Yesterday I revisited Confit Frech Bistro to do some additional food photography as well as some supporting detail photography. The work will be used on their website and their marketing collateral. Among the reasons that I was happy to get back out to Confit for some work is... it also encourages me to get back out to Confit for dinner. Mrs. Wenger and I had a truly wonderful time the last time we went.

Help-Portrait

Today I was lucky enough to have my schedule fall into place so that I could take part in something that I really wanted to do, but didn't think my schedule would allow. The project was Help-Portrait. The official website can be found at Help-Portrait.com. The notion was to go out into the world and find someone who could benefit in a small or great way from having their portrait taken. Then take their portraits, make prints and deliver them. All for free. All in the name of helping out, in some small way through the skills we have as photographers, another person.

Fortunately for me (as I was very late to the party), arrangements had already been set by some photographers to work with groups at the Bethesda Mission men's and women's shelters. I walked away with a lot of great photographs but agreed not to share them here for the sake of privacy of those photographed. I also walked away with respect for these gentlemen who are trying to put their lives together despite the rough hand dealt to them by society. Here are some photos of the group of photographers who also were part of the project.

APC Conference

This was my second year photographing the Association of Pennsylvania Constructors annual trade show and conference. This is a conference for the guys who build our highways and byways. Many of the attendees are engineers and managers of construction companies. Also in attendance are many of PennDOTs managers which allows new policies, proceedings and bureaucratic procedures to be openly discussed.

PRA Awards Banquet

This was my second year photographing the Pennsylvania Restaurant Association's Annual Awards Banquet. This year I was asked to setup a makeshift studio to do headshots of the various members before the actual banquet started. A sampling of those headshots are here followed by shots from the banquet itself.

St. Johns Parish Day School

Yesterday I had the opportunity to work with Deb Bates Schrott founder of Bates Creative Group to photograph the St. Johns Parish Day School in Elicott City, MD. This was a fun shoot highlighting the diversity of both the student body and the learning experience. Thanks a lot to Deb for lining up the shoot. Auditorium Seating

I was contracted to photograph a new auditorium seating installation by the company that sold the seats to the Carlisle School District. The back of the auditorium wasn't very picturesque and the seating was the main focus so light was limited to just the seating.

Commercial Roof Trussing

Today I photographed the construction of St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church for All-Span. They constructed the truss systems and needed some artistic documentation of the installation process for their website and other marketing collateral.

This one took some patience as it ended up being several weeks from when I was told the trusses were being placed until it actually happened.

A week of mentoring young minds

Today marks the end of a week of mentoring children as part of the Harrisburg Parks and Recreation Department's Photography For Kids Camp. The camp is a collaboration between the Parks and Recs department and the Harrisburg Camera Club and was the brain child of club member Charlie Smith.

This was the second year in a row for the camp and my second year as a mentor. Its a lot of fun getting out with these young people and it is also encouraging at the quality of their work by the end of the week.

Sushi and Dim Sum

Today I had the pleasure of my first dim sum experience. I was at Mitaka taking pictures for Fly Magazine and they asked for some food shots. Even though I had a crock pot of vegetable soup ready at home, I couldn't help but bring home some of this food. It looked too good - and the vegetable soup will keep. Right?

This is the dim sum. The dumplings were especially delicious. The metal cans are the steaming vessels.

Rhea Silvia

Rhea Silvia was the mythical greek mother of Romulus and Remus the twins who founded the city of Rome. Rhea Silvia the band is made up of Jason Barshinger, Michael Adams and Cory McClain. A power trio of central Pennsylvania musicians who I had the opportunity to shoot yesterday while recording their next CD. This was a real fun shoot. According to their MySpace page they are "kinda like a shot of hard rock that you can enjoy with a lime..." I caught up with them at Seventh Wave Recording Studio with the more than gracious host and producer Jason Rubal. The guys were proud that they were in the studio again laying down some tracks. Therefore I wanted to try to emphasize the recording studio and fit them into it. Below are the results with the final shot being a safe final image. Hope you like 'em.

York Swing Dance Club

I had the opportunity yesterday to photograph the York Swing Dance Club. I had never heard of the place before. It was a cool little storefront on Market Street in York that hosts swing dances on Friday nights. They are actually setup as a non-profit and have a small lounge and a large dance hall. This place was a lot of fun and had patrons of all ages from high school kids up to retirees. Every Friday before the dance starts (which goes from 9pm-12pm) they do a 1 hour beginner class which is included in your regular $6.00 admission.

In this shot and the next I used 2 gelled remote triggered flashes (one pink and one yellow) to add some color to the room and emphasize the silhouettes. Doesn't it look like fun?

In this one I let a longer exposure blur some passing cars to add a sense of motion to the image.

Just Some Fun

Today I went out and had a little photography fun with fellow photographer Paul Kruis. This image is one of the byproducts of the day. The main subject (other than Paul) is a hand painted Zane Kesey (son of Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test fame Ken Kesey) mailbox. Photography really is an enjoyable journey for me (but nothing like the journey of the Further bus), and I try to let my enjoyment show up in the final work. Associated Pennsylvania Contractors Convention

Yesterday I photographed the APC (Associated Pennsylvania Contractors) annual convention. The event was a lot of (predominantly) engineering-type men in business suits listening to the state of road construction in Pennsylvania.

As part of the convention they brought in Stacy Allison. Stacy was the first American woman to reach the peak of Mount Everest. She was a dynamic speaker with a motivational message that was entertaining to listen to. I'd recommend her to anyone who comes across this page while considering hiring her as a speaker.

In the picture above Stacy is explaining the two jugs that when on the mountain you go to sleep with, and why you DON'T want to confuse them.

The convention had a number of smaller seminars with speakers on various issues concerning road builders in Pennsylvania. Above is one such speaker.

Along with photographing the various speakers and moderators I photographed various members of the audience.

The trade show portion of the convention had several food sponsors. These booths were photographed with each company's staff.

Wade Nance - Blues Guitarist

Today I photographed Wade Nance for Fly Magazine. Wade is a talented blues guitarist and one heck of a nice guy. I caught up with him at the Fort Hunter Barn during a Susquehanna Folk Music Society meeting and jam session. The first three pictures are of Wade after the jam session. The others were taken while waiting for the session to finish. Just to highlight Wade's broad range of talent, he wasn't sporting the guitar for the jam, but rather a violin (errr... uh... fiddle I guess it would be).

Now that is one heavy duty harmonica.
