard on the LS and Hybrid versus the 16s previously offered.

Audi’s A6 3.0-litre TDI has won ‘Best Luxury Car over $57,000’ at the annual Australia’s Best Cars awards.
This is the third consecutive year that Audi has won ‘Best Luxury Car’, with the Audi A8 taking top honours in 2003 and 2004.

Audi’s managing director, Joerg Hofmann, says the award is particularly significant as it is the first time that a diesel passenger car has won an Australia’s Best Cars award.

“The country’s top luxury vehicle has an Audi TDI engine. This is very significant for our company as we will continue to introduce new diesel models into Australia in 2006. By the end of next year we will have at least one TDI engine in every major Audi model line from A3 to A8,” Mr Hofmann said.

“Gone are the days when a customer should be concerned about driving a diesel passenger car. With more than 15 years of experience with TDI technology, Audi is leading the way with luxury passenger cars in Australia.

“This award is a clear indication of how the experts view Audi’s A6 with its advanced 3.0-litre TDI engine,” Mr Hofmann said.

According to the Australia’s Best Cars judging panel, the Audi A6 TDI leaves a lasting impression on performance with terrific thrust from low revs and an automatic that masters the diesel's characteristics cleanly and capably.

The other advantage is fuel economy where this Audi has an official combined figure of 8.5litres/ 100km and the company’s effort in A6 design and functionality is laudable. The A6 demands recognition for its safety, security, comfort, ergonomics and build quality. Its space and practicality also are of a high standard, according to the Australia’s Best Car judges.

The Audi A4 stands out for its driving pleasure and superior technology, exciting styling and a level of luxury that even satisfies the demands made in the top car class. The 220 bhp (162 kW) 2.0 TFSI engine already used successfully in the special Audi A4 DTM Edition model is now also being offered for the production version of the Audi A4.

Developed by quattro GmbH, this petrol direct injection engine with turbocharger delivers 20 bhp more than the 2.0 TFSI unit already available, and its torque has increased from 280 to 300 Nm. This power unit sees quattro GmbH continuing the tradition of power-enhanced 4-cylinder turbo engines. This increase in horsepower has been achieved by selective modifications such as new pistons, a modified turbocharger and a suitably adapted engine management system.

The Audi A4 2.0 TFSI with 220 bhp engine is distinguished visually from other A4 models by perforated brake discs at the front wheels and black anodised exhaust tailpipes. It can be ordered from early February 2006. The saloon is available starting at €32,000, the Avant at €33,600.

Audi is the first manufacturer in the world to combine petrol direct injection with turbocharging in the spheres of both motor racing and volume production. The 2.0 TFSI’s exceptionally broad torque plateau permits a fuel-efficient driving style on the one hand, and also means that a light press of the accelerator pedal is all that is needed to produce considerable thrust and a spontaneous unleashing of power.

Although Fourtitude is a daily read for us and all other Audi lovers out there, George Achorn is even better in his "Fourword", a column dedicated to his personal thoughts on the Audi brand and models.
In his current "Fourword" he is writing about the idea of bringing an Audi A3 Hybrid.
There’s no denying that the Toyota Prius has garnered its fair share of attention. Toyota sells all they can build, while the car’s owners group has become a rather enthusiastic following despite the Prius’ relatively frugal equipment and uninspiring teardrop shaped packaging. Such success begs the question- could technology-driven Audi do a small hybrid just as well, if not better, and in a more stylish package?

The Q7 Hybrid is an interesting prospect, but I think I have an idea for a more frugal offering. It would be one that showcases Audi’s own core competencies and could theoretically be built at a reasonable cost, given it would use an existing platform… that of the A3 5-door.

Should Audi build something like an A3 Hybrid, I for one would be there in line to put down my deposit. Ingolstadt has become quite proficient at being strong in performance like their rivals from Munich, but Audi’s brand identity is synonymous with technology and their well-known motto ‘Vorsprung Durch Technik’ makes the brand more credible in its presentation of a TDI Hybrid laden with technology like all-wheel drive and DSG or even more gluttonous options like Navigation plus or alcantara suede seats. Near as I can tell, such an offering would be right in line with the unique and out-of-the-box thinking target customer Audi has in mind with the A3. It would be a halo car with a conscience.

The Volkswagen Golf MkVI has been awarded the 2009 World Car of the Year title.

The WCOTY jury consists of 59 eminent motoring writers from 25 countries, including Telegraph Motoring's Mike Rutherford.
They observed that: "The new Golf VI feels more expensive than other family hatches, thanks to its solid build and high quality cabin. Customers get a choice of nothing less than six engines including the punchy and efficient 158hp, 1.4-litre TSI unit that features both a turbo and supercharger.

"The Golf is also available with the firm's new 2.0-litre common-rail diesel engine, developing either 108 or 138hp. It goes without saying that choosing between the slick six-speed manual and superb DSG twin-clutch gearbox can be difficult. Sitting on an outstanding chassis, the VW is more refined than its rivals, especially when highway cruising. Wind, road and engine noise are kept to a minimum, making the Golf a relaxing long distance companion."

The top three contenders for 2009 World Car of the Year title were the Ford Fiesta, Toyota iQ and the Golf. The other eight contenders in the shortlist were the Audi A4, BMW 7-series, Citroen C5, Fiat 500, Honda Jazz, Jaguar XF, Mazda6 and Nissan GT-R.

Receiving the award at the New York International Show, Stefan Jacoby, president of VW of America, said: "The Golf is an iconic nameplate for Volkswagen and is known throughout the world. The Golf is Volkswagen's best selling nameplate with more than 26 million units sold in more than 120 countries."

Other categories included World Performance Car (won by the Nissan GT-R, Car Design of the Year (Fiat 500) and World Green Car (Honda's FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell car).

Finalists for the Performance Car category included the Audi RS6, BMW 135i, Corvette ZR1, Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG, Mitsubishi Evo X, Porsche 911 Carrera and Subaru Impreza WRX STI.

In the World Car Design of the Year category, the jurors were assisted by four highly respected world design experts. A similar process was applied to select the World Green Car award, a panel of three experts suggesting a shortlist on which the jurors voted.
