Boost your USB modem's signal reception mcGyver's way

If your a USB modem user like me I'm pretty sure you experienced poor reception. And I know you've done everything to improve reception some ways you'll be laughing at yourself looking back. There some ways to do it right like switching to a lined internet provider, switching to a carrier that broadcast better signal at your area, or buy an antenna. But there is a more quick and easy, ghetto solution to it without spending anything.
If you have some old battery operated toys lying around then you're in luck.

We're going to need a dc motor from the old toy, A scissor and your USB modem of course.
Unwound the copper wire from the dc motor, then wound about 15 to 20 loops around your USB modem preferably near the tip or where the internal antenna might be. Then secure the copper wire, you can knot the ends or tape it in place. Then plug it to your computer see the improvement on the reception.

Create a Mobile Version of Your Blog (Now supports auto-redirect for Blogspot blogs)

A while ago I blogged about 2 other mobile blog platforms http://myplaylist4today.blogspot.com/2010/01/setup-mobile-version-of-your-blog.html that has quite some impressive features but both don't support automatic redirection of visits from mobile phones. Instead they provide a link or thumbnail that you have to click to visit the mobile version of the blog. So basically if your browsing using your mobile phones, if your using your phones native browsers chances are it will return an error or an unable to load message. If your using mobile browsers like Opera Mini or Bolt whose among the most popular ones, your going to have to let the site finish loading then click on the link to the mobile version specially in Opera Mini.

But now automatic redirection will be possible using a new and free to use mobile blog platform called Flurp.

Setup is really easy. First Visit this FlurpSiruna

Then on the url box enter your blog blog feed url e.g. http://YourBlog.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default where YourBlog will be your blog name, so it will look something like this:

then click on preview your blog.

a phone simulator will show your mobile blog.. you can choose from various phone models to preview it with.

Then click Sign up Now.

Fill up the form on the next page.

*You might want to put your blog name as your username cause it will be included in your mobile blog url

Accept terms and conditions.

Click create new account that's it you now have a mobile version of your blog.

On the next page you'll have your mobile blog's url and other options..

Now, how to automatically redirect mobile visitors to your mobile blog.

On the Actions, click "Redirect mobile visitors to your mobile version of your blog"

on the next page will be the code/script that your going to add to your template to detect mobile browsers.

Login to your blogger account.

On your dashboard, go to Design>Edit HTML

Before you change anything download your template first in case something went wrong or if you want to revert back to your old template.

Now look for the <head> tag. then copy the code from flurp and paste it below the <head> tag then save.

Now your mobile visitors will be automatically redirected to the mobile version of your blog.

Try visiting it on your mobile phone to check..

There are numerous products out there that offers anonymous surfing but most of them aren't free. Well I found one you can use free and you don't need to install anything.. Most of you may even know about this already..

Google Chrome Extensions Up At Last

At last, the long awaited extensions for Chrome is available. Although this has already been available for developers for quite some time now. Regular Chrome users, me included, have been wanting to add more plugins and functionality with our Chrome for a long time.

I personally like Chrome cause it's minimalistic and web pages loads really fast. But the lack of extensions
limits it's usability. Specially in blogging. To make up for that, I have to use Firefox side by side. For example if I wanted to make some screenshots, I have to copy the link from Chrome and open it in Firefox. Pretty strenuous process. Now it's just a click or two away.

Most of the popular and most used extensions from Firefox Chrome has it or something similar in function to it. From Facebook clients, Twitter, Email clients, bookmarks, favicons, SEO applications and more.

Setup A Mobile Version of Your Blog

These days, not all of the visitors on your blog use desktop or laptop to browse the contents. The number of people browsing the internet using their mobile phones is increasing. This maybe due to the new technologies added to the newer mobile phones of today. Also the increasing availability of "hot spots" or wi fi provided in public places like cafe's, bars, restaurant, malls, schools.

This availability is very convenient for internet users as they can surf the internet anywhere wi fi is available with no costs. If unavailable, network providers always offers mobile internet connections at a price.

In time, there will be more people surfing the internet using mobile phones.

Considering this. It might be time for you to set up a mobile version of your blog/site.

Why should I make one?

Simply to make it convenient and easier to navigate for your readers of your blog using mobile phones cause it will load faster.

-Mobile internet browsers, as advance as they are, don't render or display your blog/site as a regular desktop browser would. Sometimes the images won't show up the arrangement of your site's contents are different, disorganized.

The reason for this is that mobile browsers are designed to use very little memory which is your phones memory, often very low. Also mobile browsers are not as equipped in terms of plugins and enhancements as desktop internet browsers are. There are 2 ways to make it and both are really easy to do and free. The first one offers more costumization
and also revenue sharing through ads displayed on your mobile sites. the second just modifying your RSS feed url.

Browse to the bottom of the site. Look for MoFuse for blogs and click Mobilize Your Blog to sign up.

NOTE: they only offer free accounts for blogs. you have to sign up for a premium account if you own a website.

Fill up the necessary informations asked. You'll also need to provide your RSS feed eg. http://yourblog.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default , In my case I used http://myplaylist4today.blogspot.com/atom.xml because it's easier to remember.

MoFuse offers more customization of your mobile sites and also revenue sharing with your Adsense or AdMob a mobile advertising platform. So if you already have an account to either on of these integrate it to earn a little extra.

For WordPress blog owners it will be easier to integrate MoFuse with the WordPress Plugin The plugin also detects the browser of your visitors and automatically redirect it to your mobile blog if they are using mobile internet browsers. No modification or template hacking necessary.

For those who own their domain theres an automatic redirect script/code.

Unfortunately, other free blogging platforms don't support redirects such as blogspot.com. The best you can do is either put up a link to your mobile blog or add a small button which you can get from MoFuse.
The best positions would be somewhere at the top. Right below your header, the topmost part of your side bar cause these are the probable positions of the initial screen in mobile browsers.

How to Add "Static" Pages In Blogger the Easier Way

Pages in blogs are basically created if the blogger/webmaster wants to display contents that will be "static". It won't have any permalinks or any other informations like the date of posting, author, labels, and it even won't have it's own url. It is standard on websites and other blogging platforms but in Blogger you'll have to modify the template to achieve this.

Bloggers usually add this so their readers can navigate with ease to important pages like Contacts, Links, About, etc. But one needs a bit of HTML knowledge to do this.

Fortunately, there's a easier way to do this. But you have to make Blogger in Draft your default dashboard. To do that. Just visit Blogger in Draft and sign in with your account.

Then your dashboard should look like this.

Tick on the small box to make Blogger in Draft your default dashboard.

Now to make the static pages.

On your Dashboard click Layout ---> Posting ---> Edit Pages then Click the New Page button.

Put in the name ex. About, Contacts. Publish it and your done.

You can add up to 10 pages on your blog. You can also choose where you want it to appear and easy to do. On your Layout, just drag the page element of your Pages to where you prefer. If you want it on top,
put it at the bottom of the header or just above your posts. Or you can also put it on your side bar.

Relief Efforts in Haiti Facing Logistical Difficulties

After waiting for a couple of days, relief goods and aid started pouring Thursday. But it seems the Haiti people still have to wait a little longer for the supplies because relief and humanitarian teams are having difficulties reaching places. Most of the roads are still impassable and available ones are narrow, sea port was closed because it was severely damaged from the quake, The only available airport was also damaged so it can't handle the volume of incoming aid flights. All the incoming aid can only be delivered by sea or air.

As one of the poorest western countries, almost everything has to be brought in because they have nothing or very little in terms of equipment and infrastructure. Heavy equipments usually for construction purposes have to be brought in to help in the rescue and retrieval operations. Vehicles for the deliveries of the relief supplies and aid. Lots of water, for a couple of days, survivors and emergency teams have scarcity of water. Even the construction materials for the temporary shelters like wood have to be brought in because most of the local sources are heavily exhausted.

Treating the thousands of injured survivors is also becoming a challenge because most of the hospitals in Port-au-Prince where severely damaged. WHO (World Health Organization) also fears outbreak of diseases due to the difficult situation.

At the mean time desperate Haitians resort to salvaging any food, materials for temporary shelter, clothings, anything they can find amongst the rubbles, until the relief and aid reaches them.

Devastation in Haiti: Help Starting to Pickup

It's a bit of a relief to know that the badly needed aid, and relief goods started arriving this Thursday on Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. Even then we still have to continue sending in anything that we could to help.

There is still no certain estimates on the casualties yet. But officials predict there could be thousands. Rescue
operations are still on going. Global aid is starting to pick up.

Hide LinkWithin On Your Homepage In Blogger

Link Within is a free and very useful widget bloggers can have on their blogs to display related posts with a thumb-shot of an image if any, just below every posts. This simply means more page views for you and a little convenience for your readers simply because they won't have to search for the related topics on your site. It will be displayed right at the end of the post. Blogger Blogspot does not offer a feature like this unlike WordPress. So Blogspot bloggers usually use this plugin to display related post on their blogs.

However, users of this widget don't really have much control on where to position it within their posts. It will
always position itself at the bottom of every post. And show up on your home page even if you have
summarized a post. It will show up even before the "read more" link and may sometimes result to your readers thinking your posts are too short cause they missed your "read more" link. So sometimes bloggers think it would be better to show Link Within only on post pages and not on homepage, or it's just me.

If you you want to show Link Within only on your posts here's how I did it. by using the <b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == "item"'> CODE </b:if> which I learned in some blogger tuts on how to hide adsense ads on homepage showing it only when you are within a post.

So here's what you have to do:

Note: If you currently have LinkWithin Installed you have to remove it first.

First, login on your blogger account

If you currently have Link Within Installed, on your dashboard go to Layout ---> Page Elements look for the page element of your LinkWithin. Usually labeled LinkWithin. Click Edit then Remove.

Then go to Edit HTML and download your template for backup.

Then find this code </body> it is usually located at the very bottom of your template.

Right before it, paste this code

REPLACE THIS WITH CODE
</b:if>

Then we have to create a new LinkWithin widget. Go to the site or here LinkWithin open it in a new window or tab.

Then fill out the form. This is Important: on the Platform select Other. Then Submit.

Copy the script/code. To make sure you selected all of it before copying, click inside the box and hit Ctrl+A.

Now go back to your template and paste the code replacing the REPLACE THIS WITH CODE. Save your template and your done. Go check your home page.

Surf the Internet Safe and Anonymously with a free VPN

Most internet users performs searches mainly for help, answers and infos about whatever it is that they wanted to know or learn more about. But majority of them or us including me, wanted their personal data to themselves. Most people don't want to leave their i.p. adresses or mac addresses on websites they visit. We sometimes want to surf anonymously.

One way to do this is to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network). A VPN is mainly a computer network on top

of a computer network. The VPN simply fronts your existing network therefore hiding behind your real i.p. address or mac address or at least that's my understanding of it. For more info about visit Wikipedia page for VPN http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network.

But the thing is, most VPN services are often not free. So for most people who don't have spare money to spend have no choice but to search regularly which is unsecured.

By scouring the internet I manage to find one provider that offers free and paid VPN's called It's Hidden. Of course the paid one offers more and support. The free account doesn't have support but the setup instructions.

To setup. Just go to the web site http://itshidden.com/ and click the Free Signup/Upgrade bar on the navigation or here http://itshidden.com/index.php?option=com_acctexp&task=subscribe&Itemid=54 and on the next page you will be offered some subscription (paid) options. Navigate to the bottom and you'll find the free option. Just click the Free tab and fill up the form, accept terms and conditions and click register. Then you will be asked to choose your operating system eg. Windows XP, WIndows Vista, Linux, etc., just choose your operating system to start setup (If you don't know your what your operating system is refer to the stickers on your computers or find it in your system) After choosing you will be taken to a step-by-step setup guide on creating the VPN connection. Just follow the steps and your done.

Now go to your Network connections and you'll find the Virtual Private Network you created there.

Just double click it to connect or right click then choose connect, a pop-up window will open. See image below. Just enter the username and password you entered on the registration and you will be connected to your free VPN.

Blogger Post Summaries the easy way

Post summary is very useful if you write very long posts and you wanted to display just short teaser sentences on your homepage and it also brings a bit of ease to your visitors cause they won't have to scroll so far down just to scan your home page.

Unfortunately Blogger don't have this feature built in previously, so blogspot bloggers resort to one solution, modifying their template or "hack" as more commonly known in blogosphere. To do this you have to at least know a little about coding html/css, or at can really follow the instruction on the tuts. You have to add some
codes in your template save it then again you have to put something on your post format which will you will use to indicate where to start summary on your post and and also shows the "read more.." link on the pages on your homepage..

The problem is for some people this is just too much trouble. And you have to make your post on HTML editor. In the Compose mode In my case the code keeps on disappearing. So weren't able to specify where to summarize my post. The result was the read more link appears at the very end of my posts but did not summarize it at all. Then on the home page all of your post will have the read more link even if a post only have a word in it. You don't really have a choice it will show up on all your posts on your homepage.

Here's how:

First you have to use the updated editor.

Go to your dashboard ---> Settings ---> Basic then choose updated editor

Then save settings.

If you go to your post editor you will notice some additions to your tool bar..

How to use it:

On Compose mode write your whole article.

Now we choose where to start summary or insert jump break..

position the cursor to wherever you want to start summary..

Now click the "insert jump break" button

Then a bar will appear like this where you positioned your cursor.

Then publish your post and view your homepage.

If you want to change the text link "read more" to anything you want.

On your Dashboard, Go to:

Layout ---> Page Elements ---> then click Edit on the Blog post widget ---> then change the Post page link text to whatever you like

Save ten view the changes.

NOTE:

If you are using customized third party Templates/ Layouts you will have to add a code to your template for it to work properly.

First go to Layout ---> Edit HTML ---> then click Download Full Template to back up your template in case something goes wrong.

Then tick on the Expand Widget Templates checkbox.

Then press Ctrl+F and search for this line

After locating it paste these code right below or after it

Easily replace the boring old Blogger Comment form with a feature rich plugin

The default Blogger comment form is a feature poor platform often with so many restrictions that visitors are discouraged to leave any comment. Unlike other blog platforms like Wordpress and others whom already have nice comment forms with some cool features and plugins so easy to use some don't even require a knowledge in HTML coding to implement.

For Blogger Blogspot users there are some ways to improve the looks and functionality of their comment forms. However, doing it's frustrating and requires a bit of HTML coding experience or you really have to
strictly follow instructions from some so called "Blogger hacks". Tutorials provided by programmers and Blogger support sites. One really nice "hack" is provided at BloggerPlugin.org which will display avatars on the comments made. Formerly a profile picture will only be displayed if you own a blog and sign in with it to comment..

However if you're not that knowledgeable in HTML coding and you're not very good in following step by step procedures or just don't have the time to do so, then you might wanna move to another blogging platform or just leave it be..

Intense Debate is a free commenting plugin that has a lot of features, plugins. Their comment forms are also easily customizable. You can change how it appears, show/hide borders, change text colors with some short snippets or codes, and the comment forms just looks so much better than the default Blogger comment form.

You can implement it directly to your template by following just a few steps, 3 steps actually. Or you can add it as a widget and avoid the procedure (if 3 steps is still to long for you), with just a few mouse clicks..

How to add it to your Blogger blog:

- First you have to make sure your not using Classic Template. If you do, this won't work cause the plugin don't support the classic template yet..

- Then you go visit the site http://www.intensedebate.com/ and sign up for an account of course.

IMPORTANT: on the sign up page.. choose the "I want to install Intense Debate to my blog or website" option.

- After clicking save you will be taken to the first step. Specify URL. Add the blog url where you wnat to install Intense Debate to.then proceed to the next step..

- On the next page.. Follow the instruction on the left side..

Choose whether you want to install as Widget which is easier but takes longer to load on your pages.
Or Template option which is faster to load but is a bit harder to install..

- Then choose whether to enable it on new posts only which is recommended, but posts on your blog which already have comments will use the old comment form. Or on all blog posts which will replace the comment form on all your posts but your existing comments will not be displayed.

- Then click the open blogger.com link. This will open you blogger dashboard if your already logged in on your blogger or it will prompt you to log in..

If you choose to install as widget:

- First you have to disable comments in Blogger. On your Dashboard click Layout then Choose Settings and choose Comments in the sub-menu
- Then set the Comments Default for Posts to "New Posts Do Not Have Comments" then save settings

- Then click add widget to my blog. Follow instructions.
- After it is added to your blog save changes. And your done.. View your blog.

If you chose Template install:

- Then you will be prompted to download your template. To download template: On your Dashboard click Layout then choose Edit HTML.

Then click Download Full Template

Save it to somewhere it will be easier for you to find or access like your desktop.

- Then you will be prompted to choose the file and upload it.
- After the upload is completed click once on the text box to select the copy.

- Then make sure all the text is selected in your Edit template then paste.
- Save your template. Then you have a really cool comment form.

Traffic Python is a new site that says it guarantees more CONVERTING web visitors and online advertising with very little effort or cost. So I decided to put it to the test...
My first impression was the site looks professional and clean, with an attractive look and feel. It is easy to read and understand. Joining the site was easy and painless--they do offer 2 upgrade options but they are not required to gain the benefits.

The Members Area is very well laid out and intuitive--I could figure out what to do after only a few minutes and was able to get up and running in less than 5 minutes. Inside the site, you create links and ads--the links you simply enter any URL links you use into the generator and it transforms them into "Traffic Python" links. You create ads for anything you want to promote using the Traffic Python Ad Generator, which is very easy to use. You can create as many links and as many ads as you like. And they are organized in a logical way--links are displayed in the order you create them but also your 5 most recent links appear on the main page for quick reference. Also, since the link generator is the tool you'll use most, it is also right at the top of the main page when you login. Very smart!

After you've created at least 1 link and 1 ad you can start to generate traffic. Just use and promote the new Traffic Python link instead of the original source link you had. Every time the Traffic Python link is clicked, the page loads followed by a cool slide-up ad window at the bottom. It displays an ad PLUS an image with your affiliate link that goes back to Traffic Python. So if anyone clicks the Traffic Python image they see the site, and if they signup they become your referral.

It's a great viral feature because you can build referrals without even trying to just by using the site. Now every time the ad window displays (your Traffic Python links get clicked) you earn credits that get YOUR ad displayed in the ad windows when other members' links get clicked. So the more clicks, the more times your ads get displayed. And this works virally--meaning as you make referrals into Traffic Python (either by promoting it or just using it and visitors click the Traffic Python image on the ad window to join) you also earn ad credits on THEIR link clicks. And this works up to 5 levels deep. So you can create a massive amount of free ad views and web traffic by referring others to Traffic Python also.

I didn't get to test the full effect of a big downline yet (I just got the tool) but I can tell you the rest of the site works exactly as stated--my links got clicked, I earned credits, and my ads got displayed. Traffic Python even tracked my results so I know how many clicks and how many ad displays. That was an impressive unadvertised extra feature.

There is one more benefit and feature which might be the best of them all--downline emailing. You can email your downline with offers, promotions, or whatever you like, and here is where Traffic Python really shines. They took time to make the emailing often enough that it's valuable as a user, but no so often that it's a burden to your downline. But the best part about this feature (and actually the credit earning too) is that it tells you exactly how long until you can mail again. Now THAT's cool.
