An update on our physical store plans

It's been about six months now since we closed our store in the East Village, and we wanted to give you guys an update on our plans for the future.

As you probably know, we chose not to renew our lease on our old store, because after three years there we'd learned what it takes to run a successful physical location and that one just wasn't going to work in the long run. While we've always been profitable overall, our web site always subsidized our physical store. When all profit comes from one side of the business and the other's actually a drain, then obviously a change is needed.

We've said since then that we'll open a new store once we find a location that we're pretty sure can stand on its own. That's our requirement - the store has to make money by itself, with a full staff. And that's not easy to do in New York City, with its high fixed costs that need to be paid whether we sell anything or not (things like rent and utilities). This isn't mainstream fashion, so the customer base is still small and covering those fixed costs is a challenge.

We've looked at various locations and have even thought of totally different ways of doing business. Stores that sell this fashion in Japan (including some of the big brand stores) don't always operate like traditional ground floor always-open retail walk-in shops. The reasons for that may not always be obvious but we've been looking at those things to see if there's anything we can learn from them. For one thing, locations like that are always a lot cheaper than ground floor retail locations.

It may seem like it's taking us a long time, and we wish we could just open a store again right now. But the good news is that the main reason we aren't is just that we're making a lot more money now, being online only. So our business is actually really healthy, and you don't need to worry about losing us as an outlet to buy your favorite clothes. There's no need for us to rush into things. We didn't really know if you guys would stick with us once we closed our store, but you did and we're thankful for that! We're actually selling more online now than we did when the store was open.

We miss seeing our customers in person more and we also really miss our shop staff - they make running this store fun, and it's not the same for us without them right now.

In the meantime, we're still looking at real estate and we're also talking to potential investors and even potential franchisees. If you're interested in either of those opportunities, drop us a line! (Serious inquiries only, please.) We are a profitable business with a well-known name and experience doing this, so if you think you'd like to potentially open your own location with our help, we're listening.

In the end, this is all really a roundabout way of telling you a new store opening is not imminent. We've successfully reset, though, and are now a healthier business than ever, so hopefully we can find a good way to really move forward towards the future soon. In the meantime, it's business as usual online.

Misako Aoki x Midori Fukasawa visit Baby, the Stars Shine Bright's Harajuku store with us!

Last month during our visit to Japan, we got to see Baby, the Stars Shine Bright's new flagship store in Harajuku and we brought Misako Aoki and Midori Fukasawa with us to show it to you! Here we're giving you the first look at the video we shot with them. In it, Misako and Midori create their own coordinate, and we'll be selling that coordinate in our web store soon! This video will soon be on our Baby, the Stars Shine Bright collection page and will serve as a new introduction to the brand for our customers. As always with our videos, you can open it up full-screen and watch in HD.

Baby's new store is right on one of Harajuku's main streets - if any of you have been to Laforet Harajuku, it is just down the road.

We've returned from another successful trip to Japan! Some of you may have seen our photo on Facebook (and Twitter) of Misako and Midori during our video shoot with them - here's another one!

We're putting together a new video introduction for our Baby, the Stars Shine Bright collection page starring both of them - these take a little time to edit, so just be patient! It'll hopefully be worth the wait. They are sooooooooo cute together.

We'll also be posting some new reserve items from both BTSSB and Victorian maiden hopefully today, and we'll have an update on our store situation to post soon too (no real news, but a lot of people have been asking about it, so we'll go into a bit more detail about what's happening).

We're also going to be receiving new stock from BTSSB over the next couple days, so look forward to that too!

Important Web Store update: Japan visit and shipping suspension from April 10th - 20th

It's that time of year again - some of you may remember from past years that we usually take an all-hands journey to Japan once a year, and that's happening for 10 days starting next week. (The photo above is from our visit there last year.) What does this mean to you?

1) There will be no shipping of orders from April 10th to April 20th - if you'd like something shipped before then, order now!

2) The web store itself will remain open for ordering. Orders will be shipped after the 20th, in the order they were placed. If you want something on our site, don't wait - it could still sell out.

3) Answers to email and web site contact form inquiries may just take a little longer than usual, but we will be on email while in Japan.

4) No new products will be received or posted to our web site during this time period.

We'll be posting this info to our shopping cart and homepage soon, so there's no way to miss it.

We are sorry for the inconvenience, but we'll hopefully have a few new goodies for you to look at when we come back!

It never fails - we try to space out our shipments so we have new stuff all the time, but we end up receiving a big bunch of stuff all at once. Good news for you when we do finally get everything, though! Now you've got a bunch of stuff to look forward to over the next few days, with new items from Atelier-Pierrot, Baby, the Stars Shine Bright/Alice and the Pirates, and Victorian maiden!

In fact, there's so much new stuff that we literally don't have room for it.

(That's a small part of our stock space, but it all looks like that right now - totally full.) Gee, we should open a physical store or something. You're gonna need to help us clear some stuff out!

Just a bit of good news for your Valentine's Day - you can look forward to AATP/BTSSB lucky packs on our site! We expect to post what we have TOMORROW, 2/15, so watch for that at around 6PM! We only have two styles and a limited number of each - these are big packs and are expensive to ship from Japan, so it's tough for us to get as many as we'd want. They'll probably go quick, so don't wait if you want one!
