A man claiming to be guarding traditional lands in northern Saskatchewan is accused of firing a shotgun at a boatload of fishermen, court documents show.

Victor Nanatakapo is charged with careless use of a firearm.

Nanatakapo, who lived on government-owned land, said he was firing cautionary shots to warn off the fishermen from entering areas belonging to First Nations tribes, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Saturday.

The type of firearm is irrelevant, The Crown prosecutor, Jennifer Claxton-Viczko said. The fact that it was directed toward a group of people, and that was the reason for it being discharged, that's what makes it careless. That's not a proper use of it.

Claxton-Viczko was addressing speculation that Nanatakapo's use of a shotgun at far distance instead of a rifle showed he did not intend to hit anyone.

I didn't believe anyone was actually shooting at us, one of the fishermen, Chad Musich, told the CBC. Then he heard, Get the hell off my lake, documents show.

Gerald Morin, the judge on the case, will give his decision in January.

An Oregon man who listed a bag of pot among the items stolen from his truck wound up with a drunken-driving citation and, presumably, a hangover.

Calvin Hooper, 21, Salem, reportedly called 911 to say someone had broken into his vehicle in a tavern parking lot and stolen his jacket, $400 in cash and three-quarters of an ounce of marijuana.

A sheriff's spokeswoman told The (Salem) Statesman-Journal Hooper was having a rough night Tuesday after a stint at the Freeloader Tavern

Sheriff's Lt. Shelia Lorance said dispatchers sent Deputy Ryan Clark to the Freeloader to take a report, but Clark couldn't find the caller.

The caller dialed 911 again to ask where the deputy was, but the dispatcher had trouble understanding him because he repeatedly pulled over to vomit.

The deputy eventually located Hooper at an intersection standing about 100 feet from his parked truck. He allegedly told the deputy he was looking for the dirty dogs who swiped his weed. Clark decided that was the right time to put the cuffs on.

Almost a year after the body of 3 year old Caylee Anthony was discovered in a Florida wetland, an upcoming play that's based on the toddler's horrific death has enraged her mother and accused killer, Casey Anthony.

The play, titled Tot Mom was created by Steven Soderbergh and is scheduled to run from December 18 through January 31 at the Sydney Theater Company in Australia. Other projects that Soderbergh include directing the films Erin Brockovich and Ocean's Eleven.

The National Enquirer reports that news of the production infuriated 23 year old Casey Anthony. When Anthony was informed of the upcoming play, she responded, "Are you (expletive) kidding me? You get my (expletive) lawyer, now!"

Anthony stands to make no royalties from the play, as it's based on official documents and coverage of the case.

A fellow inmate dished to the tabloid, "Casey was completely out of control after hearing about the play. She was screaming so loud that a guard threatened to lock her in an isolation unit. She demanded that guards contact her attorney, Jose Baez."

Casey Anthony was indicted by a grand jury on charges of first degree murder in October 2008. She's currently being held at the Orange County jail awaiting a 2010 trial.

She faces the death penalty if she's convicted in connection with Caylee's death.

U.S. President Barack Obama Saturday called the massacre at Fort Hood, Texas, a crime against our nation and those who defend it.

It is a crime that would have horrified us had its victims been Americans of any background, Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address. But it's all the more heartbreaking and all the more despicable because of the place where it occurred and the patriots who were its victims.

The president praised heroics amid the chaos and terror.

Even as we saw the worst of human nature on full display, we also saw the best of America, he said. We saw soldiers and civilians alike rushing to aid fallen comrades, tearing off bullet-riddled clothes to treat the injured, using blouses as tourniquets, taking down the shooter even as they bore wounds themselves.

Obama said he had met Friday with FBI Director Robert Mueller, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and other federal officials about the attack and would continue to closely monitor the investigation.

Fort Hood officials said a U.S. Army psychiatrist, Maj. Nadil Malik Hasan, pulled out two handguns, one a semi-automatic, and fired more than 100 shots Thursday in a processing center where soldiers go to get physical and dental checkups and take care of paperwork before being deployed. The attack killed 13 people and wounded at least 30.

It was in this place, on a base where our soldiers ought to feel most safe, where those brave Americans who are preparing to risk their lives in defense of our nation lost their lives in a crime against our nation, Obama said.

Soldiers stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world called and e-mailed loved ones at Fort Hood, all expressing the same stunned reaction: 'I'm supposed to be the one in harm's way, not you.'

Two more suspects have been arrested in the death of a Muslim cleric and his wife killed by a fire that destroyed their home in northern England.

The men, who names had not been released Friday, were arrested Thursday in London, the Lancashire Telegraph reported. Police said one was 19 and the other 25.

Abdullah Mohammed, 41, was killed in the Oct. 21 fire. His wife Ayesha died of burns a week later.

A daughter, Siddiquah, 14, was still hospitalized, but her younger brother, Muhammad, 9, was out of the hospital and being cared for by relatives. An older son is a university student and was not at home.

Two men were arrested in late October. Peter Bowden, 39, of Lytham St. Annes on the Lancashire coast, and Imran Ali, 29, of Manchester were still in custody, charged with murder and arson, the BBC said.

Police have not suggested a motive for the crime. Blackburn, 21 miles north-northwest of Manchester and once famous for its textile production, has one of the largest Muslim communities in Britain.

A convicted British murderer out on parole after serving 16 years of a life sentence is on trial for allegedly raping a woman, authorities said.

Mark Shirley, 39, is accused of imprisoning a Bristol, England, woman in her home and sexually assaulting her for three hours, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

Shirley was 16 years old when convicted of the 1987 murder of 67-year-old Mary Wainwright. He was sentenced to life but paroled in 2003.

The alleged attempted rape appeared to be a re-enactment of the murder Shirley committed in 1987, the British newspaper said. The 40-year-old rape victim testified Shirley called her Mary and threatened to cut me and make me smell as sweet as Mary.

Shirley fled when the woman's son returned home, the court was told.

It is the Crown's case that what the defendant was referring to was his murder of Mary Wainwright, prosecutor Rosaleen Collins said. It is as if he was reliving or re-enacting that which had taken place 20 years before.

Shirley pleaded not guilty to false imprisonment, rape, and sexual assault.

A 31-year-old student from Denmark was arrested by Iranian police in Tehran for attending a recent protest, a Danish journalists group said Friday.

The Danish Union of Journalists said University of Southern Denmark student Niels Krogsgard, who disappeared Thursday, was arrested in the Iranian capital after police officers clashed with anti-government protesters, The Copenhagen (Denmark) Post reported.

The union said it obtained its information about Krogsgard from the International Federation of Journalists in Brussels.

Krogsgard, who was in Iran as part of a university project on Iranian politics, was with a fellow student at Thursday's protest when the pair became separated after police forces fired tear gas.

Charlotte Slente, spokeswoman for the Danish Foreign Ministry's citizens' service agency, told the Post the ministry could not confirm Krogsgard's arrest.

We're using all our efforts on localizing Niels Krogsgard, Slente said. The embassy is in contact with the Iranian authorities to help track him down.

A 15-year-old boy was in police custody after allegedly shooting a 17-year-old boy on a school bus Friday morning, police said.

Police told The Philadelphia Inquirer the unidentified suspect allegedly used a .25-caliber handgun to shoot a fellow student on the way to their West Philadelphia high school.

The unidentified victim, who suffered a bullet graze to his head, was expected to survive.

Police said it was unclear what prompted the shooting in the back of the bus, while Police Deputy Commissioner Kevin Bethel criticized how easy it is for teens to obtain firearms.

The ease of these kids to get guns is something that troubles us on a daily basis, Bethel said.

Police said following the shooting, the teen suspect allegedly used his weapon to threaten the bus driver and fled the vehicle once it was stopped.

The suspect was soon caught by police officers nine blocks away.

Nidal Malik Hasan was shot 4 times and is currently on a ventilator at a local hospital under heavy guard. Investigators haven't determined a motive for the attack, but it's believed that Hasan had received orders to deploy to either Afghanistan or Iraq later this month. Investigators are also looking for ties to radical groups that Hasan might have been tied to prior to the deadly attack.

21 year old Miss England Rachel Christie has announced she's giving up her crown in order to focus on clearing name after she was arrested for suspicion of commiting a nightclub assault.

"Due to the media attention following the allegations against her, Rachel Christie has now decided to withdraw from the Miss World competition and relinquish her Miss England crown," said contest organizers in a statement.

Christie is alleged to have punched Sara Beverley Jones, who holds the crown of Miss Manchester, in the face at a Manchester nightclub after the two were involved in an verbal disagreement.

"Rachel will concentrate on clearing her name and focus on training for the 2012 Olympics until this case is resolved," the statement continued.

Rachel Christie is also supposed to compete in the 2012 Olympics as a heptathlete.

Sacramento Kings forward Andres Nocioni was arrested Thursday on suspicion of drunken driving and later apologized for a lapse in judgment.

City police arrested the 29-year-old Nocioni and booked him into the county jail at 3:30 a.m., The Sacramento Bee reported. Nocioni posted bail of $1,482 and was released, the newspaper said.

I want to apologize to the Kings organization, my teammates, my coaches, the fans, the city of Sacramento and my family, Nocioni said in a statement released by the Kings. Drinking and driving is something that shouldn't be taken lightly. I made a mistake and I'm very sorry for my lapse in judgment.

Geoff Petrie, the team's president of basketball operations, said the Kings were extremely disappointed in the poor judgment shown by Nocioni.

He has apologized to the organization and his teammates. We will wait for the outcome of the judicial process and the NBA's decision on potential fines and/or suspension. This experience now becomes a life lesson learned the hard way.

A Georgia mother may face charges of falsely reporting a crime after telling police her daughter had been kidnapped by the child's father, police said.

Cara Williams of Jonesboro, Ga., called police to her home Thursday to say her 1-year-old daughter, Sencerity Williams, had been kidnapped by the child's father, Sentwali Cory, who then took off in Cara Williams' car, WSB Radio, Atlanta, reported.

An Amber Alert and a several-hour manhunt for the child followed, which was called off when family members said the child has been safe for months in Maryland with her father, the child's legal custodian, WSB Radio reported.

Right now we don't know why she did it, it's still being investigated, Kevin Hughes, a Clayton County Police Officer, said.

The mother is being held in the Clayton County Jail, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

War-crimes charges were dropped Thursday against a German World War II veteran after an Italian court learned he has died.

Ottmar Muhlhauser, who was an Army lieutenant in 1943, was the only known surviving officer from the German division that massacred Italian prisoners on the island of Kefalonia. The court said Muhlhauser died at his home in Munich at the age of 88, ANSA, the Italian news agency, reported.

Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian islands off the northwest coast of Greece, was occupied by Italian and German soldiers during the war. After Italy signed an armistice in 1943 and changed sides, the commander of the Italian Acqui Division decided to fight the Germans.

After the division surrendered to the Germans, thousands of Italians were shot trying to give themselves up or summarily executed. Gen. Hubert Lanz, the German commander, was convicted of war crimes at Nuremburg and sentenced to 12 years, serving three.

Muhlhauser continued to defend the massacre in interviews during a German investigation in 1967 and again in 2004.

''They were traitors and there is only one response to betrayal: execution,'' he said in 1967.

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia said Thursday it is imposing a lawyer on war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic.

CNN said the tribunal ruled Karadzic, who is facing allegations of orchestrating acts of genocide, will be represented by an attorney despite the Bosnian politician's insistence he would represent himself before the tribunal.

The International Criminal Tribunal said Karadzic substantially and persistently obstructed the proper and expeditious conduct of his trial by refusing to attend the proceedings until such time as he considers himself to be ready.

The tribunal did not name an attorney for Karadzic, 64, but gave additional preparation time by scheduling the war crimes trial to resume on March 1, 2010.

Karadzic is charged with 11 counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity for his alleged role in acts of genocide during the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s.

CNN said among the acts of genocide is the 1995 massacre of more than 7,000 Muslims in the town of Srebrenica. Srebrenica exists in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Authorities charged 14 investors and attorneys with insider trading Thursday, expanding the case involving New York hedge fund Galleon Group.

Billionaire founder of the fund Raj Rajaratnam was arrested last month. Thursday's arrests include attorney Arthur Cutillo of the prestigious law firm Ropes & Gray, The New York Times reported.

Cutillo and seven others are accused of offering confidential information to investors. The charges say the accused used a variety of techniques to avoid detection, including the use of prepaid cellphones and trading information in cars.

Although concerned about wiretaps, one defendant, Zvi Goffer, warned another, Jason Goldfarb, to be careful about the trades he made.

Goffer is quoted as telling Goldfarb, someone's going to jail, going directly to jail, so don't let it be you, OK?

A complaint reveals that the Federal Bureau of Investigation followed various defendants for more than two years, the Times said.

Former Galleon employees Zvi Goffer and Craig Drimal were cited as leaders of the conspiracy. Goffer is among several defendants who now works at Incremental Capital.

Ropes & Gray said in a statement, we are deeply disappointed to learn about this situation, which suggests an extreme breach of this person's duty of trust.

An arrest was made Thursday in the slaying of a 64-year-old Roman Catholic nun in Navajo, N.M., the FBI said.

The federal law enforcement agency did not reveal the identity or other details regarding the person taken into custody in the weekend death of Sister Marguerite Bartz, the Albuquerque Journal reported.

The newspaper said a preliminary medical examiner's report determined Bartz, whose body was found Sunday at her convent at St. Berard Mission Church in Navajo, was most likely killed by an attacker's blows. The FBI said she died between Saturday night and midday Sunday.

Sister Bartz did suffer substantial trauma, likely as a result of a violent confrontation with her assailant or attacker, the FBI had said Wednesday.

The nun's sport utility vehicle was found this week abandoned on a remote rural road near Cottonwood, Ariz., the Journal said.

Authorities in California said a bank robber called 911 to report a fake bank robbery in a nearby town before walking into his targeted establishment.

Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department, said the suspect, described as an African-American man in his 20s, was first spotted at a supermarket in Laguna Nigel at about 9:20 a.m., the Orange County Register reported Thursday.

Witnesses said the suspect spoke with someone at the store, which had a closed Bank of America branch inside, about finding an open branch and was told of an open location about 3 miles away in Dana Point.

Amormino said the suspect then went to an AT&T store near the open branch and used a display phone to call 911 and report a bank robbery in Laguna Nigel. He then walked into the Dana Point bank, told a teller he was carrying a gun and left with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police said they arrested a man and three teenagers for a Halloween attack on two boys in San Jose, Calif.

The SFGate.com said Thursday Eduardo Cristobal, 18, was arrested along with a 15-year-old boy and two 16-year-old boys for the holiday attack that left a 12-year-old boy in critical condition.

The identities of the teenage suspects were not reported.

Authorities suspect the attack on the 12-year-old boy and his 13-year-old friend was because the suspects mistakenly thought the trick-or-treaters were members of a rival gang.

Last Saturday's conflict resulted in the unidentified 12-year-old being shot and his friend stabbed.

The 13-year-old suffered unspecified injuries in the attack and has since been released from the hospital.

The Web site said Cristobal was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Charges against the teen suspects were pending.

A third person is facing charges after three toddlers fell from a moving car last weekend, Las Vegas police say.

Antonio Sanchez was arrested on seven counts of endangering a child, joining Vanessa Ramirez and Nancy Lopez in facing charges for Sunday's incident in northeast Las Vegas Valley, the Las Vegas Sun reported Tuesday.

Police allege Lopez was driving her Chrysler PT Cruiser Sunday night when her 3-year-old boy and Ramirez's 1-year-old twins fell out. Sanchez, who was in the vehicle's back seat, was allegedly seen retrieving one of the fallen children.

When I asked Nancy, 'What happened tonight with your kids?' She replied, 'I have no idea. We were driving around. The door opened up and they fell out. I am going to jail, aren't I?' an unidentified police officer alleges in a police report.

Lopez's son suffered minor injuries but Ramirez's children were in critical condition with unspecified injuries.

The Sun said Lopez is charged with seven counts of child endangerment, seven counts of having children unrestrained inside the car and driving under the influence of alcohol. Ramirez, who was not inside the vehicle during the incident, is facing seven counts of child endangerment.
