SEO is not an enigma. Anyone can do Search Engine Optimization. The key is understanding what google wants.

I am going to cut straight through the crap. You don’t need some SEO expert at least initially to get ranked for long tail terms.

SEO is not some mysterious science that only a select few know and understand. Sure. When you get into advanced SEO techniques it can get kind of hairy, but for the most part it isn’t something anyone should be scared of.

There are only 2 types of SEO techniques that you need to be worried about.

Onpage Optimization

Offpage Optimization

The onpage stuff is primarily the things that YOU can have complete control over.

The offpage optimization is really, for the most part, out of your hands (that said, the pro marketers know how to manipulate these rankings. I will go more into this later).

Onpage Optimization Tips….

Onpage optimization is simply all the things that you can do directly to your site. There are factors that will affect your onpage optimization. These include:

The title tag of your site
The meta tags of your site
The title tag of the actual page
The actual content of your site
H1, H2, H3 tags (content headers)
enboldened, underlined, and italicized text within your content.
You link structure with the appropriate anchor text.

This is for all sites: free or paid hosting, blog or static website platforms….it does not matter. All things considered equal, your static website could outrank my blog or visa-versa depending on how well you can optimize your site.

To understand onpage optimization, we need to look to see what a google bot will see.

When a bot (or spider) enters your website, they will start at the top left hand side of your site and start to move down, from left to right.

Your job, as a webmaster is to give google as many clues as you can as to what your site is about.

My friend, Grizzly, said it best when he said that a google bot should know exactly what your site is about before it even reaches the content.

Of course there are variables to this. Let look at this closer……

Let’s pretend that you have a hunting site. Let’s say that you have managed to grab a link from a hunting site that links to you. A web bot will travel to this hunting site, and move from the hunting site through a link to your site with the anchor text “hunting bows”. This would be the bots first clue.

The bot would be coming from another site with the anchor text telling the bot that the sitemay be about “hunting bows”.
Now, that it arrives at your site, it will start at the top left and start searching trying to piece together exactly how to categorize your site.
It’s second clue could be the actual URL itself. That’s right. Forget what they tell you. If your primary keyword is in in the URL or better yet, is the URL, then your chances of ranking for that keyword is much better than say someone like me trying to rank high for the keyword internet marketing with leodimilo.com.

I know I am making this ultra simple but am doing this for simplicity’s sake. Onpage Optimization is really as simple as that. And really, when you think about it, it makes sense.

You see, Google is just trying to categorize your site. In order to do this, it needs to know what your site is about and how relevant your site is according to your keywords and LSI keywords that surround it.

In other words, using “hunting bows”, as an example, google has come from a site that is relevant within the niche (which passes some authority that says hey google…this site is about this….).

It reaches your domain (which says hey google…this site is about this….)

It goes through your title tag (which says hey google…this site is about this…)

It reaches your meta tag description (which says hey google…ect.ect.)

It hits your content header (the title tag of the post)….

At this point, it is likely that google has all the clues it needs to know what your site is about….

The icing on the cake is the content itself….

So google of course, complies and says…well, they say that your site must be about your keyword and therefore they categorize you.

You get placed in the proverbial ranking line for whatever keyword it has you categorized under.

If you were to just optimize this way and this way only, you would be far ahead of most of the websites out there. Why? because most websites don’t bother with onpage optimization.

Of course, getting ranked high is another story altogether…..more on that later….

Today there is a lot of competition around in Google. Everyone is using Adwords to climb the rankings and get quality traffic and sales through to their site. All those methods are good but they are not great. As you know it costs to use Google Adwords, submitting articles and thinking of articles can take ages and for blogs to be ranked high you need to update it regularly.

Here are a few tips that I have learnt over the past few months that I been blogging. I think these steps are important for maintaining and keeping the momentum going new blogs.

1. Drafts.

Make drafts of your future posts, collect data and information related to the post and keep working on them. One of the reasons most blogs fail or lose an audience is that they fail to to post consistently. Having a bunch drafts helps you when you run out of ideas and keeps you organized.

2. Become A Feed Ninja.

Read more post less. While you might not be Scoble and have the ability to read 600+ RSS feeds in a few hours, try to keep track of news around your niche and interests, blogs catch up on news faster than news sites. Reading will also help to give you more ideas for your next post. Practice makes you perfect.

3. Engage Users And Build Relationships

I have subscribed to every reader who has left a meaningful comment on my blog this helps me get to know my readers better and what they expect from my blog. Use Services like coccoments etc to keep track of comments.

4. Be Available And Accessible.

One of the key things of building relationships is to be easily accessible. I have added most of my regular reader on Gtalk and chat with some of the frequently (you can add me ajacob[at]clazh.com). I’ve helped some of them out when they ask me for help or advice.

5. Break News, Write Pillar Posts.

If you follow point 1 and 2 you’ll realize there are two types of post you can do. Break news or write Pillar post. Breaking news is hard you’ll need to watch your Rss feeds like a hawk, it has a few advantages, if its important news it will get picked up easily by other blogger. Writing Pillar post will make your article sticky, most of the traffic that I get are from my pillar posts.

Blogging is all the rage right now. There can be any number of reasons to have a blog. Some truly enjoy writing, and a blog is the perfect creative outlet, since no one but you has a say in what gets posted or what gets scrapped. Others prefer to hire ghost bloggers simply because they want to have a blog but lack the writing skills or inspiration. Whether you have a personal blog or a business blog where your goal is to let others know about what you’re doing in your field, surely you want your blog to be read; if not, what’s the point? Having a successful blog takes time and effort. It takes, most of all, commitment. You must be committed to it and stick to it. Here are some of the things the most successful bloggers would recommend.

1. Make a Contribution
Consider any successful, popular blog, and you’ll see it contributes valuable knowledge to the community. Consider your niche or area of expertise, and think about which questions people would like answered. Are there any topics that haven’t been covered by other bloggers or experts? Take advantage of the questions readers ask in their comments or feedback and address these issues. Find out what others are saying about something. Maybe you have a different point of view or insightful ideas to add. If you really want to have a successful blog with, say, hundreds of subscribers, you have to give them something they can apply or something they can learn.

2. Stand Out

Make your headline and opening paragraph very compelling. It’s what will make the reader go on reading. The success of your blog depends not only on the quality of your content, but also how often you post new content. It is essential that you have a schedule or some kind of weekly/monthly plan. 7. Create a Design that Works
If your blog is cluttered with either ads, lists of irrelevant links, or graphics, it won’t be taken seriously. Make sure it’s easy to read, easy to navigate. Make sure everything is in the right place, from the site map to the related posts. Your goal should be to make people want to stay, not run away! Display your best work where it is easy to find.

When all is said and done, if you want your blog to be read by thousands of people, there are no set rules. Mistake 1: Keyword Stuffing

Before explaining why it's a bad idea, let's first define keyword stuffing as overfilling your content with your targeted keywords/keyphrases. By way of example, if you're targeting the phrase "navigation system," then keyword stuffing your content might read something like "Buying a new navigation system is something most customers do regularly as their old navigation system often fails to function in the proper way that a navigation system should..." and so on. It reads like a fourth grader's essay, and the search engine spiders pick up on the unnaturally high incidence of the same phrase repeated over and over.

While every SEO expert has a different opinion about keyword density, a safe but effective range might be considered 4-9% density. This makes sure the search engines correctly categorize your site for the services you offer, without them penalizing you for blatantly stuffing it with keywords.

Mistake 2: Link Farms vs. Directories

What is the difference between a link farm and a directory? It sounds like an easy question, but it's deceptively difficult. 1: Don’t use blogrolling: it may be easier to use but the javascript stuffs up search engines when they are looking for links and makes the links useless, use WordPress’s managed links feature or similar product, or even hard code it, I did for the 18 months I used MT before changing to WordPress

2. Pinging to weblogs et al is good but trackbacking to sites is better, when of course your post is in relation to that sites topic. Also legitimate commenting directly on other sites helps expose your site to others. But remember, it must be legitimate comment and not spam!

3. Offer to exchange links on your site under your links section, it lets people know that your interested in linking and will build up your site quickly in Technorati and Google.

4. Link to other small sites without exchange, either through side bar or post: linking to big sites is great in showing what your reading but does nothing to build up your readership because they nearly always never return the favour, indeed a number of them will steal your stories or ideas without any attribution at all. Smaller sites on the other hand are often stoked that you’ve linked to them and will return the favour without asking, even if they don’t, you’ve still done a good deed.

5 submit your blog to ALL the search engines, it might take some time but the spiders will start coming if….

6. The most important feature of all: post regularly and post often. It not only brings readers back regularly but it means the spiders from the search engines will return more frequently indexing your entire site, and you’ll start getting hits from the search engines. Some may argue that these aren’t that valuable but I would argue that’s rubbish. It exposes your site to a new audience for free, and even if only a few return you’ve still built up your readership for free. Take the Blog Herald for example, we get 5,000 views per month just from clickthrus in from Google and another 2,500 from other search engines (Google is the only real game in town though). Even if only 1% return to the site later, that’s 75 new regular readers per month or nearly 1000 per year, and what I also find is that this traffic also responds well to advertising on the site if they’ve stumbled in for the wrong reason.
