I was working in a kitchen that had an island, and it was where the kids would have their breakfast and do their homework. As in a lot of cases, this was the family gathering point. Because most kids have a bit of nervous energy, they would tend to kick the island below the counter top. In this case, it wasn’t too bad, but it was pretty scuffed and the previous paint finish wasn’t able to be cleaned.

My friends at Sherwin Williams suggested that I try (PCWE). My first thought was, that with most epoxy’s, it will be a 2 or 3 part process, take a lot of time, and probably have a very strong odor. They explained that this product can be applied as easy as any latex paint, and has minimal odor. This stuff was great. It also dried quickly so that I could re-coat it that day.

As for durability, (PCWE) dries very hard, like any epoxy, and can be cleaned easily. (PCWE) can be applied to most surfaces, but at this point, is only meant for interior use. It can be brushed, rolled, and sprayed. It also comes in different sheens.

The first phase was a couple of offices, a couple of bathrooms, and a break room. The most recent phase included, what they termed “operatories”, which we’re all familiar with. As for the painting, it’s pretty much like any other project, but the prep work was a bit more detailed. There was a lot of equipment to protect and cut around.

So far the job is going great, and with a couple of phases to go, we’ll have it done before Summer.

The sign was originally created in 1923 as a billboard for a local real estate company, and was only supposed to be there for 18 months. It quickly became the marquee for the city, and has been there ever since.

I was surprised to learn that rock star, Alice Cooper, started a campaign in 1978 to replace the deteriorating sign with the more permanent steel structure that stands today.

In 2005, the sign was painted with a coating not suited for the corrugated metal, causing it to bubble when it didn’t adhere to the old coating.

In this most recent makeover, the entire sign had to stripped of all the previous paint, before it could be re-coated. A 100 percent biodegradable Peel Away paint remover was used. Each letter was then pressure washed and primed with Pro Industrial Pro-Cryl Universal Acrylic Primer, and then top coated with Emerald Exterior Acrylic Latex Paint, both Sherwin Williams products.

The “Hollywood” sign of today is four stories high and 450 feet long. Each letter stands 45 feet high and between 31 and 39 feet wide. The job required 110 gallons of primer, and about 275 gallons of paint. The color was “High Reflective White” SW 7757.

There are articles out there talking about the colors for 2013. My feeling has always been that, if you are staying in your home for a while, choose what you like. You will be the one living with it. If you plan on selling your home next year, then neutral colors are the way to go.

As for what has been popular with painting, folks are still choosing mostly colors of gold, tan, cream, brown, beige, and off whites. Accent walls of red and dark brown are popular color choices. Painting woodwork, and kitchen cabinets are still popular as well. As for sheen, flat seems to be what people are turning to, with eggshell coming in a close second. Of course this is only based on what I’ve seen with my customers.

Every job that we do is different, and I enjoy them all. We all have different tastes and styles. It’s always fun for me to add color to someones home, and watch how they get excited about the changes. After all of these years, it still amazes me how a little bit of paint can change how we feel about a particular space.

The only draw back with “SuperPaint” is that it doesn’t come in an ultra-deep base, which is necessary for very dark colors, and most reds.

I was recently given the chance to try “Emerald”, because of the dark red color that was chosen by the homeowner. I was impressed. It was very easy to work with, and it covered beautifully. It was recommended that I use a polyester roller cover for the best coverage, as I did.

As with other brands of paint, it is usually recommended that a grey primer be used when working with dark red colors. In this case, the walls had a light beige color, and I opted to skip the primer step. It worked out great. Two coats of “Emerald”, and the walls looked great!

With “Emerald” being the top paint at Sherwin Williams, it carries a bigger price tag. That being said, if you find that you’re working with a special color that requires and ultra-deep base, “Emerald” is a great way to go.
