I had a crazy 24 hours in Edinburgh this weekend to check out some of the Festival which takes part throughout August. It was my first visit there and i was blown away by how cool the city is. The main reason for heading up there was to go and watch Kronos Quartet on the saturday night. More than likely you’re not too aware of the name but you definitely would recognise their music. If you’ve ever watched the amazing, but truly harrowing, Requiem for a dream then you’ll know the tune playing throughout the movie consisting of three violins and a cello. It’s the third time i’ve seen them now and every time they’ve been great.

The show was followed up by wandering around the fringe festival and heading into a midnight comedy act which could of gone either way, considering i was in attendance with my mother. Luckily jokes regarding oral sex were only briefly mentioned, saving any embarrassment as they led onto a more suitable topic – mainly Jew jokes.

Before jumping back on the train yesterday we headed to one more performance – a comedian called John Bishop. As expected, he was absolutely brilliant. Definitely worthy of the thousand seat theatre he’s sold out every day.

This was the second week that my old pentax lens has made the journey out and it gained quite a lot of attention from people as i wandered around. I’m going to try and fix it so that i can change the f2 that its currently stuck on to try and make it a little more user friendly but for a experimental, just for fun lens, i’m loving it.

I’m sure there’s some lovely shots of Edinburgh castle out there on the web but these are a few of the Edinburgh landscapes that caught my attention.

This post just got me thinking. Surely you need to watch the trailer for Requiem for a Dream one more time (if you then decide to watch the film, make sure you have someone close by to hug once its over)

And for something a little more lighthearted, John Bishop:

I’ve just returned from a camping trip down to Devon, a coastal resort in the south of England. Catching up for the weekend with friends i don’t see often enough was great fun even though there was zero waves, not that i can actually surf.

I decided to take down my camera with a 30 year old Pentax 50mm lens attached to see how it worked out with the 5D. I made some alterations to the lens (read; snapped bits off) to make it work and although it may be slightly quirky (aperture is now stuck on f2), i’m happy with the results.

A cheap ebay adaptor and my lens i’ve owned for 18 years becomes good as new

It feels like i’ve been away from my computer for an eternity as this summers path dragged me into a number of unprepared and unplanned directions. For the last two years i’ve made it down to the southern hemisphere at this time of year but due to costs involved, this year my feet have stayed on the ground in Europe. Its not to say it hasn’t been eventful…..

I’m just starting to sit down and get my head around a bike ride i’ve just been on. It started way down in Bilbao in Northern Spain and finished at my house in Chester, 1500 kms later. It was a great period of time away from everyday stresses with the sole intention being to get on my bike and ride it. Day after day after day after day we cycled watching as a whole country came and went beneath us.

I’m not going to humour you with shots of men in lycra, there’s plenty of them here. Instead here’s a couple of shots that for one reason or another i like from the trip.

A final point; i have been raising money for a charity that i feel very close to which supports children in Guatemala. Although my trip is now complete you still have the chance to donate and know that anything you give will go towards feeding, housing and educating children a lot worse off than us.

Back to the grindstone, so they say….

Getting an image that is unique enough and able to tick all the cover shot boxes is no easy feat and i’m so glad to have finally done it.

Of course there’s two sides to every shot and mad props have to go to the rider Dane Tiene. He not only had the idea behind this shot but also the balls to pull it off. One little mistake would have had major consequences to say the least.

The shot is featured on the cover of Australia & New Zealand Snowboarder and a behind the scenes take on the shoot can be seen here

2. You have to prepare your eyes for the greenery. Don’t like green? Won’t like it here.

3. When contemplating an afternoon beer you have to be aware that no one may be around to pour it for you.

4. When trying to mix with the locals you have to evaluate the look you have going at the time. I think she digs it…….

Talking about the weather has reached fever pitch in England over the weekend which can only mean the onslaught of two things; Wimbledon and Glastonbury. Now, strawberry’s and cream whilst watching a game of lawn tennis does sound inviting but its the latter one that grabs my attention. Glastonbury music festival is what British summers is all about. Its the one week of the year that we all look forward to and come rain or shine as 170,000 people descend to a field in Somerset looking forward to 5 days of music, and more often then not, lots of mud.

At present the weather forecast looks to be a scorcher but i’m sure this is due to change with wet Glastonburys being the topic of discussion.

I hear rumours that its going to be lovely until the weekend and i’m sure the rain will come at some stage. One things for sure, i’ll definitely be bringing my wellies.

Here’s a few shots i took in 2005. Surely one of the biggest storms i’ve ever experienced with fork lightning ripping a dance tent in half, a months worth of rain falling in two hours and people swimming in their tents. It may have been a messy one but still an absolutely brilliant weekend.

I’ve been thinking about a business card design for a while now but its only recently that i made a design i was happy with. I’ve gone for the ‘less is more’ approach leaving out any imagery and concentrating just on the text.

If you’re wondering where i got them from it was from the online shop Moo who specialise in making business cards with images on them. This was just a test run to see if the quality looked any good and i’m definitely pleased with the results.

And so the tournament we’ve all been waiting for begins….

I’m now watching my tenth game of football since friday which can only mean the world cup has kicked off down in South Africa. The pace of some of the teams has been slow off the start, including Englands lacklustre showing against America on Saturday. Germany seem to be the inform team going from the weekends games but there’s plenty more to come.

Here’s a shot of how we watch games in England. Look out for the beautiful looking girl in the front row acknowledging me. Bags of class right there. Altogether now; “In-Ger-Land, In-Ger-Land, In-Ger-Land, In-Ger-Land……………..”

England 1 – USA 1. “Shall we just get pissed?”

28 days after its release Apple announced that they had sold 1 million ipads in America alone. No doubt this figure will keep on multiplying over and over again as the units go on worldwide sale in the next few weeks. I had the chance to play with one a few weeks ago in the Santa Monica store and i can see just how much potential there is for magazines and books to make the transition into the electronic market instead of relying purely on the print industry.

If you’re starting to think about checking out online magazines a good place to start is New Zealand Snowboarder who have just put an issue online for the first time. Will online magazines be for everyone? Probably not, but there’s no denying we’ll be seeing more and more magazines follow suit and boost their internet presence.

So here it is below. Check it out, visit their site and see what New Zealand snowboarding is all about. Cast a glance to page 38 for one of my images shot with Stef Zeestraten over in Breckenridge a few months ago. Just what you need if you’re thinking about trying to learn a double backside rodeo……
