Here are 10 sought after job profiles for the job seekers looking out for a job in 2013.

Here are 10 sought after job profiles for the job seekers looking out for a job in 2013.

1) Analytics

Reason

Recent developments in hardware and networking technologies have made it cheap to not only gather large volumes of data, but also to store it and retrieve it with ease.

“The ability to analyse the data and make business sense out of it is a skill that is fast gaining prominence,” says Ajit Isaac, MD and CEO at Ikya Human Capital Solutions, who projects 12,000-15,000 openings next year.

Sectors

Banks, consumer goods, retail, IT & IT consulting, business consulting, & e-commerce/online.

Skills

Training/experience in statistics or financial analysis; familiarity with statistical techniques, and software such as SAS and SPSS.

Pay

Rs 4.5-8 lakh (p.a) Entry level (Graduate/PG)

Rs 8-12 lakh (Five years of experience)

Rs 15 lakh for IITs & Premier Schools

2) Sales

Reason

India is being seen as a large consumer market for various industries. And, many organizations, globally, are directing resources to grow it.

Muninder Anand, director, information solutions, Mercer, says there has been an increase in sales jobs at junior levels (sales executive, sales officer and area manager) and this, in turn, is creating opportunities at senior management levels (general manager sales and national sales manager) to manage the junior workforce.

Sectors

Consumer, pharmaceuticals, hi-tech, manufacturing & engineering, auto.

Skills

Communication & sales skills; exposure to industry.

Pay

Rs 4-10 lakh (p.a) Entry- to mid-level

Rs 24-50 lakh Senior management

3) Chief operating officers

Reason

2013 will be a year of greater competition, says E Balaji, MD & CEO, Randstad India. “So, as CEOs and business heads focus on increasing their market share, COOs would be focussing on cost control, cash flows and inventory management.” The demand for COOs is expected to grow 30% in the next few years.

Sectors

IT and IT-enabled services, engineering, procurement and construction.

Skills

Ability to multitask, make decisions under stress, motivate pros.

Pay

Rs 1-2crore (p.a) in large organisations

Rs 60-90 lakh SMEs and start-ups

4) IT & Mobile product development

Reason

With the Internet becoming an ubiquitous part of more and more lives, a lot of economic activity has moved online as well.

“A smooth, seamless user experience and a robust technical platform are key elements of a successful web presence,” says Ikya’s Isaac. “Firms recognise this, and, hence, people who can build such platforms are in great demand.”

Sectors

IT product, e-commerce, IT consulting and mobile application.

Skills

Knowledge of the latest tech and an eye for consumer insights.

Pay

Rs 12-18 lakh per annum (Entry level)

Rs 35-40 lakh (5 years of experience)

5) R&D professionals

Reason

According to Mercer, India is being seen as an R&D hub; several organisations are investing in R&D centres across industries. The current requirement is for niche skills at the junior management level.

Sectors

Auto, chemical, consumer, pharma, healthcare and IT.

Skills

Ability to conduct research to create new products.

Pay

Rs 5-6 lakh (p.a) Entry level

Rs 12-15 lakh Mid level

6) Supply chain, procurement & contract management executives

Reason

New projects are coming up in renewable energy segments. In engineering, there is demand for hardcore vendor development and people who know manufacturing/production processes enough to reduce cost.

Sectors

Oil & gas, power, petrochemicals, chemicals, auto, manufacturing and retail.

Skills

Experience in procuring capital equipment for petrochemical, oil & gas or power industries.

Pay

Rs 8-25 lakh (p.a) Mid level

Rs 35-70 lakh Senior level (GM and above)

7) Non-exec board members

Reason

India Inc is facing a paucity of independent directors. “Individuals with knowledge of corporate governance issues (among others) are in demand,” says Anindita Banerjee, client partner of Stanton Chase India.

Sectors

Mining, agrochemicals, healthcare and life sciences.

Skills

Leadership skills to drive better governance and increase efficiencies in areas of environment, health, safety & clean tech.

Pay

Rs 15-30 lakh per annum (Retainer, for meetings on a quarterly basis)

8) Social media buffs

Reason

Brands are going social, and customers and stakeholders are taking their conversations online. “Consumers are taking peer reviews seriously and basing their purchase decisions on them,” says Balaji of Randstad India.

Sectors

Technology, media, e-commerce, auto, FMCG and lifestyle product companies.

Skills

Tech-savvy; certifications from Google, Yahoo and MS ad platforms will help.

Pay

Rs 4-6 lakh per annum (Mid-level as it is still a nascent segment)

9) Junior engineers

Reason

Mercer’s Anand says most organisations that employ engineers are planning to expand. Maximum openings are at the junior level, including IT engineers & process engineers, product and design engineers.

Sectors

IT, telecom, auto, manufacturing, engineering & chemical.

Skills

Engineering and project management.

Pay

Rs 3.75-16 lakh per annum (Entry to mid-level)

10) Training staff

Reason

According to Amit Jain, business head, TimesJobs.com, as more educational institutes open up, more trainers would be hired.

Sectors

Education, training.

Skills

B.Ed, relevant bachelors /Masters degreel

Pay

Rs 4-5 lakh per annum Entry level

Rs 9-10 lakh Mid-level

Job seekers can look forward to a prosperous new year with more than 10 lakh new jobs expected across various sectors including FMCG and retail, says a survey.

Job seekers can look forward to a prosperous new year with more than 10 lakh new jobs expected across various sectors including FMCG and retail, says a survey.

Coming against the backdrop of uncertain economic conditions, the projected number of new jobs in 2013 is way higher than the estimated 7 lakh employment opportunities created this year, according to the MyHiringClub.com survey conducted on over 4,450 firms across 12 industry sectors.

All these employment opportunities have been projected only for the organised sector, it added.

Besides FMCG and retail, more job opportunities are expected in healthcare, IT and hospitality sectors.

“The new year would be good for job seekers with expected 1 million plus jobs in the country. 2012 was not good either for job seekers or for employers due to several issues, including economic conditions,” MyHiringClub.com CEO Rajesh Kumar said.

Additionally, banking space could also see a fair amount of recruitment activities, especially with the Parliament giving its go-ahead for a legislation that allows for opening of new banks by private players.

Riding on the back of FDI approval, retail sector is also expected to see large-scale hirings after the entry of more foreign players.

Psyche Panacea Management CEO Vikas Vats expects the hiring activities to increase by 15-20 per cent in 2013, from the levels seen in 2012.

“FMCG, retail and hospitality are going to be the biggest job creators in 2013. If all goes on expected tracks, then India is going to create a good number of new job across all sectors,” Vats said.

Echoing a similar view, Sat-n-Merc Manpower Consultant Director Prachi Kumari said, 2013 is expected to be healthy in terms of job creation and the pace of new employment would be better than 2012.

“In 2012, economic downturn and other global crises have badly affected the Indian job market. 2013 is coming with a lot of promise and we are expecting a sharp decline in unemployment ratio,” she added.

Recruitment tendering platform MyHiringClub.com survey showed that FMCG would lead the chart and is expected to generate 1.76 lakh new jobs, followed by healthcare (1.72 lakh), IT and ITeS (1.69 lakh), hospitality (1.06 lakh) and retail (1.02 lakh).

Education, training and consultancy (84,200), banking and financial services (72,900), media and entertainment (66,400) and real estate (51,400) are also expected to create job opportunities.

Besides, manufacturing and engineering would hire 63,200 new employees in 2013, pharma (43,300) and power and renewable energy (29,870), the survey added.

Engineering institutes across the spectrum are finding it difficult to place students with masters degrees with companies preferring 'less qualified' graduates who come cheaper and are "easier to mould."

Engineering institutes across the spectrum are finding it difficult to place students with masters degrees with companies preferring ‘less qualified’ graduates who come cheaper and are “easier to mould.”

The difficulty in placing senior students extends to tier-II institutions, and not just the premier Indian Institutes of Technology. “Companies wonder what additional value they bring to the table other than a little more maturity. It is unfortunate but today, those with more experience matter; not those with qualifications,” says P Thiruvengadam, senior director, Deloitte India.

The consulting firm has roped in a few hundred BTech engineers but none with a masters degree. “The problem to an extent lies with how Indian companies are structured. They simply don’t need too many people with masters degrees . That’s what is reflected during placements ,” says Amitabh Jhingan, partner, Transaction Advisory Services and National Sector Leader – Education, Ernst & Young India.

MTechs prefer roles in research, product development and the like, of which companies don’t have too many, he explains. “BTechs and BEs are preferred not just because they are engineers , but because they bring strong analytical skills to the table,” says Jhingan. Among the 300-odd engineers that KEC International, an RPG Group company, hires every year, there is one MTech/ME for every 10 BTechs.

“Our hiring is essentially needbased . So while we hire BTechs in various roles including project planning, coordination , supply chain and the like, we typically hire MTechs or MEs for specialised roles in design R&D,” says Yugesh Gautam, executive director – HR, KEC International.

Institutes, on their part, say companies prefer BTechs and dual-degree graduates (fiveyear graduate and post-graduate programme) for these reasons: Lower demand for research and development in core companies, perceived notions that Engineering graduates will be cheaper than their over-qualified counterparts, and the younger lot is easier to mould.

The placement team of Bangalore-based RV College of Engineering says like last year, this year too, nearly 40% of masters degree students will have to look for out-of-campus placements .

And while almost 80% of 720 BTech students of NIT Warangal have been placed, just 150 of the 500 from the masters programme have made it.

“It is more of a struggle to place students from streams such as space engineering and quality engineering and management ,” says Saitab Sinha, deputy training and placement officer, BIT Mesra. “With fewer students pursuing these programmes, many recruiters choose not to come to campus for the sake of 8-10 students,” he says.

Manipal Institute of Technology faces a similar problem. PG students of computer science or electronics get good opportunities but there is a dearth of demand for those in civil engineering, environmental engineering and the like. “In some branches, placements are as low as 40% while for others, it’s 90%-plus ,” says Kumara Shama, associate director – Industrial Liaison, Placement & Practice School, Manipal Institute of Technology.

The possibility of campus placements for dual-degree students is higher than those who have done a pure masters course, says S Sadagopan , director at International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bangalore. IIIT has started a dual-degree programme like the IITs where students earn graduate and post-graduate degrees after five years.

We all face interruptions at workplace. Which, most of the time, disturb our to-do-list and work schedule. Most of us are not very efficient in time management at work as by the end of the day; we realize that the time has sneaked away, leaving us with unmet deadlines. Some workplace interruptions may not be in our control and can disturb our schedule and productivity. Things like a colleague stopping by to have a chit chat or seeking help, unscheduled meeting with boss/colleague, phone calls, unsolicited enquiries /consultancy etc.

All these interruptions can disturb the focus or thought processes and ultimately the work schedules. Following are some tips which can be used to handle work interruptions.

•Prioritize – There may be 10 tasks to accomplish for the day. Divide them in the category of important and urgent and accordingly assign time. Try to finish the important tasks in the morning hours where the chances of interruptions are comparatively less.

•Create and Share your schedule- While creating timesheet for the day keep buffer time to accommodate unscheduled urgent business requirements such as unplanned meeting/work assigned by your boss. You can use google calendar or Microsoft outlook to share this schedule of yours so that your co-worker/boss knows when you are free.

•Learn to say NO – If you have to deliver a report in an hour’s time and someone walks to you for a casual chat or some favour and you know this may be something unimportant. Hence, to meet the deadlines and keep your schedule in line sometimes you have to say ‘No’ to people or postpone a little bit. However you can choose a delicate way to say that.

•Keep a check on Email and phone calls – Instead of keeping your outlook/personal mail open and responding to every email instantaneously, keep a fixed time to check and respond to emails like twice or thrice a day. Same goes with calls also. You can avoid unknown calls on mobile to keep the momentum of work going on and respond to them during lunch hour, coffee break etc.

•I am in the middle of something – Don’t hesitate to say this whenever you get any interruption and you are working on something important. There is no problem in doing that. You also can add that I shall get back to you after this work or time. This way they won’t come and disturb you instead you can go to them whenever you have free time.

•Rescheduling – However after managing the interruptions efficiently by above points, still your schedule may get affected little bit. So you can always reschedule your work a little.
